Also, found interesting info to give some ideas for battlesuits:

https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/XV8_Crisis_Battlesuit#Battlesuit_Operation

Yeah yeah, I know a lot of people dislike the Tau for being the good guys of Warhammer 40K
Also, this guy is a huge expert on weapons too:
I remember watching a lot of his show. I loved him. And he even played in one of the best Military Science Fiction shows in history: Space: Above and Beyond. :D
@Shalvenay BTW, do you think Military Sci-Fi is dying? I mean we haven't had a decent MSF game come out in a long time (since Halo I mean).

12:21 AM
@SCPilot I'm not sure, really, the SF world is probably being more darker/dystopic these days, which tends to bode ill for the military side of things

Why do you say that?
Why does that bode ill for the military side of things when SF world becomes darker?

my line of thinking is that people aren't going to be as interested in speculating about technological developments as a result

:(

Man that bites.
Well, I mean I'm reading the Forgotten Fleet series.

12:36 AM
But isn't military sci-fi a big part of the SF world?
@Shalvenay you still there?

1:11 AM
@SCPilot ah, I am, shoot :)

Well, isn't military sci-fi an important part of science fiction genre?

@SCPilot hellllllllll no

@JourneymanGeek Say what?

Military sci fi isn't dying
in fact, you'd see more

Oh good.

1:17 AM
Lots of mil-sci-fi is written by vets
and there's a bunch of good stuff out there
Just need to find it

ah, interesting point

Although there haven't really been a lot of good MSF games out there.

But yeah there are some good MSF novels.

I'm actually trying to write one myself actually.
I'm not a vet though, so it'll be a bit tough for me.

@SCPilot That's more on the games I suspect
tabletop wargaming's gotten somewhat rarer

Yeah. I was reading that the biggest problem is the developers and game companies.

You would think tabletop wargaming would be strong, but I guess not.

I mean there's Infinity: The Human Sphere and Warhammer 40K. And don't forget Battletech.

@SCPilot more that running a game shop is hard. And you're in the wierd situation where most people just want to sit around...
someone tried running a game cafe
but its literally a labour of love

1:21 AM
yeah, FLGS also have lots of other things competing for their attention

You'd probably have better luck merging it with a less physical hackerspace like ours

CCGs such as MtG are big, and you also have TTRPG folks, as well as general board game types

I mean Call of Duty has done a good job with MSF. Although people weren't happy about the Call of Duty Infinite Warfare game (I still don't see what they did wrong. I can't get anyone to tell me what's wrong with it; besides it using the same old cliche of where Earth defends itself from its former colonies).

There was actually an attempt to make a game cafe in my hometown. It lasted a while, but the people who ran it had to move away and they sold it where it became a regular cafe. There was another attempt to create a tabletop gaming group, but the guy who ran it turned it over to me
But yeah MtG is big and if you have just that one fanatic MtG player, then it's next to impossible to get others to do anything else.
And they get bored with MtG and leave the group.
But I think if they would just hurry and finish the Forever War movie and the remake of the Starship Troopers movie, it might increase interest in MSF.

@SCPilot that's a bit of a problem with gaming groups ;p

If they do those movies right that is!

1:26 AM
I don't want to use the T word but...
some oldschool players can be challenging to deal with

@JourneymanGeek yeah that is a problem with gaming groups.

Tell me about it.
But I heard the Starship Troopers remake will be more faithful to the book.

lol
I loved the movie
I still love the movie, but not as a starship troopers movie.

Oh?

I thought it was more of a parody of the book.

Yeah it's a pretty good movie.

Its like Verhoven read the book halfway, got bored and went his own way and spent all the budget on the bugs

He said he got depressed reading it, and thought the book was promoting fascism.

1:28 AM
Yup

He tried to make a parody of the book but people got confused and thought he was promoting fascism!

Which is plausible. Heinlein's politics swinged wildly

lol!

@SCPilot it was a really good parody

Oh?
What do you mean Heinlein's politics swing wildly?

1:29 AM
It was sarcasm so thick it was subtle

Yeah the movie was.

Oh
the book was earnest
and slightly preachy in the non combat bits

Hm....I see.
Well, Forever War was good. It's been awhile since I read the book. I think Michael Bay is interested in doing a movie of it. Or he might do a Halo movie.

1 hour later…
2:50 AM
Oh ih
@SCPilot ever read armor?
John Strickley is an odd one
he wrote two books
both of which inspired a lot of famous stuff
Armor is a military science fiction novel by John Steakley. It has some superficial similarities with Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers (such as the military use of exoskeletons and insect-like alien enemies) but concentrates more on the psychological effects of violence on human beings rather than on the political aspect of the military, which was the focus of Heinlein's novel. It was first published in December 1984. == Plot summary == Armor is the story of humanity's war against an alien race whose foot soldiers are three-meter-tall insects, referred to in the book as "ants". It is also...

I think I read it a long time ago. But only Armor. It was a good book. I'll probably reread it again.

I'm usually a Gundam fan, although I've been watching VOTOMs too.

11 hours later…
1:30 PM
Good morning

1:56 PM
@NexTerren Morning

2:31 PM
@AndyD273 How goes?

2:41 PM
@NexTerren Not too bad. Could use a nap, but that's normal

2:55 PM
@AndyD273 Ah, parenting...

@James I have naps... and I don't have kids. I count this as a win.

@James Yeah. Had to take the kids to the sitters this morning, so had to wake them up. They all wanted to sleep in eldests room last night since she has the biggest room, so I go in, start prodding, "Hey, where's youngest?" "She's sleeping in the closet." Kids...

LOL.

She had a little nest in there with a night light and everything

Cute.

3:09 PM
@James So after your story last week about being attacked by the people on twitter, I heard an interesting theory over the weekend; We currently have a 3 party political system, and no one noticed.

Democrats, Republicans, and Rage-issue-crans?

It's basically the conservatives, the liberals, and the regressives
But the regressives are hiding out in the democrat party like a cowbird chick, eating all the food and pushing the liberals out
They are brood parasites, and the party is protecting them even as they kill it.
Dangit! I should have gone with cuckoo chick... They are definitely cuckoos.

3:37 PM
@NexTerren I suddenly have the urge to launch you from a catapult.

I have an idea.
You know those optical illusion things?
I should get t-shirts printed with them.

@James :D
@Hosch250 There are a lot of optical illusions. Did you have anything more specific in mind?

Like that one that looks like it is spinning.

@AndyD273 What defines these regressives?

@James I'm assuming it's the "extreme social and economic" left within the left, like "alt-right" is the term for "extreme social and economic" right within the right.
Or at least that's how I see it used.
Enough of a difference where the fringe group vocally doesn't approve of the main body not being far enough in that direction.

3:56 PM
@NexTerren Basically yes. Its not the opposite of the alt-right, more like a mirror image, exactly the same, but coming from the opposite way.

@AndyD273 Fair.

...stupid in stereo.

A lot of the democrats are starting to acknowledge the immigration crisis the border. There is a bipartisan bill to help which has gotten support from almost everyone. It's just being blocked by the 4 or 5 cuckoos, who'd rather signal their virtue than provide a real solution.

@AndyD273 What does the bill suggest/enact?

@NexTerren I looked briefly, wasn't able to find much.

4:10 PM
Basically lots of border security stuff, but not the wall

@AndyD273 Seems like a weirdly reasonable compromise...
Frustrating that it takes is the abuse of minors to get us to talk...

@AndyD273 Hm. Interesting. Thanks for the link!

@James Even the New York Times thinks so. A report I heard said there were more illegals caught crossing the border in the first three months of 2019, than in all of 2018.

4:38 PM
@AndyD273 See, now it makes sense to deploy a few military units to the border. We have teams of specialists that can set up tent camps in 24 hours...these buildouts are pre-packaged and pre-positioned around the globe for rapid deployment...
Don't get me wrong, congress is on the hook too. But I am a little pissed that the white house is also playing this stupid game. Pence and Trump have been spouting off about how the democrats are solely to blame (democrats have been doing the same...) when they have the absolute authority to send a military unit to the border to build camps so people can freaking sleep and be safe. Ugh. This whole problem is so stupid.

I'll be honest, I don't know how to even come up with a fix for this. I mean, ideally, we'd help them feel safer at home, but we can't do that without another war...
And I'm not a fan of throwing our military around as a sort of global cop thing.

I mean, if we nuke Mexico there will be nobody left to feel unsafe. And if we do it too fast for Mexico to realize what is happening, can you really consider it a war?*

*This is 100% satire

@James You could be right. I don't know from a logistics point of view how to make that work. I don't know if a bunch of tents in the desert and having soldiers guarding a makeshift detention center is the best way or not. It might be, or it could be that the idea was talked about and rejected for non political reasons...
@Hosch250 I think that the best way is to convince them not to come in the first place.
Mexico isn't that bad, and it isn't really the problem either. There is crime and cartels in mexico, sure, but it's not a third world country either.
The problem is that the US southern border is perceived as being so weak and porous that people are literally flying to central america from Africa to cross illegally. They are starting to detain people from Congo and other African nations.

4:58 PM
In other words, we should build an airstrip and parachute factory on the border and just load them up in C130's as they cross and boot them out over their own country again? :P

My darlings
how are you?
how is the weather treating your various locations?

@dot_Sp0T I want fall. Where's fall?

@Hosch250 Not exactly, because of laws and stuff. If someone comes in asks for asylum, they have to, by law, check out if they qualify under the law for asylum. "My government wants to murder me because of my beliefs" is allowed under the law. "I just want to play playstation and get Buffalo Wild Wings" is not. "I am poor, and want to get a job in America" is also not.
The solution is to have enough border security that people see that their chances of getting in illegally isn't worth the danger of the trip. That was the purpose of the wall, as a symbol of "Border is closed, come in by front door only." A wall isn't the only way to do that. More agents, more patrols, more cameras, etc.
The thing with the wall is that in other places where they have been put up, both in the US and in other countries, illegal crossings have gone down, which means less manpower needed.

@AndyD273 I vote for subterranean drones. Mostly because mole drones would be friggin' sweet.

@AndyD273 Well, that could be the pre-boarding check :P

5:13 PM
@Hosch250 The line is so long the pre-boarding check would take 2 years.

Oh, and if your last name is Stork, don't become an Ob/Gyn doctor :P

I dunno, seems like a very fitting name

Also, if you are a trucker, don't call your company Stork Deliveries.

@AndyD273 Let's make it happen.

@NexTerren Could we use them to destroy the world?
Hmmm, what if we make them go rogue and tunnel under LA so the buildings fall down.

5:17 PM
I dunno, I don't really like the idea of underground autonomous kill drones... Or autonomous kill drones in general. That's how the machines take over...
And that's not the apocalypse that I want.
Although, it is close...

@AndyD273 Wait, which apocalypse do you want?

@NexTerren Ever read Daemon?

@AndyD273 The linux agents? Nah, I never read man pages.

Daemon and Freedomâ„¢ comprise a two-part novel by the author Daniel Suarez about a distributed, persistent computer application, The Daemon, that begins to change the real world after the original programmer's death. Daemon (2006) ISBN 978-0-9786271-0-2 paperback; (2009) hardcover re-release ISBN 978-0-525-95111-7 Freedomâ„¢ (2010) ISBN 978-0-525-95157-5 == Plot == Upon publication of the obituary for Matthew A. Sobol, a brilliant computer programmer and CTO of Cyberstorm Entertainment, a Daemon is activated. Sobol, dying of brain cancer, was fearful for humanity and began to envision a new world...

Huh. You really were talking about Linux Daemons. I was trying to be funny.

5:20 PM
@NexTerren it actually just got released that week!

@dot_Sp0T Or dodge in hell?

I had it preordered on Audible
It's next after I finish Dead Moon

I'm waiting for the mass-market apperback
sadly
but i got me metro2033 and a william gibson book instead

@dot_Sp0T I read Metro 2033... that book is weird.

5:24 PM
@AndyD273 it's glorious, it's so very different than typical western literature

@dot_Sp0T Not saying it wasn't good, but the supernatural elements were just strange
I'm curious if they have some symbolism that is lost to a non-russian

@AndyD273 most definitley

@NexTerren They are some great books. my summary goes something like "mad genius makes an AI monster, many thousands die, the world order is overthrown, and the end is beautiful."
Thought that's not entirely right, since it's not really an AI
Complete with autonomous, sword wielding super bikes.
@dot_Sp0T I do wish I had enough background to fully appreciate it.

@AndyD273 I wanna get around to learn the language soon-ish

I don't think knowing the language would help. Being able to read/speak russian isn't going to explain the symbolism of the Lovecraftian horror in the Kremlin, or the tunnel of death, or the ghost train.
Tunnels of death? There were several. Also whatever was in the pipe that caused them to space out near the beginning
Also the satan worshippers that were trying to dig a pit to hell... And succeeding apparently
So much weird

5:40 PM
not yet done btw

@dot_Sp0T @NexTerren Need to run an encounter I am planning to have happen tonight

@James shoot

So they are in a jungle
They will need to get back to town

@James Paladin lich?

is the encoutner to be the centerpiece?

5:50 PM
I plan on having them run into a druid grove...but not like...a nice hippy druid with a cute fuzzy pet.
@dot_Sp0T For tonight yeah.
So they will wander into the grove. (I will make them roll survival checks until they suck at it)

@James don't ahve more than 2 use the same skill in an hour, imo

The grove will be predominantly made up of rubber trees

vary skills, give them chances to use herbalism and shit

@James It's not railroading if they don't know it's happening!

@dot_Sp0T lol
@NexTerren heh

5:52 PM
@James why not a hag?

So anyway this will be an evil druid that has a shambling mound wandering around its lair.

@dot_Sp0T Druids are sexy

@dot_Sp0T I suppose a hag would work to honestly...

@James i mean obv don't have them know it's a hag
have them think it's a druid

@NexTerren One of my old characters had like...8 kids by a bunch of different NPCs...one was a druid.

5:53 PM
have cute fluffy animals come to him and all that stuff

Pinterest "Female Druid Fantasy Art" then "Female Hag Fantasy Art" and get back to me

@dot_Sp0T That could work.
@NexTerren I am NOT doing that at work.

@dot_Sp0T When you get to the end let me know... How far along are you?

and in the end it's a hag running a strong illusion spell there - that's what hags do right?
@AndyD273 2/5ths

So anyway I am going to give this dude lair actions, lair actions happen once per round at initiative 20

5:53 PM
@dot_Sp0T Sounds like they... hag... the spotlight. :(

One of the lair actions will be for the rubber trees to secrete their sap. The players will have to make a STR save or be restrained and the whole area will become difficult terrain.

lovely
i mean you could even make it a hag coven
have 3 hags sharing the illusion, all of them taking up the druid imagery to outsiders

Oh right, they will have a mini-encounter previous to this with assassin vines..

nice
also you might consider dropping them one of the weapons generated here: they're nice drops and utterly useless unless party is resourceful: lordbyng.net/inspiration/results.php

New creature I created, they are basically parasitic tentacles that are basically lampreys that feed on trees, but they strangle creatures and poison them so they then feed the tree.

5:56 PM
@James i likey
stats?
something along the lines of a planty-ratswarm?

@dot_Sp0T OK. I don't think I've spoiled anything. I would be curious for a non-american perspective on it.

So they first try to grapple, if you get grappled you take d6 piercing and d6 poison damage with a DC 10 or so to become poisoned.

@AndyD273 cando
@James sounds fun :) I try to have effects that have to do with how the members of the party equip themselves. e.g. someone putting a focus on robust clothing vs someone who likes to wear shawls

@dot_Sp0T It functions as individual creatures so Ill probably use 4-6 depending on how they do. 40hp, AC 14, +8 ATK, d6 piercing + d6 poison if grappeld. DC 14 to be grappled.

what's your partylevel?

6:00 PM
So that's the warm-up, how well do you manage your resources battle
@dot_Sp0T 4 level 10 players, Fighter, Cleric, Warlock, Sorcerer.

oh lvl 10, that means plenty potions and magic?

5e's max is level 20, right?

y

And at level 20 they're basically gods or at least demi-gods?

@NexTerren Yes, technically, though there are rules for going into epic levels.

6:01 PM
I now understand why u wanted that antimagic field

@James Oh, I bet epic is what I'm thinking of

@dot_Sp0T Right?

problem with hags is that you've got a cleric - they should be able to smell the hags
hmmm
you could go with a crazy druid; still same issue tho
your warlock might see straight through the illusions depending on the patron

@NexTerren Epic is anything beyond 20, at that point every time you level you can either choose and epic boon, a +2 to a stat (which can go beyond 20 at epic levels) or you can take another class level (a single class can only go up to 20)
@dot_Sp0T Can't remember which, we haven't played this campaign in 6 months

@James ohohoh

6:05 PM
Also my cyberpunk campaign fell through.

so antimagic happen in this area as well or later?

Back to D&D
Can't remember if I actually said... but not that it was hard to gather.

So then you have a druid and shambling mound in the grove, if the shambling mound hits with both its multi-atttacks it eats the person it hit. Restraining them until the mound is dead.
@dot_Sp0T Nah, not here, that is for the run in with the templars (mage hunters)

Besides location, what makes something a trade capital?

sooo, does help what we ahve so far or do we need more/ different?
@NexTerren resources
okay, no, everything boils down to location
unless you move to modern times - then it becomes LAWS

6:08 PM
@dot_Sp0T I feel like the druid needs more...damage potential. He will certainly have skills to control the battle, but he either needs minions or something beyond the shambling mound.

@James do with a hag-coven instead of a druid ? three hags

Okay, so my setting has a giant country-sized "no man's land" that no country can set up shop in via treaty law, with one city state grandfathered in. Three major nations and one semi-major nation borders this "no man's land." That should be plenty enough reason it'd be a trading capital?

@NexTerren the no-man's land? How can it be a trading capital if it cannot be settled?

@dot_Sp0T One citystate was grandfathered in as an exception (it's all that's left of the country that previously resided there).
There's a few other villages that technically infringe on the treaty, but they're so small and unaffiliated that frankly the other countries don't care about them.

@NexTerren so by law there is a citystate in that area, and nobody can touch it no matter what happens there?

6:12 PM
@dot_Sp0T Basically if you march troops into the region your country becomes fair game without breaking the treaty with the other countries.
A very big DMZ, except given it's Swords and Sorcery, I don't want to use the term "DMZ."

what prevents the citystate from building up an army and raiding the surrounding countries?

@NexTerren One nation decides to break the treaty, and another nation goes in to stop them. They meet at the city state capitol, there is a battle, and in the process the capitol is destroyed. And plot twist, the two nations were actually working together, and now they divide and occupy...

@AndyD273 I mean, that could certainly happen.
I mean naturally I'm setting this all up for plot shenanigans. :)

but otherwise, the location you have - central route, shortest possible way
as well as its laws
maybe it's the only place that allows trading with certain wares - in general drugs

What about a druid that has been magically dominated by a hag and they work together?
:O

6:22 PM
@dot_Sp0T Oh, I hadn't thought of that.
@James Oh, interesting. Especially if you could somehow introduce one or the other earlier.
Introduce nice Druid first = Don't suspect death
Introduce hag first = Assume druid is evil

@NexTerren The druid could ask them for help...disappear into a tree and then ITS A TRAP

@James A+

Hmm...or succubus + druid. Demons are kinda a central enemy force in the campaign.

idk i'd rather expect a succubus in tandem with a wizard or warlock
warlocks can have evil patrons after all
but succubus/incubus + druid might work as well
need cool reason tho

7:29 PM
@dot_Sp0T Actually one of the player's mom is a demon lord, basically a unique succubus I created...could be one of her minions.

@James "Dude, your mom is a succubus." Followed by many "your mother" jokes...

@AndyD273 ...yeah that is totally going to happen.

7:53 PM
@James Best option. Always tie into obvious character backstories.

Q: The difference between helpful editing and vandalism

JBHIn relation to How to play recorded music without electronics?. Over the course of time I have encountered questions where people other than the OP edited the question in an effort to resolve issues brought up in comments. Too frequently, the editing effort (no matter how well intended) changes...

8:12 PM
So looking at home security, and looking at Wyze...
So looking at Wyze...
I can get a motion sensor for my back door, a motion sensor for my front door, a motion sensor for my living room, a motion sensor for my weight room, a motion sensor for my study, a motion sensor for my bedroom, a door sensor for my front and back door as well as for every window (upstairs and downstairs) AND two cameras for ~$100.
How is it this cheap?!

8:24 PM
@NexTerren The motion sensors are actually cameras, and they sell the footage to a reality TV show
And/Or, you have to pay a monthly fee
You either pay for the product, or you are the product.
All of that is made up, please don't sue me Wyze

No monthly fee... yet. And it integrates in with IFTTT.

Actually, probably economy of scale

8:46 PM
Hmm, I do want some of those wyze cams
Actually, this could be exactly what I'm looking for. Small dog likes to run down to the basement to eat the cats food. If Wyze can detect small dog, and trigger IFTTT, then maybe I can wire up something to... negatively reinforce... small dog from going down there.

9:17 PM
@NexTerren Its totally going to be a neutralish druid that was charmed by a succubus, the players mom sent her to remind them to stay on task...and she was bored and evil so charmed a not evil character to attack the party.

9:35 PM
@AndyD273 And it has two-way microphone/speaker, so you can "BAD DOG" him. :P
@James I like, I like.

9:48 PM
Super quick question for you guys over here: we're running a Sandbox on Interpersonal.SE and basing a lot of it off of your Sandbox. We've got quite a lot of deleted questions now and I was wondering--about how many deleted questions do y'all let pile up before you open a new Sandbox?
