00:00 - 19:0019:00 - 00:00

19:00
@RoryMcCune well we are in NATO and EU so it could be someone was testing something
@TildalWave ...Aurora... (shhhhhh)
@LucasKauffman oooo - some good bits in that video (not really my kind of music though)
@RoryAlsop hehe neah, that's making a buzzing sound... but shhhh
@Hennes that's a painful one :/
Guess who is running an older FreeBSD server...
19:04
@Hennes heh you're saying crap to the vulnerability, or that they patched it?
@Hennes I tried upgrading a BSD once, I feel sorry for you
Upgrading usually goes well.
Just build a new world and kernel
And remember to run the merge program at the right times
Which is a heck of a work if you forget some switches
With some careful magic you can even go from FreeBSD 4 (32 bit) to FreeBSD 10 (64 bit)
Unlike Ubuntu which crashes every time you try to upgrade a single version
So, that's what happens when I leave for like 20 mins, 75 new messages? Dayum.
@RoryMcCune top secret spy plane pilots: "pilot 1: huh we have a new button, I wonder what it does...", "pilot 2: no don't, you remember what happened last time over Essex when we pressed a button?", "pilot 1: OK, let's first check where we are... Ljubljana, Slovenia...", "pilot 2: we're lost,... press it, press it!"
@TildalWave that'll be the one... or of course.... ALIENS!
19:09
@RoryMcCune 50% of our population are aliens, that really wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary :)
@TildalWave I always thought it was 99.999% that were aliens. Or as I call them, the 'Others'
@RoryAlsop we don't have so much fog around here :))
@TildalWave did you know that beer contains female hormones?
@LucasKauffman and it doesn't talk back... perfect companion then :)
@TildalWave Aren't you an animal lover? You should know that's the best companion :D
19:15
@TildalWave I realized it myself, if you drink too many beers you start moaning and you can't drive a car in decent way anymore
6
@LucasKauffman hehe
@Simon well true, but how would you ever appreciate them properly, if you don't walk on all four now and then too?
@TildalWave You walk on your animals?!?
@TildalWave Is he the first dog that successfully drove a car?
@Simon yup
19:21
@TildalWave Even though I'm a cat person, I admit that this dog is badass.
well... on a field of grass
@TildalWave Still :D
@Simon have you met @WesleyDavid?
@LucasKauffman Not yet, I don't think so. Why?
@Simon If you are a cat person you will really like him
19:23
@Simon Oh I have a cat too... one of each now, but we used to have dozens of each a few years back when we ran shelters still hands on
not just in shelters, I meant at home too
@LucasKauffman He's lazy and boring? :)
@TildalWave Nice, I own a Siamese, we're looking for a Bengal now.
@Simon I won't even ask who's the boss of the house :)
@TildalWave She jumps EVERYWHERE. We moved out to an apartment recently and everything is her playground.
@Simon have you tried with a box? they love them
@TildalWave She doesn't like them so much. She grew up with 2 other Siameses and one of them we would trap him in boxes for 30 mins. He loved it, never wanted to get out.
19:30
@Simon you'll find some way to tire her down ... mine is also crazy for any paper balls and brings them back if you throw them (she grew up with dogs)
@Simon he's actually really nice
@TildalWave awesome
Also if Jeff can has his Defcon star:
Anyone coming to BruCon this year?
4
@LucasKauffman for a cat yup, it was my first also and friends didn't believe me until I got her back here
@TildalWave That's awesome. They're pretty much like dogs too.
@LucasKauffman Cool, does he come here often?
@LucasKauffman Here you go
@Simon he's on serverfault
@Adnan ty ^^
19:31
@LucasKauffman Ah ok
what, a 4 minute-old question and nobody's jumped on the rep train yet?
@LucasKauffman Sick avatar, haha.
of course it's a dupe
@Gilles I did!
19:33
@Gilles ^
@Gilles dupe, not bothering
@Adnan Bad Adnan
Ugh, even I could have answered that question :(
@Adnan you're such a thief!
@Adnan you dirty repwhore
@Gilles Oh, I remember many situations that started with this sentence and ended in a very different way.
19:34
@Adnan ITYM that's what she said
@Adnan Kinky.
@LucasKauffman Well, to be honest, I didn't really wanted to answer. I wanted to clear the OP's misconception about dictionary attacks, but it didn't fit in one comment.
@Adnan just admit you like the rep, admit it
:p
Of course he does!
@LucasKauffman Oh, good memories.
19:36
Too many inside jokes in here.
@Simon That's what she said :'(
@Adnan Hell no she didn't say that.
I almost spilled my beer there
Haha
19:37
@LucasKauffman Well, it was a good one
@LucasKauffman isn't that some sort of criminal offence in Belgium?
@RoryMcCune fortunately I'm in Spain at the moment :p
@LucasKauffman What the hell?!
@LucasKauffman saved! holiday or work?
Only is it is beer. If it is lager it is encouraged.
19:39
@RoryMcCune holiday, two weeks of skydiving, exercise and beer
@LucasKauffman nice!
@RoryAlsop Daaamn! That was a quick closure.
@LucasKauffman skydiving + beer = not such a great combination...
@LucasKauffman Have I already said I hate you?
@AviD nah that's not allowed
19:40
@LucasKauffman How about to drink one while skydiving?
it also would be insane to jump drunk
@Simon there is a competition where you have to land on a chair and drink a beer as fast as possible
@LucasKauffman sure, but when you're drunk it would sound like a fantastic idea.
but that has ended in a few fatalities already
@LucasKauffman Really? Damn that sucks. The concept is awesome though.
@AviD I know one guy who tried to get on a plane after 3 beers and they suspended his license for 3 months
@Adnan but I love you :(
Also my next holiday will involve a gender check for @TerryChia
19:42
@Adnan one does what one can
@RoryAlsop Luckily, I slipped mine in just before it was closed.
4
No? Nobody?
@Adnan EEEEH that's what she said!
Come on, people! That was handed to you
@Simon Great job, new guy!
so there is no protection against dictionary attacks? — John The Ripper 2 mins ago
:|
lol
I regret answering
19:45
Nope, hence why all web applications get hacked.
19:55
@Adnan It's funny as his name is JTR
@Adnan I decided to be nice and add a short comment.
@LucasKauffman Oh! The irony! I've just actually noticed his name
@Simon You're always nice. Unlike @AviD
@Adnan I don't like this @AviD guy.
@Adnan I thought thats why you posted it here.... made me laugh.
@Simon s'cool, nobody does, and nobody cares.
@AviD I actually love you.
19:59
I am an insensitive, uncaring, thick-skinned manfreak, so not only do I not get upset about what other people think of me, I honestly don't care one way or the other.
@AviD You know what to do. Go bring your sexy pix drive
Mellon.
@AviD "thick-skinned manfreak" hmmm
@Adnan just like all guys have been accused by their women, since ever.
@AviD I try to be that way but deep inside, I do care what people think about me. I'm pretty sure that's the case for most people too, I have yet to meet someone who truly doesn't care.
20:00
Except with me its true. Probably my autism.
@RoryMcCune I've just thought the situation in the question where you wrote your latest answer is very interesting. It reminds me of the prisoner's dilemma.
10
A: How to use public WiFi safely?

AdnanUsing valid SSL/TLS connection by making sure you're always connecting to the https:// version of the website and that the browser isn't giving you any warnings or errors, is your first line of defence. An addon called HTTPS Everywhere can be very helpful here. The approach you're proposing (SSH...

@AviD Really?
@Adnan wanna add some info there?
(I hear it'll also make your downvote disappear LOL)
@TildalWave Nah, it's alright.
20:02
@Simon It has been discovered lately, just as I've been saying unscientifically for years, that autism is not a binary condition, it is a very wide scale, and most people are on it to some extent.
Most IT people are on it more than others.
@Adnan I thought to explain to people it's actually worth using OAuth sign-ins for non-SSL sites (like this one) ;)
@AviD I didn't know that.
Gotta go ttyl y'all.
@AviD Autistic spectrum. Just like with sexual orientation, it's a spectrum.
@Adnan hehe, how???
gender IS binary. At most it might be considered quantum. But not a spectrum...
Not counting furries, of course.
@AviD Ha?
@AviD Sexual orientation.
20:05
@AviD Qubits.
@RoryMcCune I'm more convinced now that it was a sonic boom... not anything like I heard before, but I just realized while walking the dog out now that there was something missing from the picture before - there was actually not a single plane to be seen on the skies, which is pretty incredible here... so I figure they had something scheduled
@Adnan sexual orientation is bound to gender.
@TildalWave A sonic boom can happen quite a long time after something fast travelled across the sky
I'm not claiming of course that one necessarily predefines the other, but the orientation is gender-defined.
@RoryAlsop Like @Adnan in bed.
Bazinga!
@AviD hahahahaha
20:07
@RoryAlsop Oh yes I understand physics ... I know, it's rather slow, as slow as sound is... which isn't much. But it's nigh impossible not to see at least say three planes on each side of the skies at any given moment in time here
and I remembered now there was actually none
@AviD I didn't get this one :(
(unless they all exploded and fell off at the same time) :))
@TildalWave That's what she said
@Adnan exactly.
God damn it! I should stop this!
20:09
@Adnan why me? you have @AviD here damnit
@Adnan @Rory was talking about things going really fast. I implied that your "activities" in bed go quickly enough to cause a sonic boom.
I once said "that's what she said" to a female coworker.
@Adnan lol. "Yes, yes it is what I said, I was there. Douche."
I really didn't use to say that before I started frequenting the DMZ.
@Adnan I'm going to start calling you @Boomer.
20:11
@AviD :(
Hopefully it will catch on :D
@Adnan seriously though, how did she respond?
@AviD She called me "immature" and "10-year old"
lol
@AviD @ the song?
@AviD mellon boomer?
20:16
abuse of mod powers ftw!
@AviD Oh come on!
bwahahaha
@Adnan you're fun to pick on.
@AviD Where?
@AviD you didn't account for hermaphrodites!?!
@ManishEarth heh, retracted it. sokay, somebody else starred it...
@TildalWave thats why I said qubits....
20:19
ah
@AviD I had a response for that. I said it my head, then decided to not say it.
hehehe
@AviD you'd have problems pairing them... or splitting afterwards :P
okay, so serious q. Shopping question...
password manager. recommendations?
@AviD write your own
20:21
I've been using password safe for a few years, now that I'm moving on to Win8 thought I'd see if there is something "better" for that.
@TildalWave oh, believe me, I've considered it.
@AviD then also do it, at least you'll know what your're dealing with
@TildalWave hmm, and I could store the encrypted values in my AD profile, for distributedness...
meh
@AviD get your own static IP, put an ancient box on and host it yourself, what's the problem?
you really don't need network speed here
@TildalWave not too much, no...
@AviD then you'll have to trust someone else... don't think it's something to recommend tho, unless it's perfectly clear you should avoid some
20:25
still, would rather find one that works well, covers most of my usecases, and integrates with everything I need.
2
@AviD that's what she said
you broke it.
better?
meh
@AviD why the long face, mellon?
20:52
@AviD I use KeePass. It works fine. I'm happy with it.
21:05
@Xander Thanks. So I'm thinking I will keep it on a network share, so that it can be reached by all my machines in the network. Next I have to figure out how to use it outside of the network - but then I will be looking at phone/tablet anyway.
I doubt there is support for that?
@AviD I do the same...My db is in the cloud so I can reach it from any machine. There is an Android interface for it, but I haven't used it, (yet, at least) so I can't vouch for it, and I don't know about apps for other phone/tablet OSes.
@Xander hmm, keep it online, instead of local network... interesting. would still need to keep a local copy, yknow for sunny days.
@AviD Yup, for sure.
okay, then I would just need to worry about the apps, besides cloud access. I like that. Thanks!
so.... any WP8/WRT apps for password management? I should be asking @Iszi or @RoryMcCune....
@AviD Not sure, but a quick search didn't find any. :-( Yeah, @RoryM or @Iszi would definitely be more knowledgeable than I am in that area.
21:15
I don't do password management on my phone. Maybe someone's forked KeePass, though?
Looks like no, based on the KeePass site.
@Iszi yeah, saw that. Or rather, didn't.
LastPass has a WP7 client.
Aren't those usually forwards-compatible?
@Iszi never need to access any passworded sites from your phone?
@AviD Usually any sites worth punching a password into are worth viewing on a real computer. I haven't totally fallen in love with mobile web browsing yet.
@Iszi dont know...? Not sure I like the idea of LastPass. Thats where they keep your passwords for you, right? Dont like the loss of (perceived) control.
21:18
@AviD Correct, and agreed. Just covering the options.
@Iszi sometimes you just need to get access.... and then there also apps for that.
@AviD I'm pretty sure he hasn't met you yet.
lol
@AviD But wtf, Shwarma is Turkish
Also, Shesh Besh is Persian
By the way (by the way of by the way, I never understood the actual usage of by the way), Rook doesn't seem alright to me today.
21:34
@Adnan and other days he does??
@Adnan yeah, a lot of those things are more "Middle Eastern" than specifically Israeli.
@AviD I must say yes. Most of the times I read his answers and all I can think about is "wow, neat stuff".
@Adnan yeah, he has some good stuff, but I always need to put it through a bigass filter.
@AviD Speaking of which, I'm dying for some Shwarma! We have 0 middle eastern (Levantine, specifically) restaurants in my city.
We only have Kebab places.. shitload of kebab places. Like one every 100 meters.
you're welcome to come visit here. I'll take you to some good places.
well, not good, shwarma places.
Speaking of Israelis and YouTube, this is a bit old, but always fun.
21:39
@AviD I only have my home country passport. Which makes a bit difficult to go there
@AviD I've always wanted to visit actually
@Adnan Finnish?
Finlandish.... Findlandian?
@AviD Nah, I'm not Finnish. I only live here. I refuse to take any nationality that is not my birth nationality.
@Adnan ahhh
@AviD Plus, it's kind of against my political stands. I mean come on! You live in a country for 4-5 years and then you become the same as the natives. It's ridiculous! You need years and years to learn the customs, the history, etc.
That's why multiculturalism doesn't always work
hehe, cant say I care.
I see it mostly as a government formality.
21:43
@Xander Ahaaaa.. it's your playlist!
I was wondering why they have OWASP and Rory videos there
@Adnan heh, the penny just dropped for me too.
@Adnan LOL. Yup.
That's my "Security" playlist.
Didn't mean to link to the whole list actually. <Shrug />
@Xander Now we can stalk your YouTube comments
@Adnan LOL! I don't know that I've ever actually written a comment on YouTube.
21:50
@Xander Yup, you haven't.
@Xander I have just checked with NSA :D
@Adnan :-P
22:06
and of course! He pulled the "I write exploit code, so you know shit" card.
22:27
@AviD Had good Shwarma in Jerusalem. Very good!
22:57
@Adnan Hey now, often times naturalized US citizens know more about our history than those of us born here. They actually have to learn it!
@ScottPack That is indeed the truth.
