@RoryAlsop I'm not seeing GPUs mentioned there anywhere, so it doesn't feel that way to me, while the accepted answer to my question does so nicely.
But I did find the following at the 2012 question: PC magazine, July 26, 2022 Malware That Can Survive OS Reinstalls Found On Asus, Gigabyte Motherboards (found here)

@uhoh "can" is doing al the heavy lifting there. In reality, it just does not happen. None of us are a valuable enough target

@uhoh it’s like saying you should never ever drive a car again, in case you are involved in a bad crash (which is still more likely than you getting zero-dayed!!)

@RoryAlsop I heard that in the future, there will be "bots" - software that automatically scan the internet and automatically infect every machine they find. Oh, wait...
@security_paranoid I haven't owned a vehicle in almost 20 years.
Anyway, I think asking if GPUs have exploitable nonvolatile memory is a reasonable thing to do. I think there is nothing paranoid about asking the question. I think the attitude there is adolescent at best, and I probably won't post there again. The bluster to wisdom ratio is way too high.

@uhoh Generally security questions on SU do get answered correctly, but yes, there is more noise there from non-infosec people, so it can be a bit harder
@uhoh oi
I'd say we've a more practical, end user bend, and probably arn't as concerned with exotic attack vectors

@JourneymanGeek honestly, nobody should be concerned with exotic attack vectors. Unless you are one of those very specific exotic targets

@uhoh well you have asked, and you’ve gotten the same answer from SU and here. And no offence intended, but maybe what’s more “adolescent” is the fact that you’ve forgotten that these SU users are just trying to help.
Don’t take the advice if you choose, but don’t have a prod at the community who’s answering your question, that you’ve asked.
Do you understand what I’m trying to say?
