@JDługosz It is clearly off topic and asks for others opinions. The questioner so far has stated, I know all about Side A and would like opinions comparing side A to side B .... which the questioner knows nothing about. In my opinion, this is yet question, with the intent of arguing politics. Wraping it in a fig leaf of On Alternate Reality Path B, Colonized World B etc. will not change the intent.
00:23
@EnigmaMaitreya “is yet question”?
On a lighter note, I have the Mary Poppins song “I Love to Laugh” stuck in my head.

@JDługosz :) " “is yet question”?" is a mind to fingers edit of the first edition :( should have been "is a question"

Q: Human colony on distant planet system with very short day-night cycles

adoniesThis question is for sci-fi writing novel. The premise is that this planet is generally habitable, and a human colony has been established. The point is that, at the equator, day (also night) last about 8 hours. The axial tilt is about the same as Earth's. All other things should be considered p...

The (new) author appears responsive to feedback, with edits. Please take a look at whether this should be reopened or, if not, what else is needed. Let's see if we can give a new user who's making an effort a good experience, ok?

@MonicaCellio Now it's pretty much a duplicate, as Monica will recall.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

JDługoszSandbox Notes This is inspired by What are some main advantages Communism has over Capitalism after some thought and discussion over what would make a suitable question on WB. To that end, it’s not a discussion of economic systems or political systems in and of itself. It’s in the context of a ...

I thought about this more than once, but am I the only one that finds this advert offensive/dismissive of the work we do on here? worldbuilding.meta.stackexchange.com/a/4378/2746

@dot_Sp0T Nope. I knew some people who loved bug they also had amazing voices.
@dot_Sp0T I can see what you mean but I think the intent is more to get people off the internet and engaged in their real communities. The ad is not made in opposition to WB.
@dot_Sp0T Drunken singing is a time honored and noble tradition.
@Green I know that. I just always get the feeling that it comes over somewhat aggressively :/
13:32
@sphennings for that reason, I was thinking the war eagles wouldn't be attacking the archers. They'd be attacking the infantry, which is another reason it'd be hard for the archers to shoot them
Infantry probably have spears and helmets. Eagles would be distracting at most.
yeah, but distracting at the right time could be devastating
you don't want your spearmen looking up when the enemy spearmen arrive
That supposes eagles smart enough to distinguish between our soldiers and enemy soldiers when they are pressed together in combat.
hmm, yeah that could be an issue. I think they could tell the formations apart, but distinguishing which formations are the bad ones could be tricky
13:55
@Green Is there an advantage to this? In the context that the Local Communities governance can be dealt with by the community being on the internet?
@EnigmaMaitreya It's a QA site for urban planning and building and designing communities. While it may answer questions about governance, it isn't there to govern anybody.
@sphennings ?
@dot_Sp0T I don't see an issue with it. I've considered trying a similar strategy by advertising HEMA to RPG-players. If they were being dismissive of us, they wouldn't be advertising to us
@DaaaahWhoosh That's how I sold larping to my gaming buddies. "It's like D&D except you can get some fresh air and exercise."
@DaaaahWhoosh idk. It just feels like it's saying that we're wasting time on here instead of doing something productive/real - Guess I've got some bias due to how my parents used to comment on the time I spent on the computer back in school^^
14:10
@dot_Sp0T yeah, I know what you mean. Far as my parents are concerned, none of you exist
@DaaaahWhoosh that's nice
Any ideas on how to quickly get 800 rep?
be the first answer on a clickbait question
@DaaaahWhoosh don't you feel like writing up some clickbait question(s) that you need answers with my unique wit for? ;)
I could probably ask a neon kitten question...
@DaaaahWhoosh about how to get them glowing?
14:17
no, that one already exists
@DaaaahWhoosh yeah, was just looking it up
oh, and it has a Monica-answer
@DaaaahWhoosh can you link me?
retroactive-linked
@DaaaahWhoosh cheeky
14:20
@dot_Sp0T I known Zizouz212 from other sites, and I can confirm that it's not a jab at us. He was hoping to get some crossover from Worldbuilding to the Urban Planning Area 51 proposal, AFAIK, assuming that folks from each would be interested in the other - so trying to promote cross-site stuff. (cc @Green)
I guess if Urban Planning ever takes off we can propose a WB ad for them
@HDE226868 Yeah Ziz has stopped in here a few times and has always been friendly.
@HDE226868 yeah no I didn't take it as an attack. I just eventually wanted to bring it up when there's less activity in here :)
@dot_Sp0T yes, a number of years ago I bought my wife an 80 VCD set, plus a few select CD-G and had to figure out Windows player add-in to show the words. The wireless microphones died rather soon, though.
@dot_Sp0T why do you ask?
@HDE226868 good to know.
14:22
@JDługosz wanted to pick up a new/old hobby :) I've used to be singing all the time back when I still went to school in the neighbouring village (20min bycicle rides are perfect for that stuff), but I kinda lost that when I started having to take the bus/train to uni/work
@dot_Sp0T what's offensive about it? I see a town square or mall, nothing odd.
@JDługosz the wording ticked a few boxes in my head. I guess I get that as soon as someone starts calling something real and thus indirectly something else not real. The picture is amazing
@dot_Sp0T well, there’s a 200 per day cap for normal votes. You could hire a ghostwriter and bribe people to award bounties to you.
@JDługosz that is an intriguing idea. I guess I gotta put some ad on craigslist
@dot_Sp0T why do you need 800 points? Is approving wiki tag edits that important to you?
14:33
@JDługosz it feels like I should start work on getting the 10k rep anytime soon. I mean I've been here for a really long time :/
@dot_Sp0T You could do what I do and glibly shoot people's ideas down.
@sphennings I figure I'm doing that already :/ But apparently close votes don't get me any rep :D
@dot_Sp0T 2 years 7 months. But you don't visit every day.
@JDługosz where do you get my stats from? I can't seem to find yours
@dot_Sp0T well, you only have 44 answers in all that time! There’s your problem. Look how many I have.
@dot_Sp0T profile page. Has a few tabs.
@dot_Sp0T click on the name in WB, or use the Users top-level menu item to look it up.
14:41
@JDługosz yeah, it's hard to find questions that I find confident in actually answering. Most of them have great answers at the global time I get to them
@dot_Sp0T anyway, sustained mediocrity seems to be how I got my ginormous rep. I get a few upvotes a day from old questions, even if I don't do anything.
@dot_Sp0T start with some old questions, chosen to be in your area. Take your time coming up with the answer. No pressure, being already past the “hot” period.
@dot_Sp0T here are my stats.
@JDługosz yeah I know. I mean I cannot find where on the stats page your 'uptime' is listed
I guess it's part of the 25k site-statistics privilege
oh yeah, my stats tell me how many days I've visited, but I don't see that for other people
@dot_Sp0T leftmost tab, upper right corner.
As whoosh says, nopedy-nothing up there :)
14:50
probably a mod thing
@DaaaahWhoosh well there's the 25k privilege granting access to site statistics - might be that
@JDługosz yeah, don't get to see that number on your profile. Only everything above it
@DaaaahWhoosh no, it's always been there that I've noticed. Probably rep level.
@JDługosz it's accessible on your own page allways. But not on others :)
And yeah, getting online everyday is difficult depending on work-hours and where I am in the world :D

Q: Why visited number of days in profile page of other users is not shown in us?

Somnath MulukThe user's Profile shows only member for attribute of users. I have seen some users who have last visited in 2009. And still they are member for 3 years and 4 months. So I thought the profile should have shown the number of visited days which interprets how active (or addicted) the user is. S...

@dot_Sp0T “expanded usercard” is at rep 1000. AAh, you see the box, just not the visited days (other than on yourself)? Might be level for site stats or that's a mod thing. You see “member for 2 years…” right?
@dot_Sp0T cron wget…
@dot_Sp0T ok, the “last seen” is visible, though.
location, site, member for, profile views, last seen are visible
as are answers, questions, and people reached
the only one missing is visited/consecutive
@JDługosz well that'd be fake
@dot_Sp0T I think a biff program that lets me know about my notifications (if any) is a valid use. On the mobile platforms that is built-in to their offical stack exchange app.
@JDługosz yeah there seems to be much on the mobile platform that isn't available to all mobiles. But such is life

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

user2259716I suspect the phrasing of this question will be an issue, and would welcome feedback on how to rephrase it. Universe: All conscious beings have souls. The souls are tethered to their bodies and have a sympathetic relationship with their bodies. If the soul is somehow destroyed or damaged, the...

16:26
That answer genuinely baffled me. I hope I did the right thing by passing it through as alright, but it thinks just so much outside the box that it is genius.
the question seems too broad, but that is a great answer
@James let me know next time you're eating food
3
@DaaaahWhoosh do you mean @James, Steward of WB, Crusher of Dreams, Lord of The Factory Floor, First of his name ?
@dot_Sp0T I mean James, Steward of WB, Crusher of Dreams, Lord of the Factory Floor, First of his name, snorter of beverages
5
17:27
@DaaaahWhoosh Wow...that happens a lot.
@James yeah, someday I hope to catch you drinking vodka next to an open flame
@DaaaahWhoosh You missed your window, I was doing that on Monday.
@dot_Sp0T funny though, that “alright” is not “all right” in English. I’ve just read worm and that’s one of his affectations and heavily used by every character. After a few thousand it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard now.
@DaaaahWhoosh well, getting people to spray their monitors during chat is a thing…
@JDługosz Although if enough people start using it as such often enough...
17:48
@JDługosz alright
2
@DaaaahWhoosh You know that's how titles expand ;) We'll have to see if we can help him beat the 18th Duchess of Alba someday
Idi Amin's titles are not the longest, but are pretty funny:His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin Dada, Victorious Cross, Distinguished Service Order and Military Cross recipient, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular, Uncrowned King of Scotland
@JDługosz I don't know who your chosen word authority is, but the New Oxford American Dictionary says: "The merging of all and right to form the one-word spelling alright is first recorded toward the end of the 19th century (unlike other similar merged spellings such as altogether and already, which date from much earlier)..."
"... There is no logical reason for insisting that all right be two words when other single-word forms such as altogether have long been accepted. Nevertheless, although found widely, alright remains nonstandard."
@NexTerren According to research, usage of alright is on the rise, and will probably be accepted sooner rather than later. It does have a different meaning than all right, which is a good first step
So speaking of politics, hows that coming?
18:29
@AndyD273 this web-series author used the nonstandard spelling for all uses without distinguishing meaning or use (e.g. in the manner of already vs all ready). I might suppose that this lack of distinction by users is one thing holding back acceptance.
it really bothers me when I want to say "some time" and software wants to change it to "sometime"
it seems like such distinctions are not often appreciated
@JDługosz Yeah, there is something wrong with that.
19:01
worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/82349/… you do know that vibrate at light speed makes me think of en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarella_(film) … right?
Ah, they made that a decade too early. Imagine what it could have been in the era of soft porn cable TV standards.
I wasn't much a fan of Barbarella. You see everything you need to see in like the first 15 minutes, the rest is just weird
I wonder if, continuing on the same theme, you could find other sentenses from questions, that, strung together, sounds like something from that movie.
19:18
that definitely seems possible, but in defense of maturity I will abstain
19:33
@JDługosz So everyone else is pointing out that you can't do it. I want to give an alternative answer that will solve the underlying problem of what they are trying to do... but doesn't involve they way they want to do it. Is that wrong?
Is your solution connected to theirs?
@Bellerophon Not really. The other answers basically say "no, you can't do that, it would be impossible/kill the occupant, etc." Which I believe is correct. My answer says "Like everyone else is saying, you can't do it that way. Here is a way to get the same effect and not break physics, but the whole premise is flawed for these reasons. Here is a way to fix that flaw, but it would be the opposite of what you want to do."
It really should be a comment, but it's too long...
Oh heck, I'll just turn it into two comments
19:52
I personally wouldn't but I suspect most people wouldn't mind.
@Bellerophon Typo, or am I being brain dead reading that?
20:14
@NexTerren my guess: you are being brain dead
aww, I just realized, some day I want to be a newswriter when Will Smith is found guilty of a crime
for a reason that I just realized was an absolutely terrible joke
@DaaaahWhoosh But it reads "I wouldn't but most people people wouldn't"
Like, I'm willing to accept that I'm confused but... man, I'm confused.
as in "I would not do that, but if you did that, most would not mind"
yeah, it's a strange construction
Okay, that makes more sense. I understood it as "I wouldn't [mind], but most people wouldn't mind."
20:22
that's why you shouldn't insert words into other people's sentences
except for adjectives. Adjectives are usually safe
20:51
@NexTerren I will aim for clearer sentences in future.
21:12
@sphennings do you think it's worth to go the extra mile of compiling a list of where and how to find the most common of these metals?
21:30
yuck only one more vote for that silly badge
21:47
@dot_Sp0T Probably not. Seems like the Asker just wants cool flames.
That infographic you dug up is pretty cool.
@sphennings thought so as well, amazing chemistry site it comes from. Will probably dig into it over the next few days when I got time to read up on chem :D
22:22
@MonicaCellio thanks
23:05
@AndyD273 maybe. Is it an answer to a different question like “How can you practically slow time for a human being?” then why not just post the new question and answer it?
@dot_Sp0T what badge?
