A: What cybersecurity jobs are mostly technical?

John ContiYou can work for a cybercrime organization, maintaing botnets and other digital assets. Your work will be monotonous, but it won't require a lot of human contact (in fact you'll be prohibited from most of it). https://krebsonsecurity.com/2022/03/conti-ransomware-group-diaries-part-ii-the-office/

Technically correct

@nobody yeah, but not helpful :-=)
@CaffeineAddiction Fintech and Forex are ... really really not the same thing at all. Some Fintechs do Forex, but most don't

J--
10:02 AM
Hey @RoryAlsop - long time no see. How are you?
@nobody Guy actually linked a Krebs article :D That guy is a loser.

@J-- not too bad - staying busy

J--
@RoryAlsop Glad to hear it. Staying busy is optimal for dealing with the current and future political situation in my mind :)

@J-- Heh true, I have yet to meet a technical security person who reads krebs

J--
@nobody Guys a clown with some kind of ego complex. In my mind he's no better than a grifter.

Krebs?

J--
10:09 AM
Mhm.
Don't like him at all.

Yeah, its hard to like a person who doxxes those who disagree with him

J--
Yes.
Also, I just detest people that work for big media organisations. He used to work at the Washington Post. In my mind, a lot of the reason politics is fucked up is because of media so closely connected to politicians there's no possible way that things can be impartial as they say.
But mostly its the doxxing that makes me resent him.
He also seems to be extremely anti crime in that, hes even doxxed people who already served time lmao. Which is just... Vile. Having a crime hung over your head your entire life is just absurd.

He's not anti-crime, he just seems to get a kick out of doxxing people

@J-- I've ended up becoming CISO at my company, so I can stay busy forever now :-)

J--
@RoryAlsop Oh congratulations, that is awesome. Rather you than me, I'd not survive in a role like that :D

10:17 AM
@nobody He really does seem to, doesn't he!
@J-- currently more upsides than downsides, despite the workload

J--
@RoryAlsop I imagine the salary is a significant upside :'D

@RoryAlsop CISOs are busy? You gotta be kidding, you guys just have to attend meetings, you don't have to do any real work :P

J--
lol

@nobody lol

J--
Serious question... What comes after CISO?
I mean, if you want to stay in technical.
I guess CTO?

10:23 AM
CISO at a bigger company

@J-- no. CISO should not report in to CTO - conflict of interests. You can, but you need to ensure a separate dotted line to Board
A next step up could be CRO, or as @nobody said, CISO at a bigger company :-)
CTO delivers services and product implementation. CISO protects

J--
Right.

those can be a major conflict of interests

J--
Essentially, you're at the top :D

top would be chairman of the Board, or in the company itself, CEO
Both of those are interesting roles
but you definitely lose your tech edge by then

J--
10:28 AM
If you're a CISO now naturally that means more scotch is required right? :D
lol

@Rory I noticed you closed that career question as a duplicate. Just in case you didn't notice, schroeder had closed it as duplicate of the same question and then reopened. (If you already noticed and think it is still a duplicate, that's fine by me)

J--
That reminds me, I was in Scotland a few months back. I am not sure if you've been to Inverness but I went there for two days and I found this lovely little scotch bar.

@nobody Thanks for that - I hadn't seen the previous close in the history, however I had seen the new close votes
@J-- it's mandatory
@nobody I'll chat to Schroeder

J--
It was awesome because all the scotch bars here don't have staff that actually care about scotch, i.e; its just a job.

and check

10:29 AM
What is the highest 'more technical than management' role?

J--
The Malt Room, its called.
@RoryAlsop heh

@nobody that's a difficult one. In diff orgs it could be CTO, CISO, Director or Head of IT or IT Sec, Head of Sec Operations, Head of SOC? Who knows
@J-- I think I know that one

Ah, right, of course it depends on the organization, don't know what I was thinking :)

J--
At a previous place I worked the structure inside security was;

Junior
-> Associate
-> Regular (Not called that obviously)
-> Senior
-> Manager
-> Senior Manager
-> Director
-> Head of
-> Global Head of
-> CISO
-> CTO
That was a fairly large organisation.
@RoryAlsop It was awesome.
I am definitely going to go back some time.
I had a glass of Old Perth 13, oh my. Easily the best Whisky I've ever had. It wasn't even particularly expensive, but it was gorgeous.
Heavy sherry.

I got a nice Edradour in the raffle at a charity dinner last week :-)

J--
10:35 AM
I've just realised that bottle is actually £375. I didn't realise it was so much.
@RoryAlsop Don't think I've ever tried that. I'll take a look.

11:20 AM
@J-- since if you have regular, there's a risk of decaf....

J--
11:36 AM
@JourneymanGeek heh :D

J--
12:34 PM
I think I might need to get my wisdom teeth removed :(
I woke up this morning with a massive pain on one side of mouth. I looked and there's like a flesh wound right where my wisdom teeth are. I can only assume its that which is causing that flesh wound. Then again, its only on one side.

J--
12:46 PM
Anyone have any experience with needing their wisdom teeth removed? :D
Actually, could be my ADHD meds making me clench my jaw...

@J-- Rory probably
:-)

J--
Heh :D
I am TERRIFIED of the dentist. So I pray it isn't that.
Yes, scared of the dentist at my big age...

What's scary about a dentist?
I am terrified of people in general, but I never felt scared of dentists in particular

J--
I have no idea. Fears aren't rational. I am just terrified of the dentist for some reason.
Well, I could hazard a guess as to why I'm scared of them but I won't write it here.
TLDR: lack of parenting :)

@J-- I think you used the wrong emoticon there...

J--
12:58 PM
I wanted upside down smiley but it looks stupid in text. (: <- see.

@J-- thankfully no, I need all the wisdom I've got :D

J--
@JourneymanGeek :p
It damn hurts. But out of fear for the dentist I'm gonna put it down to me sleeping on adhd meds and clenching my jaw in my sleep since stimulants do that and im a pussy

You should get it checked out
lest it get infected and you need to remove your whole lower jaw

J--
good point

2 hours later…
J--
3:35 PM
This song fucking slaps.

4:24 PM
@J-- Linkin Park in general is great

J--
Uh
That's not Linkin Park, is it? :think:

Ah I can't read lol
I had linkin park in the lower bar of spotify from a while ago (i don't use spotify often since i scripted some ytdl utils)

J--
Oh ahah

@J-- That it does. Thank you

J--
You're welcome.
