@JourneymanGeek yeah -- it's definitely not for the particularly prudish.

Cause really the 'reasons' behind rape arn't just about sex
there's a lot of issues with society which wouldn't change
Now, if it caused you to die painfully screaming in pain...

@JourneymanGeek indeed -- it's about violence and control -- and those are parts of the things I'm wondering about

But that's entirely societal
You can have violence and control without the sex aspect

@JourneymanGeek yeah -- I'm kind of wondering if there's some reason why that is used as a means of control/violence (and what different things would be adopted in its absence, etal)

eh. Vaguely reminds me of the judiciary series.
Well 'gender' 'politics' I guess

12:08 AM
I'm not inclined to think that it'd be a great question for wb.se.
Even setting aside the chances that it would spiral out of control in terms of the maturity and dignity of the conversation, overall wb.se doesn't specialise in social questions and tends to treat them as reducible to more abstract sciences.

Consider China Mieville's Perdido Street Station - and Yagharek. His crime was not just rape, but also denial of someone's right to choose
also, in an ideal world this sorta shit wouldn't happen

@JourneymanGeek I agree wholeheartedly

And yeah, it would be a terrible question

So I type out tenticles, which isn't spelled right. I right click to bring up spell check, and the only option is testicles. Tentacles isn't even listed. Spell check is failing me here.

5:17 PM
spell check knows what you really want
or, more likely, people don't talk about tentacles as much
either way, I don't use spell check any more
the way I see it, to use technology I have to be sufficiently incapable or the technology has to be sufficiently capable
with things like spell check, or aim assist in video games, or that setting on my car that turns the AC on when I turn the temperature dial all the way to the left, I'd rather just do it myself

5:55 PM
If I see a misspelled word I'll usually try to correct it myself, but sometimes I just blank out on what's wrong. It's more of a supplement than a crutch. (he says as he can't figure out how to spell supplement)

yeah, but that's why I prefer Google's corrections. You have to choose to use them. The ones they have on phones are taking it too far

Good evening good people of Worldbuildingstan

Afternoon to you
Well, afternoon to me, evening to you I guess...

You have to make a decision there

Guten Abend
:-)

@dot_Sp0T Fact check: mostly false. The time of day is not determined by my opinion.
I do not believe in alternative facts
I do however really enjoy questions that let me give speculative answers... I may have a problem here.
But not with time!
Unless it's a time travel question.

I like answering time travel questions, but I don't think there usually is a good answer

7:22 PM
Ì enjoy having a nice cup of tea and a warm meal; I had one of both this evening, so I am mostly relaxed
@DaaaahWhoosh there will have been a good answer

I would have been writing one if I get the chance

Now keep me entertained for some 30 more minutes before I leave for bed

@DaaaahWhoosh Hmm, I give that attempt a 6.5. Not past future present enough.

@DaaaahWhoosh We're all time traveling right now... Just forward and at 1sec/sec
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@Fabby I bet I get to the future before you do

7:26 PM
@Fabby tagchen

@DaaaahWhoosh Nope... I live in your future! 20:26 right now! ;)

@DaaaahWhoosh aren't you good at drawing?

@dot_Sp0T maybe, but I'm really good at having a low opinion of myself

@DaaaahWhoosh that's great :) Would you be up for a small quick sketch?

@DaaaahWhoosh And that for a UI developer???
UI development is one of the lost arts...
>:-)
Feel better already? ;-)

7:28 PM
@dot_Sp0T what, like a comedy sketch?

@DaaaahWhoosh no like a quick and dirty drawing...
@Fabby please refrain from making your smileys bold, it irks me to the extent that I cannot guarantee further pleasant conduct

Why does it irk you so? :O

Huh, you know how time flies when you're having fun, and drags when you're watching the clock? I just figured it out. It's all about tics. When you're busy/having fun you're internal clock gets fewer resources and is only able to refresh every few seconds. It's like stop motion, and time seems to speed by. But when you're bored and watching the clock then it refreshes multiple times a second, and so every second feels like it's taking much longer.

@DaaaahWhoosh here you go merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sketch

@AndyD273 Starred!

7:30 PM
@Fabby I cannot say yet, I just know that I felt anger when I saw them

@dot_Sp0T I know, I was trying to imitate comedy sketches where one character misinterprets things

@DaaaahWhoosh you must be fun at parties

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@dot_Sp0T oh yes, definitely so. It's great watching me run away in terror

I think that kind of humor works better live

7:31 PM
@Fabby I didn't mean to hurt you or push you away; I just believe in saying out loud if something bothers me
@DaaaahWhoosh so, back to my question, would you do me the favour? :)

@dot_Sp0T depends. What are you hoping for a sketch of?

@dot_Sp0T There are three definitions on that link...

@AndyD273 take the first and bugger off

I'm completely unsure how to respond to that...

@DaaaahWhoosh I want to make a question about a city of my world, the question itself is about finding a sensical reason that they've built a huge circular wall around the city. Now the city itself is located rather peculiarly and I was wondering if my description make people understand it or if I need to supply a drawing of the location - So if I'd describe the location and situation to you and you could show me how you understand my description it would help me immensely in more than one way
@AndyD273 usually you start by smashing a bottle or something similar; then we have a barfight
@AndyD273 also sorry, it sounded funnier when I played it out in my head

7:36 PM
@dot_Sp0T makes sense, I'd be glad to give it a shot, no promises how it'd turn out though

@DaaaahWhoosh you're amazing
@AndyD273 you're amazing as well, I am deeply sorry for my rude comment before..
@DaaaahWhoosh you would, by chance, have time for the experiment now..?

@dot_Sp0T kind of?

@dot_Sp0T It's ok, was just a bit... abrupt.

@DaaaahWhoosh splendid
So, the city does only have a WIP name which is ring-city (or Ringstadt in German). It is located at the base of a rather steep mountain-range next to a small freshwater lake that is fed by a river and has another river, almost at the other end, flowing out again.
The city was initially founded as a mining town as the rock and ground near and around it is comparatively rich in iron and some other ores.

where does the river come from/go?

7:44 PM
After quite successful initial mining efforts the, so far, small town gets expanded with smelting industry to process the ores on-place. In time more and more ore & coal, etc. gets shipped to the city and the smelting industry is expanded into metal-working industry as well as tool- & machineproduction.
@DaaaahWhoosh I have not really decided on that, the lake was initially there due to aestethic reasons; I then wanted to make it more useful than simply serving as a basin of cooling water for the industries of the city, so adding a harbour and lots of shipping bringing/taking ores/metals seemed to make sense (so placement of rivers are completely arbitary)
Thus a town-to-become-city is starting to grow between lake and mountain and is also starting to expand towards the flatter areas to provide housing and farming.

in terms of angles, where are the mountains and the lake in relation to the city? And/or where is the expansion heading?

Now at some point in time (or over time with multiple steps and expansions) a circular wall is build mostly around the city. The wall would start more or less adjacent to the mountain range at the very outer far end of the city and circle, mostly through then empty(?) areas, until it ends adjacent to the lake (later in time it will be built through the lake towards the other shore adjacent to the mountain(s) again in order to provide a way to guard the harbour)
@DaaaahWhoosh I placed the lake at the relative left (in the image in my head) of the city, the mountain-/cliff-side would then be further up stretching to the right (and away)
The wall will eventually reach rather tremendous measures of quite a few stories tall and almost as wide as a small house. On top of it a channel is built to transport additional water from the northern mountains along it (the water eventually flows into the harbor lake). The water on the wall will be channeled into the city as well as the outskirts using aquaeducts in order to supply the city with fresh water (much of it goes towards more and more industries that have a need for lots of water)
The wall itself would have a rather huge diameter. I initially thought about something along the lines of a kilometer or even a mile in radius (making the diameter the double of that) but I have no idea about sizes that grand in perspective to the materials, etc. needed to make it :(

hmm, does the river leading to the lake come from the mountain? As in, would it be close enough to the city to affect the wall on that side?

The wall would also, logically, have gates at regular intervals (as well as lots of room inside for storage and smaller workshops, some living, etc.). There would be a number of 5 main-streets (large for lots of traffic) connecting the gates to the center of the wall-circle like the spokes of a wheel, the fifth road leading towards the main mining area in the mountains - the others in regular intervals to other areas such as the harbor.
@DaaaahWhoosh No, the river leading to the lake would be further upper left
(brb, nosebleed)
(back)

8:06 PM
@dot_Sp0T No worries, I need to work the Ask Ubuntu Review queue

@Fabby bold smileys and using Ubuntu..

Privately: yes.
Professionally: No...
;)

@dot_Sp0T does the wall go all the way around the city, or does it have 'holes' where it rubs up against the cliff and the lake?

@DaaaahWhoosh one end ends adjacent to the cliff/mountain (where it takes on water from a lake/source further up/in the mountains - the other end originally ends in the lake but eventually is built with parts in the end, having it end up in the mountain again

8:17 PM
so mountain---lake---mountain, and eventually mountain---l-a-k-e---mountain ?

It is amazing how much blood a human being can lose

yeah, I used to enjoy nosebleeds. As long as I wasn't in the middle of looking in someone else's textbook

more like: mountain(right)==============================lake(left-ish) and eventually: mountain(right)==============================l=a=k=e===mountain(left-up-ish)
@DaaaahWhoosh the issue is that it starts out of nowhere lately. I suddenly start dripping large drops of blood onto the floor

ah, so there's no wall on the top until they cover the lake.
can you provide actual angle estimates, like degrees for each section?

@DaaaahWhoosh yes; based on the fact that I could not imagine any reason for there to be a defensive wall at that point in time/development
@DaaaahWhoosh make it a perfect circle with the center about 2 thirds of the radius off the original town (aka 2 thirds from the harbor & 2 thirds from the mines)

8:22 PM
I used to have a lot more nosebleeds. I still carry around an emergency tissue in my wallet, but I haven't needed it for over a year.

@DaaaahWhoosh I carry something called DermaPlast in my pocket at all time. Another box/glass of it in that purse-thingy where I put all my pens, pencils, etc. Another one of them in each rucksack I own

@dot_Sp0T I have no idea how to interpret that statement
I tried, and failed.

Do you think it is a sign to stop using Microsoft Edge (the web-browser coming with Win10) when I can't even open the task-manager during one of the lags/spasms of the browser?

it's probably a sign to stop using Microsoft Edge when the word 'Microsoft' is in the title

@dot_Sp0T So the wall is a lot bigger than the town?

8:30 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh mathematically: if you put the harbor (where town meets lake) at point X and put the mines (where they dig into mountain walls to extract ore and stone) at point Y. You can then draw a circle with a radius of 0.7 units at origin X and another at origin Y. You will get two points where these circles intersect each other. At the intersection further south you will make a point, that is then called Z. Then you draw another circle with a radius of 1.0 units at origin Z
This last circle will be the wall

ah. huh

@AndyD273 indeed, it's much larger than the town at this time, but then industries and housing will grow along it due to the access to fresh water (at least so my hopes)
@DaaaahWhoosh if you don't get what I mean it basically tells me that I am too complicated with my descriptions and definitely need to produce a drawing of it :)

I get what you are saying. I wish I had a compass...

@AndyD273 a compass offers absolute directions, but I have not ever decided what way the town is facing :) So if you want directions: taking the lake as perfect west: Mountain-/cliffside from north-west to west, mines mostly perfect north, harbor mostly perfect west

@dot_Sp0T no, I think I get it. Sort of. I was thinking the walls should be built into the mountain, rather than being tangent to it

8:34 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh make the mountain wider, it would rather be a sort of wall than a single point

Afternoon, troublemakers.

@dot_Sp0T I mean a drafting compass

...And why am I seeing dot_Sp0T's avatar jump between two versions?

@NexTerren because it seems that you have two caches of different stackexchange chat servers

8:35 PM
@dot_Sp0T But how does that work? Shouldn't it just reserve one cache as the authoritative one? Or at least indexed before the other?

@NexTerren I don't really know; I've encountered the issue with my avatar as well as the one of bilbo some months back;; It's also just a guess of mine that it's to do with caches, assuming the chat server you use jumps between two different servers that use sufficiently distinct caches in the background to deliver the image

Curious. Most curious.

I may shortly be uploading an unfortunately large image

Also, based on this question: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/69615/… - does anybody know if there are distinct chemical compounds, biologic agents, similar things in human blood that are not found anywhere else?
@DaaaahWhoosh I am anxiously looking towards that moment

@dot_Sp0T Cooties.
Or are those limited to just a single biological sex? My grade-school education fails me.

8:39 PM
@NexTerren are they in the blood..?

@dot_Sp0T They're everywhere. Cootie shots are absolutely essential.

so... initial sketch, how far off am I?

@dot_Sp0T Human white blood cells? That is what contains human DNA. The rest of the blood is pretty generic, and can even be transfused across species
Xenotransfusion (from Greek xenos- strange or foreign), a form of xenotransplantation, was initially defined as the transfer of blood from one species into the veins of another. In most cases, it is a transfer of blood between a non-human animal and a human. However, further experimentation has been done between various non-human animal species. This procedure can be performed without affecting the health of the donor, as only about 10% of their blood volume is used each time. Utilizing the unlimited blood supply from animal sources eliminates the risk of transmitting infectious diseases between...

@DaaaahWhoosh you're pretty much on target; I personally made the part of the lake that is in the city limits (thus the harbor area) a sort of extension*(? ; Ausläufer in German) of the main body of water, and curved the *MOUNT'N the other way around so the area between lake * mountain would be a tad smaller - otherwise pretty much the situation :D
@AndyD273 Neat, so I'll add an answer to the vampire question based on that if you don't mind

@dot_Sp0T That's fine. My big hangup with that question is what allows the blood oranges to work...
By hangup I mean I haven't thought of an answer that I like enough to type up
I may still use that in my answer, as I'm slowing working one up in my head

8:51 PM
@AndyD273 we call that Zirkel in German :D

Which sounds amazingly like someone saying circle in a fake German accent. I approve of that.

Are you sure the white blood cells are so elaborate?
I did not find anything saying they carry DNA (that sounds wrong somehow)

http://www.biology.arizona.edu/human_Bio/problem_sets/DNA_forensics_2/06t.html
"Blood is an excellent source of human DNA. DNA is present in white blood cells of humans, but not red blood cells which lack nuclei. A dime-sized spot of blood, approximately 50 µl in volume, is enough DNA for a typical VNTR analysis."

There you go, I've added, as far as I see it, the only answer not resorting to some magical component or behaviour of human blood (besides the blood-type answers)
@DaaaahWhoosh thank you for partaking in this experiment with me
And now I'm off for the night o/

wait, but I have a version 2 of the sketch!
I also want to draw a side view now
eh, but it's still work hours, I should get back to the things I am paid for

9:08 PM
@dot_Sp0T I think I finally came up with an answer that I like. Since it's based on the same seed it might have some similarities to your answer, and so I hesitate to post it...
I will endeavor to think more outside the box.

9:39 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh awesome and simple, i dnvy your security with a biro
@AndyD273 well I needed your input for the white blood cells, so yeah :/
Still I wonder what good reason there could be for an actual wall. Especially in that form

@dot_Sp0T To support something round, like a dome, or where a dome used to be

@AndyD273 hoe would you build such a huge dome in a pre-computer time?
Even pre-electricity

Ah, I didn't see a time frame.

walls are great, they keep things out
and other things in

@AndyD273 forgot about it..
The time-frame for the wall would be between when people started mining for iron and other tgings and a good chunk of time before the industrial revolution. Optimally the wall would be some three to four generations old at least i guess
But idk

9:46 PM
In that case, because it's perfectly round. There's a story about one of the renaissance masters that was asked to show some great feat of skill, and so he drew a perfect circle by hand. A perfect wall that is perfectly round is really impressive, especially at that time.

that's an interesting idea, a piece of art that acts as its own security system

Might be as good an idea as any

Even today we look at the walls that the Aztecs built and say "wow, the way they took those huge blocks and fit them together so precisely with primitive equipment is amazing."

Well yeah
When the setting still was high fantasy i had the wall be some remaining old dwarven structure, originally used to make salt

Enemies coming to scout the city in disguise see this perfect wall that is perfectly round, each block cut with such precision, and it would be very intimidating.

9:53 PM
It woulda been filled with saltwater from a channel or river from the northern sea and then closed off and evaporated until you could start gathering the salt

It still could be. The dwarves would want that kind of craftsmanship. it would be like a masterwork.

But there's no dwarves anymore

Also, historically, salt is hugely valuable. Back in the time of the Romans salt was used as a currency
The phrase "worth his salt" is because of that
also the word salary comes from the use of paying soldiers in salt

Still same issue

Just pointing out that there are multiple reasons to show that this is a well defended place...

9:55 PM
it seems like a bad idea to use currency that's not waterproof

I guess I'll take some time during courses tomorrow to create a proper sketch and description of what I want to have as a result and then write up a question about finding a reason/way to get there
Making it a huge city wall makes some sense, but I am unsure if I can bring big enough conflict to that time
There's no real borders in the area where the city exists, and theres large presences of mercenaries working for guilds, so no organized huge banditry like mongols in china

@dot_Sp0T It could also have been a fallback stronghold, sorta like Helmsdeep.

@dot_Sp0T it coulda started as a defense, then just got expanded over time because it looked good
maybe the city is renowned for its masonry, so it's like a resume for all the masons

@DaaaahWhoosh thought of that, start as defense, make bigger, add water to supply city growing inside and around - issue: Why a circular palisade/smaller wall 'protecting' such a huge empty area
If area not empty then unlikely to fit circle

@DaaaahWhoosh it's because it was hard to get, especially pure. We take it for granted because we have mines that go thousands of feet down and refineries to make it pure and white, but back then they had none of that. And salt is essential for life, so if you didn't get enough of it you could have health problems.

9:59 PM
ah, so it's just generally too big for the city

@DaaaahWhoosh could work. Planned to make city renowned for it's metal workers and eventually machine industry

@dot_Sp0T Far sighted king who expects the city to grow? Or they wanted to have defended fields inside of the walls

@DaaaahWhoosh well the issue is more that it's to perfect to be built after a city grew
@AndyD273 no gods. No kings. Only man.

@dot_Sp0T Mayor then

Wait, I think I just quoted bioshock

10:02 PM
You did. I assumed it was on purpose

Farsightedness seems sorta cheating in my book, bit is a reason nonetheless.
@AndyD273 it was on purpose. I want stars..
Well I really oughta sleep now. Thank you all very much for helping me out :)

If you had someone with a very organized mind that saw how other cities just started sprawling without planning, then a little farsightedness isn't that hard to imagine.
@dot_Sp0T Night
Look at the horror that is Boston's street layout and weep...
I gotta go too. Night! o/

@AndyD273 have you ever visited any European city ?

10:55 PM
@dot_Sp0T it's probably too late for me to say, I have no idea what you were saying back there
