11:00 - 19:0019:00 - 00:00

7:20 PM
@Aify but that's the whole point, innit? Why you?
also 40min left
and I really oughta get some sleep soon

Ash
@Hosch250 Given that the carbon dioxide is getting stripped at the same rate shouldn't you stay conscious longer than that, I thought it was the gas imbalance that knocked people out long before the actually lack of oxygen became an issue.

According to the article I linked, you can survive for about 1 minute, they think.
You go unconscious within a few seconds.
TL;DR, the movies have everything wrong (as usual).

@Hosch250 When do the movies ever get thing right?

Search me.

Ash
@Hosch250 Actually it was in a book that I read, some space construction workers got trapped and had to do a bare-skin transfer, the thinking was that until you're blood got on a rolling boil, about the 2 minute mark you just felt horribly tight and uncomfortable.

7:32 PM
@Ash Your blood doesn't boil.
>Also, the blood would boil (yes, boil) as the oxygen in it was forced
>out, and blood would erupt from various places, such as the eyes and
>ears.

You've been watching too many movies. The Soyuz 11 cosmonauts spent
several minutes in vacuum when their capsule lost pressure before reentry.
Their bodies showed so little damage that the recovery crew started CPR,
and it took a careful investigation to establish the cause of death (they'd
also spent a then-unprecedented 24 days in space, and initial speculation

May I ask why we are discussing whether a human exposed to hard vacuum would have their blood boil?

Ash
@Hosch250 It should boil, it's way over the boiling point of water at those pressures.

@Ash Who says the blood is at that pressure? It's contained by the blood vessel walls.

@Gryphon Why not? :D
2

Also, you are forgetting that it would freeze pretty fast too.

7:37 PM
@Secespitus That is not a good argument for anything. Just saying.

Ash
@Hosch250 Not for long it won't be, it'll be coming through the walls of the lungs and gut if not a lot of other places..

Got to rush off to work, see you guys in a few hours to check how the election went.

@Ash Yeah, if it's not frozen already.
TBH, I don't know why it doesn't, but there's the evidence ^

A normal day in the Factory Floor: Is baby blood the equivalent to broccoli for vampires? Which liquid should be boil to get the superior temperature scale? Would your blood start boiling in space?
2

@Secespitus So to sum it all up, the perfect liquid to boil to get the most accurate temperature measurement is baby blood?

Ash
7:40 PM
@Secespitus Sounds about right to me, I'm glad I've started using this function a bit more.

@AndyD273 Baby blood is a good solution to nearly every problem.
2

Ash
@Secespitus Good luck with the elections.

@Ash Thanks
And once again I wonder what people would think if they randomly walked into this room and the first thing they see are multiple starred messages, each containing the phrase "baby blood".
Granted, normally the phrase is not "baby blood", but it's not too unusual for this room.

16 MINUTES!

@James yeah don't say it man

7:43 PM
Damn, you guys are starting to make me nervous.

nothin to be nervous about, if you don't get the job i'll start doubting the community
I'll also start doubting them if I get the other job

@Secespitus Don't worry man I am sure you didn't come in at 9th place.

@James That would be difficult

@James I came in at 10th place in the CR election once.
11th and 12th were booted out.

oh dear

Ash
7:47 PM
@Secespitus Yeah we do deal in the strange and macabre here sometimes.

@Ash Right. Sometimes. :D

Ash
@Secespitus I was being generous, and/or optimistic.

@dot_Sp0T Thanks, but I wouldn't be too sure. Most votes likely come from people mainly on the main site and those will see a lot of other names more often in answers/questions.

@Secespitus I like to make safe bets.

7:49 PM
@Ash Well, depending on air pressure, you could boil for quite a while and be pretty comfortable, if it's low enough. IIRC it's impossible to cook potatoes at very high altitude, as the boiling water never gets hot enough to actually cook the potato.

@AndyD273 just put it in a closed container, pressure baby
dun dun dun dara dara

@dot_Sp0T Probably, especially if it's made for pressure, like a pressure cooker

Waiting for the election to end is like a strange version of Schrodinger's cat.

@James you are on a roll today

Instead of an alive or dead cat though we are waiting to see if a @Secespitus or @dot_Sp0T or @AndyD273 will fall out.

7:52 PM
8 minutes to change your vote!

well, at least two of these people have my vote

@Hosch250 ^^ Russian hacker. Quit meddling in our elections.

@dot_Sp0T Same here.

5 minutes

6

7:55 PM
7

Damn, the madness is even starting in other chats...

@dot_Sp0T likes to take away your guns and make your babies speak esperanto

AHHHHHH! I'd better change my vote!

yeah, we're like super important

and @Secespitus wants to control your healthcare and force you to use nuclear power to destroy moons. Protect your chemistry and anti-matter! Don't vote for him.

7:57 PM
@James But... destroying moons is fun...

What about Andy?
@Secespitus Not when you live on them :P

@Hosch250 @Andy wants to destroy galaxies, not moons.

LOL.

Much more spectacular.

Yep, Andy's got my vote. Sorry, <redacted>.
2 minutes.

7:58 PM
and don't get me started on @AndyD273 He thinks immigrants from Mars are going to take your jobs and wants to keep troglodytes under boot.

I am going to build a wall around worldbuilding! A pay-wall!

@dot_Sp0T Ok now see you went too far, that is actually terrifying.
2

Yeah, that is terrifying.

it is over

@Green

8:00 PM
Only 511 voted???

it is over
@Hosch250 what did you expect? this is a popular stack, not a dedicated one

We had 845 on our last CR one.
I suppose.

@dot_Sp0T What did I say? :D

@Secespitus They're taking the hobbits to Isengart?

8:03 PM
@dot_Sp0T Not that, that other thing

Well, I voted for Monty obv
How the hell did @James win in the last election again?

Dutch got my vote.

Anyone gonna graph up the data?

Sece almost won. You were my first pick. And Andy was my third.

Well, I'm def not gonna talk to you anymore

8:10 PM
Ah well, maybe I'll get my hat next time :)

Maybe next time I won't say.

Q: 2018 Community Moderator Election Results

Shog9Worldbuilding's 3rd moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the 2 new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For details on how...

@James Did you get my book offer?
@James what's up?
I voted. What more do you want from me?

@Green Your brain.
He wants to eat it.

8:26 PM
@Hosch250 Well, my brain ain't big enough to share. He'll have to borrow a brain from someone else so he can come find mine.

8:53 PM
sob
None of the candidates I voted for won!
How could Secespitus not win?

@FoxElemental He was leading until the last-choice votes kicked in.

If Sece doesn't win next year (there will be another election next year, right?) something is wrong.
TBH I hadn't even heard of Monty Wild until the election

@MontyWild's been around for quite some time, although they've been a bit less active than they used to - they've been pretty involved in the site since the start.

@FoxElemental Monty's sort of a lurker. Though they're always where the action is

9:05 PM
I'm sure they'll all be great mods.

Yes
@Secespitus Howya feelin?

9:33 PM
@Hosch250 Bahahaha

9:44 PM
@FoxElemental Depends really. Elections usually happen when there is a spot open, so unless a slot is empty...
@Green Zing.
Am i delusional or is this really broad?

Q: Advantages of Monogamy over Polygamy and Vice Versa In Nature?

Preg-FanSome animals take on a single partner, possibly for life, while others have multiple partners over their lifetime, possibly even at the same time. What are the advantages to each approach, and how much is conscious choice verses instinct?

10:34 PM
hey there @James

1 hour later…
11:36 PM
@FoxElemental Sec has 13k rep. I imagine casual voters who haven't been following meta etc would tend to default to higher rep candidates so I'm not surprised by the result. In fact it's extremely impressive that he got as close as he did since only Monica has ever been elected with significantly less than 20k rep and she was already a pro-tem so had incumbent advantage.
@James Basically this. On average there is one every year (and if we need another mod for some reason before a year they sometimes offer it to the runners up from the previous election rather than running a new one) but it's done as needed not on any fixed schedule.
