I wonder if anyone's done a serious sci-fi about a society with unlimited portals
I know in the Hyperion saga there were portals, and people had homes whose rooms were all on different planets, and one day the portals stopped working, and family members didn't even have time to react while they were cut off from each other forever (non-portal interplanetary travel being very slow)
Portals also violate thermodynamics pretty badly
I think society would completely and utterly change if cheap portals were ubiquitous
