Q: Did any of the founding "fathers" beat their wives?

Evan CarrollWe often here about the racism of the founding fathers, and their status as slaveholders by extension. We know they had deplorable opinions on the status of women too, crafting a patriarchal legal system that viewed wives as the property of the husband. But, to what extent did they beat (or "disc...

Q: Kamchatka's first books

Aaron BrickKamchatka today has cultural projects like universities and museums, but in the early Russian period it was considered a pretty desolate place. Among other deficiencies, there was very little for the few literate residents to read. They could acquire manuscripts, and priests or monks could have h...

Q: How did the Russian Empire choose officers for Kamchatka?

Aaron BrickThe Russian Imperial army and navy had to build frontier outposts in very remote locations. Around 1800, the few forts and ports in Kamchatka might have a Lieutenant as commanding officer, a couple of subordinate officers, and a few dozen soldiers. An expansion in their numbers occurred with the ...

Q: Origin of the Petropavlovsk artillery company

Aaron BrickThe frontier port of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, was an army outpost which acquired an artillery company at some point before the garrison was dissolved in 1812 and the port became regional capital in 1813. According to Clerke, in 1779, "only a sergeant and ten soldiers lived there". In 1804, Löwe...

Q: Why was Red Army Officers and soldiers not prosecuted for War Crimes in WWII?

Suresh RamaswamyRecently I read Antony Beevor's "Berlin The Downfall:1945". The author has described wanton acts of loot, murder, arson and rape in the so-called liberated areas from German Occupation in Eastern-Central Europe - which after WWII was the Communist Bloc. The behaviour of the Red Army Soldiers, NK...

Q: What (primary) sources are there on the life of female slaves in Classical Greece, more specifically Athens?

Amy T.Since there was often a difference in what jobs male and female slaves were respectively made to work in (and there even being one exclusive to women, being a wet nurse), I was wondering whether, for example, female slaves were viewed and treated differently, whether they had, as would be my gues...

Here's a bit of history for you. Germany, the defending World Cup champions, just finished last in their group, and will not be moving on to the knockout rounds. The last time they were eliminated this early was 1938.
That is 80 years ago.

So, do you think there are any other parallels between events today and events in the late 1930s? ;-)

There was certainly some interesting history behind what happened in the Switzerland/Serbia match last Friday. You see all kinds of interesting little historical tidbits in World Cup matches.
For example, Group B this year was 3 neighboring countries all who have historically fought each other for control of the Iberian peninsula. ...and Iran. Iran spoiled the theme. Damnit, Iran.
Still you could have considered Group B the Reconquista group.
I won't place any significance behind the fact that after Portugal took an early lead, Spain ended up winning the group. Others can do that if they like. :-)
The story that's my favorite so far relates to Maradona.
Back in days of yore, before they could use video to review plays, he scored a goal by punching the ball into the net. This goal helped knock England out of the cup.
Since back then, "If the ref didn't see it, it didn't happen", this goal has become popularly known as The Hand of God
Fast forward 32 years to yesterday, and an elderly out-of-shape (some would say drugged-up) Maradona sees his Argentina pull out a late win, leans way out of the penalty box, and flips double-birds to all the Nigerian fans.
This stadium full of Nigerian fans can now tell all their grandkids that on this day they were personally "flipped off by the Hand of God". That's worth something right there. :-)
(BTW: Our crack team of lip-readers inform us that Maradona was yelling, "Your team is vastly inferior.", and most definitely not "Puto".)
Here's what Maradona was yelling:
