@jippie To me (probably a result of my educational background) adding "applied" to any word makes it sound less cool. I'd go for the
@jippie It may have been. Must have been someone who doesn't like fun :)
@jippie You are not an Eclipse person, are you?
@angelatlarge electronics is not about fun, it is serious stuff. I don't think anyone on EE is into liking fun
@angelatlarge I haven't discovered the additional value of an 200MB+ IDE coded in java over a makefile and text editor
@jippie hi
@jippie fun=bad. We better tell @CamilStaps to stop having fun with PICs and go be miserable with some girls instead :)
@angelatlarge hmm and loose his brain for science?
@jippie The fun must be stopped.
18:05
@jippie yesterday i asked u about using arduino uno as external programmer
@jippie Sigh. You speak the truth brother.
@yogece I wasn't paying too much attention, I was working at the same time
@yogece what's the problem?
@jippie i am trying use arduino uno as programmer for external chips but i dont get the work done. my recent refernce is pdp11.byethost12.com/AVR/ArduinoAsProgrammer.htm
@even that isnt working
@yogece Server not found
Arduino Uno as an ISP programmer

Programming a Target AVR using Arduino Uno board loaded with ArduinoISP

Arduino Uno + ArduinoISP form an ordinary ISP programmer that is used by avrdude to program various 8 bit AVRs with any kind of hex file.

No bootloader is needed, no hardware removal from Arduino Uno is necessary

It may happen that you have an Arduino Uno that you bought, played a bit with it and now you want to move further, to build your own board, which can be just a simple AVR microcontroller + an oscillator + a LED, but you do not have an ISP programmer.
18:17
@yogece what is the problem? Do you get an error message or so?
@jippie i given correct connections and followed the steps given there even then it is showing error msg
err is device id doesn't match
@yogece Did you attach any extra components to the Arduino apart from the AVR you want to program?
@jippie no i have used arduino alone
@yogece what device ID does it read and which one does it expect?
@jippie 0x0000ff
18:26
hmmm
I have to go out for some shopping, but you can try this in the mean while:
either:
A) on the Arduino connect a 120 ohm resistor (brown red brown) between +5V and !RESET pins
OR
B) connect a 10uF capacitor between Arduino's GND and !RESET
@yogece don't do both.
/me is out for a little while
@jippie thanks let me try your tip
@CamilStaps It does help! And as you should remember: I DO have common sense, so in the nicest manner as can be, please: SHUT UP
@vvavepacket Hi, I am actually interested in AVR/Atmel uC stuff, not 'atmega stuff' ;]
@vvavepacket Please put full names with an @ tag, that way, people can see you are talking/sending a message to the specific user
@jippie You forgot about the 1.0.2 ISP example sketch
@yogece If what @jippie recommended doesn't work, I have some suggestions from my own expeirence.
@coding_corgi plz i am struggling for few days
@coding_corgi There are exceptions, of course... :) If you're in a rapid-fire conversation with someone, please don't put @ notifications in front of everything--it makes a big "thwump" sound every time, and can be somewhat annoying if done repetitively.
(but that's really only if it truly is a one-on-one conversation)
@coding_corgi .....
18:36
@anorton Hey, I am feeling grumpy and bossy to day, so stay away from me, ;]
@yogece Oh, right here, tell me: are you just trying to program avr's with an arduino?
<teasing>Oh no! Everyone run! Da Corgie is grumpy! :D</teasing>
:)
@anorton Like the emotion tags
@coding_corgi I find that they sometimes help... other times, though, they just kill the moment. :)
@coding_corgi yeah
@anorton They actually do help, I should start using them, sometimes people don't get what you are trying to help, do you know HTML?
@yogece Programming in C or C++?
or ASM....
18:41
@coding_corgi :eek:
@coding_corgi c
@anorton I know, DEFINITELY not, not now at least for me....
@coding_corgi I know some basic HTML--enough to be dangerous! :) I have a Wordpress site and like to customize it, so I know some HTML, PHP, and CSS.
@yogece Ok, ummm... What's your current setup?
@anorton Cool, I know web dev too, not PHP though: HTML, JS, CSS,
ooh, cool. :) I want to learn some more JS... it's one of those languages that I kinda know (at least enough to read it), but not enough to write it.
18:43
@anorton I VANT TO VEARN PHP!!!
@anorton See what I mean? grumpy. :]
@yogece Are you USING a crystal in your setup?
@coding_corgi yes i do
@coding_corgi haha. Yeah. PHP is cool, but I don't like web programming in general (too much work to get the UI nice). So, I don't know much PHP. W3C schools is my friend. :)
@anorton I know it is a PITA, I learned web from W3C too!
18:48
:)
@yogece Upload this to your uno: pastebin.com/aYgtMPT2, and remove the resistor or capacitor
@coding_corgi r u saying about resistor used with reset terminal
@yogece Yup, remove it before you upload the sketch I gave you, (name it ArduinoISP)
@coding_corgi this would work
@coding_corgi time 12.23am here i would do it later any way thank you very much for helping me
@yogece With a little more work...
@yogece It will only take a little more time, do you have work or school now?
18:55
@coding_corgi work.working as a lecturer in an engg college
@yogece Ok, bye
@coding_corgi bye bye
@yogece I stay here about all day long, see ya!
@anorton Sill here?
@NickHalden Yo
@anorton Whatcha doing? Are you chatting on your Raspberry Pi?
19:06
I wish. I'm watching my statics lecture video of which I missed the live session.
It's not incredibly interesting right now. Just basic vector math.
I got my Raspberry Pi to start up, etc. and have connected it to a TV.
The problem I'm running into is the TV doesn't have a very clear image on the sides of the screen, so some of the terminal text isn't readable.
@anorton No HDMI ports?
No... :(
It's an older TV--just RCA ports
I have an LCD panel from a dead laptop that I'm going to find a driver board for, and then use that for my pi.
@anorton Cool,
@anorton Version A or B?
@anorton Good
19:52
hmm ..
everybody out?
@jippie Not entirely
buenos dias
@jippie Buenas afternoonas
@jippie You are not the right person to ask OO pattern questions, are you?
oh is it spelled with an a?
@jippie In faux Spanglish it most certainly is.
19:55
Trying to pick up Hispanamerican (did I spell that right)?
@jippie Oh, you mean in "buenos dias"? No, it isn't. You spelled it correctly, I think
@jippie I don't know how to spell "Hispanamerican".
Realmente, no se escribir muy bien: soy una papa con letras en Castellano.
Tal ves te gustaria spanish.stackexchange.com
Anyhow, I am trying to figure out an OO design issue, and I don't even know where to look. The chat on Stack Overflow seems to be dead-dead-dead.
@angelatlarge the FAQ explicitly states that that stack is not for new learners.
@jippie Not everyone is out...
@jippie Ohrly? That's kind of annoying.
@jippie I guess some people think that should be part of the [ee.se] faq...
@angelatlarge yeah
20:01
@jippie That's like saying: you are not allowed to learn in here. Seriously?
@angelatlarge I'm starting to think sometimes that isn't a bad option ;o)
@jippie Oh, why would you ever say that?! :)
experience
sure the <sarcasm> and </sarcasm> tags are in the right order?
@jippie Oh, sorry, did I just ping you six times in a row. Whoops. I forget with the animated editing and stuff...
@jippie :)
This: imgur.com/MnJujpx is the only thing happening on Java chat in Stack Overflow
I am curious how they made it. But not my top priority right now.
@angelatlarge I am an attention-fetishist, I like being pinged as much as possible and maybe I even get a badge for it.
20:05
@jippie attention-fetishist: You an a few other people in here :) Not me of course. No sir.
@jippie Getting ping'd sounds like something NSFW.
@DavidKessner It is past 10 in the evening here, so it's safe
@jippie One comedian (I forget who) had a bit that went something like: "I once Googled my girlfriend. Then I flipped her over and Yahoo'd her!"
@DavidKessner I think you must have seen it to get the joke.
...crickets...
20:11
@DavidKessner hohoho
@jippie Wouldn't that make it "Buenos Noches", then? (I know almost zero Spanish.)
@DavidKessner buenAs noches
el dia
la noche
@DavidKessner noches was on todays podcast, yes.
but I stopped thinking about morning afternoon evening and night a while ago since there is always somebody just waking up somewhere
I can't keep track timezones
@NickHalden I'd be happy if I remember at least the noche and dia part...
@jippie Tu eres mi nocha filtra
filtra?
ah. Google translate helped. Never mind.
20:25
@angelatlarge You talk spanish with such a 'yankee' accent. :]
@anorton It was a silly pun: noche/notch. I don't think Google translate should do well with that.
Spent two hours today in front of a mill working on an enclosure for a prototype. Bezels hide many ills (but not much in the way of goofs to hide today!)
I was meaning the "filtra" word itself. The actual phrase didn't make sense at all. :P
Anybody familiar w/ the Molex Panelmate line, by the way? I need a small pitch low profile wire to board connector for a patient sensor. It's more for pre-production convenience than a final manufacturability concern. The sensor board is tiny and hard to hand work, and a connector will be a big help over a hard solder connection
I bought the crimper and sample kit from Digikey
@anorton I invented that. I don't know if it exists. It is Spanglish for "filter"
@ScottSeidman Sorry.
OK, time to go to a birthday party. Bye all!
20:44
@AnindoGhosh DIL-10 spotted in this question!

Q: N-Ch FET with open-drain output

SkaevolaI stumbled across this line in this datasheet (page 10): Serial Data Output Pin. Internal N-Ch FET with open-drain output that requires external pull-up resistor. It shifts out the previous eight SDI bits that allow daisy-chain operation of multiple packages. Could somebody briefly expl...

user61389
@angelatlarge who says I'm miserable with girls?
user61389
Don't ask.
@angelatlarge I bet you are just going for the goody bags
@CamilStaps Everyone!
user61389
@coding_corgi you actually can't say that without long term experience in this room. But I'm not willing to discuss it, just wanted to mention it.
@ScottSeidman hi there @ScottSeidman, good morning. Can't help you on that.
20:46
@jippie Thanks anyway, jippie, angelatlarge
@CamilStaps Oh, c'mon, in the time I spend in this room, there is probably one comment about you being bad with girls every other day, now that's saying something...
user61389
@coding_corgi that's not what I refer to, check to what message I linked.
@CamilStaps I did, I am not an idiot,
user61389

@coding_corgi you actually can't say that without long term experience in this room. But I'm not willing to discuss it, just wanted to mention it.
user61389
@coding_corgi This did not link to your "Everyone!" message.
20:50
@CamilStaps No, I exaggerated a little, but really, some people is > than one,
@CamilStaps Now stop with your lame comebacks and change your profile picture to something a little less friendly, maybe a little photoshop could help, a frown here, some wrinkles there, etc. ;]
@CamilStaps In other words, let's stop fighting.
user61389
@coding_corgi we're talking past each other here, but that isn't really a problem since I didn't want to discuss it (=your complaints about silence) anyway.
user61389
I'm off to bed, good night everyone.
@CamilStaps Goodnight!
time for bed
/me is out

<quietly> Is Jippie gone? Can we talk about him now? </quietly>
<whispering> jippie seen 30 sec ago
@vvavepacket shhhh... let's come back soon (when he's (long) gone)...
@vvavepacket he was just seen 44s ago...
21:27
9 mins ago
strange my profile doesn't get updated when I leave a comment
@jippie AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! RUN! He's back!
Hé!! are you guys talking about me?!
@jippie Nooooo.... I don't know what you're talking about...
@DavidKessner We should've waited a little longer...
@coding_corgi Damn, damn, damn, damn. He's on to us.
@DavidKessner Us? No, YOu, not 'us'!
21:33
really signing off now
behave yourselves

What is the best practice on level shifting (to avoid skew and keep data integrity)? Should I shift the data coming into the SPI chip or the SPI lines coming out?
@MLM It depends on where you have the most/least timing margin.
Also, you can often go from a higher voltage to a lower voltage with a resistor divider or even just a current limiting resistor. No chip required.
MLM
MLM
21:48
@DavidKessner need to go from 1.8v to 3.3v
@MLM sounds like a perfect candidate for two diodes =P
MLM
MLM
at least from what I understand
the capabilities of my board
@NickHalden elaborate please :)
@MLM What speed is your SPI interface?
MLM
MLM
@DavidKessner at 1.8v its 5 Mhz and at 3.3 its 10 Mhz
not quite sure on the lag of the level shifter. Only time I can find is <2 ns (sn74lvc245a)
@MLM Two HackerRank contests coming up...
22:12
@MLM A resistive divide by two will take the 3.3v down to 1.65v, and also take 10 MHz down to 5 MHz. :)
MLM
MLM
@DavidKessner I'm not sure I understand how your suggestion fits in. here is a diagram
I made it yesterday when I thought I could use 1.8 standard but now I need to add the level shift layer probably before the chip
the controller is 1.8v
It is dinner time, and I know you usually leave soon so I will catch up tomorrow if you don't continue to be on.
23:13
@MLM It doesn't fit in. I was making a funny.
Anyone here know what language Nintendo Wii is programmed in? Google is not being very helpful...
@coding_corgi I would be very surprised if the majority of the stuff isn't in C/C++. But I have no direct information on that.
MLM
MLM
@DavidKessner :P alright cool, i've gotta do some hw but will start working on the level shifter in my next moment of spare time.
@DavidKessner Hmmmm... Anything else you think you know about Wii's runtime?
@DavidKessner DO you know what mono-runtime is?
@coding_corgi Nope. I don't really know anything about the Wii, but almost nobody uses anything but C/C++ in performance critical applications.
23:22
@DavidKessner I think it might be Unity...
23:48
guys how does one start to make a research paper (EE)
23:59
@vvavepacket Hmmm... I would like to know the answer to that question, maybe you should wait a little longer for the room to get a little more active...
