I wonder if anyone's done a serious sci-fi about a society with unlimited portals

I know in the Hyperion saga there were portals, and people had homes whose rooms were all on different planets, and one day the portals stopped working, and family members didn't even have time to react while they were cut off from each other forever (non-portal interplanetary travel being very slow)

Portals also violate thermodynamics pretty badly

but still.

Stephen R Donaldson's gap series was sorta like that, only not.

In the Wheel of Time, the magic users (some of them) can make portals.

but they only just figured out how

so they're still experimenting and learning

There was one where the portals had to be anchored and exactly mirror the target location.

Can't remember which books though.

in the last three books this one character uses portals for everything. like, on a battlefield, he opens a tiny portal to a cupboard back home to get some tea.

I just remember that they got trapped because the target location had collapsed in ruin or something.

This {complicated relationship} who wrote a novel once where they had portable jump packs that they were trained to use for combat. Very short-range teleport.

then, portable ones. military implications become serious.

then, consumer-grade portals.

They weren't useful for much else. You couldn't go far enough.

still. there've been superheroes who can do small jumps, like Nightcrawler... very useful in combat.

which in retrospect is a lot like PvZ's scientist's ability.

I only found out accidentally this summer, and by then I was already distracted with cancer, so I might not have brought it up.

I've settled on "I felt better when I had cancer" as a means of describing how I feel.

Mostly because I didn't have any symptoms.

Now I have scar tissue and decreased lung capacity and persistent numbness and chronic pain.

But hey. I don't have cancer, so there's that.

will those things get better?

some of it will, especially if I stick with PT. But it's a long and painful process to get back to something resembling normal.

I had really wanted to just be done once they took the tumor out. But no dice.
