well, I doubt that can really be shown (last I heard, the answer from research on the subject was "no"), but, well, it's not like you need to find all people you'd be happy with. (Well, actually, I don't know how robot dating works)

How robot dating works? We go to the "Bodyworlds" exhibition (the dead plastinated bodies one) and marvel at the elegance of the engineering solutions within humans. (A real example).

ah, but then do you look at the appendix and snicker?

Jay
They calculate the enemy based on the Answers you'll accept from the other people AND how important it is to you. If its not important and the answers don't match then it doesnt matter. if you choose the mandatory important option for a question and the answers dont match, then you are gonna have enemy points added

@derobert that happens too.

Jay
so immature :)

7:05 PM
Or we are in the pregnancy room, and he says "I'm glad I'll never have to go through that" and I give him an evil look.
@Jay I think you maybe were immature enough to misconstrue the reason for snickering at the appendix (or did you do that on purpose?)

Jay
stop asking me hard questions.

@rumtscho wait, robots get pregnant?

Jay
@derobert Robots reproduce asexually

Yes, but I'm pretty sure they reproduce on an assembly line

Jay
@derobert, have you seen stargate?

7:09 PM
@Jay original movie a long time ago, and some of the later followup series

Jay
in the series, there are robots called replicators
that can reproduce asexuality
They convert the metal around them into material that can be reconstructed into more replicators
hence the name

@Jay I think I've seen one of those episodes, been a while

Jay
I imagine @rumtscho reproduces something like that

That's possible. But then why does she give her bf the evil glare when he's glad he doesn't get pregnant?

@Jay I have luckily not reproduced yet, so that remains to be seen

Jay
7:12 PM
@rumtscho Do you actually want children eventually?

@rumtscho well, if Jay's wrong about that, watch out as Foxconn may have to build an entire assembly line inside you

@Jay Haven't decided yet

Jay
Hmmm you two are about the same age. i'm gonna breed you two. i wonder what i would get when i cross robot with mushrooms

I suspect I assume I will have them, just because it is usual for people to have them. But I haven't ever felt a strong maternal instinct.
@Jay psst I'm autonomous and don't react well to people trying to breed me.
Ask my grandmother if you don't believe me.

@Jay /me doesn't think spores grow to well on metal.

Jay
7:15 PM
@rumtscho Shush, only I am real and thus I create all around me thus, I can coerce anyone to do anything i want

@derobert you've worked with sourdough yes?

@Jay well, you can try, but if your psychosis is strong enough, you may not succeed in controlling us

@derobert sadly, the green fuzzy stuff in my fridge disagrees. You must not know it well enough after all.

@ElendilTheTall yeah, though I don't currently have a starter

what should the starter smell like after a few days?

7:16 PM
@rumtscho oh, well, that's a different mold than I am, mine don't grow so well on metal

Jay
@ElendilTheTall bready with a slight hint of sour
mine smells almost "sweet"

hmmmmm

@derobert wait, I thought you were a mushroom, not a mold.

mine smells very sour, almost vomit like

Jay
mushroom and mold are all fungi

7:17 PM
@Jay I wouldn't go around giving people advice how starter should smell like based on your experiment

Jay
@rumtscho I mean he said after a couple of days which is how long my starter was alive for

@rfusca Thanks man! Glad you like it. I'm about due for a batch myself.

@Jay computer science students and swineherds are all humans, which doesn't make you a swineherd.

@ElendilTheTall it should become less offensive after a few days, as hopefully the right bacteria take over...

@Jay but have you determined when it went down the wrong path? It could have started much earlier, long before you saw the results

7:19 PM
It's about 4 days old + 5 in the fridge

@rumtscho yeah, I'm a mushroom, but we're all fungi and sometimes aren't so particular with labels :-)

Jay
@rumtscho I dont think i've heard of the word swine herd but i assume its someone who herds pigs?

it's a good colour, pale beige, no blue or green

Hello @MichaelatHerbivoracious

A swineherd () is a person who looks after pigs. The term has fallen out of popular use in favour of pig farmer. Swineherds in literature * Hans Christian Andersen wrote a Fairy tale called, "The Swineherd". * In Greek mythology, Eumaeus (or Eumaios) was Odysseus' swineherd before he left for the Trojan War. * In the Parable of the Prodigal Son, the younger son wastes his inheritance and eventually has to become a swineherd. * In Lloyd Alexander's books based on Welsh mythology, The Chronicles of Prydain, the hero is a pig keeper, or swineherd. * The character Gurth, in Sir Walter Sco...

Jay
7:20 PM
@rumtscho oh it was bubbling and quite active and alive on sunday
I think i was supposeto pour out the alcohol and then feed it again
instead I mixed the alcohol back into together and fed it

@Jay maybe it was active producing suicidal amounts of alcohol?

Jay
and it stopped bubbling/rising afterwards

@ElendilTheTall I'd feed it a few more times, and see if you can get the correct bacteria to grow. I had that happen to one of my starters (back when I had one...), and it recovered.

Jay
@rumtscho maybe
starting a starter uses surprising amount of flour

@derobert will do. I'm getting a layer of brownish liquid above the gloopy mass, is that normal?

7:22 PM
@derobert maybe seeding with benevolent bacteria can help? like throwing a tsp of yogurt into it?

@ElendilTheTall yeah, just pour the liquid off. Should smell of alcohol.

@ElendilTheTall HOOOCH!

Ah, I've just been stirring it in

@MichaelatHerbivoracious If you hadn't noticed I thought you should be made aware of the vegetarian contest this week.

Jay
@derobert yea i made the mistake of just mixing that liquid back in

7:23 PM
a little is fine, too much will kill it
just ask @Jay ;)

>.<
doh
think I've done that a couple of times
well, I've just fed it after taking out of the fridge, we'll see if it bounces back

A little should actually help with getting rid of the wrong bacteria, if you're getting a lot, you probably need to feed more often

Jay
There is about a cup of alcohol in my starter lol. i cant decide whether or not to experiment/drink it just for fun

@Jay I've read a lot of descriptions of sourdough starters and never once read that it has to be poured off.

If getting a starter right is so hard, why don't you people start 3-4 batches at once and see which lives?

7:24 PM
Always the wording is "You can mix it back in or pour it off if you find it objectionable"

@ElendilTheTall its generally fine to leave in if you're regularly using your starter. But if its been on overdrive and you're not using it and it builds up A LOT, it can damage

@rumtscho I've started two before, and never had it fail (except when I failed to feed it for too long)

Jay
@ElendilTheTall You know what i meant ><

@rumtscho I started another one last week the day after Jay and make a batch of bread last night :)

@Jay Given that you live in America, it could turn out to not be worse than the beer in your supermarket.

7:25 PM
Hooch is the nastiest stuff alive

Jay
@rumtscho Missie, stop with your condension of american beer. It's not THAT bad

so when the smell improves and gets 'sweeter' it should be ready to use?
@jay condescension - it means talking down to someone
;)

@Jay have you ever had better one?

@rumtscho I have a coworker that is a local judge for home brewed and micro brewery beers. I know little about beer but apparently there is no shortage of good beers- they just aren't the big, national brands.

@ElendilTheTall yup, it should smell good, and be bubbling

7:26 PM
@ElendilTheTall yes, though you may need to take it through a couple of feedings after that before it has plenty of leavening power. You can still bake with it before that—it'll just need you to either wait a long time (and you might get very sour bread) or add some commercial yeast

It's been bubbling since about day 3

@ElendilTheTall Perhaps he meant "distillation" not "condension".

then technically you could start using it then, it just wouldn't be very sour or strong

Jay
@rfusca mine was quite bubbly at day 3 also

it has also been smelling vomity since day 3...

7:28 PM
@Sobachatina I've heard that too, but a) that's why I limited it to "your local supermarket), b) I don't know how high the chance is that jay has tasted these instead of the big brands, and 3) national pride often wins in such situation where a more impartial person will notice that the product in question is nothing special.

Jay
@ElendilTheTall what flour did you start out with again?

I also start with Rye flour, much easier

@rumtscho wait, my local supermarkets actually carry some of the small microbrews.

Jay
@rfusca i might buy some rye bread just for making the starter

@jay just strong white bread flour
this looks like a good clear tutorial sourdough.com/blog/sourdom/beginners-blog-starter-scratch

7:29 PM
@derobert nice to hear that. are they good?

Jay
2.5hr before i can go home... i hope i dont fall asleep driving home today

my starter doesn't look like his

@rumtscho from what I hear, yes, but I'm not a bear drinker myself, so no first-hand knowledge

mine generally does, a bit looser and more rye like, but generally like that

I tend to avoid drinking bears as well

7:30 PM
i prefer a loose starter, its less tangy

@derobert Real men drink bears.
3

@Jay seriously, is there no other way to get home tonight? No co-worker who would take you, or public transportation, even if it needs three times as long? I wouldn't trust myself to drive 30 miles after 36 hours no sleep.

I used to drink bears, but the claws were just really hard to down and the dang bears just didn't like it

Jay
Hmmm thats what mine loooked like on the top but then on the bottom layer was my hooch. and i mxed it all together and got a weird goopy mixture and thats when it all went downhill

@Jay why have you had 36 hours sleepless?

7:31 PM
I'll see how this one goes this week and maybe start again if it seems bad

Jay
@rumtscho thanks for worrying but I'll be fine. If i really find it hard to stay awake, ill just open the window and blast really loud music

@ElendilTheTall thankfully, all the ingredients are pretty cheap

indeed
<has visions of jay blasting Brahm's Lullaby really loud>

@rfusca My favorite quote from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: "What’s so unpleasant about being drunk? You ask a glass of water.”

Jay
@derobert because i am an idiot with no self control whatsoever and stayed up all night to watch a new tv series i got into

7:32 PM
It is not only about falling asleep, it is bad concentration while feeling awake.

@Sobachatina lol
@Jay what series?

@rumtscho you are forgetting that American roads have a corner every 54 miles on average
hence American cars with terrible handling

@Jay My little pony.

Jay
@rfusca Its a sitcom called Happy Endings

ic

7:33 PM
@ElendilTheTall also, when you started the starter, did you start with something acidic? Like fruit juice?

Jay
It's a little bit like friends except there are 6 people

no, just water, flour and yeast from the air

@ElendilTheTall I won't stand up for most American cars as I prefer Hondas- but that 54 mile average could only make sense if you include vast interstate roads where people don't regularly drive.

Last time I went without sleep and went home (3 km on a bike), I had 3-4 near misses on the road (I am talking about a city with bicycle lanes all the way and real bicycle culture, generally no problem at all)

@rumtscho Thankfully cars stay upright if you doze off.

7:35 PM
@Sobachatina 76% of statistics are made up on the spot

Jay
@Sobachatina but they dont drive straight if you dont steer... lol

@Jay They do for a little bit.

@ElendilTheTall if you have to start over, I'd try one of those—the acidity helps keep the other bacteria out.

@Sobachatina It wasn't losing my balance, it was not noticing a red light or misjudging other cyclists' velocity.

@rumtscho I don't usually laugh at other people's misfortunes but there would be something hilarious about two cyclists colliding at night.

Jay
7:36 PM
I've gone over 50 hours without sleep before so i'll be fine

Jay
brb, gonna refill my coffee

i haven't discarded any yet

@ElendilTheTall you may want to start discarding half when you feed
@ElendilTheTall or even more than half, to try and get rid of the unwanted guests
also, how warm is it? If you keep it too warm, that encourages some of those unwanted guests

Jay
omfg... i just check my okcupid and i've gotten two more messages... from scary black men. wtf... i am so tired of this. Can someone who do not frighten me please go out on a date with me. >>

7:40 PM
@ElendilTheTall oh ya, you need to discard
discarding is an important part of the care

well, at least unless you want an ever-growing starter
(once your starter is ready, of course, the discarded half isn't discarded, its used for baking instead)

Jay
at this point i almost sound racist but I seriously do not want to date a black man and I dont get messages from anybody but people of that demographic... let me count how many consecutive messages Ive gotten from a black man

hmmmm, should I discard some now or before the next feed?
Or should I just start again?

@ElendilTheTall i'd discard a pretty hefty amount and feed it

Jay
my starter was exactly 2 cup water and 2 cup flour

7:43 PM
I've just fed it - discard and feed again?

Jay
i pour out half each time and put back in 1 cup flour and 1 water

@Jay that sounds right - was it in a really warm place

sod it, I'm just going to start again I think, using sourdough.com/blog/sourdom/beginners-blog-starter-scratch

Jay
@rfusca my house is freezing(about 50 F) so i put it near my space heater and gave it about 70F

70F should be fine

7:44 PM
i have some rye flour somewhere

Jay
@ElendilTheTall i sprout rye between my toes and make my own rye flour :)

@jay and you wonder why you can't get a date?

@Jay Well, I guess we're closer to figuring out what you are. A rye, apparently.

Jay
Oh I can get a date... just not with people i want to go on the dates with

@rfusca apropos of nothing, I have an electronics question for you

Jay
7:46 PM
@derobert just because i sprout rye between my toe does not make me a rye plant

since baby came along, the wife has been sitting in the back of the car

Jay
i could just mean i dont clean between my toes

@ElendilTheTall Let her out!

I obviously face forward which means if I talk she can't hear me very well

Jay
@Sobachatina Yea its unethical to lock your wife in the back of your car!

7:47 PM
@jay when I look at my messages, I have about one per page from somebody I would like to know (as in, I would be interested in meeting him, if he didn't live so far away and I didn't already have more suitors than I can comfortably handle). So how many are there per page? 30?

I want to rig up a simple intercom - a mic mounted on the dash or somewhere with a little speaker in the back so she can hear
I'm thinking all I need is a mic, a battery, a switch (to avoid draining the battery) a speaker and some wire - correct?

Jay
@ElendilTheTall or cannibalise the baby monitor

baby monitor runs off the mains
:P

@ElendilTheTall Your car have a tape deck or audio input for an MP3 player?

or a walkie-talkie

7:48 PM
tape deck

Just get a tape adapter and plug a mic into it then- use the car's sound system.

of course, then you couldn't listen to the radio

This is true.

you can get those?
I can just switch from the radio to the tape deck

7:49 PM
yep, I've used one before to hook a MP3 player to a car

Jay
@rumtscho I counted and I've gotten about 20 messages from black men in the last 2 weeks. And 2 messages from really really unattractive white men

It's not like we talk constantly :)

Jay
@Sobachatina I need to get a new one

Ok, but that has a jack for going into an 'out' source

Jay
7:50 PM
my makes clackity noises when i put it in

it doesn't have a jack for plugging a mike into
also, does the mic not need power?

True - you would also need a female-female adapter.

Jay
@Sobachatina oh baby :)

Most mics don't need power- high end mics do but that isn't what you would want here anyway.

iiiiiinteresting
I can also grace her with my angelic singing voice

7:52 PM
Ummm, mics that don't need power generally don't output line-level
You probably will need a mic that has its own batteries, to output line-level\

@ElendilTheTall For that you probably want this:

@Jay why don't you send messages to moderately attractive white men yourself? OK, to attractive ones too, but they will be very picky.

Hey, my voice is a combination of Fergie and Jesus

Jay
@rumtscho I might just switch modes and start messaging girls

@derobert I agree with this but it would still work- you would just have to turn up the volume for the mic (and remember to turn it back down before you switched back to radio)

Jay
7:54 PM
i dont know who is more shallow/fickle, gay guys or girls

@Jay I have no idea who is more picky, attractive girls or attractive gay men

@Sobachatina maybe it'd work, mic-level is much lower than line level

why shallow/fickle now?

I think you can get pretty cheap line-level mics, or alternatively you could use a mic preamp.

Jay
Well considering i haven't used okcupid to meet girls yet, it'll be like a fresh slate in a sense. All i have to do is switch my sexual orientation option

7:56 PM
@jay you're bi?

Jay
@ElendilTheTall double the flavour, double the fun, be bisexual and love everyone

greedy I call it! ;)

Jay
@ElendilTheTall Can hardly control it lol

http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/10856/pineapple-juice-solution-part-1
http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/10901/pineapple-juice-solution-part-2

Hmmm, I have no pineapple juice
I wonder if cream of tartar would have the same effect
tartaric acid essentially

Jay
7:59 PM
@ElendilTheTall ive used cream of tartar before but what is it exactly
oh nvm

@ElendilTheTall that first article mentions it, takes way too much
@ElendilTheTall but if you read through, it sounds like you can just wait it out
@Jay also, that article says that maybe you shouldn't have discarded your starter...
