Hmmmmmm. I wonder if this version of a terraformed Earth could work.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Questions

Shard martinWhy would magic make carrying a girl to term be more difficult for the mother? In this world, human beings have access to magic, which is a slow and ritualized process. However, girls are born with more magical capability than boys. As a result, females mages are far more powerful than male mage...

5 hours later…
5:50 AM
that is literally superimposing venus on earth

4 hours later…
10:18 AM
@Secret. Actually, that Earth has 3% SO2 and 4% CO2.

hmm, so the visitors are a sulfur loving species that prefer an oxidising environment?

Would there even be any ice left in Greenland by that point? Or that much water still liquid in the oceans?

@FerretCivilization. What happens to H2O when it meets sulphuric acid?

You no longer have water or sulfuric acid.

@FerretCivilization? What do you mean?

10:32 AM
Had to look up the exact equation myself: H2SO4 + H2O → H3O+ + HSO4-

i.e. expect the oceans to be slightly acidic
also how much warming will 4% CO2 contribute?

Slightly acidic and warmer, means a ton of dead marine life.

Well, this is compensated by 3% SO2.
So, slightly warmer but not too warm for CO2 to be a problem (yet).

based on current levels (which is on the 0.041% range), 3% CO2 will be more than enough to cause a lot of warming. I need to check whether SO2 helps cooling as I only know it is non greenhouse
ah ok, the sulfuric acid droplets helps reflect away some of the sunlight
I don't know the exact numbers without an atmospheric model, though

10:49 AM
From just looking around at that, wattsupwiththat.com/2015/05/26/…

0.4-1.5C hmm...

1 hour later…
11:58 AM
So, does this help?
:P

12:09 PM
yeah, slight warming, maybe close to what we are heading right now
The visitor's ecosystem will probably enjoy such warm temperatures, but earth's local ecosystem will probably become different to what we knew at the present day

12:28 PM
@Secret? Present day as in: 2018?

yup

Or present day as in: at the time of the Invasion (2027 after a few retcons)?

2018

I have not followed closely what happened during 2027 in this Verse

12:29 PM
Well, by 2027...........climate change state = ??????????
Oh. 2021. The Leviathan is first spotted by the James Webb Space Telescope 2.6 light years away from our Solar System slowing down.
Shortly after announcement weeks later, the world's response is mixed.
The UN bickers and argues in the meantime, while SETI tries to communicate with the Visitors.
And no response............
2025. The Visitors enter orbit around Saturn and prepare to set up a basic industrial and manufacturing base in the Saturn Moon System, starting with Titan and Hyperion.
Months later, they make their transfer burn to Earth.
Early 2027. Contact is lost with Musk Outpost as the Visitor spacecraft passes by Mars.

transfer burn?

Hohmann Transfer Orbit burn.
Weeks later, the world enters on high alert.
August, 2027. The Visitors enter Cislunar space and reports of space engagements between the unmanned orbital defences on the Moon and Earth's few manned space force assets are received on Earth.
The next day, contact is lost with the Lunar defences. Earth realises that they are at war.
August 17, 2027. Three days after the disastrous defence of Luna, Earth's orbital defences are knocked out of commission, while railguns bomb major cities and most military air bases across the globe.
Four hours later, the Visitors deploy ground troops to the targeted cities, which pre-Invasion hosted more than 1,000,000 or more inhabitants.
Within hours, they are emptied of human life. For the next four days, the armies of the world try and fail to stop the Invasion.
By the 21st of August, civilisation has collapsed and 3.9 billion are dead.
Out of a population of 8.3 billion.
2.3 billion more would die of other causes, mainly starvation, disease, dehydration, other desperate survivors, etc.
By the 22nd, a global puppet government is established called the Global Prosperity Initiative or GPI for short.
Meanwhile, Earth's remaining military forces, local militias and guerrilla groups begin their efforts to fight a guerrilla war over the next ten years.
In 2037, however, another group of Visitors, these ones with the intent to liberate the occupied Earth are spotted by the Visitors as their rivals begin their deceleration burn.
The initial invasion force in the coming months is later struck by a silent coup, as the original leaders are executed by expelling them out of the airlock, and the new leadership begins the nuclear bombardment of Earth.
As they do so, they begin to use the drones to hunt down the survivors and eliminate the remaining 2.1 billion humans that were alive prior to the nuclear bombardment.
By 2041, the last humans were exterminated, though friendly Visitor forces had begun their campaign for control of the Solar System.
Unfortunately, they are repulsed by the initial force's local assets, and as the years pass, they colonise the Earth.
37,000 years later, the Voyager 2 probe is recovered just outside of the Ross 248 star system; specifically in its Oort Cloud.
After weeks of study, these Visitors, whom have never even known humans existed up until this point, finally play the Voyager Golden Record and the series ends.
:P
@Secret? Does this help?

yeah, that's sure helps catching up

@Secret? I have an idea.
In a film version, would it be hilarious if the Russians tried to make a final stand with the Russian Anthem playing in the background?
:P
Against the Visitors, I mean.

12:45 PM
why russians specifically?

Because why not?
:P
It does not have to be them.
But.....you know.
Imagine a scene like that and the Russian anthem playing in the background, or being sung by a choir as the battle unfolds.
:P

12:58 PM
Basically, I thought such a scene would be hilarious as the Russians get slaughtered left and right.

1:26 PM
@FerretCivilization? You think that would be a funny scene in a film?
In a dark way?

Feels just like a 'Meh' thing to me.

1:37 PM
@FerretCivilization? I just realised something.
Kepler 442b = Lyra constellation.
KIC 8462852 = Cygnus constellation.
Cygnus constellation is near the Lyra constellation.
So, that = Visitors confirmed?
In real life?
In a way?

Huh, as of right now, no?

Well, in this setting.........Visitors confirmed?
As of the time we spotted KIC 8462852's dimming?
Because I have a theory (in-setting) and it is unsettling.
KIC 8462852 is to Kepler 442b what TRAPPIST-1 is to Earth.

Well if that is what you want to say then okay.

Basically, if the Visitors have that system, it probably surpassed Kepler 442b in population, resources, GDP and grandeur.
So, in-setting..............
First Contact already happened as of 2018.
It is called KIC 8462852.
It is genius!
@FerretCivilization? Now that I think about it, is that even plausible?

1:57 PM
Up to you I would think.

unfortunately, Tabby's star is likely just a dusty one
But this is not reality, so whatever can happen, happen

Pretty much that, you already said space was militarized, and that there are aliens invading, so you got your own reality for your story set up. And it is your story, have to keep up the reminders that you can say anything you want for your story when it comes to telling it.

The story I want for my Verse, meanwhile is an ambitious one
I want reality itself to be a character and actively influencing the story and its Verse
this is very hard. Combined with the fact that I suck at writing stories, so far I only have a stage which I do most of my worldbuilding on

btw this is my "base of operations" which contains the world I worldbuilt so far
Most of the time however, I use worldbuilding to explore philosophical questions, though
That's the "universe" of my Verse
Note the Big Freaking Gap that no fiction can cross over
hence my constant rambling that no one has ever truly broken the 4th wall
(well, not entirely true, for a genre, known as science fiction, occassionally managed to made its way to reality)
Practically, however, my stories (if any) are often based within one of those blobs you saw in the VERSE, which is itself a multiverse
Therefore this work has the property of being impossible to finish. This is because in order for such work to be finished, you will need full knowledge of everything we know as humans, everything we know as aliens, full knowledge of how every single Verse that has been created and will be created, etc. etc. etc.
In other words, omniscience and that every single writer are willing to contribute into the work
So practically speaking, in universe, VERSE really don't play much role, except to introduce crossovers when the opportunity arises
but I like to mess with really meta things, so, this is included as a placeholder

2:24 PM
@Secret? You do not think that the concept I created is nihilistic, is it?
After all: I want the characters to be part of this world, BUT I kind of want to give the reader a sense of realism and cosmic horror combined.

Well, we had the lovecraftian mythos, and that aims to instill a notion of cosmic horror, thus I don't see any problem of being nihilistic
Alien invasion is a possibility some time in the future, thus it is good to ponder about it

@Secret? What about in my case by comparison?
I went hard science fiction during this process.
As in: if the realism and cosmic horror elements are added in, real science is used to emphasise them.
You know what I mean?

there's nothing wrong with that. IMO, I think we need a little bit more hard scifi, as the modern days are filled with soft ones

Agreed.
I am trying to do exactly that.

which while good and does stir discussion, sometimes lack the accuracy.

2:27 PM
And use this series to deconstruct the extraterrestrial invasion subgenre to the core and rebuild it from the ground up.
So, for example: what tropes (besides humans SOMEHOW winning) could this series potentially deconstruct?
Since humans obviously lose.
Badly.

But writing a good hard scifi is hard, as you have to be careful how you use the science terminologies to not confuse and bore your audience and how you execute them to keep the story interesting
I am not very good at deconstruction yet, thus I am unable to answer that question

Well, think of tropes in the genre.
Extraterrestrials SOMEHOW just hover major cities.
Not happening in the Visitor series.
Instead, the world's major cities are bombed into oblivion along with military air bases left and right.
Extraterrestrials having ZERO tactical consideration?
Wrong! Orbital bombardment reflects that, as do the ground combat operations.
Humans win? Not happening. The conventional phase lasts only four days and the humans are extinct by 2041.

The site of all tropes

So........................
I know that.
I use TV Tropes A LOT.
I just have no idea which ones fit this setting that I can deconstruct.

it seems clear you are subverting many common tropes of the alien invasion theme, that will get you started by checking anything about aliens and extraterrestials on that page

2:33 PM
Well, the TV Tropes page on the Alien Invasion thing DID point out a way to deconstruct them.
At least how it begins.
Orbital bombardment.
And that was AFTER I came up with the idea for orbital bombardment being how the Invasion of Earth begins.
@Secret? Where do the Visitors end up?
In the tropes part?
Because I am trying to make them.........well, NOT humanoid.
I am going to guess Starfish extraterrestrials in function, but appearance is complicated.
Right?

definitely non humanoid, as for the rest it is up to you
you might want to avoid insectoids, as that is so overused

Non-human-like.
Checked.
Nonhuman psychology? Checked.
They can survive in Earth-like conditions, despite the high gravity of Kepler 442b.
They can speak in ultrasound and high frequnecy human tones.
So, different motory and sensory and communication skills is checked. More so if you include the eight jaws.
Nonhuman reproductive system? It is fungus reproductive system combined with a jellyfish life cycle. What do you think?
So, it has FOUR out of FIVE of these traits.
And minimum: 2 out of 5.
See? @Secret.
It is like an insect + an amphibian (in the sense its skin can change based on humidity) + a fungus + a jellyfish.
Only.....it kind of looks like a space dog in appearance until the outer jaws open.

@Secret Well that is quite the read, you actually have a plan to make a series of stories out of that?

@FerretCivilization? With the rest outer jaws closed, the Visitors look like space dogs, right?
Well, if that thing was near you and it opened its outer jaws, would you be a bit scared?
I know I would.

2:48 PM
Space dog, probably. Anything with four legs and a tail would do by that standard. Dogtaur. Though if one was near me either I would be shooting it or dying, in either case I would have more pressing issues to focus on than fear.

Assuming it was not trying to kill you, I mean.
if it was trying to talk to you, for example. Would you be scared or nervous most likely once those outer jaws opened?

I would still be trying to kill it if I was not dying.

The plan is not very clear yet, given how I mainly using the stage to investigate philosophical question more than storytelling. You can still see some scattered stories though, they are from my dreams.

Thus in a sense, the active author in my Verse are my dreams hence my subconscious
and I am mostly being the editor picking stories that are good from the author

@FerretCivilization? Why? It is trying to talk to you.

My longer term plan is to try to make the stories themselves to interact as if they are characters, but I have not figure out yet on how to pull this off

2:54 PM
@Secret Ha, figured you were either using them as a base or practice. Though overall it looks good, haven't made much sense of it myself, but it looks good, heh.

As of the current setting, at the largest scale, the storychains (isolated stories and episodes that are so lifelike they are like characters themselves) are the major thing in my Verse

Hmmmm. @Secret? Would you shoot it as well?

@FutureHistorian Well first off, how would I know that. And is this happening after my home was bombed nation invaded and all out war going on or is this just a closed bubble I just met this fricken thing out in the woods like ET.

True.
Still, why shoot it? Is it fear? Anger? What?

@FutureHistorian I think the first thing I did is to run away

2:57 PM
As it opens its outer jaws just to talk to you?

Survival comes to mind if I was caught in that situation of being that close to one of them in your story. Maybe some anger.

Then again, it does not speak English.
Or a human language for that matter.
Unless it is an officer.

Ferret: But the hardest of all, as an analogy is to "hire reality itself as an actor"

And even then, it is basic and not good at it.

@Secret Feel like if you pull that off Douglas Adams would be proud of you, ha.

3:01 PM
@FutureHistorian The problem is that your bleck setting means any human surviving will be in a state so paranoid and survivial oriented they will just shoot these things down or run away when they first saw them. Very feel will still be innocent or calm enough to try to communicate with them. Meanwhile there will be very few members of the visitors who have peaceful intention given how they invade very quickly and coordinated
Any human will need a sufficiently good reason to think under such stressful environment, that whatever is in front of them is not trying to kill them
and we humans are best known to be highly emotionally driven irrational creatures

3:36 PM
@Secret. In other words...........even in the GPI days, the Visitors would be hard to talk to, right?

yeah it will be hard, given how they devastated our home and your timeline basically showed how they are still very aggressive
anyway it's 2:41 I am heading to sleep

4:11 PM
hey there @Mithrandir24601

4:26 PM
True.

2 hours later…
6:08 PM
Hmmmmm.
I wonder if using nuclear torpedoes that rely on antimatter as a catalyst are a good idea for space combat.

6:20 PM
@Shalvenay Ni hao! I've just finished dinner and am watching that BBC surgeons TV show - they're currently trying to cure someone's deafness :O This is amazing

@Mithrandir24601 heheh. did I tell you about the challenge I was thinking of for Daenrys and Drogon btw? (also, reading a fascinating case where some employers tried to ban class legal actions of any sort as part of an arbitration clause, and the employees sued saying that "federal employment law says you can't restrict our right to concerted legal action that way")

@Shalvenay I don't think so... Sounds like an interesting case, although not quite as interesting as watching live surgery :P

@Mithrandir24601 so yeah, my rather herculean challenge for Daenrys and Drogon: "Euron's out there stranded at sea and needs supplies something terrible. He's managed to clear 500' of space for Drogon to land on, and here's ten tons of provisions for you and Drogon to bring to him. Now, load 'em up and get a move on!"

@Shalvenay One problem: They won't want to :P

@Mithrandir24601 well, substitute Euron with some seafaring type in Daenrys' camp, if you will, then :)

6:27 PM
@Shalvenay I think it'd depend on how well they know the location/Drogon's eyesight

@Mithrandir24601 yeah, I'm just wondering if Drogon could manage the landing xD

Best way would be to drop low over the space then drop the provisions and fly off to somewhere easier to land.

6:42 PM
@Shalvenay I'd think so...

@Bellerophon yeah, not sure how carrying the provisions in a way suitable for airdrop would impact C.G. and the likes tho
@Mithrandir24601 I guess the bigger challenge would be getting ten tons of stuff off the boat xD

2 hours later…
8:13 PM
Latest update: They're attempting to use a genetically modified virus to cure a cancer. Welcome to the future :O

1 hour later…
9:27 PM

9:40 PM
@Bellerophon Yeah, my T-cells (I think) apparently attack my own throat (my immune system is most definitely messed up in some weird way that is almost harmless most of the time) from time to time. It's not particularly pleasant, to say the least :/ Thankfully it's nothing like Leukaemia, but it still led to one or two moderately scary conversations with the GP when I got the flu last year :/

So, which of the two designs would work better?
Oh and.........the third image is the former’s warhead design.
They are both unmanned suicide drones/“torpedoes”.

@Mithrandir24601 Part of the reason I want to go into medicine is because you get to do fun stuff like injecting clones with mutated viruses and you get paid.

10:08 PM
@Bellerophon It's not as fun as physics though ;)

It's more fun than physics.
Physics is just a wannbe maths.

@Bellerophon pfft - you're waaaay oof

@Mithrandir24601 Most physicists can't even spell simple words like off.

@Bellerophon it was a reference to the memory of the one who was lost thanks to the smiting of the @James who is Steward of WB, Crusher of Dreams, Lord of The Factory Floor, First of his name
... and snorter of beverages
