hey all

2 hours later…
03:23
@ScottPack I like it! Thanks!
@ScottPack Why the sudden SN change by the way?

8 hours later…
11:26
I've been thinking of doing it for a while, just finally got around to it.
@ScottPack Morning!
(see, I'm getting the hang of this timezone thing)
:-)
Morning @RoryAlsop!
Bright eyed and bushy tailed?
Oh wow, it's starting.
"Pease me father, me taste your cereal."
12:09
I should point out that the request occurred after she finished her own breakfast. I think I have a burgeoning manipulator on my hands.
12:35
@ScottPack quite right. Finish own food, grab neighbouring food. Command and conquer.
Speaking of which....the other night we watched, 'This is England'
Two things: Either I'm out of practice, or wherever those guys were have the nastiest accents of all time.
It's also set against the backdrop of that thing off South America in the 80s. I turned to the wife and said, "Hey, I know the guy who started that whole thing. Neat!"
@Iszi I like this one better: home2.paulschou.net/tools/xlate
@ScottPack Holy crap! That's totally way better! And a shorter URL too! I wish you could edit tweets instead of having to delete and re-create them.
The page isn't as pretty, but I think it makes up for it.
@ScottPack Totally. In other news, I really need to clean up my "Unsorted" bookmarks folder.
Man, that new SN is gonna throw me for awhile. I'm way too used to @Packs. Come to think, I wonder if older @references will be updated so they still point to you?
@Iszi looks like they are updated
12:48
That makes sense.
The code should include the UID and only translate that into a name on page view.
@RoryAlsop Not quite.
@Scott - I noticed you had updated on SU (or maybe SO) before here, and just thought you had changed things there (as I do on guitars.se) - did you have to manually update everywhere
@RoryAlsop Even actual replies aren't updated.
@Iszi I searched back a wee bit and all looked like they had (so I didn't bother going back that far - my bad)
@RoryAlsop I think there's a button you can push to shove the update to other sites.
12:50
@RoryAlsop I had to do a manual update.
Ahh - I usually find when I join another site I have to undo a chunk of the automatic stuff
I changed my name on the security site a few days before everything else, but nothing propogated (as expected)
It did take a while for the change to trickle over to Chat, though.
@RoryAlsop For new accounts, that makes sense.
You have a few more accounts than I do, @RoryAlsop. I just went down the list and opened in new tab.
@ScottPack Holy crap, you aren't kidding! If I didn't know any better, I'd say that's just about every SE site there is!
12:54
Not quite, I came across one guy who did his best to create an account on every SE site. It was disturbingly large.
Of course, that was before the new format.
Nah - if I find an interesting question and think I might go there more than once then I add an account. There are only 14 where I am active, and only 11 where I have rep over 200
it's mainly just here and guitars
I don't even go that far. I've made an account on a few, mostly by accident, but I really only ever watch security, rpg, and SF.
Almost all of my rep on SU is from migrations :)
@RoryAlsop That policy is about the same for me. Seems I'm on 17 sites now, only about three of which I'm actually active on. Rep is >300 on six, and >1,000 on only two (here and RPG).
I mostly lurk on rpg. I should probably actually get active on it.
@ScottPack I haven't yet watched/lurked SU enough to know for sure when migrations should happen. Have pushed a couple, but still not sure.
as they do still have security tag
and I don't want to seem to pushy
13:06
With the 3 main sites it turned out pretty easy to figure out.
SO == programmers, SF == Professional IT, SU == hobbyist and home use IT
That's about the best, short, descriptions I've built up.
In the beginning the lines were a bit harder.
@ScottPack Looks about right. SF/SU tends to blur just a bit when you venture into small office environments. So, I tend to consider SF = "Enterprise" rather than just "Professional".
SF was for SysAdmins, all other stuff went to SU
Thankfully it started to expand out a bit.
Now Application Admin type questions are more likely to stay on SF.
@Iszi It depends :)
A lot of dd-wrt questions get migrated, but certainly not all.
I've seen some chats about specific questions where the lines seemed to be blurred.
Often it comes down to where the community feels the question might best be served. I do remember a couple of times (though not specific questions) where even though it was obviously pro-IT, and a fit for SF, the expertise was felt to better exist over at SU.

tempted to move her to the spam bin - what did we call it this time?
@RoryAlsop Edit out the URLs and send an e-mail warning.
(Would be my move.)
I thought it was SmokedWildebeest or some such
That account smells pretty hardcore of spam
You can either kill the posts, or I'll go ahead and flag them. If enough users spam flag a post it'll get autowiped
feel free to flag 'em. I removed the spam links

Really?
How rude
@RoryAlsop I seem to recall something along those lines as well.
14:54
@AviD would know. He set it up, then it got eaten - yup, another food thread...
@RoryAlsop ...as I'm ordering my lunch.
15:11
Anyone seen this one yet? pcworld.com/article/222589/…
TL;DR - Dutch courts say hacking WiFi is not illegal because an AP isn't a computer.
I wonder what I'm going to do for lunch. I don't think I have any leftovers at home.
Probably just pull something out of the freezer. Hmm...I may cook pirogies.
a food I haven't heard of!
@ScottPack what's a pirogie#
They're rather like large raviolis. The filling tends to be a mixture of potato and (cheese|onion|sourkrout).
Can be baked, boiled, or pan fried.
Eastern or Central Europe
Pierogi (; also spelled pierógi, pyrogy or perogi) are boiled, baked or fried dumplings of unleavened dough traditionally stuffed with potato filling, sauerkraut, ground meat, or fruit. Of central and eastern European provenance, they are usually semicircular, but are rectangular or triangular in some cuisines. The Polish word pierogi is plural; the singular form pieróg is rarely used, as a typical serving consists of several pierogi. Origin and name variants The origins of pierogi are difficult to trace. While dumplings as such are found throughout Eurasia, the specific name pierog...
Personally, I'm a big fan of pan fried in butter, filled with potato and onion, along with a touch of bbq sauce for dipping.
Yummo.
mmmmmmmmmm - works for me
15:28
@ScottPack I think I've had that before.
Give me a plate full of those and a beer.... I am SET!
@Iszi lunacy
@ScottPack sauerkraut*
Too bad out division has a code of conduct that forbids drinking at lunch. Well, technically, I can drink at lunch. I'll just be taking the rest of the day off :)
@RoryAlsop Heard about it first a few days ago. I forget where. I know I must have tweeted it.
@ScottPack What's worse? Having written rules that forbid drinking at lunch, or unwritten ones?
15:31
Unwritten, without question.
Written rules, you at least have a reference to point at that "This is what we do." If the rules don't get enforced, well, you got lucky.
Unwritten, however, someone has to explicitly tell you about that rule, and the enforcement is likely to be a lot more random.
15:48
And there's also the feeling "Well, I really could do this if I wanted to and technically it's okay, but..."
Exactly. It's the...arbitrariness of the situation.
I much prefer having a written spec, and then being allowed to deviate from it, than the other way.
At least that way, if I do get called out, I knew what was coming
16:00
@ScottPack Yeah, it's nice that you have that.
And now...time to head home.

2 hours later…
17:38
@ScottPack Time-what? You mean for lunch or something, right?
Right, for lunch.
I'm back at the office.
We had a parcel waiting too. Did you see this?
in The Comms Room, 16 mins ago, by Scott Pack
Wow, this is...impressive. Just received a 20"x16"x11" shipping box. Enclosed was a bunch of paper packing material and a 16"x16"x4.5" box. Contained within that was a bunch of foam and a single hard drive.
@ScottPack No, I was Out of Office, or O3 as I like to call it. (I swear one of these days, that'll catch on somewhere.)
Not O^3
hm, that sucks
@ScottPack I like that, too. O-cubed.
Surely one can superscript in chat.
O^{3}
O_3
Ok, so we know chat doesn't support \LaTeX now.
Anyone here know anything about Yahoo! mail and error "999" ?
I can make some inferences, but actual documentation is rather lacking.
17:53
@ScottPack Who uses Yahoo! mail?
Much as this could be amusing, it is most definitely not an SE question:
1
Q: What is the worst vulnerablity you know of?

RookSo what is the worst of the worst? It could be a vulnerability that is high impact and easy to exploit. It could be a massive oversight or something difficult to patch.

@RoryAlsop - I think you have the community's blessing (3 close votes, 3 down-votes) to bring down the mod hammer here, too:

Q: How to be good IT network hacker?

Surjya Narayana PadhiHi Geeks, I want to be freelancer professional in network hacking for good purpose like to government and investigation agency. Can any expert answer my following queries? What skill-sets I have to develop to be an expert network hacker? Is there any certification program to prove myself as a ...

@Iszi My wife.
I thought the first one would be fun, but it should probably be a CW.
@Iszi Just need 2 more blokes to vote on it.
18:24
@ScottPack Or one bloke to use his diamond power.
Hey, @Iszi! Remember when we had mods? Good times. :)
I just checked, and we have 19 users who are capable of casting close votes
I should warn you, the guys in the Comms Room are contemplating an invasion party. They're taking the good ole Roman tactic of finding the barbarian tribes, and bringing them culture.
Only, in this case, the culture, is...well..tats.
(o)(o)
@MarkM Oh, I know this one...
0100001001001111010011110100001001010011
@Iszi Just a little experiment
18:31
@MarkM I thought that's what college was for?
@ScottPack Tits, dear. Tits.
@ScottPack Darn. Beat me to it.
Now that's a nice pair of tits
@ScottPack Indeed.
18:32
Nicest pair I could find on Google Images
Perky
Oh my way out the door this morning I saw a bird flying off the feeder. I found myself wondering if it was a tit, but decided against googling at the office.
so this room has tits. The Comms Room has boobies. Anyone know where I can find a nice pair of spotted owls (and another suitable victim room)?
@voretaq7 In Comms, I suggested we bring mammary glands to non tech rooms
to see if the star for tit cause and effect is strictly tech related
@MarkM Brilliant!
18:33
There's always the RPG room. Of course, it may just confuse them.
@ScottPack And, it's typically pretty dead.
We'll get a complaining post on Meta if we're not careful. Something to strive for I guess :-)
@ScottPack that doesn't count
@ScottPack Oh now that would just be cruel!
Dude, look at how long VGV8 evaded the banhammer, meta doesn't scare me
18:35
It's not like you're spreading ill-will or anything.
@ScottPack no, just nature photos :-)
It's not like im doing it on feminism.se
(or cooking.se)
@MarkM A true feminist would embrace it and be empowered.
Natural Por^H^H^HGeographic
(or alternatively find a way to emasculate all of us with witty and cutting remarks)
18:36
Anyway, I got tits sticked here (sticky tits?) Back to Comms for me
I hear that feminists are, in fact, cunning linguists.
2
@ScottPack see, now if you said that in SF chat I'd star it, but there are so many almost-on-topic stars here it just feels wrong!
@voretaq7 It probably depends a lot on who was active during the starring
18:58
Ever have boredom give you paranoia when you're at work? I mean, you're bored because there's a lull in the work, but that makes you paranoid because you're expecting the boss at any second to drop something in your lap because you don't look busy.
19:29
I don't worry about that from my boss.
No, what freaks me out is when the end of the week starts looking rather slow, and 4:45 rolls around...
So apparently it was a black-capped chickadee I saw this morning. Not a tit.
Or maybe a Carolina, they look pretty similar and my visibility was compromised.
@ScottPack 1545 for me, and that's about every day whether it's busy around that time or not.
How unfortunate for you.
Quick! Look busy for 8 minutes!

If you’ve used any Stack Exchange site over the last year, you’re probably familiar with “the envelope”.

The envelope was a notification system that … sort of … let you know when things happened on the site. As time went on, it became clear that the envelope was a deeply flawed design. I began thinking of it as a curse, as our Windows Vista. Yep. That bad.

What was wrong with the envelope? So many things:

Clearly, the envelope had be terminated … with extreme prejudice. …

Hey, just a week late.

2 hours later…
21:53
Wow... a lot of there reasons why the envelope had to be terminated, presumes a philosophy against which I can find a good few still-existing contradictions.
22:37
evening all!
I see we had visitors!
and tits
@ScottPack +1 against "worst vulnerability" :)
and one more close vote - just one more needed for how to be a good hacker
23:11
@nealmcb +1 for what?
@RoryAlsop Yes, the mammary glands of the female of the species is quickly becoming worthy of an official 'meme' in The Comms Room.

@ScottPack follow the crumbs :)
/me sighs
This is like those freaking "bear hunts" I go on with my two year old, isn't it? :)
Oh yeah! That guy! The one who discovered a "13.4" vulnerability on a 10 point scale!
Oo...this looks interesting
I found it a bit strange that he received the morterboard badge with only 453 rep
It should be interesting to see if the system deducts any rep in the next few hours.
I see you hiding there, @WesleyDavid.
@ScottPack Bite me.
Oh behave
Yes dear.
I need to put the little one down. bbl
