Q: How are the "anatomically correct" questions asking for evolutionary insight on-topic?

JBHWhen this question was recently posted I voted to close it based on it being either too broad or primarily opinion-based. Take your pick. The OP pointed out there is a lengthy history of "anatomically correct" questions that frequently ask for insight into the evolutionary possibility of mythic...

@Mithrandir24601 uhm, chin chin
(context: I just got back from China yesterday)
ooooh, how was it?
Also chin chin is a thing, isn't it?
@dot_Sp0T yeah - it actually originates from Chinese :P
@dot_Sp0T Really good :D I was there for a conference, so I didn't really get much of a chance to look round or anything though
Physics, right?
yep - "trapped quantum systems", so talks were about things like heading towards quantum computation with things like ion traps and improving the accuracy of atomic clocks (apparently we're now at a precision of about 1 second out every billion years or so in the lab, although different labs disagree with the actual transition frequency, so an actual clock would be more like 1 second out every million years or so, at a rough guess)
09:35
this sounds pretty... precise
Then there was some stuff on simulating atoms and molecules, breaking charge, parity and time (CPT) symmetry, and so on
@dot_Sp0T Yep :P
09:51
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey one might almost say
I sadly don't understand anything at all on the subject, so I'm no good talking...
@dot_Sp0T Aw :/ There's no better time to start learning than the present!
actually, no
maybe in 8 hours
right now I have to prep for a practica
and after that I gotta finish an assignment
so maybe at 2200 UTC?

Has anyone seen anything like, or anything as creative as the soul smithing system from paper mario and the everclear night? There are nine basic 'humors' which basically represent sociableness, passion, stubbornness, thinking of others, peace, creativity, logic, eccentricity, and odium. They are represented by liquids, and can be distilled, diluted, mixed, crystallised etc. Each soul is made of 2-4 humors.

@Piomicron I have not.

Q: We have passed 100,000 posts on the main site!

Michael KjörlingI just noticed that we have now officially passed 100,000 posts on the main site. Thanks to all of you for contributing, and keeping contributing!

So, how is the story so far?
Has my reference to an Old Earth been retconned or what?
14:11
@FutureHistorian just read up on the story?
14:21
I did.
It looks like it is still there.
So why did you so aggressively ask if it has been retconned?
14:32
Because I got scared for a minute there.
breathes a sigh of relief
@dot_Sp0T? Is a seed ship practical?
As in: a spacecraft that is fully automated carrying frozen human embryos to a distant star system with a habitable world?
practical for what?
@Green I just saw both your dino questions in the HNQ at tthe same time. Looks like velociraptors are pretty cool after all
Also, someone else add some story, I don't want to go again right after Bellerophon
Always ask yourself: Is it relevant to the story right now?
@kingledion I'll have a go in some 3hrs probably
If it is not relevant then it doesn't go into the writing. Only relevant things go into writing. You can add tidbits of information but they should have relevance. Currently the story is told out of the Shoulder Perspective (or 2nd Person, or whatever it is in Inglese)
@dot_Sp0T ....are you Italian?
14:49
Interstellar colonisation. @dot_Sp0T.
Basically, you have a spacecraft with an AI, some frozen embryos, construction robots and all of our scientific and cultural knowledge sent to a distant star to colonise a habitable exoplanet.
Well, AGI to be specific.
@dot_Sp0T Ok, I looked up 'shoulder perspective.' I think that should be '3rd person, subjective' in English.
@dot_Sp0T? Is such an interstellar seedship practical or is it going to have problems right from the start?
Because I am thinking of making that my Plan B for humanity; our final legacy to the stars, should humanity perish here on Earth.
@kingledion Those questions are the gifts that keep on giving. I'm still getting up votes on the T-Rex question.
@kingledion? Do you feel an interstellar seedship is practical or fail?
Also, I got my Epic badge yesterday. Pretty happy about that one.
14:58
@FutureHistorian What is an interstellar seedship
@Green Hey, so I have nothing to do at work today, and I'm working on making a meta post with fun statistics about the site
So I've got three good ones: highest comments per post by user; highest votes per post by user (its 138!); and most characters posted by user
Can you think of any other fun things to look up?
@kingledion Yeah, give me a second or two.
@kingledion I just saw your answer to my telescope question. Thank you, it's really good.
@HDE226868 You're welcome. My daughter woke me up at 4:30 this morning, so you got that post while she sat on the floor in the basement and made monster noises.
6
I was in the basement too, in case that made me sound like a bad dad.
Only slightly. I'm not judging.
@Johnny What'd I do?
@kingledion Starring for posterity and any future investigations.
@kingledion (bahahahahaha)
15:10
Its all fun and games on the internet until someone gets their child repo'd
lol
@Green Impressive. I've only maxxed rep...14 times.
15:29
@kingledion I've got a question exploring what would happen if parents didn't own their children.
@kingledion Average number of characters changed per edit. max number of characters changed per edit.
Oooh, I dunno if I can do the edits.
Let me look into that
Can you do average length of questions and answers?
I see we have a lot of paloozas going on at the moment.
@kingledion I have an iteration on Reptiles<Mammals comparison that I think you might be interested in (given your excellent answers to the T-Rex and Velociraptor questions).
@HDE226868 Aren't you in the holiday spirit?
@Green Length of questions and answers is up
15:40
@James when am I going to get the tectonics map from you?
@kingledion I am indeed. I'd be wearing a Santa hat . . . if I had a Santa hat.
@HDE226868 Santa Clause is coming to your palooza,....town
@kingledion ....no? Why?
@dot_Sp0T You referred to English as Inglese
yeah I wanted to relax the mood

Q: Holiday Data-palooza: Site statistics from 2017

kingledionOther Person: Hey, King, remember that one time you said you learned all that stuff about the Stack Exchange Data Explorer? kingledion: ...yeah... Other Person: Well I have some questions about how this site got used in 2017... kingledion: Like....what kind of questions? What users generated...

@kingledion "Jolly old Saint Neutrino, send a Joule this way/Don't you miss my detector; I need it today/Supernova's coming soon; I hope it won't pan/Just give me some energy: As much as you can."
5
There, see? I'm jolly.
Hmmmmm, you can call that song "Armageddon in 8 minutes or less"
3
Sounds super jolly
If you're far enough away, it looks nice and probably won't strip the ozone layer from your planet.
3
Probably.
Back....
@kingledion. An interstellar seedship is basically a spacecraft that carries frozen embryos to other, potentially habitable worlds capable of sustaining life, where they are unfrozen, placed in artificial wombs, and raised by an AGI to be the first generation of humans born on another star system.
Basically, think of the Endurance from Interstellar, but no human input and with artificial wombs, construction robots, a scientific and cultural database containing ALL of our collective knowledge, etc.
And an Artificial General Intelligence (basically, human-like AI).
16:15
Hey @kingledion, can you do most flags by a user, flags accepted vs. rejected on average across the site, most rejected flags by a user, and most accepted flags by a user?
For the data-palooza, I mean?
@Green Hey I can't do the edit length. When new edits are posted in the database, it includes the entire text. So I'd have to download all the text and diff them on my computer, and I don't think that is worth it.
@Gryphon the flags don't appear to be permanantly retained in the database. The oldest flag is from December 3.
Oh well :(
@Green Soon (TM)
@kingledion Don't worry about it then.
@James Are we talking soon-soon or Aslan soon (as in, "All times to me are soon") ;)
17:00
@Green Yes.
@James well ain't you clever?
:D
I'm in none of the lists :(
@Green not really, its not noon yet and I still have a few ounces of coffee in my tumbler.
@dot_Sp0T Lists?
17:10
i miss the SGR

@James You put a bounty on the question? So I assumed you wanted more answers for it.
18:03
So, @James? Could such an interstellar embryo colonisation ark be sent out into the void?
@FutureHistorian Are you planning to put up a new part for the story?
More or less.
Why, what happened?
Nothing, just wondered.
18:24
So, @Bellerophon? Is that concept plausible?
Because I think I have an idea.
@kingledion do you have a query that gets all the questions for a given user and the view counts for their questions?
@Bellerophon? Where do you think the spacecraft that sent the colonists to the Upsilon Andromedae d m VII moon is....or what is left of it?
I think my T-Rex question is my highest viewed question ever. It hit 20K today.
Because I have an idea.
The idea is: basically that the group later in the challenges stumble into a wreck from the spacecraft that sent them here.
You know: the colonists.
18:48
@Gryphon? Where were the challenges from Star Wars written?
19:02
@Green So, it seems the public access database is a few days out of date. The last post I can access is from 10 Dec at 2:33:14, which is right before your dino question got asked.
However, since your highest on Dec 10th was worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/25724/…; I'd say T. Rex is double your next best post
@kingledion Thanks!
@Johnny Feel free, if we get good new answers thats a good place to give out bounties.
Anyone know how the cosmic brain hat is earned?
19:36
@James Spend $5 on pink yarn and ask someone nicely.
@James Yes I do.
20:06
Well, RIP.
Goodbye, Internet. I just....hope that the corporate bastards in the States can not spread their grip on the world.
Well, the rest of the world to be specific.
@James I have now quantified your awesome, if you care to look back at the data-palooza.
@kingledion I love how you added stuff like "134. James: 1 James" :D
I aim to please....and have nothing to do at work
2
20:34
@kingledion How about a hit rate on percentage of answers written that were accepted
I know I shouldn't but... I got as far as reading "Which users are the most awesome in units of James"... upvotes
@kingledion True and utter brilliance. You shall henceforth be known as kingledavinci.
Although, bother - I'm not in the top 5 Site Maintenance :/
(i suppose I don't really edit at all to be fair)
Did someone here steal 16,000 posts? My current bet is @James, but I'm not positive.
20:50
Is anyone aware of questions on sociopathy?
...that I could go read up on?
@HDE226868 That'd be a good bet, and I probably would if I knew how...
@Green On the site?
@Green apart from ones where we casually discuss killing off 90% of the population of the world? Probably not, we have a habit of closing questions depending on soft sciences
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the URL sociopaths.stackexchange.com redirects to Worldbuilding.
8
@kingledion can you make up any statistics where I win?
20:57
@HDE226868 Many stars. Much funny.
@HDE226868 on the site.
@Separatrix I'm interested in sociopathy itself, not the world destroying effects of it.
I'm working on a question about time traveling sociopaths.
@Green So in episode 3 we had the rhino people as bipedal and I think in 4 we had them being centaur style...whoops.
@Green Please tell me when you post that. lol.
@James Maybe there's convergent evolution of two species that end up in the same place. Rhino people from the four limbs line and rhino people from the six limbs line.
@James Sure thing.
Regarding the SGR: Did we just hit a conflict of interests..? We have Bremdag leaving his home and everything behind for the unknown. People happily and determined running for the treeline. And now the same Bremdag complains about the choice he made..? :/
21:04
@dot_Sp0T Sounds about right, what better time to regret than when it's already too late?
Oooooohhh Nice question!
Jarilo is the sister in the SGR?
@HDE226868 no, Jarilo would be the third unknown figure: worldbuilding.meta.stackexchange.com/a/5679/2746
@HDE226868 Jarilo is the third of the three that joined at the beginning
@kingledion beat ya
21:07
@dot_Sp0T Ah, I forgot about that post. Thanks (and thanks @kingledion).
@dot_Sp0T Well, I can check, but I don't know how much time I have to find something you are good at :)
@Mithrandir24601 Thanks.
@HDE226868 I got a 404 but the custom error message was very telling. It included the word "yet" in it.
@dot_Sp0T Ok this is the best I've got so far: if you rank all users by the minimum of highest voted question and highest voted answer in the computers tag, then you are second behind @MichaelKjorling with 55 to his 57
You need 3 more upvotes on this one: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/97615/…
I've just been reminded of this and thought I should share it for those who haven't yet had the pleasure: blogs.sciencemag.org/pipeline/archives/2010/02/23/…
It includes such gems as:

Hydrogen sulfide, for example, reacts with four molecules of FOOF to give sulfur hexafluoride, 2 molecules of HF and four oxygens. . .and 433 kcal, which is the kind of every-man-for-himself exotherm that you want to avoid at all cost.
21:21
@kingledion so I truly am mediocre at best
@dot_Sp0T You're my favorite Worldbuilder with a username that is also a strong password ?
2
In the Navy you need eight characters and at least one of uppercase, lowercase, number and symbol, so there you go!
@HDE226868 It's so good, that you're even tempting me to write up my first answer in almost 10 months :P
@James I think you're going to like this question. I'm having a really good time writing it.
21:48
@FutureHistorian "...He started thinking briefly. Then it came to him." < what came to him? I am not sure I'm getting your vibe here :/
21:59
@Mithrandir24601 Answers are always welcome and appreciated. Good answers even more so. :-)
22:14
@Green Ok someone just downvoted my answer on your "Ship crossing the pacific question"
...apparently that's what I get for offering a bounty.
@James lame.
Maybe altruism is out of vogue?
@James do you mind linking the question? I am sure you can get many more downvotes if you just want it enough
@dot_Sp0T lol. its on the bounty list.
@James well, maybe it's your attitude that makes people downvote you
@James I really want to downvote you, but it's so much answer to read just to find a superficial reason :/
@kingledion you're too kind :)
22:19
@James We've already had 15 bounties offered for a total of 1700 points. That's half (or more) of last year's 28 bounties for 2600 points.
@dot_Sp0T Thankfully you are lazy. I appreciate it.
There it is.
I hope people have as much fun reading and answering that as I did writing it.

@Green The first sentence seems to have lost some words.
@HDE226868 Thank you. Fixed.
22:36
Well, I am trying to make the character think of something he hadn’t, up until that point, thought of.
@dot_Sp0T.
it just feels weird, somehow. It's like a few hours ago he was determined to leave behind everything and now he suddenly does a 180, questions the whole thing and everyone is shocked and whatnot?
why?
@dot_Sp0T what are you referring to?
22:51
@Green trying to understand @FutureHistorian 's last part of the SGR so I can write-up something before going to bed
Well, I just thought it would be a bad sign to leave someone that is already injured behind to die.
As in: would he REALLY want to do that?
@FutureHistorian Bremdag? No, at least not according to the story written so far. It is Hemdul that has been written as a character that would leave others behind if they are of no use to him anymore.
What I am currently struggling with is to comprehend the sudden change in Bremdags attitude towards the challenges; and the groups response to his utterings
@dot_Sp0T ah, got it.
Does that make sense? I mean how I put it?
What I feel would continue the flow of the story, and what I am/was intending to write, is how Hemdul would stand up to Bremdag again and assert dominance or such - but that would end up too much towards reducing the whole passage to a 'little episode' or something like that, and I feel that wouldn't be fair to it or you
@dot_Sp0T I was planning a little bit on them making tea...
23:06
@Mithrandir24601 oh, if you see a neat way to continue the narrative without discrediting any previous written passage please be my guest - I am also looking forward to read your writing :)
hey there @Green and @Mithrandir24601
@dot_Sp0T OK - if you give me a few minutes to make some tea for inspiration for writing about someone making tea :P
@Shalvenay ni hao!
@Mithrandir24601 how're things going?
@Shalvenay Good, thanks :) Things are beginning to settle down for Christmas and I've started thinking about the overall direction for my PhD (or at least, for the next year or so), which is pretty exciting :) How're things with you?
@Mithrandir24601 alright here, thinking to myself...which of the Westerosian nobles would fare best if plopped into our world all-of-a-sudden, and which would fare worst?
23:11
@Shalvenay Depends where in the world for a start...
@Mithrandir24601 lets start with a major city xD
@Shalvenay ah, but which country?
@Mithrandir24601 hrm, USA?
@Shalvenay If it's a wealthy area of the city, I think the likes of Cersei might do quite well actually - rich and arrogant - something the Americans seem to be able to cope with :P Euron wouldn't as he'd just immediately threaten people (at best) and would probably just end up getting shot or something
@Shalvenay hey!
23:20
@Mithrandir24601 heheheh. lets go with a rural area this time (still USA)
@Shalvenay For a poorer area, I'd think someone like Arya, the Hound or Brienne, who aren't unreasonable people (in the same way as e.g. Cersei or Euron) but also more 'street aware' would do quite well, while any of the 'non-street-aware' people would just end up getting into trouble (i.e. either get robbed or get into a fight or something)
@Mithrandir24601 yeah, I suspect their bigger problem would be trying to understand infrastructural hazards and not people-hazards if you will (i.e. Arya wouldn't get into trouble with muggers or thugs, but she sure as heck could get herself in a lot of trouble if she poked Needle into something that bites back at 480V AC!)
@Shalvenay Hmm... Possible actually similar to 'poorer area', only replace 'street aware' with 'being able to survive by themselves outside' :P, so Arya, the Hound or Brienne would still do quite well while maybe e.g. any of the Lannisters wouldn't
@Mithrandir24601 yeah, I think say Brienne would be well at home in the middle of nowhere xD
@Shalvenay Possibly - is carbon steel that conductive?
23:31
@Mithrandir24601 it's less the actual shock hazard and more the arc flash that'd get her I reckon
I mean, it's a thin, relatively long object
@Shalvenay Ah, fair. I suppose she'd never have seen electricity before :P
@Mithrandir24601 yeah. who'd be the most likely to fall prey to infrastructure hazards, for that matter? (whether it be getting fried, blown up, squished, ...)
(and the least likely, too)
Who's the most and least cautious in a new environment?
@Mithrandir24601 that'd be part of it, and there'd also be the ability to recognize things as hazards.
@Mithrandir24601 and it also depends on what sort of hazard it is. I could see the Greyjoys or the Lannisters being arrogant enough to get pissed off at a set of grade-crossing gates "turnpiking" the road on them and trying to go around...
whereas, someone like Arya probably would not pay much heed to fences and rights-of-way and thus find themselves getting shocked to oblivion in a substation or the likes
or would you think otherwise?
swats Arya away from a bunch of live parts with a linesman's hot stick "Miss, do you realize that you just came a foot or two from crispy-frying yourself to a crackly crunch?"
23:46
@FutureHistorian I think you should build up to changes more slowly. Drop hints that he is becoming more disillusioned with the void over time. In the story he goes from enthusiastic about the void to not caring in about a second for no clear reason.
hey there @Bellerophon
