Q: How and Why my question is too broad?

Karan DesaiI asked this question yesterday which was marked as too broad. One of the comment from @JBH stated this reason: "How to build a world" questions are occasionally asked here. If the question is very specific they're left open. If the question is very broad they're closed. I'm afraid there are ...

@FoxElemental "I calculate that if I achieved a radius of approximately 4×10^8km then I would become a black hole" Now that's a life goal: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "Fat enough to be considered a black hole!"

7 hours later…
13:44
"Wow. Um, that's ambitious."
Oooh maybe I should . . .
hold on. Sandboxing Draft Right Now

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

FoxElementalWhat issues would arise from having eaten oneself into a black hole? Related to the Physics Stack Exchange question: Can I eat myself into a black hole? Info Look, I was hungry, okay? It started with a burger. And another one. And then another one. And before I knew it, I had eaten Earth. A...

Thank you.
> What ill effects would come of being that large, and of being a black hole?
Those are thoroughly answered by A) the original post, and B) the linked XKCD's on the original post.
@Hosch Yes, I just realized that. Give me a day to modify
14:34
Hold on. Changing it . . .
@FoxElemental One question about your elephant: are the eyes immune too? Because eyes are incredibly sensitive to poisons.
Other than that, I have an answer for it, kinda/sorta.
I (may) need to do a little more research on the glands running down into the end of the trunk, but pretty much any liquid forced at high pressure through a slit in a membrane will turn into a mist.
@Hosch250 The elephants? Yes . . . they are.
Also.
I just changed the black hole question.
@FoxElemental Well, that's good. Because the mist will almost certainly get in their eyes.
14:55
Yes. Lemme update that
Just updated
But do you think its ready for main? Doesn't matter whether it's answerable or not--I want it to be able to pass safely through the scorching fires of the netherland of Close Vote Review Queue.
I think it's good.
But, I've not participated on Main yet, so I'm not the best for that.
The second eyelid is a great idea, and they can keep it closed until the mist clears completely (probably a few minutes, depending on wind).
@Hosch250 I actually hadn't realized that

Q: Should we have a community-wiki list of graduated answers from the Answer Sandbox?

FoxElementalThe title says it all: For the Answer Sandbox, there's no list of graduated answers (linked directly to the answers, not the questions.) While the Question Sandbox has a list of graduated answers, the Answer Sandbox answers can only be seen by higher-rep users. So should we post a community wiki ...

GTG for a while
@Hosch250 I always thought it was weird that Hemdul was so willing to leave his sister for dead... Families are weird
@AndyD273 There are all kinds. Some are clannish and will stick together to the death for no reason.
Some are more than happy to throw others under the bus.
Maybe he's had a hard time with the step-parent? Maybe he's just a jerk. Maybe he feels threatened by her for some reason?
Or all of the above
I'm thinking at this point, we could set up a relationship between Hemdul and Jarilo pretty easily.
15:26
Gives some room to explore
Not sure if fits the story.
Maybe it's almost too easy at this point to set it up?
I don't see why not... They at least have friendship, so maybe at some point it could deepen... Their characters are pretty wide open.
I guess have to see if it makes sense, depending on what other events transpire.
Or maybe they are already a couple
and the family they are talking about is their possible future kids
Being a couple (or almost a couple) would give a pretty strong reason for her to go with him.
Trying to think of other ones. I was thinking she perhaps was just like him, but you just broke that with her bringing up the sister thing again, showing she doesn't necessarily agree.
Or maybe she didn't agree the first time, but she does now that the phylacteries are gone?
I just brought that up since he was talking about doing this "for the family" while leaving a member of his family to die... seemed like a contradiction. And her response was just calling him out on that.
Ah.
Good catch.
15:46
Though maybe I used the wrong word. If they are close enough in age to both be doing the quest at the same time, it's possible that she's only his step sister... Might be something to fix in edit. That could be part of the resentment. If quarters are already tight, then getting a new sister when the parent remarried might have made things harder, especially if there is some natural personality conflict/rivalry between them.
Yeah, I think I'm going to retcon that in, unless one of the mods wants to just edit it for me
You know, this is fun. Relationships are developing and making us kind of think on our feet as the story moves along :)
Alternately, Jarilo and Hemdul could've stuck together because of clannishness. Maybe they are cousins?
Or uncle/niece or aunt/nephew.
It is an interesting process, not having full control of the story. On one hand it can throw a wrench into future plans, especially if someone has wildly different ideas on where it should go, but on the other hand having someone else helping guide the story can bring out some really neat ideas. Like the whole shadow thing, which I never would have thought of based on my original thoughts.
Personally, I'm going to wait to define it until a situation comes along that makes sense. Try not to paint the story into a corner. Of course if you (or anyone else) already has an idea then that's fine.
Why I'm glad that we never specified if Jarilo was male or female way back when.
Keeps us from having to pull new characters out of nowhere and end up with a "Too Many Cooks" situation.
Yep.
Right now, I'm trying to consider all the potential reasons so we A) have something to develop 10 chapters down the road, and B) have a plausible reason she went with him.
Why would someone go with someone else? Either they believe in the same idea(s), they are clannish, they are sweethearts, or (error: undefined).
16:03
makes sense
For example, we don't need to decide just now, but considering potential paths will likely make the story more coherent as a whole when we reveal it later.
@Hosch250 Yup. The current story is a result of some people thinking it should be hard science fiction, and others thinking it should be fantasy. The whole thing is an exercise in seat of the pants writing, but a little fore planning could go a long way
The funny thing is it actually works good, IMO, as a blend of the two.
17:03
@AndyD273 don't add any detail until it is necessary for the story ;)
Ahem
Is there any standard comment to leave when someone accepts an answer very very very soon after asking?
Thinking @Secespitus would know :)
@dot You might want to mention in the questionaire that you have lots of experience over on SO. Could make people accept your lower rep score here a bit more (just a fair tip.)
@FoxElemental "I see that you've already accepted an answer. Just as a little tip for the future: it's recommended to wait at least 24 hours before accepting an answer as we have users all around the globe, many of which might not have seen your post. Some of these might be discouraged from interacting with your question if they see that you have already found a solution that works for you. Of course it's completely up to you whether to accept something and if so when and what."
@FoxElemental I don't have that much experience over at SO (?)
@FoxElemental You can also link here
Ah lovely, I'd be very sad to not see you in the favourites for the mod position @Secespitus

17:16
@dot_Sp0T Thank you very much :D I wish you the best of luck, too.
@Secespitus ah, I don't think I have a chance :)
@dot_Sp0T The site needs two more mods though ;)
@Secespitus thanks
@FoxElemental no problem
@Secespitus yeah, and the slot that ain't filled by you will get Dutch or JBH ;)
17:20
@dot Well, nominations aren't over . . . let's see who else steps up. I was hoping Mołot or maybe Pavel . . .
(No offense meant to any candidate)
I don't see Molot nominating themselves
@dot_Sp0T We'll see how the majority votes in the end. The majority of not-so-regular users will decide in the end.
I'd def vote for Pavel, but I think they're not the type for it
Mołot
not Molot.
@FoxElemental Nobody can type that :D
17:21
the ł is pronounced "w." "Mowot"
Alas you're right, but I admit finding it hard to type non-ASCII characters on my keyboard
Really? I can. That's because I have weird little symbols and letters written down on a computer board that I copy+paste.
I confess^
but ALT is nice too
I soemtimes even write ae or :a because I am too lazy to press " + a when chatting
Huh. Google says ALT+0322, but that produces "B"
Weird
Oh, hi @HDE
Gtg. I'll brb
One question done, 9 to go

2 hours later…
19:09
hmm I'll continue tomorrow
19:35
Ever hear of the emperor with the servant named Kilim?
This servant was the official executioner (he had several unofficial ones too, of course). So, whenever he gave someone the death sentence, he would yell "Kilim!"
Now that was a bad pun (pun intended).
19:48
Now, if I'm understanding correctly, WorldBuilding is basically like "Here's all my work. I'm ready to put it in a story. Please give me a duh-check just in case I missed something"?
And it truly has to be developed enough to be put in a story as-is, even if the story would have major problems because the author overlooked something?
@Hosch250 That's actually a perfect description for the tag.
OK, I guess I'm now a expert :)
Yes.
Though often it's used to reality check very very specific parts
Like
Of course.
(I have this complex handwaved magic system, but can my __ do__ within it?
It's not always checking if everything is realistic. It depends on the set of the premise
19:59
Hmm.
Reality-check can go with any tag. (Magic, science-based, hard-science, sociology, logic, etc.)
Reading the tag wiki, this needs help: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/117120/…
So you can reality-check a soft-magic question, though often not a good fit
But science-based and hard-science don't mix
@Hosch250 You can post a question without having a full solution. You just need enough of a solution that people will be able to answer the question.
I'd say that you need a framework you are working in and that people are supposed to work in when trying to help you with a specific problem that arises in your specific setup.
20:02
"What kind of animal should I have?" is not good. "How do I get a predator that can mask its thermal signature from the front but not the sides?" is better
Its.
Thank you.
Sorry, I'm very meticulous/correct even with "text talk."
One of the phrases that bothers me the most is "IKR?" Because it should be "IK,R?" It drives me a little crazy.
and provide any extra info that is needed for people to provide a good answer.
@FoxElemental IKR?
Sorry, I couldn't help it.
@FoxElemental its ok /s
@Hosch Ah, hah, hah, AAAAH!
20:05
@Hosch250 Dont be mean ;)
@FoxElemental Was that the InvisAlign?
@Hosch250 Good one :D
@Hosch250 Very funny. No. It was the "IKR/ok /s/Dont"
@FoxElemental You have now revealed your weakness... Im sorry for what will follow.
@Andy My weakness? Why are you giving me cookies?
What did I ever say about cookies?
20:07
@FoxElemental Cookies? Hmmm. I think FaceBook would be happy to give you those.
Oh dear. Can we stop with the puns?
(Edit intentional.)
Well, I read a book with lots of puns.
Like the cop who put a sign up at a busy intersection: For that run-down feeling, try crossing here against the light.
If this is where the conversation is going, I'll go back on main and weep while I edit.
Just kidding, just kidding.
@Hosch250 Ooh I missed my chance to say "this is fine" at that point.
May I?
Yes.
Thank you.
20:11
back in college a english major friend of mine let people know that she was annoyed with some of our poor word choices. i tormented her for the rest of the year by adding er and est at the end of words to emphasise when something was extra emphasised. like "betterest' and occasionally "gooderest"...
LOL.
*shudder*
@AndyD273 This is the worstest Ive ever hat to read
@Secespitus I can do worsterest
pls dnt mk me git oot me worstester grammer
20:17
@Hosch250 Holy... we have a winner.
@Hosch250 Is that cockney?
I have no idea what it is.
It looks like a mix of cockney, irish, backwoodsman, and internet slang to me.
It looks like demonic possession to me
P̷̜͍̱͇͉̲̥͎͕̰̘̏̅̈͊̀̋̍̀́̆̇͑̅̚h̴̢̛͎̟͚̻͈͖͚̓̐͂̍̐̂͂͛͝ͅ'̸̰̝̼͚̖͑̎̔̆̿͋̃̈̾̽̓͜͠n̴̈͗̍͗̈́̐̑͒͆͠‌̡̻̰̭͙̼̪̏ģ̶͖̱͕̰̪̳̪̭̰̞͍̩̖̠̿̈́͗̐̉̊͛͆͑̒̕ḽ̶̈́̈̃̄̒̐͝u̸̡̡̢̗̙̠̹̬̱̖͎̼̰͐̂͂́̈́̽̈́̐̏͊̚͘͜͜ȉ̵̫͆͠‌̧͙̝̻̲̞!̵̡̡̢̛͎͚̫̞͚͙͓̃̒͐̽͑̓̆͗͘͘͠͝͝
Nah, it doesn't look quite like that to me.
20:22
Oh, plenty of demonic possession experts in the house today, eh?
. . . what was that supposed to imply?
@HDE226868 As always :D
@Hosch250 That's what a possessed person would say.
/shrug
Do you hear them? The grammar police! T̵̥̼̲̳͕̙̓̋̐̋̽̑h̵̢̺̭̄̓̑͘ͅe̷̢͉͚͈͇̥̾́̓̈́ẙ̵̺͚̖̏̾͜͠ ̸̬͈̦̀͌̂́̓c̴͉̆̅o̷͉̮̙͎̮͖̓͘ṃ̵̭̖͉̎͠è̷͍̭͂̕͠!̸̝̳̱͒͗̈̀ͅ
I JUST HAD AN IDEA FOR Gold Initiative . . .
lemme jot it down
Okay, got it
@FoxElemental THE MUSIC!
Laugh out loud. Which isn't really possible on a computer.
Well, I have to run (and not because of the grammar police.)
See you
21:08
Any Ethereum experts in here?
@Aify You might have better luck on the Ethereum site.
That is true. But based on their answers and questions, I doubt it.
I mean that it's true that I "Might" have better luck there XD
Yeah. A lot of SE sites are really small.
Well, Andy is in the chatroom there. Not sure if he just beat me to the room, though, since the conversation came up.
@Hosch250 Yeah, I just popped in to see what kind of traffic it sees... Not much
That chatroom is super dead.
Forget it lol
22:13
hey there @Aify and @MikeNichols
22:31
You should see Constructed Languages SE or even Writing on a bad day.
@Shalvenay Hello
how're things going?
@Shalvenay Just finishing composing a question
Hey, in terms of tags, we have a tag for , ,, and . But we don't have tags for the Bronze Age or the Iron Age.
Who do I talk to to remedy this?
@MikeNichols You should be able to make new tags, given that you have >300 rep on the site.
Just type the tag name into the regular bar when editing or posting a question.
@HDE226868 Ah, great. Well. bronze-age will soon exist. I'll have to think of another question about the Iron Age.
22:42
Call out to the factory floor: I'm planning on posting this Sandboxed draft w/in 3 days, and would appreciate a little more feedback on the draft before I do so (It's a short read.)
@MikeNichols Huh, strange. How much are those tags used compared to one another?
Stoneage has 8
Middle-ages has 25
Industrial-age has 17
and modern-age has 142
@Mike Ooh, but use the search bar: type in "bronze age" without the quotation marks and look at the number of results
@FoxElemental Time for some enterprising person to go and edit onto each of those questions.
"Time for some enterprising person to go and edit bronze-age onto each of those questions." So . . not me?
Sniff. @Mike I re-tagged a handful of questions, but your instant edit privileges would probably be better for that.
Oh, wow. Whoever was on the review queues on this question was slacking. TONS of new user posts. I left comments on all that I thought worth it pointing towards the help center, tour, meta, Sandbox, etc.
This is not an answer, just a semi-religious (not any religion I know) rant . . .
Same question (so, really slacking on review queues. It had an upvote: assuming someone didn't even read it to see it was a religious rant and just upvoted to get the review done. Whoever did that: REAL SMART.
Is this an appropriate username? Not sure . . .
