Q: Why does flagging as "too broad" also count as "duplicate"?

user45623I flagged a question as "too broad". Then I realized the author had previously posted the same question and decided to change my flag to "duplicate". I retracted the "broad" flag, but the user interface now won't let me flag as "duplicate" because it seems to think I already flagged as "duplicate...

Q: If you're gonna talk Politics, you must respect those who disagree

Shog9This is sort of a follow-up to two past discussions: Toward a philosophy of Chat Does the Be Nice policy require SE users to "be nice" to people who are not SE users (e.g. public figures)? Over the past year, there's been an uptick in discussions of politics in chat. JUST LOOK AT THIS CHART! ...

hm. Bleh. I think their hearts are mostly in the right place
ah, that was flagged. Bleh, at some point I need to talk to the mods here and try to work out how things are typically handled here.

By "here" do you mean in chat?

@BESW this specific chat

When something's flagged in chat, everybody who's in any Stack chat at the time and has cumulatively 10k or more reputation across the Stack Exchange network gets to review it.

On root access, we typically just let someone know they've crossed the line
In a situation like this, they sometimes get a polite yelling, and it works well enough.
Oh, I do know how chat flags work 'mechanically'

7:59 AM
I flagged it because warnings haven't worked in the past, with that particular user.

See, that's the kinda context I lack for now.
(and no, I'm not going to tell you how to be a RO or anything)

In any chat I frequent, room owner or not, I'm going to point out blatant name-calling or other clear violation of the basic be nice policies.

Actually, kinda debating making that bit of conversation going away.
eh. I think you misunderstand my intent here ;p

After two or three repeats I'll start flagging.
@JourneymanGeek Possibly!

There we are!

8:03 AM
Thank you.

So, non local mod etiquette for me - I don't typically tromp in, and tell people, especially ROs and local mods how to run the site.
I was a little slow on the flag, but I was debating the entirety of it (and made a decision)
Also I don't know you guys
Which makes it a little hard to tailor soft-moderation approaches for now

As RO I'm totally cool with the purge, but I know some folks here aren't entirely sanguine about the edge cases of room culture being overridden by Be Nice.

Yeah, that was what I was worried about ;p

My understanding of the network stance on things is that your purge was quite righteous and by rights I probably should have been willing to do it too.

Erm... I know I'm relatively new here... What does RO mean?

8:08 AM
room owner

"Room Owner."

Its a sign that a user is trusted, or spends too much time in a chat room.

Obviously my brain isn't working at this time of the morning... Thanks

Means my name's italicised, I can move messages, issue time-outs, change the title/subtitle/tags, mess with stars.

They have somewhat limited moderation powers over the place
I'm a moderator, though from another site

8:09 AM
Blues (elected moderators) get all RO privileges on all chat rooms across the networks, plus some extra goodies.

Which means, I have vaguely deitylike powers, but I try my very best to use them appropriately.
lol
I was pushing for RO's being able to kick for ages

Yeah... I've came across this before. I just didn't realise that that's what RO meant... I feel like a bit of an idiot...

Royal Robot Overlord?

@Mithrandir24601 eh, its kinda cause we're lazy SE chat slang
I use the term a lot cause I rely on the RO's in my home site's main room to keep drama from blowing up when I sleep ;p

OK. Sounds fun :P

8:12 AM
@JourneymanGeek I'm very happy to fill that role on my home site, and the chat there is delightful.

@BESW more importantly, folk know what's what.

My ROness on worldbuilding is more of a quirk of the beta; I can't really do much with the mainsite since its topicality turned away from my interests.

Last incident like that we had.... got handled in about 30 seconds, then someone flagged it an hour later ._.
lol

But sometimes I regale people here with tales of epistemology and cultural contact zones.

I got ROness on root access quite literally cause I was on it all day ;)

8:15 AM
Was?

Fair enough :P

Basically if a room owner is inactive, the system promotes whoever seems to be online the most.

@BESW And book recommendations. They're always good
Online the most? Or talks the most?

Probably both

8:17 AM
Seems reasonable I suppose

Sep 24 '14 at 16:00, by Feeds
BESW has been automatically appointed as owner of this room. (What does this mean?)
There's a handy explanatory link when it happens!
And, you know, it's a link to the chat FAQ.

I think mine was 5-6 years ago ;p

Yep - I like the "otherwise, they may soon be auto-appointed again"

Stack documentation may be fragmented, but it's surprisingly thorough for most things.

8:23 AM
So that's what the speaker's for...
(The one in the top corner)

Now that my unjust ban is over, May I ask when the hell talking it out didn't work for me?

@TrEs-2b It did feel like a bit of a rant that came out of nowhere

So I need context for every post or else it gets not only censored, but I get banned from defending myself?

Well, that specific flag was handled the normal way
so at least two or three people decided it was valid

How so? I get banning the insult, but the rest was a coherent critique of that appalling woman's behavior

8:28 AM
yeah, and a rant about SJWs
And well, as things were, there was nothing constructive I saw there

When somebody wades in to take out the name-calling, whatever's around it tends to get cut out also.

We always talk about SJW's I wouldn't say 5 messages (1 of which being a photo) counts as a rant

And you've had the Be Nice policy mentioned to you at least twice in this room, this month.

@BESW don't act like some third party took out the rest, Journeyman took it out and you said thanks

Ok, so, as a chat mod - the question I ask myself is "is this constructive?". "Does this serve the ongoing conversation?"
@TrEs-2b yeah, I deleted it

8:30 AM
@TrEs-2b I'm not acting like a third party removed it. I'm saying that's typically what happens whenever such things are responded to.

So, the conversation was getting ranty, and someone flagged and someone else accepted it. I looked through the conversation, as someone who's vaguely a chat regular, took care of it in the manner I saw fit, and dropped a line to one of your moderators.

@BESW, those two times were by you. In the years that the Be nice policy has been in effect, only you say I violate it

@TrEs-2b well, that really wasn't nice.
And let me be direct here, @BESW gets on my nerves sometimes, but this is one situation where I completely agree with them.

@TrEs-2b Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the way flagging works. If a flagged thing gets removed, that means more than the flagger felt it was over the line.

@TrEs-2b, you're suspended for the night because I'm trying to sleep and you thought it was a good idea to take this stupid argument to the comment thread on meta.

8:33 AM
I'd probably have spent maybe 2-3 more sentances, then went the hell with it.

For the record: multiple flags on your messages.

I suspect I'm just the one nice enough to mention it to you and try to explain what's going on.
(And appeals to room culture for overriding network policies are tenuous at best.)

Q: Something must be done about the Factory Floor

TrEs-2bI hate to say this, both because I am the underdog here and because there is no clear right side. But I feel that something must be done about the New Room Owner; BESW. As regulars to the chat may know, we do not always talk about worldbuilding, We often also talk about current events and polit...

Holy sh** what did I miss when having sweet dreams?

9:42 AM
Pretty much what he describes, plus or minus some understanding of what various chat mechanics were used and by whom, and some misunderstanding of intent.
I got unduly snippy toward the end for sure, and if moderators or CMs find my actions untoward I'll take whatever lumps are due.

9:58 AM
@BESW I'm a bit lazy, could you link me that post on opposing points of view again?
nvm, found it

Well, I've taken the time to drop my load on conversational theory on the subject; feel free to read it and learn about yourselves

10:26 AM
Thank you. I might write something up later. There's definitely places where I could've spoken more kindly, and I own up to that.
Not sure what to do about being accused of things I'm demonstrably incapable of doing.

@BESW sometimes the best thing to do is not to engage
Which is advice I totally did not take.
That said, my answer basically covers most of what happened, and while there's every chance a CM will ask me what the hell happened, should clear the air as far as possible

Mmm. If the chat doesn't want me as room owner, that's totally cool. But I did nothing that was beyond the power of any user with 20+ rep cumulative across the network, so I'm not sure it would address any of the current grievances.

did you actually use any RO powers?
also erf preferred pronoun?
I went with them, but its confusing in this context.

I'm content with being identified as male, thanks for asking.
@JourneymanGeek The only mechanical action I took was flagging the first line which called someone an epithet.

ah ok
yup

10:37 AM
@BESW that sounds intriguing, do you mind elaborating?

Q: Of Questions & Titles

dot_Sp0TLooking at a recent, well I didn't ask much lately.., question of mine on butchering dragons, I see again that people often do not even want to read the actual question but just want to react to the first few words without using their brains or anything else.. The original title of that question...

Pretty much all I've ever done here as RO is fiddle with the room tags and occasionally manage stars.
@dot_Sp0T It's an elaborate way of saying I was assigned male at birth, am okay with it, and I'm cool with people using pronouns to indicate as much.

About the only elaboration that might be possible is that I'm sometimes mistaken for female (though less and less as I get older) and it doesn't bother me except that then I have to figure out how to tell the person without making them feel bad.

(I don't actually care that much for political correctness for its own sake, but its just simpler to ask that way)
Well, its a bit more complicated than that, but good enough ;p

10:44 AM
raises eyebrows I thought TFF was meant to be a peaceful room

Not everybody is in agreement that name-calling is non-peaceful.

Holy guaccamole!
HELLO ART, HOW ART YOU?!

@ArtOfCode >_>

Also hi.

Apparently my mere presence does not make it so :(

10:46 AM
o/ :)

Nah, that's a disagreement which has been rumbling for a while now.

@JourneymanGeek do I need to raise eyebrows more or something

I thought that was a funny hat.

@BESW yeah, I've just about caught up on context there. For the record, we know you're not at fault here.

@ArtOfCode That's vaguely what I was saying too ;p

10:49 AM
I was feeling grumpy about the prospects of the lit.se beta as a site for experts, so when I saw some name-calling from somebody who's been reminded repeatedly of be-nice and the various metas about politics and respect, I escalated straight to a flag and then got a little mouthy. mea culpa for my part in it.
I'll take whatever flogging is deemed appropriate.

gets the wet noodle

@BESW a whole none. You've used the system exactly how it's meant to be used, as far as I can tell :)

@BESW there's been a few incidents with politics - if it had been an unfair flag, I've had had a word with you, and undone it.

Fair enough. I don't think anything's actually been resolved on the issue, though.
If my resigning as RO would relieve tensions in the room, I will, but I don't see it myself.

It wasn't the most offensive thing ever, but it was certainly not constructive and flag worthy.

10:53 AM
I'd've acted in much the same manner tonight regardless.
@ArtOfCode I'm kind of a believer in fixing broken windows.

@BESW no, don't worry about it. This ain't your fault, and as far as I can see there's only one person calling for your retirement.

People are all worked up about politics. Stuff happens. They'll get over it. Or not.

@TimB As you may remember, the chat's had clear discussion of this before

There, answered that meta post. Hopefully that clears things up.

Thank you for your time.

11:04 AM
Indeed. If people want to rant or name call then they can do it elsewhere. Polite discussion - even meaningful debate - are ok, but baseless rhetoric and ad hominem attacks are not. It's a sensitive subject though so tempers are running high.

This thing screams story-based / philosophy.SE: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/69044/… - or is that just me..?

That scifi question of mine we discussed earlier was massively upvoted. At the same time, I am no longer very sure what is real anymore as when I wrote the question, more vivid scenes started to pop up to fill in the details.

It is possible it might be some highly warped residual memory after all from one of the shows I watched back in the 1960-1999s. So far I onyl managed to rule out indiana jones.

I guess I might have to check my collection and see what movies I have watched in the past
Trying to hunt for the show/film/movie memory that a dream based on is highly noisy and frustrating act

lol
@Secret I'm convinced that Tina Turner did a cover of "holding out for a hero". I remember it in detail. I cannot find any proof of it, ever ;p
memory is.. unreliable

There's a bonnie tyler, but not tina turner
But yeah, it is very hard to detect false or distorted memories.

whole experiments have been done on that - the hot air balloon ride one for example

12:35 PM
@Secret yeah, and I remember it being shown before mad max, which has a song called "hero" that's completely different.

o/
How have you been?

Eh. Normal, I guess...whatever that means these days
you?

Probably the same; depends on your interpretation of normal though

holy hell, did something happen in here last night?
I'm reading the transcript backwards, and it seems like I'm getting closer and closer to bad things happening

2:35 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh like in an episode of Columbo :D

potentially, yes. But less entertaining
I like to think of it more as an episode of Battlestar Galactica. You don't know who's a Cylon, but either way, you know it's gonna be depressing

@DaaaahWhoosh or sexy

@dot_Sp0T I assure you that's not the case
cause chat room moderation porn is not a thing. Thank goodness.

@JourneymanGeek - This is the internet, any kind of porn is a kind of porn to at least someone.

2:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek we could make it a thing

hm. Let me think about this....
and on consultation with my image manager....

You know you want it

What I need is warm weather and less rain

@JourneymanGeek I normally star things that make me laugh, but in this case I think context is key. So, lol

@JourneymanGeek I would like to remind you all of rule 34. In this case I suppose that means there are pictures of people doing... stuff while wearing diamond hats.

2:47 PM
I would love 2017 be the year that dogs dominate over cats on the internet (hurries to register grumpydog.com)

@Pᴇᴛᴇ That will never happen

@James oh dear.

@Pᴇᴛᴇ I'm hoping you meant that in a non-sexual way.

@James by the looks of it, just @dot_Sp0T with crudely drawn stick men

@JourneymanGeek ok I don't get it

2:52 PM
Excellent.

Back on topic. I'm currently (and idly) wondering whether adding another DNA base pair to brain cells could increase intelligence.
But, not sharing the same intelligence as Michael Umlauting, I'm afraid to ask...

3:09 PM
I'm no biologist but 1) brain cells don't have special DNA
and how would that work? Intellegence to a huge extent is social and far more complex than a few genes.

yeah, I think an extra base pair might make DNA smaller, but that shouldn't affect intelligence
or... maybe not even smaller, since so much of DNA is junk
I wonder if it'd lead to less chances of mutation

What's stopping brain DNA having enhanced DNA?

@Pᴇᴛᴇ all DNA comes from the same place
it's like, the same for all cells
though I guess it'd be interesting if there were some sort of symbiote, one thing that's the brain and another thing that's the body

Only because all beings come from a single cell that splits ad infinitum. Why couldn't we inject funky DNA into a foetus at the same stage of development as the brain/spinal cord starts develompent?

I guess that's what viruses do, right?

3:16 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh You're a virus.

Sort of, but Viruses are largely independent cells, you wouldn't get them working together to a common purpose (except to breed)

whoa, I just realized, men are like viruses
2

@DaaaahWhoosh interesting interpretation

but think about it, they 'infect' women with their DNA, and then the women produce copies of them.

You've been watching too much tv again

3:23 PM
Yeah and they also have the easy part. The victim has to suffer from the infection

yeah, huh.
anyway, @Pᴇᴛᴇ I guess you could have an organism that has cells with different DNA. But I still don't think it's the best way to get to more intelligence
and I think adding a base pair would impede evolution

"junk" dna is a mis-nomer
most of it is actually fairly important
although it is shocking how much of our DNA is bits of virusses

now that I think about it, how do we know what parts of DNA came from viruses? I assume it's not colored green

we know what the viral dna sequences look like
having...well...sequenced... them

ah, so it could just be a coincidence, then?

3:38 PM
its like you're reading the complete works of shakespear and suddenly find a pulp romance novel inserted in one chapter

well, in that case, how is that not just junk DNA?
oh, wait... the virus DNA can still sometimes produce viruses?
does that mean a virus from millions of years ago could, with the right mutations, rise again to reap the souls of mankind?

theoretically yes... although more realistically it's unlikely at this point
it's not junk DNA from the virus' point of view :D
I seem to remember reading somewhere that some of the viral dna has been co-opted into serving a useful purpose in some places as well

I'm now imagining a short story where the world is infected by a zombie virus, and they have to send someone back in time to gather samples from the first outbreak. They then fend off zombie apes for the remainder of the story.

@DaaaahWhoosh that would likely be called plagiarism

@dot_Sp0T wait, it already exists?

3:53 PM
Planet of the Apes is an American science fiction media franchise consisting of films, books, television series, comics, and other media about a world where humans and intelligent apes clash for control. The series began with French author Pierre Boulle's 1963 novel La Planète des Singes, translated into English as both Planet of the Apes and Monkey Planet. The 1968 film adaptation, Planet of the Apes, was a critical and commercial success, initiating a series of sequels, tie-ins, and derivative works. Arthur P. Jacobs produced the series under APJAC Productions until his death in 1973; since then...

yeah, but that's forward in time. And there are no zombies

@DaaaahWhoosh that's why I linked the reboot

ah. But still, that has super-intelligent apes, and no time travel
I think

And a virus that makes apes hyper int and kills of humans
but nvm go ahead and do it
I will go ahead and make a story where everyone on the planet looks like the 16th president of the United States

Lincoln? The description?

4:00 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh 12 monkeys
well sans the zombie apes

@JourneymanGeek aww, damn. Yeah, that's probably close enough to be annoying.

@DaaaahWhoosh Planet of the Abes

@dot_Sp0T :D

@dot_Sp0T boooooo

maybe I'll make a story about a planet where everyone smokes e-cigarettes

4:04 PM
"Welcome to the town of Marlboro Stranger"

(Planet of the Vapes)

@DaaaahWhoosh (Sorry, that might've been funnier in your head)

then how about a story about a planet ruled by hyperintelligent vine-based fruit?

\

planet of the grapes?

4:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek yeah, and the sequel, the Grapes of Wrath

Most interesting

or the world of VHS....
planet of the tapes...

here we go

I think this joke has gone on too long
we need a Planet of the Escapes

Usually not. Chat tends to survive most main outages.

it does appear that things are working. This message should complete the handshake
I am seeing a weird thing where it shows my message twice for a while

everyone's got it, it's not just you

nope, everything is gone

oh no, my Internet points!
oh, and also the millions of useful answers to a wide variety of interesting questions

6:55 PM
I don't know, repopulating the network doesn't sound nearly as fun as repopulating Earth

1 hour later…
7:59 PM
huh, I think I just volunteered to work 16-hour days for a month.
I sort of knew I was, but I didn't think they'd take me up on it

You couldn't even force me to do something like that, how did they get you to volunteer?

well, someone was going on vacation for a month, and she was approved for it before anyone knew how to fill in the gap
we're both 50/50 on the same two projects, and unfortunately I'm sort of indispensable on both

@DaaaahWhoosh Well, that'll learn you.

yeah, I need to get started training everyone else
I thought it was nice that they couldn't fire me, but it's a double-edged sword

Thor's Well, Oregon is a huge coastal sinkhole. (Photo: Bill Young) https://t.co/Vyb72qxZ63
It looks like Torus--or vice versa, I suppose.

8:21 PM
@BESW I think I misread that title. I envisioned Thor battling a supervillain and winning, but at the cost of the entire state of Oregon

I can get behind that, too.

it is a pretty cool hole.

8:46 PM
huh, I had no idea Journeyman Geek was a mod on Super User. I don't like that feeling I get when I realize someone had more authority than I'd realized
it's like, I want to pretend like I treat everyone the same, then my understanding of who they are shifts, and suddenly I realize all my prejudices are still there

Bloos are people too.

yeah, but then it's doubly wrong. Because I both feel bad for treating them like they weren't a mod, and also feel bad for feeling like them being a mod changes anything
ugh, human interactions are too complex. Where's the chatbots when you need them?

@DaaaahWhoosh Hello. My name is Alice.
I'm looking for a fun time.
Do you want to see hot pictures of me?

affirmative.

Well, if I were a mod, I'd like people to treat me like I wasn't, except when I was explicitly wearing a mod hat. It's pretty obvious when a mod on chat is actually wearing their mod hat as opposed to 'a regular member of chat' hat...

@NexTerren I want to believe that's actually not malware, but I don't know how deep the joke goes

@Mithrandir24601 I beg to differ. MonicaCellio's 24/7 hat is just "obscenely nice and pleasant." Some people don't even realize they're being put in line by her.
4

I also like the fact that there are 3 'o's in google

@DaaaahWhoosh It's a .exe that simulates the average Reddit user by posting overused memes and waxing intellectual about a variety of subjects that they know nothing about.

@NexTerren Brilliant! I sometimes feel like that here though :P

9:03 PM
@Mithrandir24601 B) deal with it.
(sorry, I think I'm too old for that meme, but I've been wanting to try it out)

@DaaaahWhoosh I'm afraid you've lost me there - I think I missed the meme :/
(my brain has decided to go on holiday today)
Hang on - 'deal with it' is a meme??

@Mithrandir24601 yup, often paired with a pair of sunglasses
usually implies some level of extraordinary apathy
for further reference, watch 'Old Cops Discover the Internet' by 5secondfilms

(to be clear, I was actually talking about myself waxing lyrical about something I know nothing about. As in everyday life...) I know the phrase, but a meme?

I just watched the video... 'Random' is a good word, I think

9:17 PM
well, if you're not up on the memes it may not make much sense

I'm definitely not 'up on the memes'. Definitely, definitely not

well, I guess me neither. But I used to be, and that video's at least three years old by now

Ah, OK then. I'll assume that memes are still a thing. Just a thing that I (usually) never talk about...

memes. memes everywhere.
I think I derive pleasure from making references no one will pick up on

My username is actually a reference. It was only actually picked up on for the first time today
Not that part

@NexTerren :D
@Mithrandir24601 so, not the part where you're Gandalf?

Nope! :D
That's just a name :P

is the 24601 a number associated with some sci-fi thing?

It's a number... But it's not sci-fi

@Mithrandir24601 Ah, nice. Do not forget my name!
(waits for crickets)

9:40 PM
@HDE226868 It's in my head now...
I don't mind
To be fair, you've got a good, obscure (I think) name yourself

10:15 PM
@Mithrandir24601 it's totally sci-fi, the guy escapes from prison with super-strength and invents some random new technology
that's like Luke Cage and Spider-man combined

I don't remember him escaping from prison... He served his time, then just... Never really checked back in. Like he should have...

huh, guess you're right. He tried to escape four times, then I guess gave up and decided to wait it out
and then he got superpowers and invented web-shooters

Nah - he doesn't need superpowers. He's too good for that
