For my mailing lists, at least, I do a pretty good job of deleting threads I don't care about, and have an autoarchive job to delete messages from our ticketing system that's more than 3 months old.

I've found it's easier to free-text search tickets in my email rather than the web interface, but if it's that old then the web is probably good enough.
