> Due Wednesday, October 22: Decide on exact contents; are we choosing 8 of the 9? Purely by votes? (Isru Chanukah to use all 9? :-) )
@MonicaCellio what do you think?
I suppose we should use the 8 top voted answers. — Scimonster Oct 9 at 19:32
@Scimonster says this ^^
I think it'd make sense to keep it to a clean eight, which means dropping one of the nine entries we have listed. Basically, which one should that be? Going by votes, which is a not bad way to go, means dropping this one. Shall we just do that, or is there another one that you believe would be a worse fit?
14:30
@Issac That one is actually a good question... Up voted it.
The fighting wars on Shabbat question is less Chanukah related
@IsaacMoses @Scimonster hmm, good question (especially as the voting is no longer clear). How about this: use "9 days of Chanukah" (from here), only, as an "afterward", and then use the other eight as real sections. If the credits fit on one page (which seems plausible), then we have a page available -- so eight two-page days, one one-page afterward, and one page of credits? (Plus title page and intro and stuff, of course.)
@Scimonster messing with our metrics 8P
@MonicaCellio That's a cute idea. I think it'd look cleaner to have a page of credits whose reverse is a back page - mostly white space, with promotion of our other publications.
14:46
@IsaacMoses oh, that's true. Yes, that would be a better way to use the back page.
@Scimonster if we're going to drop one, I tentatively agree with this one. I like the question, it's motivated out of Chanukah, but it's more general. But before we decide, we should do a quick review for how these questions look in combination -- how's our balance of themes, subjects, etc?
I added comments to a few, proposing them for specific nights.
@MonicaCellio Sounds like a worthwhile exercise
Here's what I see so far:
1: history/text
2: b'rachot
?: chanukiyah name/history
?: lighting in unusual places
?: using oil for lighting
?: maoz tzur (the "hung on tree" one)
?: wars on Shabbat (Q arises from Maccabees)
8?: chanukiyah maintenance
8?: timing/extra day (why do we (not) do this)
That's a lot of questions about the chanukiyah itself, but for Q&A to be used at candle-lighting, that seems ok.
15:07
Of the nine, I count:
7 on Halacha
5 on the Chanukiya/lighting
3 related to dates
2 on history
2 on meaning
1 on practical advice
It may be nice to rebalance toward more meaning and less Halacha, if possible, though that'd require new question searching. I think that a lot of it being about the Chanukiya is natural, as that's the central observance and symbol of the holiday.
Some of the halacha ones are also practical advice (do I say this b'racha, can I clean my chanukiyah this way, etc). I mean in contrast to more-theoretical halacha; most of us won't personally deal with fighting wars on Shabbat. (Not disagreeing with your assessment, just commenting on it.)
@MonicaCellio Good point.
