The example for Advent of Code Day17 Part1 doesn't make any sense to me.
Specifically how after 1 cycle the z=0 plane has:
#.#
.##
.#.
When t=0, z=0 it starts out as:
.#.
..#
###
AIUI the middle rows first column should be active.

@IvenBach Hmm... spontaneously I would say that it doesn't really make sense to me either
@M.Doerner ?

Achievement Accomplished: Create a Minecraft plugin in Kotlin that regularly takes a backup of the world to a zip file and uploads the zip to AWS Glacier

I’m struggling with how to begin solving it. I though of maybe using a Hash to hold the 3D coords for the active cubes.

I would go with a chunk-based system
divide things into chunks that has 32x32x32 tiles each, and add more chunks when necessary

Why 32^3?

1:29 AM
because 3D
you could also go for smaller chunks, such as 8x8x8
but you may also divide it into 16x16x1 or however you'd like

I think I just used a hash set of active coordinates.

That's actually quite smart indeed ^^

In the end, every variation of the game of life can be done the same way. The only things that really differ are the definition of neighbour and the rules for the state change.

How does the example after 1 cycle work?
I don’t understand how some of them activate when they aren’t fulfilling the requirements

Btw, this is not the last game of life for this year's AdventOfCode.
Let me have a look at the problem statement again.
Step 1 of the example looks wrong.

1:54 AM
That’s what I understood from the rules.

2:05 AM
I don't quite understand z=-1 of cycle 1 either

Should z=-1 at cycle 1 result in:

2:22 AM
The first try was nearly correct. However, you forgot to consider the neighbours around the 3x3 grid. After 1 cycle, you should consider a 5x5 grid for each z.

.....
.....
.#...
...#.
..#..

To be a bit more precise, you should consider all neighbours of the active points.
That looks right.

Where the central 3x3 is directly below the t=0, initial setup.
Since all are inactive to begin with it simplifies construct the t=1 z=-1 state.

@Vogel612 I realized something... Laboratory Equipment which is needed for green science needs basic circuits.... sigh

12:25 PM
hey

12:58 PM
@SimonForsberg yeap

1:17 PM
Well, either way I still have a couple of episodes scheduled so I don't need to record anything new at the moment
@Vogel612 I just noticed where the currently public youtube videos are at, there I definitely don't have enough to automate circuits because of the missing moondrop
but over the next few episodes, you'll see that I will get a lot closer to that

2 hours later…
3:30 PM
Part 43 was released today, and now I've recorded and uploaded up to part 47

nice :)

I have no estimate of how many parts this whole thing will be, but... at least a couple of hundred more xD

I'm currently doing Uni assignments... analyzing Javascript is such a drag

Hopefully it should get better once I have the train city block setup
Doesn't sound like the most fun thing to do on a Saturday
How's your pyblock base doing?

a.foo(o);
a['foo'](o);
// these need to be equivalent!
@SimonForsberg didn't get around to doing more since we last talked in here
but had a nice astroneer date with my GF yesterday instead :)
all these flipping edge-cases... I'm so glad I set up a proper unit-testing harness
and I am finally closing in on having more lines unit-tests than "production" code

4:23 PM
Have a nice weekend everyone

4:55 PM
A friend of mine is playing a quarantine tournament today, it's being streamed here. twitch.tv/liquidhasuobs
She's ValkYria, currently playing Falstad in blue team
@Vogel612 Can understand that, Pyblock is a bit... daunting 😅

I don't understand anything about the meta of HotS

5:17 PM
@Vogel612 I’ve read opinions that SLOC for tests should equal or match production.

usually it will be more SLOC for tests

5:30 PM
@SimonForsberg the commentary is very german, that feels funny

@Vogel612 That was the first thing I noticed when I started watching it xD
