9:19 AM
Hi

1 hour later…
10:48 AM
@Mien Hey

Had a good sleep?

11:12 AM
Yes, actually it cooled off enough that it was quite nice. How you are?

Cool.
I'm fine too, getting dressed to go to the store.

Trying the stromboli again?

Yep, getting moz and some meat ;)
but it's only for me tonight, bf is out

You can practice :-)

11:31 AM
Yes, exactly!

1 hour later…
12:46 PM
Since tomorrow is our National holiday and we will get a new king, I'll share this with you:

@Mien Belgium has a king? What do you do with him? :-)

Not much actually :P
And starting tomorrow, we will have two kings and three queens

@Mien I am so confused? normally, you can only have one of each?

Not in Belgium.
You keep the title if you retire.

They can retire? Without dying?

12:54 PM
In 199x our king died, his wife still has the title of queen now
Well, this is our first king that retires. I guess he saw it from the Dutchies and got jealous.

I think that would usually be called "dowager queen"....

Hmm.
In most countries, she would be a princess again.

The widow of the king? I don't think so.
But then, I am not up on the rules of royalty.
We ' mericans are very suspicious of it, some of us. Others become followers. I don't get that.
A queen dowager, dowager queen or queen mother (compare: princess dowager, dowager princess, or princess mother) is a title or status generally held by the widow of a king. In the case of the widow of a emperor, the title of empress dowager is used. Its full meaning is clear from the two words from which it is composed: queen indicates someone who served as queen consort (i.e., wife of a king), while dowager indicates a woman who holds the title from her deceased husband. (A queen who rules in her own right and not due to marriage to a king is a queen regnant.) Currently there are three...

Hi!
^_^

@MartinTurjak Hey

1:10 PM
Hey @MartinTurjak

1:20 PM
@Mien I didn't know Belgium was such a popular target for jokes

I didn't either :P

... I was in England at the time of the royal wedding ... the most important role of royalty suddenly became very clear to me ... everyone has a topic to talk about ... and everyone ... I really mean everyone knew every tiny detail about all that royal stuff that was going on ... it was impressive

Lol, we don't, for sure.
There are a lot of people here that want to see the monarchy disappear.

it was bizare ... all newspapers were only reporting on that ... as if everything else in the world suddenly ceased to exist
the football world cup has the same bizare effect here in Germany

hehe :P

1:32 PM
and if you want to be included in any conversation at all ... you need to be up to date with everything

I feel that way here every time they have the Superbowl.

its a total conversation killer if you don't know the score from the last game
or all the names of the players

Some of us don't even know the names of the teams involved :-)

@SAJ14SAJ there I can have the excuse that football isn't big in Europe ... and try to look interested when people start explaining all the rules in detail

the only thing I can say in defense of 'merican football is that it is less excruciatingly boring than soccer, sort of. At least when they are playing, and not standing around.

1:37 PM
@SAJ14SAJ when is that?
;-)

By my estimate, about 10 minutes out of the three hours

@SAJ14SAJ exactly
^_^
hehe

On the other hand, soccer is continuously extremely boring :-)

@SAJ14SAJ Opinions differ :P

People are strange. Some even watch fishing on television.

1:38 PM
:D

@SAJ14SAJ or cycling

or just landscapes

Okay, cycling and landscapes are both far less boring than soccer and fishing.
After all, you can kind of go into a zen trance.

@SAJ14SAJ what about tennis?

Without someone shouting GOOAOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLL to wake you up
I am not a big fan of tennis. It is one of those games you have to play, not watch, to me.
And I haven't played since high school.
(I was terrible, but the girl I played with was very nice.)

1:41 PM
@SAJ14SAJ well I know that much about watching tennis on tv that the commentators 100% certainly manage to put me asleep
if they are talking ... they talk with a really uninterested tone ... very monotone

Golf commentators are worse. They use that fake whisper.
And golf itself is exceeded only by soccer and fishing in boringness.

@SAJ14SAJ very true
^_^

I have often wondered if the laws of brownian motion can be used to analyze soccer. They seem so similar.

@SAJ14SAJ what do you dislike about soccer?

@SAJ14SAJ but doesn't this imply that then soccer would follow some kind of logic

1:45 PM
It appears completely random.
Nothing ever happens.
There is no apparent cause and effect.

It isn't random.
Or at least, not more than other sports.

@SAJ14SAJ but people run like crazy all the time ... and perform very theatric falls

I could watch ballet... they are prettier, and more interesting.
And in some ways, more athletic :-)

@SAJ14SAJ O wasn't really defending it

I like playing soccer ;(

1:48 PM
I am hooked on the ballet drama shows on tv.

and I totally aggre with the part about ballet

When I was a kid in northern Virginia, soccer was our pickup game of choice. We would play all the time. But playing and watching are very different.

@SAJ14SAJ how does this look like?

@MartinTurjak ?????

ballet drama shows on tv?

1:49 PM
"hooked on" is an expression that means addicted, implying enjoys strongly.

I have no idea either

See Bunheads from the US (which probably will not get a second season), or Dance Academy from the 'strailians.

@SAJ14SAJ I understood the sentence ... I just never heard of this form of entertainment
@SAJ14SAJ I see

Never heard of those

Pretty girls dancing >>>>> soccer.

1:52 PM
It's like black swan, the series?
I really seems stupid though ..

I don't know, never heard of Black Swan.

Famous movie with Mila Kunis and Nathalie Portman, with ballet.

Nathalie is cute, but never saw it. I will have to see if it is on Netflix to stream.

also fairly recent

I don't go to movies, unless a new Pixar movie comes out, usually.

1:53 PM
@SAJ14SAJ it is not on demand
or to watch instantly

Have you seen Cars 2?
Only Pixar movie I haven't seen (except Monsters University, but I will).

I have not. Its the only Pixar movie I haven't seen, I think.
It got terrible reviews.
And Cars wasn't that great.
Is MU out?

I think it is.
It is, since a month

Monsters, Inc was in my opinion the best of the Pixar movies. Making a prequel will be very tricky. I hope they don't blow it. Cf, Star Wars.

I think they will though...
I really don't like all those pre- and sequels.

1:58 PM
I will watch it when it hits amazon streaming.
You may have noticed a trend here.
I dont' even have cable or satellite any more; streaming is the way :-)

@SAJ14SAJ we are also so used to netflix

I have the big three, Netflix, Amazon, and, well... hulu. For the trash shows.

it is sometimes quite bad ... when you can just continuously watch stuff for hours

I watch while I play games or chat.

@SAJ14SAJ now we decided on a house rule ... tv only on fridays ... or at times of extreme (di)stress - for emergency relaxation ^_^

2:02 PM
I live with four cats and no humans :-)
The cats have not expressed any strong opinion on television watching.
They do feel very strongly about feeding of cats, and it is about that time.

lucky you ;-)
now that you say ... I noticed that our cats need a refill on kibbles too
at least they haven't noticed yet ... as they are sleeping on the terrace at the moment

I am going to make breakfast (left over hamburgers from last night) and feed the furries.
Talk to you all later.

bon appetit!

In Belgium, there will be Netflix by the end of the year, I think.
@SAJ14SAJ What games do you play?
@MartinTurjak I started watching Dexter. I watch a bit too much :P

2:26 PM
@Mien I haven't watched dexter, we just finished watching star trek TNG again ... and it was kinda bad ad we always watched it with dinner ... and then kept watching ... and didn't do anything useful around the house in the evenings
and the list of things to do around the house is always long ... and didn't get any shorter

Hehe :D

now it is much better ... and I even started reading books before going to bed again

Well, I enjoy my last days of freedom.
On August 1st I begin working.

mhm
what do you do?
or rather ... what will the job be?

Research
What do you do?

2:34 PM
I help in a biology research lab here in Göttingen 2 days a week (with programming scripts, databases), the rest of the time I work as a freelance web designer and illustrator
and of course take care of the cats and the cooking ... and some other faun things around the house
^_^
in quite a relaxed way ... as my fiancee is the one who (at the moment) brings home most of the bacon

@Mien Mostly strategy and RPG, with some light Action RPG. Sometimes indies. I am a gameaholic.

Okay.
@MartinTurjak When will you marry?

next summer
@Mien this week we just got the place confirmed
fun times!

Cool :) congrats

thanks =)

2:38 PM
@SAJ14SAJ you ever play table tops?

@Mien we needed to start planning already as we have family and friends scattered all over the planet

@MartinTurjak Yes, I know there's a lot of stuff to do ahead.
You have to have your clothes also months in advance etc.
Good luck :P

@Mien we will have quite a hippy wedding in a tiny campground on a croatian island ... so clothes are not so important

hahaha :D

the hardest part will be to figgure out how exactly to get all the people there

2:43 PM
I think your options are limited: boat, airplane, dirigible, swimming.
Maybe hovercraft.

@SAJ14SAJ =P

But that woudl be expensive.

@SAJ14SAJ swimming or rowing will probably go the best with the hippy nature of the whole thing
and then there are no worries with expenses

How far is the swim?

not far

2:49 PM
By Grandma standards?

@SAJ14SAJ I checked ... the shortest distance from the mainland is almost exactly one mile ... so totally doable ^_^ If we give the people a little heads up already they can get in shape by then

So you will not be inviting anyone over 40 or 50 years of age?

grandmas will of course be chauffeured over by young guys rowing
^_^

I see

2:50 PM
Also brides, so the dress is not messed up?

waterproof dress baby

@Mien I don't believe that for a nanosecond.

I have seen videos of underwater weddings ... and the wet dress didn't seem like a big obstacle

Those people are crazier than soccer hooligan fans.

2:52 PM
hehe

Grey kitty says, "Meow. myow" which I take to mean, your bride is really okay with this?
She is very wise, my cat.

@SAJ14SAJ my bride is quite wise too ... so probably there will be a better way chosen to get people there
and not to get the dress too wet

can't she put on the dress once she's on the island? :P

@Mien That would be cheating!

It would not.

2:57 PM
Would too!

@SAJ14SAJ maybe I will really just recommend a nudist wedding ... to get rid of this rules about dresses

@MartinTurjak no one should go there!

@SAJ14SAJ well ... there are some germans invited ... Germans are are super keen on FKK / naturalism

FKK?

"Dresscode: nudist"
But of course, flesh-coloured clothes are okay too.

3:00 PM
This in a country that survives on bratwurst and beer? Scary.

@SAJ14SAJ I walked through the park in Munich last summer and half of the people were naked

Eeeew?

mostly over 60
not the nicest sight necessarily

Double eew?

Djeez @SAJ14SAJ

3:03 PM
but I guess the beer and bratwurst make up for it
and you could also see some good looking young men and women there
a treat ... to survive the wrinkliness and sagginess

I am sure the price is too high

I checked ... FKK stands for "Freikörperkultur" = "Free-Body-Culture"
Naturism or nudism is a cultural and political movement practising, advocating and defending social nudity in private and in public. It may also refer to a lifestyle based on personal, family and/or social nudism. Several other terms ("social nudity", "public nudity", "skinny dipping", "sunning", and, recently, "clothes-free") have been proposed as alternative terms for naturism, but none has found the same widespread public acceptance as the older terms "naturism" and (in much of the United States) "nudism". The naturist philosophy has several sources, many of which can be traced back...
the germans invented it ^_^
probably the same ones that you can still see in the city parks

That would be illegal here I think

Normally, there are zones for that.

I see. "Honey, do you want to go to that new resturant?" "No, nudity is okay, but they banned smoking!"

3:14 PM
@SAJ14SAJ probably ... your puritan country tries to forbid all fun stuff ;-) ... you even have some dry states

One, I think, and they work around it.

@SAJ14SAJ phew
^_^

When I travelled to Utah, i had to buy a one night membership in aprivate club, since they served alcohol, even though I don't drink, just so I could go in with my friends.

@SAJ14SAJ mhm ... friends of mine did the same when driving from GA to CA

@MartinTurjak The Bratwurst...yes, I see.

3:17 PM
@Cerberus well ... for the people that go for that kind of pleasure
I would be ok with a pretzel

Uhuh.

I had a pretzel thing yesterday from the Dutch Market. It was filled with ham and cheese. It was delicious.

But saggy Bratwürste.

@Cerberus ???????

@SAJ14SAJ Déjà vu!

3:19 PM
@Cerberus are you talking about the old inventors of nudism now?

@Cerberus Doggy, you are less coherent than even your usual baseline right now.

I was talking about the Bratwürste in your park...but I should stop!

@Cerberus as I suspected

stops

@Cerberus good ^_^

3:20 PM
@SAJ14SAJ You spoke of this same pretzel and the "Dutch" market yesterday, so I said I had déjà vued it.

as I am the one that is being reminded of the sight

Hehe.

@Cerberus It was a good pretzel. And M had not heard the story.

@Cerberus isn't this something that helps us prove that we live in some kind of imaginary world?

On one hand, I kind of appreciate the idea of shedding irrational taboos and objects, c.q. clothes; on the other, why would anyone go through all that trouble just to be naked in public?
@SAJ14SAJ I know. It's just that you've made me hungry again.
@MartinTurjak Umm which "this"?

3:23 PM
deja vu ... and I was refering to the matrix

A déjà vu is a glitch of the software that runs us?

@Cerberus As near as I can tell, everything makes you hungry.

I...suppose.

I'm hungry!
Bacon is in the oven :P

I'm not, I just had hamburgers.
Bacon... yum. I was too lazy to make bacon for the burgers this morning.

3:27 PM
I just had fried toast + avocado - and fried slices of smoked tofu with smoked paprika and a nice limy salad

No good can come from tofu :-)

that one was nice greasy and crunchy and really reach smoky tasting from the smoked paprika
not like any other tofu you know

@SAJ14SAJ You ate burgers as breakfast? Boy, you are American!

I do not respect the traditional meal boundaries.
Breakfast is for lazy. lazy is leftovers. I had them.

@SAJ14SAJ and yet you were surprised by the fries in random things yesterday
^_^

3:30 PM
I didn't put fries in my burgers.
Time displacement is different than random fry insertion.

Is breakfast almost always something cooked in the US actually?
If not cereal

No, lots of people just have a yogurt, or a grapefruit, or cereal, or just coffee, or nothing at all.
Or a bagel.

@SAJ14SAJ mmm ... bagel

Bagels seem boring :P
Doesn't anybody just have a slice of bread?
That is the standard breakfast here.

They are. So people put all sorts of stuff on them, and then in them.
Just a slice of bread? I guess someone might.

3:33 PM
cinnamon raisin bagel with a bit of avocado, tomato, onion and lime juice
mmm

Okay, that sounds horrible. Cinnamon raisin bagels are a crime against bagelhood.

Well, I meant with something of course, usually chocolate or hazelnut or speculoos spread, jam, speculoos, chocolate shavings, cheese... all standard here
Or something like gingerbread.
thinks

I don't know what speculoos is.

@SAJ14SAJ sometimes the evil stuff still wins over me I guess

3:34 PM
Donuts can have fruit and chocolate and stuff. That is not right in a bagel.
Bagels should get garlic, onion, poppy, sesame, stuff like that.

almost burnt my bacon :O

@SAJ14SAJ smoked salmon

Thsat isn't baked on top of the bagel. you put it on afterwards.

@SAJ14SAJ I like all bagels ... but sometimes I strangely crave the evil strange raisin swiftness ... but of course topped with something savory
the swiftness should actually read sweetness lol

Very odd.

3:47 PM
well ... I also do not respect the traditional meal boundaries.
;-)
but still don't put fries on random dishes ^_^

4:02 PM
@SAJ14SAJ but I guess I am just disappointing you over and over again ... vegan ... eats cinnamon raisin bagel ... thinks that tofu is a food item (however only tofu that is made by the standards of countries where it plays a major role in the traditional cuisine - and not some kind of western hippy tasteless crap that is called by that name ;-)
at least I like cats ... that might save it a little, hopefully ;-)

Hmmm I think I have a bit too much meat.
But there is no such thing, right?

@Mien is this a physiognomical note?

@Mien :-)

fat is usually considered bad to have too much of not meat

@MartinTurjak Lol :P
I meant in the pan, for food later

4:09 PM
@Mien most of the carnivorous people I know would then probably agree, that there is no such thing as "having too much meat in the pan"
and I often cook double amount of food for dinner, so that we can have it also in the lunch boxes the next day

So not true. You don't want to overcrowd the pan. Then you won't get good searing.

@SAJ14SAJ if you're searing
you could be stewing

It's just minced meat for my stromboli

Which starts by?
I wouldn't put ground meat in a stromboli. chopped ham, or pepporni or salami, or sausage.... meatballs would be great.

@SAJ14SAJ I don't think you need to start stewing by searing ... I somehow remember stewing as a process of slowly cooking something so that it releases the juices and combines with the rest of the dish? and so being a bit the opposite to searing (that should lock the juices in, no?)

4:22 PM
Stewing is just another name for braising, at the fundamental level. And yes, you often start by browning the meat for flavor.

searing then just helps get the caramelines of the juices

And the whole searing locking in the juices thing is a myth that is no long debunked.

@SAJ14SAJ ok ... that I didn't know ... as usually this refers to meat ... and I admit I was't keeping up to date
however I still hear chefs say this ... now I know better ... thanks ^_^

:-)
You don't need a lot of water for pasta, either :-)

It went alright this time! :-)
@SAJ14SAJ Last time I did ham and salami.
But I had to eat that till Thursday.

4:28 PM
@SAJ14SAJ I'm a conservational hippy and my fiancee is on top of that from southern CA (read: the desert) so we are always for reducing unnecessary water use

How does a Slovenian run into a Southern Cal girl to become his fiance?

we met in the Check republic ^_^
to make the story even more confusing

I've been there :P

@Mien sorry ... not at the right time ;-)

July 2007 :P

4:33 PM
She has a bf, they are apartment hunting for their second apartment :-)

@Mien yep ... missed me
@SAJ14SAJ why would they need two?

I didn't ask her :-) I assumed Mien meant subsequent, not additional :-)

Yes, the contract on this one expires in September, and we don't want it longer.

yes this is how it goes ... one apartment together, then another ... and then before you know it ... you are getting married

Sounds like an accident :P

4:40 PM
at least we liked all the apartments we lived in and wouldn't normaly want to move out ... but we moved for work excitement
@Mien I certainly wouldn't have believed it a couple of months ago ;-)

How long are you together?

but now it (almost) seems normal
@Mien ~4.5 years

Okay.

we met in january 2009 ... I hope I calculated right

Yes

4:44 PM
no it should be 3.5
I think

no

right

well, you were together since you met or not? :P

I shouldn't second-guess my mathematics instincts
@Mien yes

Yeah, 4.5 y then :P

4:46 PM
Who had the kitties?

We've been together since June 2009, so that's why I was quite sure ;)
@SAJ14SAJ What do you mean?

@SAJ14SAJ we got them from a shelter together when we moved to a big enough flat

Strombolitime!

@Mien then the one more apartment ... and you will not believe me now ... you will be where I am now ... planning a party on a Croatian island

Lol

4:52 PM
the forecast allows for a slight variations in the number of flats and the exact location of the party
and nudity or swimming aren't necessary elements of the party ... recommended, though

We'll see about that :P

5:08 PM
@Mien there are always other excuses to have a party ... like housewarming ... that seems to be coming up sooner ... so you can test the nudism idea ... but in case of a party in the new apartment swimming is only recommended if it doesn't mean flooding the place

You are weird.
That's good :D

@Mien thanks for the nice compliment ^_^

Isn't a compliment always nice?

@Mien but being assured that I'm in deed weird is one of my favorites, hence deserves the extra "nice"

Although the stromboli handled and looked nicer, the bread was actually better last time :(

5:25 PM
@Mien sorry to hear ... but I suspect people might anyway blame it on the unconventional use of ground meat, if the end product turns out bad ;-)

It's totally not unconventional here :P I use it a lot on pizza actually.

5:43 PM
@Mien almost like old nudists aren't necessarily unconventional here ;-)

:D
Whatever floats your boat, dude.

3 hours later…
8:30 PM
@saj14saj spag bol here doesn't have Italian sausage
The vast majority make it with just ground beef
The more enlightened use multiple ground meats
But Italian sausage is very uncommon
@derobert there is normally no need for AC here
It's hot for about a month out of the year, it would be stupid.
Wasteful, slavish to convenience, and unnecessary - American, one might say...

8:49 PM
:P
welcome back @ElendilTheTall

9:19 PM
@ElendilTheTall Cannot imagine why we missed you. Oh, wait ;-)
@ElendilTheTall Well, it should, it would taste better, and what you have described is already so far from the prototype dish from which it gets its name that putting in ground up anvils could hardly make it less authentic :-)
@sourd'oh In the bread/salt question, I didn't mention autolyse and gluten formation because most breads are not done via the autolyse method that requires 24 hours, and at concentrations of 2% or so in a typical bread, I wonder if the effect is actually all that significant? Any insight?
