Sorry about the messed up moon question; fixed it now

2 hours later…
11:04
can some mode please unhold it again, thanks

2 hours later…

@dot_Sp0T Cast the final reopen vote. Enjoy!
Oh, I did not notice that you wrote a message in the chat. But I voted to reopen it a while ago.
yay, also please just ping me on here if I again manage to mess up a question; I tend to stalk this chat
@dot_Sp0T You're just begging me to hunt through this chat for the last chat message you ended in a question mark.
I'd do it if I wasn't so busy.
AFK
@NexTerren Please don't
You might get a little more traction in that moon question if you could give some kind of reason about why you want to mess with the phases. Apart from disrupting the tides and day/night cycle, I can't see the reasoning.
13:14
@Pete could you do me a favour and give me a few phrases describing my question in your words?
Just here in chat
@dot_Sp0T Well that just makes me want to do it that much more! :D
@NexTerren So it seems that nothing much happened with the podcast?
@Skye Green didn't show, so we had to delay it.
13:30
@NexTerren I shall be waiting
Or on that matter, would anyone of you care to give me a few phrases of you describing my question in your words? It would help me to identify misunderstandings better, now and in the future :)
@dot_Sp0T answer meeeee
@Skye I have done so
@dot_Sp0T I have a feasible answer though it might seem stupid. I believe it to be a stroke of genius if you might clarify my doubts
Indeed I did not think about splitting the moon into multiple moons, but it would be in the constraints of the question
13:40
I'm gonna answer anyway. I'll delete it if you don't think it's within the constraints
i just answered ur other comment
And I am now constantly refreshing the worldbuilding main page to see if there have been more comments of you
I really should learn to type up questions outside of the on-site-editor... I just lost half of an answer.....
@dot_Sp0T tell me if it's fine
@Skye I really like it actually. I was hoping for someone finding a loophole just like that
Now I need to go into orbital mechanics
@dot_Sp0T Please make the question, how would a crescent roll shaped moon orbit the earth. Or something like that XD
I need to wait a little, but will do so as soon as I have finished typing up my answer for this meta subject: meta.worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/3667/…
13:55
Interesting, I would never be able to find the time to type all the details out.
I just lost an hour of work due to some random refresh happening on my browser....
How does you browser even refresh itself. Do your work on a Microsoft words or something that doesn't actually wipe everything out. Stack exchange ask question system conveniently safes down the drafts actually. Should it be implemented for answers as well?
It did safe an older version of the draft and somehow replaced the current version I was working on with the previous safe. Pair that with me not realizing until I scrolled up to backcheck something...
And it's probably some random javascript bit
That's annoying, I once had to rewrite an essay 3 times due to 1)Power shortage 2)Microsoft word screwed me over 3) I deleted my entire essay when I fell asleep
14:11
And after having the bright idea of using HxD to search through the RAM used by Edge I concur that I hate Edge again...
How do questions migrate?
I think it's done by mods on the other SE site
Does it not go through the mods or something before migrating?
yeah, I think all we can do is flag for migration
or maybe VTC for migration, not sure which
I cant even do that
14:14
@dot_Sp0T all you gotta do is believe
I did some major edits on this question. Could somebody give it a look-see and see if they think I captured the author's original intention?

Q: Unification of opposing forces for common goal

James MarshallThe setting is that of Star Wars during the Clone Wars. The question is asking about how to craft a realistic temporary alliance of Separatists and Jedi against a common foe. The context of the situation is this: A Star-Wars Version of Xanna from Code Lyoko that has been trapped for 33,000 yea...

@Skye On the question, what do you mean about "add details?"
I know the Tv show Xanna thing, so I can simplify it into a form of digitized entity that can control electronics.
@Skye Oh! Yes, I think removing it from the context of the second setting would help. I didn't touch that paragraph since I wasn't familiar with the setting.
this would allow people to know what they opposing forces were up against and thus make better answers I guess. Cos that TV animation has some crazy plot.
So that freaking @Green guy...
2
(you knew we'd give you a hard time right?)
14:25
@James don't even get me started on him
@DaaaahWhoosh I know right.
@James I vote we demote him from "Green" to "Pistachio."
3
@NexTerren Bahahaha
Lime green?
more like 'lie Green'
oooooooooh BURN.
14:33
What the..?
Soo...we are going to fill up the start list messing with green right?
:-D
that is the plan... but Green's probably going to mess it up
2
I just inhaled coffee...a$$. But clearly that is also Green's fault.
@NexTerren I'm gonna have to catch some zzzs so check my edit and see if any changes should be made if you want
@Skye I appreciate the help! See you later.
14:41
@James Yeah, it's not surprising.
@Green Morning dude
You know we love you, right?
@Green Speak of the Green. :(
@James Of this, I have no doubt.
I was going to say "speak of the Devil," but I figure Green has him beat.

Please put me out of my misery:

14:42
@NexTerren Damn right I did.
@James Just so you know, I suggested he join us in chat, so we might see him here. :)
@James The freak is that?
@Green New kid. :)
@Green Skye and I edited it. If you want to take a moment to review the original version, let me know if you feel like I changed the author's intent.
@James ooh, I HAVE CLOSEVOTES HERE!
14:45
@JourneymanGeek congratulations?
@James This is either a really simple (how do I unify opposing factions question) or a really badly written fan-fiction question. If you stripped out all the Jedi/Star Wars stuff, it would be much easier to read.
@James I quite literally did not realise that.
@Green It was originally a fanfiction question. <.<
it was originally a SFF question
so it started out really wrong
It shouldn't have been migrated ._.
14:47
I mean it was originally on SFF, but yeah, it originally was "I have this basic idea for a story, this problem, help me write."
@JourneymanGeek Agreed. Now it will die a rapid death here instead of a linger death on SFF.
@DaaaahWhoosh You mean like @Green forgetting about us :'(
@James exactly, only maybe a little less wrong than that
The SFF people don't care much and I really suppose to go to bed
@Green and get kicked back like a football (round thing, not egg shaped thing)
14:47
@JourneymanGeek I think other SEs just don't understand other SEs. Several of us wanted to migrate it to Writers SE, but this question isn't on topic there any more than it is here.
@NexTerren so.. they're the SO of fiction SEs? hides
They've actually gotten somewhat better about that
"SO" means "significant other" in my head.
So I'm drawing a blank...
KNORF
@dot_Sp0T YOU TAKE THAT BACK
So the word conveys the correct meaning, very good
14:50
@dot_Sp0T The heck is this?!
All I can think of right now is Pinky from Pinky and the brain.
@Green it is a word I just invented to convey my frustration without resorting to generally understandable profanity. Or at least that was the intention
Stackoverflow...
yanno, the site that started it all... ;p
jink jank jerk...
15:24
So much time, so little happening

Q: Follow-up questions on question

AnoplexianI keep running into a lot of neat questions that really get me thinking about some of the stories I'm creating and I've run into a bit a conundrum. I don't want to steal credit for those who had the original thought, but there's pieces of others' questions I'd like to expand upon and maybe get an...

16:16
Why do we hate green?
Also how did the podcast go?
@TrEs-2b The answer is the same for both of those questions. It didn't go because of me.
At least the traitor lives up to his sins.
2
Oh tiddles and tea
@Green you're the problem
@TrEs-2b Yes.
Now that explains a lot
16:45
I'm impressed. I'm so famous, I'm in-famous! 7 of the current 9 starred comments are about me.
2
8 of 9!
So you just did this all for attention then. I am going to have to have a talk with your mother.
@Green I've also done a pretty good job of farming stars off insulting you...
@James Please do. Make sure he gets no Internet for a month as punishment.
@NexTerren That would probably just compound our problem...
@James Ehhh, just clone DaaaahWhoosh and don't give him any clocks. We'll get roughly the same effect as inviting Green.
@James Indeed it would.
17:20
@NexTerren you didn't look for that message, did you?
@dot_Sp0T Alas, I resisted!
@NexTerren so far!
17:49
You know, that question could actually be opened again worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/3598/… couldn't it? I mean I sort of fixed it back then..
@dot_Sp0T do you want/need it reopened? I mean, it does look fine now, but it's like two years old
@DaaaahWhoosh let be perfectly straight with you: It bugs me that I have a closed question :D
ah... yes, I know that feeling
I have a few that were closed for the wrong reason, the only reason I haven't tried getting them reopened is that they're still not very good questions
That's pretty much it though
@DaaaahWhoosh we can work on them if you like to
@dot_Sp0T nah, I'll let sleeping dogs lie. I have been thinking about a question I want to ask, though
17:54
My first question was closed for being too broad. Meta posts basically have said that the theme of my question is fair game, so I resent the community for closing it. BUT I got the answer I wanted so I shalln't complain.
RESENT.
But I won't complain. Not at all.
@NexTerren You do that sort of thing a lot.
Got an answer, still alive, did not destroy the Earth or any related planet. It was probably ok.
@Green I resent that remark.
@NexTerren Does that mean it's resentment turtles all the way down?
I think you mean resentment tortoises
17:59
@Green Obviously @DaaaahWhoosh is right. Resentment turtles? What a silly idea.
@DaaaahWhoosh I've heard it both ways. Turtles is easier to type.
@NexTerren Do you resent that silly idea? I wouldn't blame you given your history.
Now I wanna ask questions about turtles
can a turtle evolve a bulletproof shell?
@DaaaahWhoosh Probably.
@DaaaahWhoosh yes, if you shoot at turtles constantly over the course of a few hundred thousand years
Now we need to prolong human life first
18:03
So...is it just me or are the comments on this questions pretty harsh. Its a cool idea.
6
Q: Instant reloading bullets

LedavI have a hero who uses a pair of handguns as weapons. As he progresses along his journey he's obviously going to become better and better with them as well as run into tougher and more numerous villains. The problem will arise as to how to keep him stocked with ammunition in order for him to batt...

teleportation is pretty impossible
and not good for worldbuilding (at least in the way the OP wants it)
He should read more Stephen King
Its a cool game concept though...expand your area of operation after you clear a boss or something to get free ammo. But while in the effort of expanding you have to conserve since you can't yet get your teleport ammo.
@dot_Sp0T Meh, Stephen King should read more Stephen King.
@DaaaahWhoosh I don't wholly disagree with you, the comments just come off as condescending to me.
18:06
@James I understood most of the comments as self-irony
Here's my problem, its an interesting concept brought to us by a new user...who is getting rake over the coals and frankly people aren't really trying to answer his question...rather pointing out what would be better. Which isn't inherently bad but...
answer the freaking question
THEN add on suggestions.
it seems like there's a lot of activity on that question, I don't have time to go through all of it but I'm sure someone, somewhere provided something useful to the OP
We should start to decide ourselves what answers to accept on questions. The OP cannot be trusted!
2
@James I see an accepted answer on that question. Looks like the OP got something that works.
18:26
@James Yes. One of the wisest things said ever in this chat. "How would this work" or worse "how would this be used / what effects world this have" are Never best answered by "here's an alternative clearly outside the scope and intention of your question."
2
18:40
@NexTerren Exactly.
A weird pre-election thought just occurred to me. What are the odds, in the terrifying case of a trump victory, that government agencies and departments would end up with corporate sponsors. Welcome to the Department of Homeland Security brought to you by Wal-Mart
@James I don't think you will manage to put that into a question
Oh lord no, that isn't going on the main site, just a random thought for chat.
@James now you got to type it up!
@James For anyone who has read Snow Crash, that idea looks extremely familiar.
@James I would've thought that corporate sponsors would happen in the event of a Clinton victory
18:54
Its possible with both but seriously look at this:
I totally wanna vote for that trump-guy now
I don't think either canidate is moral, I don't think either canidate is honest with the voters to a degree unmatched for several presidential elections going back, I don't agree with either candidate's policy, I don't think either canidate is a good diplomat, and I think one canidate has proven that they can lead... but I don't know if I want a good leader that I disagree with otherwise or not... so frankly you guys are just depressing me with election talk.
Waves silver statue of the Lincoln Memorial
BEGONE EVIL DISCUSSION!
lol
Lets get back to @Green bashing then I guess.
(Seriously though, not actually trying to stop you guys from talking about politics. But for me this presidential race is all rain clouds and gloom)
@NexTerren You forgot the gale force winds, the tsunami and lightning
18:58
Indeed I did!
@James If you must.
I did hear a thing recently that it's gonna be really bad for Democrats if they don't get another President
something about the Republicans controlling a lot of things
19:21
@NexTerren Brilliant edit sir.
@James ?
Revived a meta-discussion. I am done for today - Farewell worldbuilders
@James Wow! What a great question!
@dot_Sp0T Later!

19:38
Is answering your own question frowned upon? I noted it gives you the option when posting the question, but when you click "answer your question" later it asks if you'd rather post a comment/etc instead.
@rek it's allowed, but somewhat discouraged. Kind of.
rek
rek
More like passiveaggressiveexchange
2
@rek If you feel it's a useful topic that people can hopefully need in the future and feel like you have a very well thought out and useful answer I'd say go for it. If it's just a way to toot your own horn, avoid it. But that's my opinion.
and if you answer your own question, you should wait to accept it, and don't if someone else gives a better answer
@rek I think some people adopt the attitude of "if you already knew the answer, why did you ask it!" but if you think you have something to help people in the future (and, importantly, it's generic enough to apply to different worlds) then I say you're contributing to the collective knowledge.
@DaaaahWhoosh Agreed there.
rek
rek
19:43
I was considering answering it to inspire other answers (and attention).
there's a lot of arguments on a case-by-case basis why self-answering is a bad idea
@rek Actually I considered doing that to two of my questions. Like "here's an example answer, but I know people can do better." Didn't end up doing it, though.
I think example answers could be added to the question, if necessary
rek
rek
@NexTerren If I knew the answer at the time I posted the question, I wouldn't have posted the question. But if an answer occurs to me a week later...
I once answered my own question because I didn't like the current answers. They were right, but they didn't explain it to me in a way I understood. So I did my own research and figured it out. But I don't think I accepted any answer.
I think you in the future is different than you in the past. So that should be fine
though it's possible the original question is just bad if no one else has answered it correctly yet

I've already tried the bounty route. It expires in 4 days. If I'm not satisfied by the responses at that time I'll probably post an answer.
whoa, we have a lot of open bounties
@DaaaahWhoosh Hey, if you want to get 800 rep really quickly. . .
@HDE226868 if I wanted to do that, I'd answer a clickbait question before it makes its way to the HNQ list
bounties are tough
speaking of which, come on @HDE226868, I was just about to read those 33 comments!
(not that they're gone, just that they're slightly more inconvenient to read now)
@DaaaahWhoosh That was basically my response comment to what.
@rek There is nothing stopping you from answering your own questions. And there is nothing inherently wrong with asking a question to which you already have an answer. A couple points (some of which are repeats from what others have said) 1. Don't write your own answer right away, give people a few days to a week to post. 2. Be objective when evaluating your answer against the answer of others.
I have asked several questions with the intent to self answer them later...but then people wrote answers that were frankly better than my own and I didn't write it up.
Also for attention bounties are the best bet (which you already did)
19:57
has anyone been keeping up with that 'anti-terraforming terrorists' question? I have an answer in mind, but don't want to see if it's been done already
@DaaaahWhoosh I was spending all my time planning the podcast that someone didn't show up for GREEN so I am a little behind.
@James I completely understand. You have my condolences.
@James Seconded. I've answered my own questions several times.
@James Oh, by the way, would you find it useful to have a short program (I'm thinking Python or Mathematica) that would implement the algorithm I used for this question to either determine stability or find regions of stability in a graph of two of the input variables (e.g. mass or semi-major axis)?
I've been mulling over that for a while; I thought it might be cool.
Also, what is it with Worldbuilding and atmospheres today? It seems like a popular subject all of a sudden.
@HDE226868 It would be cool for sure, but at this time I have exactly one use case for it...
which isn't to say we couldn't post it on meta under the resources post for other people to utilize
20:08
Do we have a meta question with resources? I may have missed that.
@HDE226868 it was mostly books but yeah. let me find it
rek
rek
@James All good points.
@HDE226868 Actually I was thinking of the recommended reading post but we could just edit the title and make it resources.

Q: Worldbuilding Recommended Reading

DaaaahWhooshMany of us here on Worldbuilding Stack Exchange are building worlds for our own fictional stories, but sometimes the best way to create something is to learn about what has already been created. With that in mind, I propose we create a Worldbuilding Recommended Reading List that can give insight ...

rek
rek
@HDE226868 Planet- and system-generating software leaves much to be desired; not enough of it is top-down (i.e. I know I need features x, y, z, so generate something that produces a planet/system that way). Coupled with a visual output and GUI, I bet there would be a lot (relatively) of interest in a program that tells you if your planetary system is stable and lets you muck around with the values until giving you something that is.
20:36
I still remember the project I wanted to restart for worldbuilding, about terrain generation or something like that. I never even started it.
I wonder what kinds of resources we could put together if we all had more time and motivation
@DaaaahWhoosh Yeah motivation tends to be an issue.
it'd also help if people showed up to things when they were supposed to
I remember that project. Didn't the proposed algorithm use fractals?
one of them probably did
fractals are everywhere, man
