Is HyperTalk related to HyperText?

Sort of. Its part of HyperCard, which was a pre-WWW hypermedia system.
Both it and the WWW borrow ideas from Project Xanadu.

So it's very old.
Anyway, I have to go.
The beer is calling.
Bye :)

@Mien beer? We drink bears around here!

But you're a mushrooms.

hmmm a nice fluffy bear

6:03 PM
@Mien I mean, in general, that's the tradition in #TheFryingPan
/me wonders about be a mushroom s

2 years ago, i never would have thought of spending over a grand on a camera

@rfusca well, once you go pro, you get an excuse to spend more on gear :-P
@rfusca and a tax deduction!

lol yup
i've got the only lens I need for awhile and after this, there shouldn't be any big, costly gear for awhile
unless i start doing studio work with studio lights

@derobert I just showed you the pic.

@Mien Ah, but that wasn't me. But yeah, I guess each of those was a mushrooms.

6:09 PM
Well, are you here?

(Funny, checking the log, I make one silly typo, and now the whole channel drinks bears)

You should type correctly in here!
I don't know why, but typos can be funny.
I'm afraid that's a childish side of me :(

@Mien Yes, but they make cell phones pretty small. So its possible that the mushrooms you ate could have cell phones, and be on chat.SE right now. Or posting twitter updates about how they're going to give you indigestion.
Actually, something like that sounds more like Facebook material.

@derobert Real men drink bears.
Feb 14 at 19:30, by ElendilTheTall
I tend to avoid drinking bears as well
Feb 14 at 19:29, by derobert
@rumtscho from what I hear, yes, but I'm not a bear drinker myself, so no first-hand knowledge
@rumtscho somehow, we need to get a blog post titled "Real men drink bears".

Hmm I didn't know native speakers made that mistake too.
I do it as well, but I don't know why.

@Cerberus Probably because English has no rhyme or reason behind using -eer vs. -ear

6:19 PM
Yeah.

bier = beer; beer = bear

tear, sear, rear, pear, year, beer...
(wtff)

first is Dutch, second English

Actually most *ear*s may be /iə/ rather than /ɛ/.

I really have to go now
but I ate too much garlic to appear in public
Ah well, not my problem I guess :p
Bye!!

6:21 PM
Bye!
Garlic is nice.

year and beer are definitely the same. I've now stared at the rest so long that I don't know if they're actually words or not.
tear is special! its said both ways!
Someone, quick, take English out back and shoot it.

Yeah exactly, ea is one of the weirdest digraphs in the English language.

don't tear the bare bear in half on the scale without hitting tare first, it may get a tear in its eyes and drink a beer, said the seer.
oops, lost a word in there.
even better now.

@derobert a bare bear? Is that a shaved bear?

@derobert Haha nice.
Do you know The Chaos?

6:26 PM
@Cerberus I know her, she's my dad's girlfriend

@Cerberus yeah, though I didn't remember the title

@rumtscho Oh, dear. Then their house must be a mess?

@Cerberus They don't live together, and I haven't been to her house. But actually, she isn't that much of a chaos. More of an emotional tornado.

@rumtscho No idea. When's the last time anything a seer said made sense?

@rumtscho Oh, hmm...I take it you're not a huge fan?

6:29 PM
@Cerberus I like her. I just meant that there is always something happening around her.

Oh OK.

anthony@Zia:~$ egrep '^.((e[ea]r)|(are))$' /usr/share/dict/words | tr '\n' ' ' | fmt
Dare Lear Ware bare bear beer care dare dear deer fare fear gear hare
hear jeer leer mare near pare pear peer rare rear sear seer tare tear
veer ware wear weer year
... have fun!
Past time for lunch. I should go.

Eek!
Bye!

2 hours later…
8:30 PM
@derobert, I'm not waiting on you for a review. Remind me again of the posting schedule for Ratio and TFB?

8:43 PM
@yossarian First draft for Ratio Jun 27 (go live Jul 4)
@yossarian We haven't scheduled TFB yet; next spot is Jul25/Aug1
@yossarian email cooking.se.blog@gmail.com and I can share the calendar with you
(its a Google calendar)
@yossarian or of course you could post your email address here, but I assume you don't want it in the chat log...

I've emailed you multiple times already.
:D

@yossarian right, you have, I'll use that email address
@yossarian OK, its shared with you. I suppose it sends you email. Not sure how that works.

9:02 PM
@derobert if you guys still have a lot of interest in the blog, you really should consider updating more often
once every couple weeks is....not a lot.

@Laura Well, we would, if we had more content to post :-(
@Laura we probably need to get more short articles, instead of the 1000+ word ones we've been posting
or at least in addition to them

yes, that's exactly what i was going to say
not every post has to be an in-depth book review or big science experiment
i may write one - my CSA just started last week, so i can write something about cooking with local and seasonal food

Ok, that'll be interesting. Best do it before @rumtscho comes back and makes it longer :-P

haha

9:07 PM
@derobert yup
scurries off to add her topic to the list
also, there are more than 30 answers to that question
you can't tell me that you're hurting for content :P

@Laura hah, if you actually want to claim it, there is a different post for that

got it.
my advice would be: 1-2 posts per week is a good goal to shoot for. they do not all have to be super long and involved; there are a gazillion studies showing that regularly updating content is by far the most important part of building a blog audience.

@Laura its been somewhat hard getting posts.
I have no idea how we'd pull off 1–2 per week.

in what way? there are plenty of ideas on that list
is it that people don't actually write them?
or the editorial process is too long?
or are there technical difficulties?
what's the holdup?

No one to write them.
I think we've got the editing down, between @rumtscho and I (but it does take a while for those long posts, but that's just because they're long)

9:13 PM
hmmm....
i count at least five users who posted ideas to meta.cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/1408/…
that's 1-2 posts per month per person

@Laura oh, if you look at meta.cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/1438/… its even worse

@derobert ok, so 12 users
start harassing them :P
(i'm not criticizing...i know everyone's busy and with summer weather arriving, no one wants to spend their free time at a computer)
but...you should hold people somewhat responsible for their meta posts

@Laura we have pestered them, but I guess its time for another round. We can keep at it, at least until they take out restraining orders.

haha

@laura I'm writing a post this weekend for cooking, on my pressure cooker hack
it won't be long and involved

9:17 PM
@rfusca but you have a legitimate excuse!
:P

@laura did you see the doctoral thesis the jrista posted on photo's blog?

hahaha yes, i did
it's...long

i had no idea that he was doing that
he just pops in and is like 'btw, i just posted this'

ha
that's interesting

i want to discourage ones that long
its just daunting to tackle

9:19 PM
yes
also

I promise to hit 'unpublish' if anyone posts something that un-edited to cooking.blogoverflow

i'm going to do a post on photo next weekend on my move from smugmug to photodeck

oooh, interesting
i will read that one

well i'm off
ciao!
@laura did you see my site redesign for my business? spottsphoto.com

@Laura OK, I'm adding comments to these replies on meta, that ought to ping them.
I wish there were a better way to do this pinging. Well, at least without @rumtscho forgetting its the middle of the night over there.
Actually, is there an easy way to know who I can ping in chat? I'm pretty sure its possible to ping people who no longer tab-complete.

9:27 PM
i'm not sure if you can but what happens when you do a double @@ for me it brings up a menu to ping other folks
but it might be a mod thing

@rfusca yes, that's mod super-ping
@Mien I know you're pingable here. Care to write a blog post sometime soon? Something about those baked sweets known only to famous detectives with mustaches? We'll take much shorter posts than the ones @rumtscho and I wrote! The StachExchange Overlords insist!

@rumtscho- it doesn't seem to me that the snails question belongs here.
I think it should have stayed in outdoors.
It is not asking how to make them good- just how to cook them quickly with a campfire.
It is much more likely to get an answer from a survivalist than from a cook.

@Sobachatina link?

Q: How to quickly prepare snails?

lechlukaszHow to quickly prepare fresh snails? I've heard snails must be soaked in salted water for a few hours in order to remove the mucus but a friend of mine suggested that the ones in shells can be simply thrown into the hot ash and after a dozen of minutes they can be taken off the shell and eaten. ...

@Sobachatina hmmm, first off, they sent it to us, I believe. So we can't send it back—they've already decided its off-topic on their community.
And I guess its on-topic here, so...
@Sobachatina @rumtscho Its also not like "how do I cook this quickly" is a weird question for a chef. I mean, its a big concern in a restaurant setting, right? Most chefs of course would use a sauté pan, but, you can do that over a campfire, too...

9:51 PM
I suppose so... I just don't see it getting a good answer. We'll see.

There is also:

Q: Would boiling make escargot safe if they were carrying parasites or bacteria?

logicbirdI've read that escargot can be a carrier of parasites (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) or bacteria that can lead to meningitis. I assume there are no visible signs if they are in fact carriers. Will the boiling process make escargot safe to eat if they are? I assume it's just a matter of time and te...

@Sobachatina they didn't even ask before sending it
@laura I agree about the frequency, but we simply have nobody to write
We decided that we will urge people to write, and once we build up a backlog of posts waiting to go live, we can move to a one-week-schedule
But currently, we are really doing it fortnight-to-fortnight. The only reason why we have a post for the slot after next is that we had planned three book reviews in one and then broke up that post, so that part two is coming in later

10:12 PM
@rumtscho I pinged people by adding comments. Hopefully replies will arrive.

1 hour later…
11:36 PM
@derobert I'd like to write a blog post, but I can't think of a good idea.
I'm working on the multiple site comparison, but it will take a long time before I have something writable.
Is there something specific you want me to do?
What baked sweets does Poirot know that you don't?
@important people, I would like to see just simple but good recipes. But I'm about the only one.
Where is everybody? :P

Hello.
Which important people did you have in mind?

I was thinking about people from seasoned advice.
Or do you consider yourself important?

<no>
So where do you want to see these simple recipes?

11:55 PM
On the blog.

Ahh OK.
