Q: What changes about real-world questions are needed to the help center?

Michael KjörlingA year ago, we had Should the help center be updated to specifically list real world history questions as off topic?, to which nobody ever proposed an answer other than yes, let's list them as specifically off topic. @NexTerren Its the mother of all space based 4x games...like literally it was the first
Master of Orion (MoO or MOO) is a turn-based, 4X science fiction computer strategy game released in 1993 by MicroProse on the MS-DOS and Mac OS operating systems. The game is the first in its franchise, and the rights are now held by Wargaming.net. The player leads one of ten races to dominate the galaxy through a combination of diplomacy and conquest while developing technology, exploring and colonizing star systems. == Gameplay == Master of Orion is a turn-based game. In the first iteration of the franchise, one can only play against the AI (the computer). Human and AI players control t...
Then there was 2
Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares (MOO2) is a 4X turn-based strategy game set in space, designed by Steve Barcia and Ken Burd, and developed by Simtex, who developed its predecessor Master of Orion. The PC version was published by MicroProse in 1996, and the Apple Macintosh version a year later by MacSoft, in partnership with MicroProse. Despite its age, the game has retained a large fan base, and is still played online. Master of Orion II won the Origins Award for Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Computer Game of 1996, and was well received by critics, although reviewers differed about which...
two was a masterpiece
@James What are you still doing here? ;-)
I don't get to sleep early...
:)
although I should call it bed time.
I'd say good morning, but it's all relative :D
to wrap things up 3 was terrible and this is now out
@bilbo_pingouin Yeah. technically yes...morning. Time to sleep.
good night :)
maybe one question if you're still around... is it me, or is the access to review queue buggy?
they tell me that it's their fault, but who knows..

8 hours later…
13:37
@bilbo_pingouin I want to ask 'what do you mean by buggy', but I worry that it's been too long already
14:18
Hey @DaaaahWhoosh. I was playing around with a vector program on my phone, was curious how well it'd work. Made this. It's not great, but I figured I'd show it off...
hmm, apparently can't upload SVG files?
noooooooooo
there's the png
it's kinda sketchy. I'm kinda curious if I could do better in illustrator proper now.
oh yeah, it does look pretty good for a first draft
Morning
I've been misusing illustrator for years, mostly using it as a glorified page layout program. It's interesting actually using it for painting/drawing
14:27
I do want to say that I'd like it to be closer to the color scheme used on the main site
@DaaaahWhoosh Agreed. I love the style and color set for the site.
though I guess I shouldn't be nitpicking, since I have yet to provide a color draft
or anything other than a pencil sketch
That's true
I did try to make something yesterday, but I drew it too big, and got fed up
so I went back to making my gauntlets
oh, but also, @AndyD273, I want to ask you, can you explain to me how to pronounce 'Chandrian'?
Pretty much like it looks actually
hmm
hold on
14:38
for some reason I keep on going back to Chandry-Anne, and that just doesn't seem right, but it does rhyme in the song
Thats pretty close. Check the audio sample from the Audible page, about 43 seconds into the clip: audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/The-Name-of-the-Wind-Audiobook/…
@AndyD273 oh yeah, that is just about what I thought. But it doesn't really rhyme with 'plan'
also, that reader sounds terrible
Maybe if you were singing you'd emphasize the anne part?
yeah I guess so, just as long as you don't normally I'm fine with it
I didn't really mind him. I tend to get lost in the story and the actual narrator doesn't bother me to much. That's probably the only reason I can listen to a story narrated by Scott Brick...
14:56
for some reason whenever someone is reading a story to me, they always seem to sound condescending.
like, I get that they want to add some depth to the narration, but it ends up sounding like they're talking to a child
I think an audiobook would be pretty hard to listen to if they just did a flat read
shudder
You need to variation in the voices to set the characters apart without all the "Tom said" "She said" stuff
So random question, has anyone ever used RPG Maker MV?
A really good narrator can drop those things off and you know who's talking just by the voice they use
@James Not I
nor I
@AndyD273 yeah, I mean I know I'm probably being irrational, it's probably something I just need to get used to, I just don't want to ruin a story in order to acclimate
Well, you could start off on a story that you don't care that much about, and also try to find a narrator that does it really well.
And audiobooks aren't for everyone. My wife can't concentrate on a story if it's read to her, so she won't listen to them.
15:27
the part that confuses me is that I generally like the idea of spoken storytelling
I guess it's almost a separate genre though. Like adapting a book into a movie
so maybe books are too long to be spoken?
I dunno... I like them that way generally, but I grew up with it from a young age. We took long car rides a lot when I was young, and so dad would read a book out loud, or we'd get books on tape, sometimes audio dramas (full cast) and listen to them for hours.
When I read a book with my eyes I generally hear it as voices in my head. When I do an audiobook it's just someone else's voice. Or something like that. It's kind of a crappy explanation
@AndyD273 there is something I've heard, where some people read silently like they're reading alound, and some people can bypass that part
Now I'm paranoid that I'm thinking wrong :/
The voices in your head are a good sign
15:46
I guess the bottom line is immersion. If what you do becomes invisible, then it works
I kinda think it depends on how immerse I get in what I'm reading... Like sometimes It'll be silent in my head reading, and sometimes it goes into full visualization like a movie playing. I'll have to see if I can pay attention without breaking it. Like trying to figure out the position of a photon.
@dot_Sp0T It's rarely quiet in my head, but so far all the voices are just me thinking about what I'm thinking about. Third thoughts as it were.
If I get any strange voices I'll have to reevaluate
I think I have the expected number of voices in my head, my only problem is when they both try to talk at once
you don't really appreciate synonyms until you try to say two words at the same time
16:18
Sausage?
@dot_Sp0T link or patty?
@DaaaahWhoosh Neptune?
@dot_Sp0T god or planet?
@DaaaahWhoosh Carrot!
@dot_Sp0T literally, or figuratively?
16:21
@DaaaahWhoosh prescribed
What in the name of Glarnak is happening right now?
@dot_Sp0T business or pleasure?
@DaaaahWhoosh tarmac
@dot_Sp0T departures, or arrivals?
@DaaaahWhoosh piracy
16:25
@dot_Sp0T the problem, or the solution?
@HDE226868 I believe we're experiencing a random act of synonyms
Or free association
@HDE226868 ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Oh Glarnak, your arm!
@DaaaahWhoosh patina
@dot_Sp0T I admit defeat
16:29
@DaaaahWhoosh you fought bravely
twas not an easy fight
I mean, come on, carrot? Really?
@DaaaahWhoosh at that point I was still trying to swing it towards that college humor sketch
lol oh yeah, I guess that makes sense
But I gave in
they're all topless, reciting the final climactic scene of A Few Good Men
16:33
You can't handle the truth
So I had an idea for a different kind of FTL drive
@AndyD273 instead of a bistro, it's a food truck?
I was watching a physics thing about how the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light, with galaxies speeding away from us faster than their light can reach us so eventually they'll fade away, and I thought it might be interesting to make some kind of pocket universe and ride the wave of expansion until you get to the place you want in this universe... Call it a surf drive or something.
@DaaaahWhoosh and the Hitchhikers reference wasn't wasted.
@AndyD273 Slipstream? Skip Drive?
@dot_Sp0T No, that's a lot closer to folding space
16:42
@AndyD273 so the pocket universe is expanding faster than our own universe, or slower?
This would be more like making a big bang
@AndyD273 yeah no I just got what you meant; write a question about it and earn reputation? :)
Also the idea is interesting
the part I'm confused about is how you actually move. I mean, I think the universe is expanding in all directions, so I can't see how you could actually get closer to anything
It could be the same speed as our universe, but because you're at the edge of the wave you'd be moving faster than light, and faster than most things are moving away from us.
@DaaaahWhoosh The closer something is, the slower it's moving away from us, right?
Pizza!
16:46
So anything in our galaxy is going to be moving away so slowly that it almost doesn't matter. Other nearby galaxies aren't even moving away that slow. Anything with a red shift lower than 1.5
You'd never make to to the edge of our universe, and any galaxy moving away from us faster than the speed of light would be harder to catch up to. But anything near by would be easy.
it's basically throwing stones into a pond and see the leaves move away on the ripples
I mean... maybe... I don't think I fully understand but there does seem to be some validity to the idea, so I'll assume what you're thinking of makes sense
@dot_Sp0T Or dropping an asteroid into the ocean and surfing on the tsunami...
@AndyD273 same difference
The more interesting problem is: How do you harness the 'wave-effect' you created
If I knew that, and how to make a pocket universe, I'd probably get a Nobel prize
Maybe the drive sticks into the pocket universe a little bit, like a surf board into the face of a breaker?
16:52
Also food for thought: Creating such a pocket universe would need tremendous amounts of energy; thus would your new FTL drive be used by single ships, OR is it more likely that there will be installations around the universe which create pocket-verses on a schedule and thus you get sth like those warp thingies from Mass Effect
it'd be interesting if the pocket universe was stationary. You just fly up to it, then sink end on a vector towards where you want to go, and maintain a connection until you get close enough to your destination
if there's nothing there, its space could probably expand indefinitely
The LHC is making energy levels that mimic the early universe. Maybe a particle accelerator in a ring around a gas giant...
aww, I really want to steal this idea now
@AndyD273 It would be quite interesting to adapt this idea and develop a galactic economy around it
@DaaaahWhoosh You can use it. Standing on the shoulders of giants and all that...
@dot_Sp0T Yeah, I just don't know how to turn it into a question.
16:58
@AndyD273 what part of it?
@dot_Sp0T I dunno. You mentioned turning it into a question for the rep.
FYI this is one of those things that's going to involve a lot of handwaving away real physics
@DavidZ NSS?
huh?
Kinda like No kidding, and the last word is Sherlock ;)
Without trying to sound mean
Instead it mostly sounds dumb
17:02
@AndyD273 putting aside the fact that the whole idea is somewhat plausible but so far into the realm of scifi that there's no point in asking a plausability question, we can assume that A) we can create those pocket universes (by means of a particle accelerator around a gas giant for example) and B) we can build things that can ride these waves;
Thus the questions that evolve around it would reach into areas such as: How to build these particle accelerators (materials, gravitational stress, etc)? How would ships be designed around this phenomena (needs more explanation into how the wave is
@dot_Sp0T Yeah. I'd probably have to try to develop it further into a story and see what kind of questions bubble up
@AndyD273 I just have this team of mercenaries designed around Vikings, I wanted them to excel at attacking colonies and they already had a base around a gas giant. If they had a novel form of FTL that'd be an extra layer of cool and even provide a backstory
@DaaaahWhoosh Mandalorians?
@DaaaahWhoosh Only problem is it would kind of be a one way thing, unless they could store the energy to release for a return trip.
@AndyD273 they're not as worried about the return trip, they don't leave much resistance behind
@dot_Sp0T I sure hope not, why, am I that close?
17:05
@AndyD273 But wouldn't the object you're trying to reach be moving away from you, too? Plus, space expansion is only significant on really large scales. And you wouldn't be able to control it well. So what DavidZ said.
@HDE226868 The object would be moving away from you, but slower than the expansion of the universe at the "edge". Things that are close enough to be useful, like stars in our own galaxy, aren't moving away fast enough to make any kind of difference, and even other galaxies aren't going that much. Andromeda is even moving toward us, so that helps.
@AndyD273 Hold on a sec, I might have missed something. Are you trying to reach an object in your own galaxy, or another galaxy?
@HDE226868 Either? Here's my logic. The universe is expanding faster than the speed of light. Things that are further away are moving away faster than things that are closer to us. The closer you get to something, the slower it is moving away from you.
So if you were able to somehow ride the edge of a brand new universe you'd be moving as fast as the edge of our universe. You'd never get to the edge of our universe that way obviously, but anything within our visible universe is possible, especially if it's red shifted less than 1.5
actually, isn't the universe expanding faster now than it used to be?
Ah, so a specific region of space you're on the edge of is expanding, in addition to the normal expansion of the universe?
@DaaaahWhoosh Courtesy of our friend dark energy, yes.
17:16
@HDE226868 in that case, dark energy does not appear to be our friend
@DaaaahWhoosh Fair point.
dark energy is like that bully that keeps things from you by holding them up higher than you can reach
and then kills the universe
Well, I wouldn't go that far.
@HDE226868 Something like that. It would have to be a pocket universe/alternate universe that you somehow were able to harness, since actually expanding a localized region of our space time would be pretty bad.
@HDE226868 people used to think the universe worked in a neverending cycle, now they think it's just gonna go dark forever. Because of stupid dark energy counteracting gravity
17:22
On a side note, if the universe is expanding and everything is moving away from us, how is Andromeda on a collision course with us?
@DaaaahWhoosh Okay, true. Heat death.
@AndyD273 Like I said, dark energy only works its magic on large scales. Galaxy clusters (and superclusters, maybe) aren't really affected. Since Andromeda's in the same cluster as us (the Local Group), and it's the other major galaxy, gravity can easily counteract dark energy.
@DaaaahWhoosh So one theory I read had to do with string theory, that the "big bang" is a result of two branes "colliding" in the multiverse (or whatever the membrane space is called) and creating a new brane that is our universe. Maybe eventually it'll get so bit it just pops...
@HDE226868 That makes sense
Good noon.
@HDE226868 that reminds me, is there a defined 'local group' of stars?
I've been looking for some sort of scientific distinction for stars that are 'close' to us, and haven't found anything
@DaaaahWhoosh No, the Sun is not part of a star cluster.
It likely formed with a group of other stars, but they've since separated.
I did ask about that on Astronomy.
17:36
well, that is interesting. Kinda too bad there's no grouping, though. Makes sci-fi maps difficult
I don't think people seeing the map will care about what stars are gravitationally bound together. Political alliances and imperial sectors - artificial groupings, if you will - make for more plot-relevant details and cooler names. It's a lot cooler to say, "We're now entering Corval Alliance territory" than to say, "We're now entering NGC 2362".
yeah, I guess... but as for where those lines are, and why, that part seems kinda random
but now I'm wondering if it's better to be in a star cluster... are there any nearby?
The Hyades? That's the nearest open cluster, and I doubt there are any globular clusters near us.
Only 153 light-years away.
17:47
I think globular clusters would all be outside the galaxy, so on the order of 10000 light years
@DavidZ Yeah, Wikipedia says that NGC 6397 and M4 are both about 7200 light-years away.
I wonder how far they are above the middle of the galactic plane, and what their closest approaches to us will be.
I don't know about those ones specifically, but I know GCs are generally distributed in a spherical halo with roughly the same radius as the galactic disk
or maybe a bit larger
The closest ones might be outliers though
I'm now imagining a sci-fi map based around the locations of star clusters. That'll give me a macro scale, and I'm fine filling in the gaps at that point
From here:
So it looks like a decent number of the ones we've observed are near the plane of the galaxy (the y-axis is elevation above the plane).
But the orbits are definitely spherical, with most in the halo.
18:39
You guys are really making me want to buy Master of Orion now...
@NexTerren Did you see my response btw?
18:50
Howdy, what are we talking about?
Well it appears I am talking to myself.
or was at least
But I was talking about Masters of Orion
@UncleTres it's a band from the 80's
oh, back when music was good
I am one of those teenagers who know and understand modern teenagers are idiots with bad tastes in music
yeah, I've been listening to synth wave recently, it is a genre I have not paid enough attention to
also, @James ;)
18:56
Hello my hat wearing twin!
@James I did not. Scrolls up
@James I see, I see. How much is it selling for again?
19:14
@NexTerren The new one is like 30 I think
and for 50$ you can get a collection with 1, 2, 3 and the new one
though I would recommend just buying the new one for 30 and #2 for $5.99
or just get #2 for now...I may just do that tonight.
@HDE226868 Hmm, I wonder if The Great GRB Wall has to worry about the forces of dark energy...
Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall or the Great GRB Wall is a massive galactic superstructure in a region of the sky seen in the data set mapping of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that has been found to have an unusually higher concentration of similarly distanced GRBs than the expected average distribution. It was discovered in early November 2013 by a team of American and Hungarian astronomers led by Istvan Horvath, Jon Hakkila and Zsolt Bagoly while analyzing data from the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission, together with other data from ground-based telescopes. At the time of discovery, it was the largest...
Maybe aliens made The Great GRB Wall to keep the forces of dark energy at bay.
19:36
Mr. Dark Energy, tear down this wall!

Interesting; I wonder how long that structure will survive.
It's only made of billions of galaxies... It'll probably still be around when I'm gone
The list of Largest structures in the universe is kind of interesting to read.
This is a list of the largest cosmic structures so far discovered. The unit of measurement used is the light year (distanced traveled by light in one Julian year; approximately 9.46 trillion kilometres). This list includes superclusters, galaxy filaments and large quasar groups (LQG's). The list characterizes each structure based on its longest dimension. Note that this list refers only to coupling of matter with defined limits, and not the coupling of matter in general (as per example the cosmic microwave background, which fills the entire universe). All structures in this list are defined as...
I enjoy that the "Theoretical Maximum Size" is number 7 on the list
19:53
oh boy I missed out on the WW2 quote
@dot_Sp0T Which one?
the starred one
well, post ww2
nonetheless
Very post ww2. That was in 1987
Still it was a direct result of ww2
without ww2 there wouldn't have been a split germany, thus no wall
True
19:58
I think the balloon-whales tag needs an actual question
I made one.
There have been several balloon whale questions if I am not mistaken
We even had it as the topic of the week just so I could make the question.
They voted to remove the tag again afterward
Party poopers
:/
need to read up on them then
there's so much boring stuff that gets lots of views that the interesting stuff drowns...
@dot_Sp0T Its all about perspective
20:02
I still don't understand why we allow questions about what vehicle to use to plough through zombies
It just doesn't strike me as worldbuilding
Idk
@dot_Sp0T Feel free to make a meta post on that.
@dot_Sp0T it's a post-apocalyptic world
we have weapon-design questions
@HDE226868 if I knew how to put it in words that make sense I would
Yeah, people have tried to make certain things off topic but the problem then arises "what about topics x, y and z? If topic a is out of bounds, so are the rest."

Q: Evolution of giant floating mammals

AndyD273Whales are majestic creatures of the sea, as they glide more gracefully through the water than their size should seemingly allow. What kind of evolutionary path would it take for whales to glide gracefully though the skies? Would it be possible on our planet, or would other conditions need to ex...

20:06
Use your down votes as appropriate. But just because something is not interesting to you doesn't mean it is not world building/on topic.
...as we have defined through the course of the site.
Right. And if we only allowed questions that you approved of, the site would be really boring and no one would come back.
Ouch, now you're ganging up
Variety is great, and a "dumb" question doesn't hurt anyont
@dot_Sp0T give in to peer pressure
@dot_Sp0T That's not aimed specifically at you
If all questions had to be from a small list, whoever made the list, the site would be boring.
20:09
@AndyD273 aaaah yeah that one
So ignore the ones you don't like
I didn't mean to convey any feeling of dislike or even antagonism against certain sorts of questions, I apologize if that came off like it
It's mostly the language barrier striking again I think
Also the vehicle question is not bad in itself, it's written quite good and shows that the author did some thinking on the subject. But it reminded me of worse examples and things that almost cried out "Think for me"
Anyways, it's 2210 here and I need to finish that Star Wars novel; Thanks for the chat folks :)
@dot_Sp0T well that is a different problem
@dot_Sp0T also, I note no such barrier
So whats everyone up to this weekend?
hot air balloon festival tonight, tomorrow the wife is working so time with the kids and video games.
20:24
Hot air balloons freak me out...
@James I might finish my left gauntlet, so I'll probably be doing my best to break all the bones in my hand
@DaaaahWhoosh What in the world are you talking about?
Oh, and my brother having a birthday get together tomorrow, so board games and stuff
Gonna see if I can get anyone interested in playing Tak
@AndyD273 I don't often play board games anymore...
@James I have a HEMA class/practice, so I decided to make some gauntlets. They're more like demi-mittens, but surprisingly the combination of cardboard and quilting nullifies a lot of force
20:29
my wife and her brothers are a big fan of Monopoly but they are seriously devious and evil, I played with them once and decided that participating further would be bad for our marriage.
@AndyD273 Tak the PS2 game?
I don't play much. Neither my wife nor I are all that competitive, so we typically don't play cut throat. We like Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan.
@DaaaahWhoosh No, Tak the board game from Name of the Wind
@AndyD273 oh, I guess that makes more sense in context
the PS2 game was good though
Rothfuss got together with a game creator to try to make the game that they play in the books. They had a kickstarter to make it, and also put up enough information that you could print your own if you wanted to.
I designed my own board and used the laser downstairs to engrave it
that is pretty awesome
though I don't think I've gotten to the part where they play it yet
20:37
I don't remember where that happens actually...
21:05
About to reach top 20 site users, Hail Questioners!

1 hour later…
22:34
Does the message on this bounty seem a little... Off to anyone else?

Q: How would exposing a female warrior's (mostly) bare bottom help her in combat?

JesseTGThere's a valid discussion about feminism and objectification of women to be had. This is not the place for it, nor do I attempt to make it one. I noticed that in Fire Emblem: Fates (and probably other games and media, but I couldn't name any off-hand), several of the female characters have the ...

@UncleTres I have complicated feelings on that question. I honestly don't see how anyone could believe that there's a significant advantage to the proposed battle armor. People did make some arguments for it, but I'm not really buying them. That said, I think some of the answers could have been phrased less crudely. Is there overt sexism on all of them? Of course not. Does that warrant the bounty? Maybe not.
But my takeaway is that male users were the primary commenters and posters on that thread, judging from some of the tones I saw. And there are a lot of cases where - how shall I say this - more polite synonyms could and should have been used.
Also, worldbuilders flagged a lot of things today. I don't remember the last time we've had so many flags.
22:55
@HDE226868 Agreed, that was my point, seems like more and more SJW's are joining WSE, Glarnak help us D:
23:07
@UncleTres ?
I was talking about the flags in a very positive context.
23:42
hey @HDE226868
