@T.E.D. after doing that math - Silver probably forgot about VPs taking over after dead or impeached presidents. He'd still be wrong without them but considerably less so
Although counting more recent time frames: in the past 30 years incumbents have rocked the vote (other than Trump). Bush Sr is a legit loss but Ford was hardly a real incumbent coming off an impeached president. And then we have to go back all the way to Hoover, who was struggling with the Great Depression so his loss was baked in to the fundamentals
But of course ignoring context to come up with a contrarian take based solely on qual data is very Nate

I can translate the definitions into English without too much difficulty. I even found equivalent terms in English for most of them. However, the one definitio...

@TheHistorian Taking a quick look at researching this and turns out there was a thing in heraldry to signify "this is not a place of honor" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abatement_(heraldry)

Huh. I'm not as interested in that stuff as many here, but I take a perverse enjoyment in that bit.
It looks like you wouldn't find a lot of historical examples of this, as they say displaying your coat-of-arms wasn't compulsory, so people who received dishonorable marks on theirs likely didn't do so.
That might explain not finding any examples.
