Now I only have 8 questions in the Sandbox

@FoxElemental - I guess it's you I'm supposed to be asking about ... can I help you with some graphics?

Yes, thank you. Give me a minute to get the link up

No worries.

I wanted to add the words "Built Your World? Now Build Your Language!"
And it needs to be scaled to 600x500, if I got that correctly

Yah, that's the correct size, IIRC

12:07 AM
So how can I adjust the text and size?

With all due respect, I'd work on the image first.
It needs some help. While I'm not an expert, there's a lot of edges and stuff going on which makes it look not so good.

How do you think it needs to be fixed, @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2
?

Look at the SE logo ... the edges are pixelated. It should be smooth.
Looking at the pyramid, you can see pixelation going on there ... it's like a saw tooth.

What can I do to modify it?

I wish I had the original file to work with ... I could give it some love.
What tools are you using?
software

12:12 AM
None; just one of the suggested ads by elemtilas on ConLang, on conlang meta

I've got PhotoShop as well as Illustrator ... I might be able to clean up the image a little bit ... then I can add some text in there for you. What color should the font be? Just white on the black area?

I was thinking white or very light grey, yes. thank you for the help!
It was adapted (copied) from this post on Conlang, the first of 2 by elemtilas
I've got to go in 14 minutes; but I'll gladly adapt this a little more tomorrow and edit my current post.

This is going to take me a few ... I'll ping you when I have something.

Okay . . . thanks so much for the help! I'll credit you with the integration of the phrase/sizing in the answer

No credit yet ... figuring out I cannot do much with it to clean it up.

12:31 AM
Any help is appreciated; I think it's workable so long as it has text and clearly defined, correctly sized borders. I have to leave now but I'll be in contact tomorrow morning

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

FoxElementalKeeping Magical Humanoids at Various Positions Info In my world, there are three distinct magical humanoid races (leaving magical animals/elementals for a separate topic). These three are Mages (Classic Fire/Water/Air/Earth powers: fireballs, water/earth/air manipulation.) On: Witches (Class...

1:07 AM
@FoxElemental - Here is a start ... we'll see how you like it. I had to lengthen the top/bottom (extended the colors some), then put some font in there. Like I said ... a start.
(If you are wondering, all of the deletes were "tries" ... This looks better ... I think ...)
@FoxElemental - Also, in the ad, you can only have the image and the markup. Don't put the extra "stuff" in there. You can add it as a comment, if you like, but if there's extra stuff, it won't make it as an ad on the page.
I won't be able to do anything else with it until I get home from work, which is after 4pm Eastern in the States (I'm in Virginia). Whatever I can do to help. Thanks @MonicaCellio for pinging me :o) Hope you're well!

1:37 AM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 thanks for your help! When I pinged you I was thinking you'd point Fox at some tools or something, not actually take on the project. Your version looks great!

11 hours later…
12:33 PM
@MonicaCellio - You know I don't have an issue with helping. I don't think common tools would have been easy to use to make the changes I did. Getting it to 600x500 format is not hard for PhotoShop ... getting it there using other tools, not so much. Plus Illustrator makes the fonts look better and much easier to manipulate.
I'm definitely not trying to usurp Fox's ideas, just want to help.

12:57 PM
@James What say you? This feels too broad but it was just reopened.

Q: How would you bring wealth back to the past?

mweissSuppose you have a working time machine. You decide to go back 50 years and buy a house; after all, in 1968 the average cost of a new house was just about $15,000, quite a bargain! The problem: How do you transfer $15,000 back in time with you? Cash, obviously, won't work, unless you somehow ...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 , that looks amazing!!! I'll update it as soon as possible. It looks perfect already

2:29 PM
@Green: You've been a lot of help in the Sandbox; not to intrude on your time, but if any time in the next week you could please help me with This one, this one, or this one?Appreciated

@FoxElemental Well, for your UN question, the formatting is way way way better.

@Green Broad...but no broader than a lot of things. It definitely needs constraints.

@James Agreedf.

I cleaned up the comments and left one of my own. I don't feel the need to mod it shut.

@FoxElemental Perhaps a different persective will help that question. State your aim for a world government and the various pressures to create/destroy a world government body. The UN is a giant complicated thing with lots of history that is very different from the history of the world you are building.
Just say you want a world government and ask what that would look like. In this light, all the political information you've included will be relevant to the question.
@James I added some suggestions for constraints.

3:25 PM
@Green, edited. Can you take one last look at it, please? Thank you for all of the amazing feedback you've given me regarding this question

@FoxElemental Well, I'm bummed I'm not quoted anymore but my ego can take it ;)

LOL. I'm going to mention you in my "Thank you to the Sandbox" note at the end, don't worry

No need to put worldwide in quotes. It is a worldwide government.
I'd remove all references to the UN. That will just anchor responders on the UN which is what we don't want to happen.

What should I replace it w/?
especially in the title?

Nothing. You already ask for a worldwide government. Just stick with that.

3:31 PM
Gimmie a min. This might take a while

AFK for a while.

yep. Working edits piece by piece
@Green, edited. I think I got all the mentions of the UN out of there. Is there anything else? I'm going to start readying this for main. Besides other body edits, should I consider different tags? Constraints?

@FoxElemental - I'm glad you like it ... still, if you think it can be improved, we can work on it. Just let me know ... or roll with it! :o)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 , it's been posted and I credited you in the comments. Good to go! Thanks for the help

3:59 PM
@FoxElemental - Thanks for the credit, but there was no real need. Just helping out.

4:32 PM
You know what's awesome? I am listening to an audio book and one of the characters sounds like the Macho Man Randy Savage.

@FoxElemental I think it's good enough for Main.
@James Uooohhh YEAAAHHHH!!!
@James Cream of the Crop!

@Green - RIP Macho Man

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Perhaps you can clarify. If wrestling is scripted, how can someone be declared to have "won"?
Why do titles mean anyt
hing if someone just decides "Okay, Macho Man, it's your turn to win".

5:04 PM
@Green Its reality TV, that's less stupid than our current political discourse.

@James Ah. I forgot that it was reality TV before reality TV was a thing.

@Green I'd frankly rather have President Macho Man at this point.

513.784. I do believe that's a record.

@James Macho Man knows how to hit a guy, no slap them like a b***. youtube.com/watch?v=S0SM09X4w8E

5:08 PM
lol
Anyone else see that he thinks he can pardon himself of crimes now?

@James Sure, he may be able to pardon himself; which sets a stupid bad precedent.
If he has to pardon himself, then that means he's guilty of all kinds of shenanigans. I wonder what it would take for his supporters to finally remove their support.
I read/heard somewhere that the crimes he and his cronies are being accused of are being done at the state level where the president doesn't have jurisdiction.
@HDE226868 record for what?

@Green Most "hotness points" of a single question. (And it's only a guess that it's a record of some sort.)

@HDE226868 is that some kind of mod power to see hotness points?

@Green Nope. Mouse over the question on the HNQ list on stackexchange.com.

@HDE226868 Ah, cool! I never got to stackexchange.com.

5:18 PM
@Green Actually there's a DOJ opinion from the Nixon days that says the president can't do that.

@James Sure wish the founding fathers had written that part in. So much for assuming the people will pick half-decent people to lead the Executive.

Some democratic senator reminded him this is not a monarchy and he is not a king...

@FoxElemental Best of luck with it! I hope you get some good answers.

@Green Thank you, and thank you for all your help with it

5:22 PM
@FoxElemental I do what I can.
I hope you're around for a long time to get the subtle nuances of good questions and answers that only comes with long experience.

I plan on staying here :)

@FoxElemental It's been a good home for me.

@Green - No clue. I was just commenting that the Late Great Randy Savage should Rest In Peace.

He's weird. We appreciate weird.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Ah, gotcha.

5:29 PM
He was a character which lives well beyond his mortal life.

@James I'm funny too, ocassionally.

Dare I mention, "Snap into a Slim Jim"

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 That one too!

@Green Eh...kind of.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Oh my...I had forgotten about those.

@James If not funny then insightful. Look at the number of starred comments I've got.

5:31 PM
Like I said, Character. Some of could only hope to have as much as he had!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Wait, wasn't it snap not step?

@James I thought that too.

@James ROFL! I think you're right, lol!

@Green Those are pity stars its a big team conspiracy to make you feel good.

@James - Better? :o)

5:32 PM
@James Don't be sour just 'cause I can get a big team conspiracy to give me stars and you can't ;)

@Green heh.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 He can rest in peace now.

ROFL!
Yes indeedy!

@Green, edited the windsilk question. Anything else? Also: I'm unsure as to whether this should be hard-science or science-based. I get that science-based is easier and more open to this type of handwavium, but the idea of the citations from hard-science is appealing. Opinions? Other tag edits? Title edits? Constraints?
And, BTW, I'm proud to say I now have only 7 Sandboxed drafts!
Anyways
leaving in 5 min

5:49 PM
@FoxElemental My heuristic is that the and are mutually exclusive. It just makes it hard to figure out which one is which and where magic should be applied and where science should be applied.

Hmm. Good point. Should I add constraints, or just throw the magic tag out of the window?
@Green ?

In the world of the question, the responder will have to figure out where magic ends and science starts. That cognitive task is tricky enough. No need to further complicate it with conflicting tags.
@FoxElemental I'd keep magic and ditch science.

Hmm. But I want a realistic, real-world material, not one of pure handwavium

Spinning strands of silk with magic sheathing is much easier to describe than building tubes to hold high pressure/high flow gases.

Right . . . but the question I'm asking is specifically about the material , not the mechanics . . . unless I'm confusing this w/ another question

5:53 PM
@FoxElemental Spider silk is already kind of magic. I don't see why you would need to handwave that.
Even if you go with the spider silk tubes, that would still work.
Assuming this spider species is really old (100s of millions of years) then they've had plenty of time to get a really high performing spider silk appropriate to the task you describe.

Hmm. Good points. I'll leave this for a little later
Gotta run

6:21 PM
@FoxElemental But if you want something fragile then spider silk with magic sheathing fits better than spider silk tubes to control the airflow. Tubes are far far more robust than mere strands of silk. No one talks about carbon nano-chains of single carbon atom links. They always talk about carbon nano-tubes.

4 hours later…
10:06 PM
@Green Mmm . . . so then I should edit it back so that the silk is hollow?
@Bellerophon to ask your expert opinion, with and as two of your main tags, could you please read through and help me with this draft? I'm planning on moving it to main in 2-5 days and want to refine it as much as possible.
@Green Not to discount your view or points, but this meta post is a nice thinking piece, both on the tag issue and in general for magic/science conflicted questions

10:24 PM
@FoxElemental That meta post doesn't state a preference for using magic to solve problems. It's about default starting points for formulating answers. The post states that answers should start from science then incorporate magic....which is how I've always answered questions. Science and physics are known systems. Magic is not.

10:59 PM
hey there @Green

@Shalvenay hey!
@FoxElemental if it were my question, I'd go with the spider silk and magic sheathing. No silk tubes.
Going the magic sheathing route also gives you more leeway with the aerodynamics of high speed air in small tubes. You also don't mention a power source that is going to inject enough energy into this system to get 45mph winds in tiny vortex generators.

@Green: Ohhhh. I thought you meant using generic spider silk. Facepalm. Yes, that's an excellent idea. I'll edit when I can

Magic sheathing let's you easily handwave that the speeds increase inside the sheathing instead of the more mundane surface drag equations you get with mundane tubes.

11:14 PM
Yes. Will update: thank you
Just edited.

Without magic to accelerate or to not induce airspeed killing drag, this idea won't work. Trying to shove high speed air through a network of glass tubes will have huge drag losses.

Yep. Added the handwaved wind speeds

Compare the drag induced by pushing air through a big glass tube vs trying to push it through a sponge of the same length.

Yep. I have to go but will be back either later tonight or tomorrow morning

@FoxElemental another point is that you asked for something economical for the spider to make. Spider silk tubes are usually pretty short and well protected. Spider webs can be made in an evening and consume relatively little material. Just a pointer for later construction.

11:48 PM
Thank you for all the feedback, @Green. I'll update it later.
