Q: What are the different path in the cybersecurity field?

AlfechI am doing my bachelor in computer science and I have the chance to do multiple cybersecurity courses. Before taking them, I (of course) did some research about jobs in the cybersecurity field to see what you do in day to day task, what path exists, etc. For some unknown reasons to me, I just fou...

Do technical security roles exist outside of dedicated security companies (and some parts of BigTech)?

If you work in a small enough company and show the slightest amount of computer knowledge, you may end up doing technical security stuff because management is too cheap to outsource it or build a dedicated security team.
Also, if you are a contractor doing computer-related stuff for small companies, you may become de-facto security management for them because they don't know any better. "Oh you need something changed on the firewall? Here's the password, I trust you."
For many small companies, their cybersecurity strategy is based entirely on knowing people's personal character. They don't have the technical background to judge anything, so the best they can do is, "Does these individual seem like trustworthy?"
If you seem trustworthy and smart, you can ask for access to any system and they will let you do almost anything you want
It's no surprise that tech support scams are so lucrative, because people are used to handing over passwords and following mysterious instructions to do stuff they have no idea about.

@nobody My company is paying for my degree in cyber security to fill this type of roll because all the people that applied for the job where asking for "way too much". In the case of my company, they want someone on the payroll w/ the training "just in case" and for "expert opinions" ... the rest of the time I just wear my DevOps hat.

@CaffeineAddiction If I may ask, what makes them think you won't take the training and leave for a higher paying job in a couple of years?

I mean, there is that distinct possibility ... and at the start there was some talk about a claw-back (me having to pay them back some or all of the money if I leave before x amount of time working after achieving the degree). But they never made me sign anything and it was more or less a handshake deal that I would stick around afterwords and they would give me a pay bump when I graduate.
Fintech industry is kinda smallish in that if you make enemies word spreads fast and you wont find employment in fin tech anymore ... so there is that. There is also some amount of loyalty involved as I have been w/ the company for ~5 years and enjoy the people I work with.

Right. Sounds like a good deal anyways

yah, i like it

Is fintech a fancy term for e-banking?

@nobody you know those shops at the airport that offer to exchange currency for you? Its like that but instead of taking a 15% cut and praying on tourists we take less than 1% and deal w/ multi billion dollar businesses doing trade deals
eg, Elon Musk wants to buy Russian rocket engines but only has USD ... someone has to exchange that USD to Ruble. In reality Elon goes to his bank and his bank handles it on his behalf ... through someone like us.

And here I always thought fintech referred to Finish tech companies... Kept wondering why everybody was so interested in the tech scene over there...
