Apparently, regarded as a good question. And yet noone up-voted it. Disappointing.

@packs Wow, you're right. There's been at least seven people who saw enough value in the question to either write or up-vote at least one of the answers, but the question itself only has one up-vote.

The one was me :) I don't know if it's SE wide or what, but upvoting questions always seemed rare on SF.
My rule of thumb is that if you think it's worth answering, then it's worth upvoting.
On the data site, one of the stock queries is to look at the ratio of rep and upvotes to see which users have the 'highest standards'.
I actually found it interesting
13:33
@packs - ooo. data site? Please tell more...
@RoryAlsop He gave a link the other day. Let me see if I can dig it up in the log.
@Iszi - cheers
haven't forgotten your CISSP stuff by the way
@RoryAlsop Thanks :-)
Actually, it was @AviD that gave the link. I flagged it as Interesting, so it should show in the sidebar now.
ah - I see it in the right hand sidebar
cheers
Some really cool information is available there. Also a little bit at stackexchange.com/sites
Nice thing about the data site is that, if you speak the language, you can build your own queries against any of the SE sites and Metas available there.
Downside is, no Betas there.
13:42
Yeah - but not long till out of beta now. Thanks for that link - very cool
@RoryAlsop Beta periods aren't necessarily based on lifetime. Sure, we get evaluated at 90 days. But, if we don't meet certain criteria (or if there's a bunch of sites still ahead of us in line) it may yet be some more months before we do get out of Beta.
@RoryAlsop Can you fix this for me? I'm still far from having edit privileges, and the use of DOS instead of DoS is just kinda irksome.

Q: Protection against account lockout DOS

Josh BrowerAny ideas on how to protect against the following scenario? Company x uses active directory for authentication of it's employees. The company has multiple authentication points that are semi-public and some that are fully public. (eg, Extranet accessible from the Internet) Usernames are pretty...

And now, is time for breakfast.
@Iszi - willdo. Enjoy breakfast - I've just had pizza for lunch :-)
14:07
Y'know, it kinda bugs me sometimes that tags can't be given capitalization.
@Iszi Thanks for pulling out the link for data. I was still catching up on email.
This is the query I was talking about
Well, that's the query for SF.
Apparently, changing the site name in the link just results in an asp error.
Also, this might be up someone's alley.

Q: Running a Windows server without an administrator in charge

PekkaI am dissolving my business as a Web Developer, and handing over all continuous work to successors. For one client for whom I have developed a number of web apps over the years, I set up a Windows 2003 virtual server a few years ago. That server contains the Subversion repositories with all the ...

At ${job} I would just say, "That's adorable that you think so. Now go find an admin."
I'm not sure that would really work on the site :)

Really? How is this going to be any less vulnerable than any other data-at-rest?

Wow - I keep running across great bits of UI in stackexchange. Who knew that by clicking on a user in chat, you get a graph of what hours and days they tend to be online? (and who worries about that from a security standpoint :/ )
21:02
@nealmcb Welcome to the World of the Social Web
21:14
@packs Well, welcome to a nice new tool, anyway. I've been doing social internet stuff for a while. Hmm - lets see - CMS talk in 1975, USENET in 1979, mailing lists, muds and moos in the '90's, wikis since 1997, then forums, blogs, FOAF, jabber, facebook, twitter, google buzz, etc. :)
Yeah, that looks a bit snarkier than I intended. Whoops
@packs Oh not at all. And I was afraid my response was overdone, but it was fun to reminisce....
Now the question is, can I get convenient real-time notification of responses to my queries here?
21:30
Mostly, yes. There are two ways
One is strictly auditory.
On the right hand side at the top you can see the speaker icon to set the volume. Whenever your name gets mentioned there's a beep.
2
Also, you can 'enable desktop notification'
On chrome, at least, it looks an awful lot like the guifications for pidgin.
Ahh - thanks! I was just running across that in the faq :)
< senselesswhining> I have been very disappointed in the level of documentation available on chat. It seems as though one must subscribe to the SO blog to actually find out anything.</senselesswhining>
Ahh - I heard it that time, after turning it on to thunk when anything happens in any room I'm in....
Fun to watch the text colors change as the message goes out and around.
Ah, yes. I just made mine notify on my name.

wotcha
