@jippie WTF? Please remove that message.
@jippie Please remove it!
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electrical component that implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. The current through a resistor is in direct proportion to the voltage across the resistor's terminals. This relationship is represented by Ohm's law: :I = {V \over R} where I is the current through the conductor in units of amperes, V is the potential difference measured across the conductor in units of volts, and R is the resistance of the conductor in units of ohms. The ratio of the voltage applied across a resistor's terminals to the intensity of current in the ...
A capacitor (originally known as condenser) is a passive two-terminal electrical component used to store energy in an electric field. The forms of practical capacitors vary widely, but all contain at least two electrical conductors separated by a dielectric (insulator); for example, one common construction consists of metal foils separated by a thin layer of insulating film. Capacitors are widely used as parts of electrical circuits in many common electrical devices. When there is a potential difference (voltage) across the conductors, a static electric field develops across the diel...
@jippie Not needed, too gruesome.
In electronics, a diode is a two-terminal electronic component with an asymmetric transfer characteristic, with low (ideally zero) resistance to current flow in one direction, and high (ideally infinite) resistance in the other. A semiconductor diode, the most common type today, is a crystalline piece of semiconductor material with a p–n junction connected to two electrical terminals. A vacuum tube diode is a vacuum tube with two electrodes, a plate (anode) and a heated cathode. The most common function of a diode is to allow an electric current to pass in one direction (called th...
Just a little EE lesson, to scroll farther down from that message...
interesting how nobody steps in while the girl gets robbed
@coding_corgi I would propose that most of the people on this chat don't really need that lesson - while I agree that that GIF isn't nice to look at either.
@AnindoGhosh Just little review for the people who forgot :], don't be such a buzzy-kill
17:08
oh ok, I'll ping @Kortuk to remove it
@coding_corgi If you think Chipotle and Taco Bell are Mexican food, you might want to re-think that.
17:23
@ThePhoton No, we have plenty of authentic Mexican food here in Ohio....
@coding_corgi On the one hand, there's probably more than I realize. Especially in a larger city. On the other hand, I lived in central Illinois for a while, and in the rural midwest I found that decent Mexican food is very hard to come by. (Only one good tacqueria in a town of 50000 people, which only opened in year 4 of my 5-year stay in Illinois).
@ThePhoton Oh that's great, now we can stop arguing about Mexican food in EE chat!
@ThePhoton Is burrito really a Mexican food anyway? I've spent some time (admittedly in southern Mexico) and I've never so much seen a burrito there. Perhaps it is a northern food?
17:42
@angelatlarge I think you're right...But you're ruining my whole argument.
@ThePhoton Oh, sorry. You want me to remove? :)
@angelatlarge No I want to try a Oaxacan tamal --- cause I've never had the opportunity.
@ThePhoton As far as I am concerned, Oaxacan anything is amazing. Hot chocolate, roasted meat, even crickets.
@ThePhoton (In contrast to the kind of insects the locals ate in the village where I spent most of the time. Those were gross and undelicious
@angelatlarge Once I was at the grocery picking out pans dulces and a little old lady told me if I eat too many I'll grow a mustache. Now whenever I display any "Mexican tendencies" like putting cinnamon in my coffee, my girlfriend tells me it's happening!
@ThePhoton How is your mustache?
17:48
@angelatlarge Still nonexistent. No thicker than Corgi's
@ThePhoton That's probably good if you want to hold on to the girlfriend. I don't know how the mexicans manage it.
Though, turth be told, the older generation never had girlfriends - just got married. And the new generation is mustache-free. So sad.
Ooo.. I have a picture of the last village "delicacy" I tried there... hold on...
Hmmm... I don't want to post it on imgur since it will last forever there, and the person in the picture did not necessarily sign up for that.
Is there another good pic-sharing service?
@angelatlarge Flickr?
@ThePhoton That requires registration, no?
@angelatlarge Yeah, if you don't have a Yahoo account. And if you do, everyone will see your account name in the URL.
But if there's no registration, how could they allow you to delete the photo later?
@ThePhoton You can set a paste expiration in pastebin...
17:59
Without anybody being able to come along and remove it when you don't want them to...
@angelatlarge OK that's one way.
@angelatlarge Is that cuy? Somehow I knew it was coming --- but I thought it was an Ecuadoran thing, not Mexican.
@ThePhoton I don't know what "cuy" is. The locals call it "tusa" in Spanish, and the local (Tseltal) name is "bah".
@ThePhoton It's a mole, I think.
@angelatlarge Mmmm. Cuy is guinea pig, maybe not exactly the same.
@ThePhoton Burrowing animal that lives under ground, eats corn (stalks? roots?)
The locals consider it a pest and a delicacy. It is a two-fer.
It also said to cure cough.
18:06
@angelatlarge Either a mole or a gopher, it looks like to me.
Friend of mine went to Ecuador and said they had a kind of ferris wheel arrangement where you put the guinea pig on the wheel (Not sure if it's been killed yet) and the wheel goes around through the fryer, and then you have cuy when it comes out.
@AnindoGhosh I think gopher sounds right too, thank you.
@ThePhoton Sounds a bit like a chicken roaster they have at the local store.
@angelatlarge Except normally you pluck the chicken and clean out the insides before you cook it.
@ThePhoton It would have to be killed, otherwise you would be eating the fur
@ThePhoton Are you saying the fry it with the fur ON?
@angelatlarge That's what my friend said. Also the fryer tends to accumulate the, ah..., intestinal contents of the guinea pigs.
18:09
@ThePhoton Yuck
OK, gotta go. ttyl everyone.
@angelatlarge Bye!
18:31
The ESR guy strikes again
@AnindoGhosh ?
@AnindoGhosh Do you have any experience with winging a voltage? Should I have a VCC to 10K resistor to component usually? I am going to try winging a voltage to a component that I have no info on...
@coding_corgi "winging" a voltage?
@ThePhoton Yes, do you know what 'wing' means?
@coding_corgi Like on a bird?
Or bolting together with a wing-nut?
Or "just winging it" --- picking the value without consideration?
@ThePhoton Yes,
19:16
grEEtings
@ThePhoton jerk! now you're making me miss my favorite tacqueria!
@rawbrawb Check Angel@Large's photo up above---it will cure any food cravings you have.
@ThePhoton you know fiesta del mar? Original in DT Mountain View and the one closer to palo alto (still in MV) - aah it must be lunch time!
@ThePhoton thanks!
@ThePhoton good catch on the SPICE question, i scanned it earlier, and totally missed the missing bulk connection. +1 for observational capability.
@rawbrawb I just got that: gr EE tz EE!
19:27
@ThePhoton WTF $150 bucks for the VIP package? Just what is a VIP Taco? VIP street food?
@MLM Yo
@ThePhoton It is gone now. ImagePie, worked beautifully.
But if anyone wants to look at an image of a tasty tusa I can upload again.
@angelatlarge tusa ya cookies ....
@coding_corgi that is copyright, I didn't give you permission. ;)
Where art thou, our former chatroom overlords! I beseech you to smite the multitude of messages starred by the Philistines by right right side of our humble screens!
@rawbrawb What is your usage fee schedule?
@rawbrawb :)
@angelatlarge so what does tusa tasta like?
19:37
@rawbrawb Tasta lika gamey-a. It was very liver-like. Did not enjoy.
@angelatlarge apparently quy - the andrean thing @ThePhoton was mentioning doesn't taste too bad. Never had either myself. But have travelled in China a lot when it was opening up so ... I too have some stories.
@rawbrawb Oh! It is "quy" with a uvular stop! Must be an Andean thing, as in Quechua. I see.
@rawbrawb Feel free to post pictures. Pre-ingestion (first time), please.
@angelatlarge don't take my spelling as a standard by any means! just ask @AnindoGhosh!
@rawbrawb What does @AnindoGhosh know about uvular?
@rawbrawb Or IPA for that matter?
@angelatlarge no pictures, sorry
@angelatlarge LOL
19:42
(And no, I don't mean India Pale Ale)
@angelatlarge lost me on that one!
don't know what IPA is outside of beer
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)"The acronym 'IPA' strictly refers [...] to the 'International Phonetic Association'. But it is now such a common practice to use the acronym also to refer to the alphabet itself (from the phrase 'International Phonetic Alphabet') that resistance seems pedantic. Context usually serves to disambiguate the two usages." (Laver 1994:561) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of oral language. The IPA...
@angelatlarge you seem to be a student of laguages ...
@rawbrawb That's what my degree is in.
@angelatlarge Just came off the phone, an Indian colleague trying to spell his name so we can find each other on office communicator ...
19:45
@jippie Indian colleague = fearless leader?
.. because at the phone we don't understand a word of what we say
@jippie Or are you saying that there is more than one Indian person?
a colleague from India
@jippie That does not necessarily exclude fearless leader from that singleton set, without additional world knowledge.
19:47
@rawbrawb That silence is usually what happens when someone asks a question like that :)
@angelatlarge my first change this weekend isn't scheduled for another 7 hours, so I think his problem is probably unrelated to my team's work.
@jippie Dear Mr @jippie, would you mind explaining what "m" means? My best theory: "I don't want to agree but I want to respond somehow."
@jippie "change"?
@angelatlarge LOL, no, you were chatting with yippie dude so I proceeded to stuff my face ....
m as in hmmm
and "change" as in "planned work"
@jippie hmmmm as in the frankenstein monster
19:49
@jippie ...keep going...
@W5VO I want to applaud the moderator takeover.
@angelatlarge no more as in 'thinking ...'
@jippie Ah!
@angelatlarge Why thank you!
19:51
@W5VO Well played. But we do have an issue, I think.
@W5VO The former overlords used to clean out the uselessly starred messages daily. The new overlords aren't doing that. So there is a lot of StarredCruft now.
@W5VO I want the old overlords back.
@angelatlarge you complain, he ignores. You act positively he responds.
@rawbrawb He does not ignore. He flips the sign on your comment.
@angelatlarge The solution is simple.... Don't star everything under the sun, and you won't have a starred comment issue.

@W5VO If it was only up to me, then yes.

MLM
@coding_corgi Hey, sorry didn't notice the mention
19:55
@W5VO Some people don't understand that stars are global. And some people do and star everything under the sun anyway.
@angelatlarge I could take away the major benefits of stars ~_~
@W5VO What do you mean?
@W5VO Disable starring altogether?

There. Now you don't have a starred comment problem
Note to self: the new overlords are a tad more trigger happy than the old ones. Don't piss off the new overlords.
The stars are going out one by one. Does that mean that the world is about to end?

@rawbrawb Sorry, I don't know Mountain View or Pally Walto very well.
@rawbrawb You of all people here should remeber that SPICE is a simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis.

@angelatlarge Sorry, I remapped to

@angelatlarge or perhaps try removing the 666 :)
@jippie Yes, I only personally know one person who was in the tornado and they were fine.
@Kortuk how close did it come to you?
@rawbrawb 10 tornado widths away, so 20 miles.
20:23
@CamilStaps Yes that works...
@Kortuk oh wow! give the randomness of teh storm tracks that is CLOSE

I'm going to bed, goodbye!
@rawbrawb They set off weather radio everywhere in the area, but generally tornados follow a set path, mostly East west or North south.
They will spot them and say where it is and direction.
@CamilStaps Bye. May you dream of Leia's at-signs.
@Kortuk still high winds though ... it's good they are so predictable (once formed I guess)
@rawbrawb Yeah, and they generally can spot where it might form.
And no one ever needs to worry about a tornado getting me in OKC. I work in a radiation environment, I am 30 seconds from 20 feet of high density borated concrete.
@Kortuk So if his building goes down, he's a goner
and so is most of OKC
20:27
@Kortuk ROTFL
@W5VO yes, very much so. we should just start calling him bunker boy!
In all seriousness, if you can watch the local news during a severe weather event, you can easily see whether you need to take shelter or not.
@W5VO Thank you moderator for this very common, common sense piece of information
@Kortuk I used to drive back and forth between Champaign and Chicago IL on Friday nights. There'd be these tornado warnings for "the eastern portion of Howard County and the northwest of Grauman County" or whatever. And I'd be like, I have no idea if I am in those counties or not...
I have an OO design pattern question if anyone is willing: What is the right way of thinking about whose responsibility it is to clone the object pointed to by a reference passed to an API function: the clients or the APIs?
Had a tornado take out 4 or 5 houses within a block or two of me...but we never had the kind of monster you guys get in Oklahoma.
@angelatlarge Just so long as everybody agrees whose responsibility it is, ...
20:39
@ThePhoton Well, "everyone" in this case is me, myself, and I.
And if you're talking C++, it probably mostly matters who has responsibility for deciding when to clean up the clone.
@ThePhoton I am on Java
@ThePhoton There has got to be some received wisdom on this, don't you think?
@ThePhoton And don't you hate OO anyway?
@angelatlarge No I just hate C++
@ThePhoton We have a very good facilities manager.
@Kortuk Meaning he makes sure you know which county you're in?
20:41
@ThePhoton Ah.
@Kortuk glad to hear you were out of the path, btw.
@ThePhoton if it might be a risk here every phone will turn on in the building and explain these issues.
@W5VO I didn't mean to piss you off, BTW. Sorry.
@angelatlarge It's OK, I was pissed off coming in
@W5VO I know. The Bruins losing on such stupid plays was tough :)
20:50
@angelatlarge I dont agree with this. I think if people want to star it then it stays starred.
@Kortuk I think you are at least partially right, obviously. But there is an argument for curation/moderation, somewhere. Obviously the previous overlords were not democratically elected, but someone could create a new room. So I am torn. Out of curiosity did someone think that the old system (with the old overlords) did not work well, or did the ownership change because "this is how things should be"?
@Kortuk Maybe that's a question to be discussed on meta, I dunno.

2 hours later…
22:28
Anybody use Coolrunner-II CPLDs?
22:50
@angelatlarge Sorry, I stepped out. What do you mean new overlords?
@Kortuk n.p. Oh, sorry, maybe you don't know the backstory?
@angelatlarge I clearly missed something.
It would seem
is this because I made a few other room owners?
@Kortuk Actually, it is about the old room owners (="previous overlords") not being room owners anymore.
@Kortuk Check who the current owners are.
@ThePhoton What did I miss?
22:55
@Kortuk W5, on a mission, restoring order.
@ThePhoton Ahh. Is this what I am hearing about people unstaring things. I made other owners so they could add people to have rights and such.
@Kortuk I assumed he/y'all got a memo from StackExchange high command saying only site mods should be owners on main chat rooms or something...
@ThePhoton Ahh.
@angelatlarge I dont agree, stars dont impact rep, it is just someone identifying that a post is worth noting. It is their decision. You can discuss on meta, but minus features chat is a pretty laid back place I would prefer we did not start making serious rules for.
@Kortuk But maybe he just thought Jippie & Anindo were accumulating too much power....
@ThePhoton That's probably it :)
22:59
@angelatlarge The "old overlords" were only owners for maybe 2 months, I only added them a little while back.
@angelatlarge For a room we have had for ~2 years I would call them new overlords.
If they were constantly unstaring things they did not think should be starred I would have removed their rights on that alone.
@Kortuk I see. I don't know the sordid history :)
@Kortuk I might call that "curating" :)
@Kortuk Were they doing that?
@angelatlarge I get what you are saying, probably better to explain to people what stars are for and let it go as they want. I dont decide what comments you can upvote or posts you can upvote. I can remove comments as a moderator as voted by the site.
@ThePhoton well, I would assume on @angelatlarge complaining that no one is doing it now.
The only thing I ever saw them do with their "power" was pin a comment about Camil needing to learn another language than C18 to be able to talk to girls...
@angelatlarge But I have been super busy at work, so I dont know all the history here.
@ThePhoton ha. No worries.
23:02
@ThePhoton We had a discussion of this.. last night? Let me find a link... hold on.
@ThePhoton it really might have been someone on high, I have been off due to work for a little more hten a week.
This is what I had in mind:
yesterday, by Anindo Ghosh
@jippie Almost all of the ones I unpinned were either Corgi's work or hhh's - I assume they pin messages to remind them what they were reading - but the starred messages are of no interest to anyone else.
@Kortuk That's what I figured, but I am curious why. It doesn't sound like there was a problem, but maybe there was? I am just curious
@angelatlarge wait, corgi and hhh were pinning things? How did they get owner?
I assume that means owners can add other owners?
@Kortuk No, that's a "typo" - he meant "unstar"
@Kortuk But yes, that is true.
@angelatlarge you can not star your own message, they were probably pinning something useful to them.
23:05
@Kortuk They were starring messages, probably to remember useful ones.
@angelatlarge that is what stars are for, why were they unstarred?
@Kortuk Anyway, we have now spent more time on this than the subject is worth :)
if they were just starring everything someone just needs to tell them that is not how to do that.
yesterday, by Anindo Ghosh
I would assume crap message unpinning now becomes a key responsibility area for the mods. All is good.
Haha. love your views on site moderation @AnindoGhosh
@Kortuk Well, if you ask me for a link to a common datasheet, and I send it to you, and you star it (because you don't understand what stars are for?) that's not useful to everyone.
@Kortuk Yeah, my thought was that the mods a) have enough responsibilities already and b) don't hang out in chat enough for that ;)
@angelatlarge tell them what a star is for, one extra star in the world? Or they think that datasheet link is something useful for others.
@angelatlarge I dont agree it should be done.
If you want to suggest usage be reduced to someone, do it, but I dont think unstarring all over the place makes sense, I generally have pretty strict rules to when I will do it. It has to be a real problem post.
23:09
@Kortuk Again, I want to underscore that it isn't a huge problem, and by talking about it so much it makes it seem like it is a huge problem. Which it is not. It isn't a big or even a medium-sized problem.
@angelatlarge yeah, I will agree on that, I dont want to make you feel like I am beating a dead horse.
@Kortuk Well, we are dorks, so discussing minutae (sp?) is what we do, right?
@angelatlarge I am an engineer, you dont want to ask me how to spell.
2
If I could just get the sidebar to show my own stars only, I'd have utterly no interest in what other people starred.
@ThePhoton META!
23:11
@ThePhoton Ah, see I like the social starring.
@Kortuk But with curation :)
@angelatlarge (pretty sure he is joking)
@Kortuk Oh. Crap.
@angelatlarge I don't mind the social starring, But if I star something so I can find it again later, I'd like to be able to filter down to just my stars.
@ThePhoton Are we still in <joke> tags?
@angelatlarge pretty sure the site is meant to mostly be run by the community and only have moderator actions in extreme cases, single handedly unstarring seems like one in a system where moderation is meant to be the lightest.
23:12
And if I star some datasheet link you think is too common to bother with, well, why don't you just look at your own stars, starred by your own criteria.
@angelatlarge I'm serious, but also I don't really think its a big deal either way.
@Kortuk Well, here's the thing: unstarring might be a lighter touch than telling someone to change their behavior.
@ThePhoton Are you sure search cant let you do something like that
@Kortuk No. Can I search in chat?
@angelatlarge That would be like me deleting every bad post from a user without ever telling them why, I disagree.
@ThePhoton Yes!
23:13
Pretty sure there are some tricks in there.
@Kortuk Hmm... good analogy. Let me think about that...
Haha I just realized I can star the whole room.
@Kortuk Anyway why go through some complex search interface, when I could just have my starred items in the sidebar and be able to find the stuff I wanted to be able to find?
@angelatlarge at first you dont have that poor interaction, but at some point they will notice someone is removing all of their stars and that their input is being ignored/removed in an environment where they thought others enjoyed their interaction and valued them.
@Kortuk Sometimes we do do that (e.g. mr. T where we are pretty sure the author knows what the problem is), but that's not the case here.
@ThePhoton you really could meta that.
23:15
@Kortuk Do you think stars count for that much?
@angelatlarge Do you think they are worth having users review and determine the value of?
@Kortuk In a way, yes. So tell me, I just starred a datasheet link for 555 timer, what do you say to me?
@angelatlarge If you make the argument that it is nicer to just remove them I strongly disagree. If you think one user knows better why another users considers a post worth starring then EE.SE/
@Kortuk I think a light touch is required, same as you presumably exercise in moderating.
@angelatlarge I dont see a problem with starring that. If you were starring all the time on things I dont find useful where I dont think you know the stars are for noting importance not like a rep thing. I would explain that stars are for remembering or noting important comments.
23:18
@Kortuk Or, alternatively, I ask you how to set the sixth bit, and you say int i=1<<6 and I star that. Is that good starring or bad?
@angelatlarge To me that is not useful, might be to you. You just noted the answer to a discussion in chat.
@angelatlarge but I would never needed to ask that, I knew the answer.
@angelatlarge Maybe it is a scan of the rare Raytheon datasheet for the 555, superior in all ways to the the competitors?
@ThePhoton Right, I am trying to exclude that.
@angelatlarge But how does anindo know better then hhh what is useful?
@angelatlarge Or maybe I'm working on a 555 project and I think it would be handy to have a link to it in the sidebar?
23:20
@Kortuk @ThePhoton I am sure we can come up with a chat comment that is of interest to an extremely limited audience, where we can agree on that fact. No?
@angelatlarge Yep.
@angelatlarge Even so, shouldn't a member of that audience be able to star it?
Wait, who starred that!
3 hours ago, by W5VO
@angelatlarge The solution is simple.... Don't star everything under the sun, and you won't have a starred comment issue.
Ok, so the point of the stars is to socially share some comments, right? It is not a personal bookmark list, right? Are we agreed on that or no?
23:22
@angelatlarge meh, I would say both.
@Kortuk (You do have da powah)
@angelatlarge It does appear to work that way. Though I think the other way would be more useful.
If you find it useful it is much more likely someone else will, just as if I find an answer useful it is more likely someone else will, so I am able to accept an answer for my question.
@Kortuk The difference with questions is that accepted answers don't "scroll off" the same way starred IM-lets do.
More stars bumps it, there is no accept, it is more like an upvote with time decay. And you can always go view them all. There is not some important task to ensure the best comments ever are on that list.
23:25
@Kortuk Yes, sure they are there. But I think the mode of interaction with chat and the main board is different.
@Kortuk That is sad, sometimes, like when @W5VO PS tasting comment scrolled off...
@angelatlarge Was a great comment, you can always link to it!
@Kortuk I have. In my profile :)
@angelatlarge the funniest part is people asking others to star it got starred because people thought others should do that and starred it to notify them and caused it to leave faster.
@angelatlarge But there will be other funny comments, and there were ones before that.
@angelatlarge Oct 28 '10
Judging by what's in the sidebar now, it looks like the criteria for starring is "somewhat clever", not "useful"
@Kortuk Anyway, I can see that we don't fully agree on a) what stars are for and whether @AnindoGhosh's benevolent dictatorship was useful/good as a result of what we think starred comments are for. I am fine with that.
@ThePhoton That is how I liked it, personally. Clever and funny.
@ThePhoton For "useful" that's the answers/questions in the main board. I mean how useful can you be (really) in one sentence, out of context?
23:29
that is the first starred comment. I personally am not happy to hear people where constantly unstarring from users that were judged, "starring bad things".
That is some of the elitism he rails against.
I regret giving out owner, I was just trying to help Anindo get lower rep users in chat so he could help them, quite the opposite of elitism.
@Kortuk That is the one "usefuL" item on the sidebar.
@Kortuk Some starred comments were judged to be starred as a result of misunderstanding what starring is for.
@Kortuk I don't think it is fair to level the charge of elitism as a result.
@angelatlarge yeah, I get that was the reason.
@angelatlarge Ohh, you may be taking my statement too seriously, elitism is not always at an extreme, we all do it lightly, the site has to do it lightly or we would just be swarmed by all consumer electronics questions.
@Kortuk Ah, OK.
@Kortuk OK, well, lets declare this discussion officially dead then.
@angelatlarge but I think chat should have a pretty low entry cost. Although users always asking questions here need to be directed to the main site.
@angelatlarge Yeah, semi related, if someone is constantly filling up chat with questions they are just not taking the time to work out and post on the site it can be a problem also.
23:33
@Kortuk I agree on both counts
@Kortuk I think we all do that to some degree as well.
@Kortuk But that kind of goes with it being a real community (unlike chat on Stack Overflow, for instance)
