Personally hate the app. Typing this in android chrome version of site which is far better

9 hours later…
09:00
Hi everybody
@SAJ14SAJ Do you like me?
Good morning.
Morning, euro-chums
How're things in sunny Lowlandia?
09:24
You have been annexed by the Continent, you know.
And it is no sunnier here than on your island!
09:42
@SAJ14SAJ @derobert @rfusca America, say goodbye to your Feta, and hello to White Cheese Blocks! Most feta is actually sold in my country as "white cheese blocks" because of the EU.
> As part of trade talks, the European Union wants to ban the use of European names like parmesan, feta and gruyere on cheese made in the United States.

The argument is that the American-made cheeses are shadows of the original European varieties and cut into sales and identity of the European cheeses. The Europeans say parmesan should only come from Parma, Italy, not those familiar green cylinders that American companies sell. Feta should only be from Greece, even though feta isn't a place. The EU argues it "is so closely connected to Greece as to be identified as an inherently Greek prod
It's so hilarious and yet painful that it hurts.
I don't think that Will happen
@Mien sure. Everyone likes you
Are you feeling insecure?
@Cerberus also american consumers can distinguish origin when it is relevant to quality
No one confuses kraft crap in a can with genuine parmesan
@SAJ14SAJ It won't.
Typing on nexus is hard
@SAJ14SAJ Of course.
Yay Nexus!
I'm so glad Derobert and Jefromi and I have turned you to the right side.
I bought it to play games.
09:56
But you didn't buy an Apple thing.
And otherwise entertain my self when I was in the hotel
No more apple things for me. Don't like the closed garden
Oh, and apples will be restricted to the area in France where presumably the first apple trees were grown in the 5th millennium BC.
The company Apple will have to change its name. Perhaps Opple will be nice? Aaaapple?
@SAJ14SAJ Always, I'm a girl!
The garden in France will be very closed!
My sansaire is in the right country :P
09:57
Of course. And no more turkey or potatoes or tomatoes allowed in eorope
@Mien Do they sell feta as "witte kaasblokjes"?
Nope :P
@Mien bellaruse?
they sell feta as feta
@SAJ14SAJ Hey, now, it doesn't work both ways!
09:58
@SAJ14SAJ Belgium, tyvm :P
Chocolate will only be sold in south america
@SAJ14SAJ We get to forbid your shops from selling parmesan, while in return you get to forbid us from using any machine, device, software, or anything that ought be patentable but is.
Perhaps this is just a sign that all govt is insane inherently
Hi mein. We like you
We get to censor any reference to WW2 whatsoever in your country; in return, you get to close down any video or file service here, and the Internet.
@SAJ14SAJ Yeah, kind of.
I don't get the WWII thing?
10:00
Any kind of government where heavy lobbying is at work.
@SAJ14SAJ We have more censorship about that.
In Holland, for example, selling Mein Kampf is forbidden.
In Germany, you can probably not say "person x is like Hitler" in public. I don't know the details, but it's something ridiculous.
(The situation in Holland is that the government usurped the copyright on Mein Kampf here, so that's how they theoretically enforce it. In practice, you can buy Mein Kampf if you like. And, remember, punishments are mild here, so this would probably be a fine of € 100 or so if any.)
Hmm
I never wanted to read it
In practice, I don't think anyone has ever been fined for it.
My father has a copy.
It's not very readable, badly written, of course.
Hitler was not a gifted writer.
Now the revisionist history in Japan is much worse. Did you know they were not the aggressors in the region but the victims. And did not invade Korea
10:05
They didn't?
Hitler was a nutjob
@Cerberus lol ok?
@rfusca Yeah just so you know!
I am sure that is something g like nuutjoeb in dutch
thanks...
10:05
Hehe.
@Cerberus course not
@SAJ14SAJ Nutjob is an expression peculiar to English. We have nothing with nuts and crazy.
Rawherringjob then
There is no easy way to do s!ily on nexus
We have halve gare (untranslatable), idioot, gek (crazy), geschift (shifted?), gestoord (disturbed)...
Haha.
To do what?
Emilie. Or may e there is. It keeps badly correcting me
Smilie
@waxeagle Hi wax
10:09
Oh.
You shouldn't type smileys anyway, you're an adult!
ug, i couldn't sleep. I bought a new camera and my mind is just too busy!
That sucks.
I woke up after 6 hours too.
i did not sleep one minute :/
But the new camera sounds like it is at least a fun reason why you couldn't sleep.
Ow.
That's short.
@Cerberus can you tell when I am joking?
10:10
In those situations, a calming pill works.
@SAJ14SAJ Sure.
But the rawherringjob was serious.
@Cerberus yup!
I need to make coffee
Oh, this room is active!
@rfusca You put it on your night stand, didn't you?
@Mien Very.
@SAJ14SAJ Cool :D
10:11
@Cerberus no, it hasn't come in yet even lol
@Mien and we like you
@Mien We are graced with American insomniacs.
@rfusca Oh, dear! Then the future looks worrying hehe.
@Cerberus lol
but, now I'm off to work!
Its morning now. Time to get up and get ready for work
OK adios!
@SAJ14SAJ Isn't it like 6 am?
10:12
Must... Feed... Kitties...
Aww.
@Cerberus yes
That's early to get up.
@SAJ14SAJ I like you too :)
I think people in your country live farther away from work?
Of course many people here also have to drive for an hour or more, but most don't.
10:14
@Cerberus How long does it take you?
Depends. Iam 2. Miles now
@SAJ14SAJ And how do you go?
oh, by taxi, right?
Sure.
@Mien By bike, about 15 minutes to work A, 5 minutes to work B and C. You?
@SAJ14SAJ 2 miles? That's not far. So what time do you start?
you have three jobs? :o
10:15
My cat is using his mind control power of cuteness to get me to feed him
@Mien More, even, depends on how you count! But only two that I normally have to be at a specific place for.
@SAJ14SAJ Cats are the most powerful psycocinetes even to have lived on this earth.
Or what are they, psycarchs? Psycocrats?
Psycocats!
Psychokitty quesque c'esf
@Cerberus What do you do then?
@Cerberus If I'm lucky, 30 minutes, if not 60 minutes or more. Usually it's 45-50 minutes.
Many things! Paleography, teaching Latin and Greek, tutoring in academic writing, managing a digital archive...
I go by bike (10 minutes), then train (10-15 min), then tram (10 min) and 2 min walk :P
10:19
Ah.
So where do you work?
You live in Gent, right?
nope
Ohh.
I moved in September :P
Wetteren
It was near Gent.
true
10:20
Right.
So you travel to Gent every day?
10:37
Paleography?
Palaeography or palæography, also spelled paleography (from Greek palaiós, "old" and graphein, "to write"), is the study of ancient writing. Included in the discipline is the practice of deciphering, reading, and dating historical manuscripts, and the cultural context of writing, including the methods with which writing and books were produced, and the history of scriptoria. Application Palaeography can be an essential skill for historians and philologists, as it tackles two main difficulties. First, since the style of a single alphabet in each given language has evolved constantly, ...
How do you get paid for that?
How?
People need transcriptions, so they pay us.
We also do translations out of Latin or Italian and such.
Yes how who pays you and why
Because they need transcriptions?
Not sure what you mean.
10:44
@Cerberus Yes
I am trying to figure out how you turn an obscure academic discipline into a marketable skill
There are plenty of people and institutions that need transcriptions done, why wouldn't there be?
We don't get nearly enough jobs to live off, if that's what you mean.
Because no business is done, by definition, in paleawriting? Because graduate student labor is plentiful and cheap?
This isn't about business.
And not many people can do what we can do.
Ah... so how do you earn your rent money, then?
10:51
As I said, I have several different jobs.
Are you one of those infamous amsterdam tulip and ganja sellers? :-)
What?
Yes, which made me infer the peleawriting thing was one of them to earn a living... and back to me wondering how you make it profitable.
@rumtscho Hi Roomy Rummi Rumi Tsokins
I think I'm missing some context here, because I really don't understand what it is you want to know haha.
I have coffee! First time I have made it in ages!
10:54
Congrats.
mmmmmm coffee <3
Mmm tea.
Its really good. It is Peetes. Its complex and not overly roasted.
@Cerberus Eeeew
I like the smell of coffee, as long as it's not in anything I consume.
Everyone knows water soaked through fermented seeds of tropical trees is far better than water soaked through spoiled asian leaves.
10:56
You mean pooped-out seeds.
@Cerberus No, that is just stupid.
You're basically drinking poop. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you.
They say the best coffee is pooped out.
And from everything I have read, not even good coffee.
They are wrong.
raises eyebrows
@Cerberus Ha! Dogs haven't got eyebrows.
10:59
> Although kopi luwak is a form of processing rather than a variety of coffee, it has been called the most expensive coffee in the world with retail prices reaching €550 / US$700 per kilogramme.[8] The price paid to collectors in the Philippines is closer to US$20 per kilogramme.[1] The price of farmed (considered low-grade by connoisseurs) kopi luwak in large Indonesian supermarkets is from US$100 per kilogramme (five times the price of a high quality local arabica coffee).
There are conniseurs of almost anything, who make those things expensive. It doesn't mean they are objectively good, or popular in the mainstream.
Uhuh.
Still, it is a nice retort to have on hand.
From same wiki article:
> n the coffee industry kopi luwak is widely regarded as a gimmick or novelty item.[12] The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) states that there is a "general consensus within the industry ... it just tastes bad".
Haha.
Imagine hysteria like that takes over the world... and you get the tea industry :-)
11:02
Not sure this association should have the last word, though...
What about the tea industry?
@Cerberus I don't propose to spend a fortune to try it, but that is far from the only reference easily findable about how poor this type of coffee is.
I'm not sure I feel that extremely expensive teas taste better than decent teas in the middle segment, but there is in general a high variety in quality between different teas.
Yes, poor, bad, worse, and horrific.
:-)
Pff.
11:05
What is that?
Iced tea?
Worse... instant powdered iced tea.
Scraping the bottom of the barrel that is tea.
I'm sure industrial iced tea is also made from powders...
Not that the whole barrel isn't fetid and nasty.
11:06
Do you also dislike white tea?
This product is probably singlularly responsible for my complete hatred of tea.
I don't know what white tea is.
It is barely oxidised.
Would it not then be sort of green or light brownish?
@SAJ14SAJ Huh, but iced tea is nothing like actual tea.
@SAJ14SAJ It's just a name.
@Cerberus I am sure it bears exactly the same relationship to tea as iced coffee does to coffee, and iiced coffee is just coffee served in another manner.
Southerrs who like the stuff tend to brew their tea for iced tea, often a cold brew.
@rfusca Do you drink sweet tea?
I guess I have no opnion on white tea. I have spent the last 40 years or so not drinking any tea, on the grounds that it is nasty.
11:11
No to sweet tea
@rfusca Are you sure you are a southerner?
When I first went to Atlanta, among the culture shock items were being addressed as Honey by all waitresses, learning that "sweettea" is one word, and trying to find addresses on Peachtree street.
@SAJ14SAJ Iced tea tasted nothing like real tea, and the hot aspect is crucial, too.
@rfusca I agree.
@Cerberus That doesn't make sense.... if you brew the tea, and then chill it, why is i it so different?
11:34
@SAJ14SAJ You use low-quality tea; you add lots of sugar and other additives; you cool it.
Those are extremely important differences.
I don't know that the low quality part is essential. Sugar certainly is not
What other additives??
Lemon.
Mint.
You can put anything in iced tea.
It is more like a fizzy drink (with or without the fizz) that also contains tea.
@SAJ14SAJ born a northerner :)
People put those things and more in hot tea, as well. What is it that is in Earl Grey exactly?
@rfusca Oh my.... did they make you buy a gun rack yet? :-)
@SAJ14SAJ lol
11:49
@SAJ14SAJ Look, just think about it. I don't think it is efficient if I explain all this.
I think you are just a hot tea snob. I am down with food snobbery of course, but that is what I am hearing :-) I am a coffee and chocolate snob myself.
Why am I a hot tea snob?
I know I'm hot.
Because you like what you like, and rejecting iced tea for no actual rational reason other than not being partial to it.
Unless you meant hot-tea snob.
Rejecting iced tea?
You may have a hyphen if it makes you happier :-)
11:52
I like iced tea.
You're shooting at ghosts.
It's just that normal iced tea is nothing like normal hot tea.
You could make a tea infused tart!
For starters, black tea is traditionally drunk with milk in the West.
Make the custard with tea leaves!
I have heard of tea-flavoured confections, but it sounds unappealing.
@Cerberus Is it then? i am not up on tea rituals.
11:55
They have to be really bland for you to taste the tea.
@Cerberus Well, custard is not known for being an overpowering flavor.
@SAJ14SAJ Okay, then just trust me: normal hot tea is nothing like normal iced tea.
@SAJ14SAJ So then that doesn't sound good to me.
I may have eaten something like that, with tea-flavoured custard.
I think I have.
It would be good with coffee.
It was not memorable.
Haha.
I wonder if I can find a coffee muffin recipe. But it would probably use instant espresso powder.
Search results are not promising.
12:08
I like tea!
CI has a mocha chip muffin recipe, using espresso powder.
But I also like the fruit 'tea' stuff :P
@Mien Its okay, I still like you :-)
@SAJ14SAJ google laura vitale, she uses the stuff a lot
Well, she seems to have some muffins and quickbreads featured prominently.
12:10
@SAJ14SAJ heya
Whats going on Wax?
@Mien Oh my god, that voice. Ouchies.
@SAJ14SAJ not much, just got to work, boss managed to get himself hospitalized so I'm flying solo today
@waxeagle I hope he or she is okay.
ARe you now running amok?
@SAJ14SAJ seems he managed to pick up malaria, so now that they've figured out the diagnosis he should be able to be treated
Has he recently left the US?
12:12
@SAJ14SAJ nah, though I've got a full plate it seems
@SAJ14SAJ True :P but you get used to it. I like most of her recipes though :)
@waxeagle Do I recall you are some sort of DBA?
@SAJ14SAJ his last trip home was in December/January
@SAJ14SAJ full stack webdev
hi @waxeagle
12:14
@waxeagle Cool, what technology are you using? My stuff these days tends to be built with servicestack middleware, and C#, and no web server at all, just the Microsoft HttpListener.
@waxeagle Is home in AFrica?
@SAJ14SAJ MS stack, vb/asp.net/webforms/sql server
@SAJ14SAJ Ecuador
I didn't think there was extant maliaria in south america
@SAJ14SAJ honestly not sure
@waxeagle My life is far improved once I took IIS out of the equation.
I haven't had to edit a single XML file by hand in a long, long time.
@SAJ14SAJ still quite a bit in the equatorial regions, specially in the jungle and coast
12:17
Well, fortunately, I think it is treatable.
@SAJ14SAJ heh, there's a good chance we're heading to Dynamics AX sometime in the next couple of years...I'm honestly not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing
@SAJ14SAJ yep
Never heard of that.
you or anyone else. Dynamics is MS's ERP line.
We have PeopleSoft now, which makes me deal with ORacle's db. So how much worse could the MS product be? ;-)
@SAJ14SAJ their system looks really flexible with all of the good and bad that particular quality comes with
12:19
And Mcirosoft's legendary support.
No doubt.
@SAJ14SAJ all handled by a 3rd party. MS doesn't sell it directly
Yes. that is what I mean. Their support is a legend. No actual sightings.
@SAJ14SAJ lol
The CI mocha muffin uses the creaming method. Its a damn cupcake.
@Mien Haha you're crazy!
Next thing you're going to tell me you like mushrooms...
I do kind of like lemon tea, by the way.
Just not every day.
12:30
I like mushrooms, and lemon tea. But I have not tried the combination.
anyone making a pie today?
No... but now you make me want to make a pizza.
I wanted to bring one today; but I had no time yesterday eve
I might make one this evening
I'll see
I want pizza too
I always want pizza
pizza pizza pizza pizza pizza
Yes, that is how pizza makes me feel too.
What are your favorite topoings? I am a carniverous pizzavore, I like pepperoni, ham, meatballs, roasted peppers, onions....
BBQ pizza with homemade pulled pork and BBQ sauce is among my faves
12:41
@waxeagle That sounds like it could be good, but requires a superb bbq sauce. I never met a jarred one I liked.
@SAJ14SAJ homemade sauce is essential
@waxeagle Yeah, it would have to be.
or from a local BBQ joint, we like Sticky Fingers
(which is only quasi local, but still good sauce)
The only really good bbq place in my region, with some ex-texans, has been history for some time.
but when I make pulled pork, I make homeemade sauce
12:42
Which kind of sauce?
@SAJ14SAJ usually a ketchup/brown sugar base with some of the BBQ rub and a strong dose of vinegar and Worcestershire
I am partial to my pulled pork with Big Daddy's Pig Picken Juice, recipe as good as I can remember. Vinegar, sugar, some hot pepper flakes, some salt. Let it set a while.
If I've managed to catch any of the pork drippings I'll mix that in to the sauce too
That sounds like a pretty good suace, if it isn't too sweet. Some people turn the sauce into candy!
@SAJ14SAJ if it gets too sweet I add more vinegar and spice
12:47
Going to work now, backonline soon
13:08
Y'all didn't even miss me!

1 hour later…
14:23
@waxeagle Okay, sounds awesome. Recipe, NOW!
cupish of ketchup (we use store brand, comparable to Heinz), Brown sugar to taste (probably at least half a cup, though 50/50 makes a good mix here). Healthy dose of vinegar, Worcestershire to taste (this for me is a good bit, tablespoonish? and use Lea and Perrins or go home). BBQ rub is a standard BBQ Rub, I use Reichlan's http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Basic-Barbecue-Rub-242244 or whatever I put on the meat.
A Turkey baster or two of meat drippings if available for depth.
Put all of this into a sauce pan and simmer until the color is dark brown/maroon, 20-60 minutes
Ty :P
We only have one kind of W-sauce afaik :)
@Mien pretty much every store has a generic of it here, but it's one of the few things we buy a name brand of
because the off brands don't come close to the amount of flavor
We just don't have them :)
I'll try your bbq sauce recipe
but the spice mix will not be as good
and I have no idea how to get the meat drippings :P
how do you make your pork shoulder?
or if you've got some bacon grease a bit of that will give you similar flavor :)
oh and one of the secrets to the sauce is to let it simmer until it gets a dark brown color to it
15:06
I've never made a pork shoulder? At least, I think so.
@Mien oh I thought you were talking about having had carnitas recently
ah no, that was Yami
I have never eaten carnitas
@waxeagle Something I thought was impossible happened. I ordered carnitas from the local mexican place that is usually quite good. They came not crisp, kind of soggy, in a nasty sweet orangy..... liquid. I didn't think bad carnitas were possible!
Where is Yami.... she is hiding!
@SAJ14SAJ oh mai, that is bad
I dunno, haven't seen her since I stacked a huge bounty on her RPG.SE question the other day
15:25
@waxeagle Aren't you nice, giving a bounty to someone else's question.
@SAJ14SAJ I've got >20k on RPG and don't need any more than that
so I've been kicking in big bounties when I find questions that are underserved
You are a nicer person than I am.
Took all the leftover garlic and thyme from the 40 clove chicken, mashed it, spread it on some bread with butter, toasted it and had AMAZING garlic bread
15:41
@SAJ14SAJ heh, I figure I might as well give back where I can
@rfusca noms
I just saw online that my neighbor should've signed for my sansaire
I want to go home :P
@Mien run
what is a sansaire?
I have to be here for 40 minutes :P
15:50
ah, a sous vide thingamajig
its the lowish cost one they kickstarted right?
@Mien Isn't "new toy arriving" a good excuse to leave work early? :-)
@ElendilTheTall Hey
Is it pizza day, Lindy? Or have you returned to your stromboli roots.
@SAJ14SAJ If I leave now, I don't have a train :P
Or perhaps I'll just catch it.
Doesn't matter :) I'll get it when I get it.
I should've received it in September or so :P
@waxeagle Yes, 200 dollars, and on kickstarter
never count on KS delivering on time and you'll never be disappointed
we've had one deliver on time so far in about 10 or 15 backed
15:57
@Mien What will you make first?
@mien where did you buy it? straight from kickstarter?
@SAJ14SAJ Eggs tonight :P I'm home alone and nothing else planned
@ElendilTheTall Yes
If I don't mess up the back plate thingie
Otherwise, I'll eat a pizza tonight :P
What, like soft boiled eggs?
dammit
I wish I'd never seen it
so many things to save for :(
