4:00 PM
@Adnan people move to git from svn, then use git in just the same way they did svn. If you view it that way you don't leverage any benefit from having distributed repositories. git allows you to have a hierarchy of repos, and go branch crazy . Its a bit scary, but moving away from the feeling that 'the repo is the truth' is liberating.
@Adnan regarding hierarchies: codebeamer.com/cb/displayDocument/…

@TildalWave Yeah, turns out I have an old SO answer that was moved to SF, it had 5 upvotes. So once I signed up SF account, I had 151 rep.
@TildalWave The Tor question.

@Adnan what do you want me to do about it? I've upvoted both your answer and the question, even tho I think the question is rather meh and was probably answered dozens of times before

@TildalWave Write your own point of view.
@lynks Well, I think it all depends on the project itself. Sometimes you don't have freedom to go crazy with your own repo. I think once we start a new project and use git in the beginning, then we can utilize the full benefit of git.

@Adnan peal -> peel

@Adnan I have none besides what you already said. Maybe you could emphasise a bit more that the encryption is added to layers node to node and the underlying encryption isn't touched (and indeed couldn't be without running a custom CA on the network and have these forged certificates installed in TOR browser), tho you already said that anyway
Actually, saying this, there's really nothing stopping TOR from doing exactly this

4:08 PM
@lynks Damn English!
@lynks Fixed

@TildalWave thats a good point about the browser bundle being compromised with evil certificates. of course it only affects connections that would be encrypted without TOR...
@TildalWave when you say added to layers node to node, I might be confused. But TOR does all the encrypting before the stream leaves your machine.

@lynks yeah poor choice of words, but if you think of a client as the initial node then it's kinda true... but maybe better said differently, not to cause further confusion

@Polynomial So my answer is shit by the image is good? :(

@Adnan haha
no :P
but you get the +1 already just for the image

I'm going to repwhore an old answer of mine in a comment...

4:20 PM
Hmm.. interesting. Somebody doesn't think that my answer is good enough. A couple of minutes ago there was an upvote on the question followed by one on the other answer.
Damn it! That's what rep-trains do to you! They make you obsessed.
@lynks Do it!

@Adnan Done. The time I spent in gimp must be worth more than the +7 :P

@Adnan I've seen it but the upvote on the other answer was from me in this case... tho I still have an upvote on yours... anyway, doesn't matter IMO, you're rep-whoring pretty well today :))

@lynks Awww! I've already upvoted it a while ago. I cannot upvote it again :(

@Adnan ahh shame that our colours dont quite match!
(diagram wise)

@lynks Do you get paid monthly or hourly?

4:24 PM
@Adnan monthly, why

@lynks Just curious

it always bugged me that I forgot to colour in the little 'fold-over' triangles in that diagram...

4:38 PM
@Adnan ...wut?

God damn it!!!!
When is SE gonna fix that profile views bug in Data Explorer?!!
I really wanna understand the dynamics of profile views here.
I've been here for 6 months with less than 100 answers, and I have 540 views.
I'd like to associate that with the number of comments, number of upvotes on comments, number of answers, accepted answers, etc..

@Adnan Why? I thought the whole idea behind that 1k Established User privilege is that you can spare visitors the headache of reading your whole profile?

@TildalWave Take this for an example.
You and @lynks have very close profile views count, yet he's way older than you here. He has more questions than you, and you have only 7 answers more than him.
Why?
I just find that interesting, even intriguing.

@Adnan Lynks' profile has no sig ... and that's apparent since he's over 1k rep when you hover over his gravatar
@Adnan And I mention beer in my sig ;)

@TildalWave So you're saying that people hover over your name, see that your sig is interesting, and then click to view your profile afterwards?

4:51 PM
@Adnan could be, dunno... i just think there's no SQL that's gonna establish that

@TildalWave I do stuff like that to have money to buy beer, I'm pretty sure I could come up with something.

@Adnan how would you establish if visitors like some gravatar better and click on it more because of that, or if it's just a case of a lot of people having no clue where my country is (sometimes even I wonder)... ? There's a lot of subjective triggers here that you won't be able to quantify
Or if I just end up annoying more people (probably true)?

@TildalWave fixed

@lynks hehehee

@TildalWave Oh.. I wasn't meaning your claim about "see sig then click", I don't think that's true. I meant exploring other reasons. Such as the comment count, and the quality of the comments.
@lynks Subtle :D
@Terry Oh yeah! I've just noticed that I joined the Pundit club.

4:57 PM
@TildalWave I have updated it again, according to your calculations it should now be irresistible.

@Adnan well I'd say I'm a fair bit more active here since I registered than @lynks is (not saying anything quality-wise mind you, just quantity)... and since the number of viewers is constantly increasing, I guess that could be the culprit... @lynks had to deal with lesser site's exposure than I did
@lynks nice touch, tho mentioning me might prove the opposite of click-worthy
@Adnan while on that subject, why not create a query that would tell you how far from that badge one is? I'm curious for myself for example

@lynks Reminds me of Old Spice ads

@Adnan You're on a boat?

@ScottPack Yes

5:12 PM
Straight and direct

The other one lets me know where to direct people for cmoment upboats.

@ScottPack *hat tip*

@Adnan You see, according to my SF pundit query I can see that I need 4 more comments. I also can see that I have 4 comments that are sitting at 4 votes.

@ScottPack Huh. So I just realized that I have a fairly low UserId value. I didn't think I was here for the private beta, but I must have been. That aside, I'm still nowhere near the pundit badge. :-)

@Xander Wow, that is really low. I was impressed with my 618.

5:18 PM
@Xander and now you're closer. Now you need 2 comment upvotes to get it

@ScottPack that one kinda doesn't work correctly ... not sure why but it says I have one comment with a score of 4, one with a score of 2, and a few with 1... that's clearly not even close

@TildalWave They're not real-time

@TildalWave Yeah, the most recent dump is 2 days old. Assholes

Damn it! One more answer and the Tor question will reach the SuperCollider Top 5
In addition to one upvoting loop
@ScottPack I think that Michael Hampton and you will get the mod positions.

5:24 PM
@ScottPack Ah that explains it also... but the most problematic was that I was running that query on meta.sec.se

@Adnan We'll know in about 1.5 hours
@TildalWave That'll do it!

@ScottPack Come on, it's pretty obvious. Your stats are very appealing, his rep is attractive as well.
I've just put myself in the regular voter's shoes

Apparently, I'm quite a bit off... One with 34 upvotes, one with 12, one with 5, 2x4, 3x3,...

@LucasKauffman 40mm objective lens. That should provide some pretty crisp brightness.

@Adnan it does
plus it's get a leveler inside
and a light
for during darker periods

5:27 PM
@ScottPack Oh crap! I missed Tom O'Connor

@Adnan Not hard.

@ScottPack I actually went through all the candidates stuff. Old reviews, comments, answers... I agree with you on the one your removed.

Dude definitely knows his stuff, but yeah.

@LucasKauffman But actually you're lucky it's mounted on a gas piston. It would be shattered on a springer.

@Adnan why is that?

5:29 PM
@LucasKauffman A springer has a high backward and forward recoil. It needs "special" scopes.

ah didnt know that

@LucasKauffman Yeah, that's why when you shoot a springer you use an open-hand hold. Your hand below the rifle should stay open and the rifle should just rest on it.
@Lucas Oh good, I found an image.

@Adnan I wonder if we will be able to buy gunpowder filled 3D printer cartridges any time soon :)
And questions here like Is it better to use 1200dpi printed bullets than 600dpi ones?
3

5:51 PM
@TildalWave Well, you can already do that at home without a printer.

6:09 PM
@Adnan LOL..Thanks. :-)
@ScottPack Yeah, I was a bit shocked when the realization hit me. Interestingly enough, it doesn't look like the hyper-early users are particularly active. I'm the only one with a UserId under 20 with more than 1000 rep, and I've only gotten there in the last few months.
It looks like most of them still lurk, but perhaps not much more.

@Xander Yeah. I feel like The Rories and Avi are the only properly active early users

@Xander Let's do some SQLing..

@ScottPack Yup, and I remember Maker asking questions pretty early, and Graham Lee, but then he sort of went away.
@Adnan Sounds good! :-)

@Xander Only 11 out of those 20 have logged in this year.

6:28 PM
@Adnan Yup, and only 5 this month...However that's still a pretty healthy rate I'd say for folks who've been members for over two and a half years now, and not managed to build reps of more than a few hundred points.

@Xander :O You're the only one of those 20 with activity this year.

Ordered my Ripstik for Corporate Fridays. #faceplantingwithstyle

@JeffFerland What the hell is that machine?!

@JeffFerland I want one!!!

6:34 PM
@JeffFerland ewww a FB link... :))

@TildalWave Get used to it

@JeffFerland hehe yeah... but not really sure why it opens it so damn slow to me... can't you move CDN back to Earth?

@TildalWave That's on my to-do list for next week.

@TildalWave Hey, the ISS want internet too!

@AntonyVennard They tweet there

6:36 PM
@TildalWave I imagine they also google "how do I hijack a satellite?" and build in some defensive mechanisms!

So, do we want to close this or let the rep-train go choo-choo?

Q: Is my computer being hacked? How can I tell with wireshark?

JulianSo last night I was using openVPN via my personal cloud server to watch some Hulu. About 15 minutes into the movie I noticed my network stats were download: ~250 MB upload: ~1.8 GB This is according the the openVPN software. I paused my movie and the download stopped but my upload jumped fro...

How we deal with tweeting at FB: we let out the fox.

@Iszi hehehe wireshark on 2GB upload? something is off there
@JeffFerland cute one, looks like it caught a bird... that's tweeting with firefox?

@TildalWave That's Facebook Fox. Cooler than Firefox, stops annoying tweets (dead bird), and I need to go get my camera and take some more photos today :)

hmm maybe not firefox... or a public beta
@JeffFerland any people there too? :P

6:42 PM
@TildalWave That was taken on Sunday. But yeah, lots of people. Fox don't give a shit.

@JeffFerland never seen a fox that would be so relaxed among people, pretty neat that

6:54 PM
The gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is a mammal of the order Carnivora ranging throughout most of the southern half of North America from southern Canada to the northern part of South America (Venezuela and Colombia). This species and the closely related Channel Island fox (Urocyon littoralis) are the only living members of the genus Urocyon, which is considered to be among the most primitive of the living canids. Though it was once the most common fox in the east, and still is found there, human advancement allowed the red fox to become more dominant. The Pacific States still have ...
well this explains it, they can only be found in America

Hi @iszi we're having fun with QONQR :) there's a load of legion around but I think we're getting the upper hand finally...

@RoryMcCune Cool! Good to know! Faceless already pretty much dominated my home zone, but I've been helping expand. I'll probably hit level 100 in the next day or so! After that, I need to work on upgrades so I can finally go head-to-head with the east coast guys.

@Xander Graham's a punk.

I've gotten a bunch of my family in on it too, which has been really helpful.
Still a bummer there's no Android client. Had three or four people over this weekend who would have joined if there was.

@Iszi we've got a mix here, faceless in the west, legion in the east, with bits of swarm around, but not that many active players.. we seem to be locked into a battle with one of the L100 Legion guys but as we get towards L100 ourselves, the battles swinging our way I think
@Iszi yeah that would be cool, sounds like they're working on it, but slowly. I was trying to recruit @RoryAlsop for the cause on his work iPad but apparently he's busy (pshaw!)
@Iszi we did recruit a friend of ours who has Marions old Windows phone :)

7:00 PM
Speaking of busy....

@ScottPack you are/are not? BTW did you get approached by the nessus book dude?

I'll be moving to Columbus, OH in a couple of months. So if anyone has any job leads let me know. I'm willing to entertain telecommute.
@RoryMcCune I need more detail and/or context.

@RoryMcCune Recruiting's really handy for the upgrades. Otherwise, they're expensive in terms of credits. Of course, I may just break down and pay for a few at some point.

@ScottPack there was a guy who sent out a mail to me and @LucasKauffman from PackT publishing looking for someone to write a book on Nessus, who said he found me via My Sec.SE profile. I wondered if he approached you too as you've answered nessusy questions on here before.
@Iszi yeah I will admit we've traded a little cash for cubes. I don't feel too bad as they're indie devs so it helps them keep ramen on the table :)

@RoryMcCune I don't recall seeing that, no.

7:04 PM
@ScottPack he was looking for 80-100 pages on Nessus, but frankly I couldn't really see what could be written that isn't already in the Tenable docs...

It depends.

@ScottPack also the advance was $600 which is a crappy day rate for that amount of work :)

Yeah
Publication is fun, but not for that.
@RoryMcCune My experience is that the docs tend to be very high level and broad strokes. Kind of like, "This is the User Add Screen. The "Add User" button is the button you use to add a user."

indeed I want to write something at some point would be an interesting experience but I doubt it would be lucrative. I was thinking of doing a book on "ruby for security testers" as it's not been done before (AFAIK)

I think the Nessus UnPacked type stuff is more suitable to things like blog posts.
For example, check out that one I did on the sec.se blog about chain certs.

7:06 PM
@ScottPack true, some of the PDFs on things like credentialed scanning are relatively good but I guess I've not looked too much at the docs past that. the problem with doing it as a book is that if you have to start from first principals, the basics would cover most of your scope..

None of that shit is discussed anywhere
yeah

@ScottPack so I guess maybe if done as a "cookbook" style of things the docs won't tell you it could be useful...
nice to see someone clearly state their affiliation before answering a question about their product

Q: Is TextKey SMS 2 factor authentication secure against cell phone cloning?

JohnnyI came across this website today that implements SMS based authentication that works "opposite" most SMS authentication methods. In typical SMS authentication, the provider sends you an access code that you use to log on to the site. The TextKey system works the other way around - when you log o...

@RoryMcCune Yeah, I could see that.
So, going back to me. I know all of the Big4 have offices in Columbus. If any of you auditors hear of anything let me know.

7:26 PM
@Adnan stop trolling on Physics with youtube videos, that onion question has rep trained :P

@TildalWave Well, it's a pretty good video.
@TildalWave Not yet. That question still needs one answer! Damn it!! One answer!

@Adnan just teasing, yup it is
@Adnan then add it, you can write more than one answer to it ;)
add how technically, TOR could be the largest MiTM network implementation, that'll freak peeps out LOL

@TildalWave There's no justification, I could just edit my own answer. But you know, if I were to write another answer, I'd go in details on the public key structure of Tor, maybe a bit on the tcp connection formed.

@Adnan make sure to include DFD and that it's in matching colours :))

A: Is my computer being hacked? How can wireshark reveal if I am being hacked?

schroederTo clarify, in your situation, you likely have already been hacked, and malicious software is sending traffic. Wireshark can help to confirm this and to characterize the type of infection. Turn off as many services as you can, close all browsers, then confirm that the upload is occurring. Turn o...

I'm not sure I appreciate this guy's last few answers...

@TildalWave I was just about to say something regarding that

7:36 PM
"you likely have already been hacked" ... then goes on to say "turn off as many services..." in the next sentence.
so... it could've been any of those services, but he's still likely to have been hacked

@TerryChia I have all the phones! I have a box with all the nokias from the 2nd mobile they sold all the way to the 6210i - which one is my generation?

Damn! The opening titles of American Horror Story Season 1... amazing! A pure genius mixture of visual and acoustic stimuli. Doesn't get repetitive so you cannot predict the next drop. Amazing!
Great way to waste 1 minute

7:51 PM
@RoryAlsop I think the oldest phone I have is a ~2004 vintage Communicator.

@RoryAlsop does that box you store them in appear bigger on the inside than it does on the outside and is painted blue?

@RoryAlsop Shouldn't this become a CW already?

There are lots of good tips, but they belong on separate questions (and some would be more at home on Cryptography)

@Gilles Well, something should be done to it.

> Your close vote has been recorded

7:57 PM
@Gilles Ditto

someone should make a blog post out of it before it gets deleted. It is a good collection of tips (mostly), but it isn't being kept up-to-date, and isn't organized well

@Gilles and I hate that almost nobody is utilizing the edit functionality.
@Tildal Your prophecy has come true. We're now #6

@Gilles I will try and make time to do that. If anyone knows crypto, feel free to tell me if any of it is extra important or not important :-)

8:22 PM
@ScottPack - what was the result? Do you get punished forever more? Or do you get a t-shirt for standing in the election?

@RoryAlsop T-shirt.

8:46 PM
@ScottPack yikes tough luck :( eliminated in the last round, but you were right, results follow reputation

@ScottPack I know this is not my place to say this, but I'm greatly disappointed.
Your stats were amazing!

@TildalWave The vast majority of people who vote are going to be basing it on a combination of rep and who has or hasn't pissed them off.

Flags, meta contributions, edits.
I cannot even trust someone as a mod if they don't have the sportsmanship badge!

I'm 18 edits away from Copy Editor. :)

@Adnan what if you're mostly the only one answering to questions?

8:49 PM
@TildalWave Come on! You know better not ask this. This doesn't really happen that often.

@ScottPack Well congratulations on the t-shirt then dude. They are mighty soft and comfortable
@Adnan (had to go and check if I had it :-)

@Adnan Dunno I'd find it pretty impossible to gather 100 upvotes on other answers where I have my answer with upvotes too... I actually mostly upvote all competing answers (if they're any good obviously)... lost a few rep train battles because of that too

@RoryAlsop It gives me an idea that you do contribute by answering, and you're not selfish.

@Adnan No - I agree, I just wasn't sure if I had got it :-)
loads of people give far better answers than me, so I'd be mad not to upvote them

@RoryAlsop Damn it! I want a Sec.SE t-shirt.

8:52 PM
@Adnan I think sec.se might not be the best example site for that... but sure, on SF it's different with so many people answering

@Adnan they are so sec.se

@Adnan The t-shirt we're talking about is genero StackExchange.

Events are the best way - I must have given out 40 t-shirts at different events

@Adnan I do have a sec.se shirt, though.

@ScottPack I got a nice one for standing in Bicycles election :-)

8:53 PM
@RoryAlsop This will make my 3rd. They hold their color well, very comfy.

@RoryAlsop There no events around here! Hmmm.. I wonder if our company's Hackathon counts.

@Adnan - if you help to host a security event, or are speaking at one, or even if you can get speakers to wear them, you can request shirts

I don't really feel the interest in advertising SE as a brand, but they are great as an undershirt.

@ScottPack They are very good - although I am always amused they get delivered in cardboard boxes

I very rarely wear my sec.se shirt, though. I don't want to wear it out.

8:54 PM
Yeah, the plain SE ones I occasionally wear, but I'd prefer to wear my sec.se one

@Adnan You can ask for t-shirts and other swag if you're organizing some related event... not sure BBQs or fishing trips will do tho ;)

@RoryAlsop I think they use paperboard envelopes now

@ScottPack I think it's in my interest to advertise Security.SE. I want it to grow more, so when I tell someone I'm active here, it would sound better.
@TildalWave I was thinking of our company's Hackathon. 20-30 people hacking stuff (electrical boards, scripts, and basically anything hackable)

@Adnan you organize any workshops?

@Adnan :-)

8:58 PM
@RoryAlsop Actually, if I'm being honest, not 100% of the reason I'm here is because I want to make the Internet a better place.
A good (25-30%) portion of the reason I'm here is to give a little push for my career
My Stackoverflow profile played a role in getting my current job

@Adnan probably has to be an open event, not something for closed circles tho... but maybe if you ask nice enough... tell them I've sent you and if they ask who? you're talking with the right ones :))

@Adnan Oh, you might like to see this. :) meta.stackoverflow.com/a/182079/25617

That's why I like editing, flagging, voting, and I'm very strict about them. I want this site to be better.
@ScottPack I'm so happy that I'm very comfortable with the idea that I'd be a bad mod, so I don't have to worry about that.

:)
Oy vey! Time to go home.
@RoryAlsop @RoryMcCune Do either of you guys have an opinion on ISSA and whether it's worth joining?

@ScottPack Kind of depends what you want and what presence they have where you are. In Scotland they are a bit skewed towards one of the big-4, although I have attended a couple of independent events of theirs.

9:08 PM
@ScottPack <edit ninja'd>

ISACA seem to have more events here, and a wider spread of speakers

9:28 PM
That's kind of what I figured. It seems like ISSA may be more active around here, but they're also half the price. :)

@ScottPack I would have a look at which groups are most active, look at the speaker list for the previous year and choose that way :-)

Phaw!
At least I know that both groups seem reasonable to you guys.
I would hate to stupidly pay dues to the Hackin9 equivalent

@Gilles @RoryAlsop re the crypto mistakes q - I disagree. I think this is a perfect example of one of those rare q's that actually should be a CW, it is definitely ontopic here, and I think the first answer (and some of DW's comments on the q) show why it should be here, and not crypto.
the mistakes are in using the crypto, (usually) not in implementing an algorithm (indeed, that in itself is one of the common mistakes - but you wouldnt get that at crypto).

@AviD so you think a reopen, and a blog post?

@RoryAlsop oh, didnt realize you did close it.

9:40 PM
Oh - odd thing happened at work. We have a new long term contractor. He plays in a band, so we got chatting. His bass player is the cousin of the girl I'm going to Download Festival with, and who provided the wild strawberry plants in my garden. How odd.

Blog post I think is great, but yeah I think it should be opened, CW (eventually), and more importantly - locked for historical significance.

@AviD All mod decisions are reversible (except those special ones)

@RoryAlsop how about moving it to meta? just a though

@RoryAlsop i love it how the circle closes. Makes you think the programmers of the universe either have a point, or just like making design shortcuts.
just had a meeting today, with a guy who turns out went to uni with me. We were both shocked I recognized him - only had a a couple classes with him.

@AviD hahaha

9:42 PM
@RoryAlsop weird co-incidence! Sounds like your making the right hiring decisions though "so first interview question, what instrument do you play and what's your favourite band" (with the obvious disqualification for anything vaguely related to one direction in the answer!)

@TildalWave definitely not, its not about the site.
@RoryMcCune haha, my daughter would slap me for that.

@RoryMcCune He plays in an extraordinarily mellow band - watch the 3 videos on www.crookedmouth.co.uk

@AviD well it was just a thought... basically, because it kinda reminds me of some posts there, like the memes one

but their logo is a mask - so they're obviously in positive points with me already

@AviD but they did a cover of "teenage kicks" a baaaad cover at that.

9:44 PM
@RoryAlsop I really dont think its not constructive, it's like a FAQ for the Crypto tag. in fact, might be worth editing a link into the tag wiki...

I seriously need to follow up on my long tern desire to learn how to play harmonica.

Do it - I love good harmonica. I play bad harmonica. Badly

@AviD I had that on a job last year, sat in the same room as a unix admin for 3 days and only when I was leaving site we realised we'd been at primary school together!

I mean how difficult can it be? It's only breathing...

@ScottPack and then join Blues Traveller!
@RoryAlsop if you play bad harmonica badly, does that mean you play it well?

9:45 PM
@AviD Would that that were so...
@AviD - happy if you want to reopen. Could do with a little tidying perhaps, as @Gilles said

@ScottPack I'm too sec.se for my stackexchange shirt.
@ScottPack sorry about the tshirt only consolation prize. I think you would have made a good King of the BOFH.
5
@RoryAlsop well, what do you think? I havent really had time to look, just walked in the house and responded to that first....

@RoryAlsop Does key really matter?

@Adnan Don't mean to sound dickish, but your stance is all wrong. you have it backwards.
also you're holding it all with your muscles, instead of your bones.

@AviD I thought @Gilles point was valid - it's a bit of a list of stuff

@AviD What?! Do you think that I'm the one in the pic?
@AviD Also, I don't mean to sound diskish as well, I don't think you know what you're talking about.

9:51 PM
@RoryAlsop yes, but I think (not sure) that this is a case worth making an exception for, with the appropriate disclaimer.

That's a spring-powered air rifle. It has a backward and forward recoil. That's how it should be held.

@AviD @ScottPack in case you've not seen the reference Avi is implying that this is him... youtube.com/watch?v=39YUXIKrOFk

its not asking for comparison, or best-of, or recommendation... kindof like an anti-FAQ of crypto.
@Adnan oh, its not? sorry....

@AviD Come on! Really? Do you think I'm that old?

@Adnan not sure what you mean by forward recoil, but the leg planting doesnt provide enough counter-push. the line of recoil should be as much as possible to the center of the angle between your legs.
and as much as possible, your entire body should be planted on bone, not floating in the air held up only by muscles.

9:53 PM
@AviD Oh, I thought you were talking about the hand thing. If you check the context, the whole point of the pic was to show Lucas the open-hand hold.

@RoryMcCune but with a SE shirt... ;-)

It has nothing to do with the stance of the guy.

@Adnan okay, but I was talking about the stance + arm placement (not the hand).

@AviD But did you really think I was the one in the pic?

the elbow should be firmly locked on the opposite knee. the rest of the body should be planted all the way down, for maximum stability and recoil control.
@Adnan the guy has a hat!

9:55 PM
@AviD So?

cant really tell.... and tbh didnt look that closely.

@RoryMcCune Seriously. I'm not that much younger than you.
4

@AviD :| Now you're insulting me

@ScottPack it was more that I wasn't sure it had made it to the states, I'm guessing it did :) (sorry we UK'ians came up with that, not one of our best musical exports)

hahaha, and this time I didnt even try :D
anyway @Adnan if you do go rifle-shooting, and want to be more accurate - try those two tips, see if there's a difference.

9:57 PM
@ScottPack also nice self-entry into "old people of Sec.SE" I'm sure our founder @RoryAlsop will want to welcome you to the group :op

@RoryMcCune no no no, don't say that. Fred is high hat classics!

@RoryMcCune When do your mid 30s start? Because I think that may be happening shortly.

@ScottPack hmm after 32 probably... I'm just slightly dreading the impending end of my 30's ..

@RoryMcCune That's what I figured. So, yeah, I'll be in my mid 30s pretty shortly.

@RoryA @AviD I don't mean to intervene, but shouldn't somebody talk to makerofthings7 about his low acceptance rate (64.1%)?
He's not a new member here, so he obviously knows how the site works.
and I can't believe that he asked 123 questions and non of the answers worked for him.

10:04 PM
He often answers questions himself.

10:15 PM
@Adnan The way I get it his questions are mostly concerning projects he's currently on and he needs to research them anyway, so yeah he'd answer a lot of them also. Personally, I don't have quarrels with that, but sure acceptance will be low unless he starts accepting his own answers, but I don't think he feels like he's short on rep points

@TildalWave You don't get rep when you accept your own answers.
@TildalWave Also, I have a not-so-nice opinion about that kind of questions. Yes, I've noticed the same you noticed. Same behaviour on other sites as well.

@Adnan didn't know that, but maybe he felt on those there's not a single answer to choose from and promote it as any better than some others with it
@Adnan Frankly, I had big problems accepting answers from both my questions. Both for different reasons, but I still did it for completeness

@TildalWave Acceptance isn't about which question is good or bad, that's what's voting for. When you accept an answer, it means that it worked for you the most. There always gotta be one answer that worked for you the most. The one that solved your problem, the one that you found easier to understand.
@TildalWave You see, that's what I mean. It's not easy to just choose one of the answers. But there's always that question that you felt that worked the best for you

@Adnan which is sometimes a process and not immediately apparent

I guess I'll stop here. Otherwise, I'd just reach the point where I'd spill my not-so-nice opinions about that kind of asking behaviour.

10:22 PM
@Adnan But why not ask him directly then to go through his questions he didn't accept any answers for? If you need contact, he's on LinkedIn and in my connections. Maybe he just moves on and forgets... don't think he's arrogant or anything like that

I know there are a few users who ask a question as an excuse, or a platform, to be able to write their answer. For the most part, this specific user is as @TildalWave says - he gets stuck, so he asks a question. But he doesnt sit around waiting, he keeps researching - and sometimes - often - comes up with the right answer himself, even before anyone answers him.
Personally, I think that behavior is exemplary.
as far opposite to giv meh teh codez as you can get.

@AviD Part of the reason why I wanted to connect with him on LinkedIn ... I never actually used it, but you never know... @Adnan I don't wanna sound overly protective here, I really don't know the guy, but he seems fairly reasonable and curious, inquisitive even in his questions, which I respect because he asks mostly about stuff he's implementing or considering to... gives a whole new perspective in comparison to, say, hit and run questions...

absolutely. I always find his questions interesting, and usually well thought out... even if sometimes off topic, or extremely limited.
makes me curious what he's working, sounds like it would be interesting....

10:41 PM
@AviD Wanted to ask once, when I was answering that iframe question and we then had a discussion in comments that spilled to DMZ even

@RoryMcCune and @ScottPack - I dunno. You young whippersnappers. I'm about to celebrate the ultimate birthday of life the universe and everything! And you guys are mere Thurties. ;-P

Oh no, @Tildal and @AviD, please don't get me wrong. He seems like a very smart guy. You can see it in his questions, my objection is on a very different area. Again, I don't want go through the exact details.

@RoryAlsop oh I'll be there soon enough, too. Don't remind me.

@Adnan Well, this has been discussed on meta.so a fair bit, and there is nothing we can do to force people to accept. In fact one of the reason accept rate was removed from under the avatar was to stop people picking on those who didn't accept enough posts. It would be nice if everyone did, but some folks won't - for whatever reason.

I, too, find many of his questions interesting and fun to think about.

10:45 PM
@AviD Yay! Beers and cocktails! (Delivered by attractive young waitresses in beach bars...)

@Adnan If you'd like to ask of him to try and accept more answers on questions he didn't then I'd say go for it, it makes sense... I also don't think he'd mind you asking that

meh. For me, would probably be more like a handful of pills, force-fed by a matronly attendant, right before attaching my tubes again (feeding and post-feeding).

@AviD perv
;-P

hahaha, waat? I meant like in an old age home.

oh - yeah - sure :-)

10:48 PM
@TildalWave Nah, I don't want to intervene. I just wanted to ask the mods about their opinion. I really don't wish to discuss the matter with him. Mainly because I know that it would lead to the inevitable discussion about my opinion of his questions.

@AviD you? even I'm older than you... and besides, remember that dating age range only widens when you're getting older... some chicks are actually smart enough not to want to wait too long to enjoy it :)) :P

hehe
yeah, but remember that how old you are has less to do with your age, and more to do with how many kids you have.

@RoryAlsop Mmmm.. sounds nice. Where is that?

By that measure, I believe I'm the oldest one here.

@Adnan Neah I don't think so. He's here every now and then... doubt he has time to chitchat and protect his stance, doubt he even has any on this issue, probably just moves on

10:50 PM
@AviD Do single cells count?

hehe

Because I have a lot of those.. like.. a lot

@Adnan only if you're a chimera

@Adnan I was introduced to a wonderful establishment on the promenade in Tel Aviv called Mike's Place! Live music, attractive staff, security chat :-)
no really, there was a fair bit of sec.se chat

@RoryAlsop Coming to you.... THE DMZ!! LIIIIIVE!!!

10:53 PM
@AviD hahahahahahahaha
We're too sec.se for this bar! Too sec.se for this bar, too sec.se by far!

Thankfully, that was NOT the type of music playing.

Took the kids to see this guy on Saturday. He was incredibly inspirational:

@RoryAlsop Nice!!

Also this guy, who played the guitar on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street:

@RoryAlsop very cool

10:57 PM
And also this guy - who did a masterclass on speed shredding:
The kids sat right down the front - delighted!
After it all, Eilin declared she really likes Jazz!

@RoryAlsop this is interesting because that's what I learned to do on my own when going from other instruments to guitar and having plenty of years of experience with Bach on flute and trumpet... kinda felt only natural to exercise with pentatonic scales on guitar then also
was also that moment when my father started believing I can actually play a guitar LOL

11:12 PM
@RoryAlsop that must have made you happy.

11:29 PM
oh damnit I meant the previous video, definitely not the last one... I can't pull that off not even close
I did write some really fast solo but that's different because it came out of my head and I adopted it the way it suited my playing style ... was still the only one capable of keeping up with its rhythm out of all guitarists in the band tho, that bought me some respect those days... and I won't mention how many beers it'd be disrespectful to non-guitarists here :P :)
