A: Is C a good choice for security-related software any longer?

Tom LeekThe main and almost unique reason why most software in the Linux ecosystem is written in C is Tradition. Developers see software written in C, libraries with a C-based API, and thus they use C, because that's convenient. Compilers are already there, and work well because the whole OS is written i...

@ThomasPornin re your answer above, what would you recommend instead of C ^
Java/C#?
@DavidFreitag I love this
@MarkBuffalo Fireball face ftw
@MarkBuffalo C# is still far from working well on Linux, and I'd rather shoot myself than use Java.
Java is really good though
It's really not though
Java is on my shit list that also happens to contain PHP
Give a good reason why? d:
PHP is nowhere near the level of awesome that Java is
I enjoy working with Java
PHP makes me want to dig my eyes out with a rusty metal spork, and set fire to the gore
Java is nearly exactly like C#
00:29
Just because it's on the same list doesn't make it nearly as bad
@MarkBuffalo Java pisses me off because it's a monumental pain in the rooster to use the current OS's default look and feel
Instead of the shitty Java UI
@DavidFreitag Not anymore
I had that same hatred as well
Now my apps are using the same look and feel as whatever version of windows I'm on
Also the whole factory thing with Java. No fucking thanks
What do you mean by factory?
The standard Java workflow where everything has a factory
Hmm?
That's just for interfaces?
Interfaces / abstract classes... C# has those too
You know, you can use Java in almost the same way as C#
00:36
Java rubs me the wrong way. It's like nails on a chalkboard or a hotdog on a water balloon
It'll get better. Use it like you use C#
;p
I would rather gouge my eye out with a rusty spork
@DavidFreitag Relink tomorrow when I'm at work pls
HAHAHA PORNIN IRL: i.imgur.com/2UdzmBM.gifv
I need to write a program in c or python or java or android. But i dont have any ideas on what to make :(
@silverpenguin How about a program to figure out why ifup is printing dhclient usage and failing to bring up eth0
00:43
Man that sounds boring
Ok so why is ifup trying to call dhclient with dhclient -v -pf /run/dhclient.eth0.pid -lf /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient.eth0.leases eth0 when -v isn't a valid flag
So confused!
C# is awesome.
01:32
Damn
This place is the shiznittery.
@DavidFreitag Do you have a Logan's Roadhouse in CT?
:x

I like when sometimes you get 240 internet points without even doing the effort: security.stackexchange.com/questions/117033/…
And when you are putting the time and effort in it, you get 10
@M'vy I got a similar amount for literally a link and a one line summary...
@M'vy snap I've got 300 internet points for a quick thing security.stackexchange.com/questions/117009/…
and stuff I put real effort into gets nowt
speaking of patching I applied 2 android update yesterday
@M'vy do they tell you what CVEs they're fixing with the updates?
@RоryMcCune no, but I guess I could check android 6 patch notes
08:58
@M'vy I was just wondering how hard/easy it is with an android phone to work out which things they've patched on a given mode and which ones might still be open
hm
not too important for individual users, but if you're an InfoSec manager it must be a bugger working out how vulnerable your phone fleet is
especially if you've got multiple models in play
Adi
Adi
@RоryMcCune @M'vy I see you're both taking over my territory in providing useless answers and reaping too many rep for them
@Adi lolz well phone supportability is a bit of a bugbear of mine, so I felt it needed added :) no idea why it got so many upvotes...
@M'vy ahh so another reason to use nexus devices if you're using Android, I guess
09:03
@Adi needz 10k :)
@RоryMcCune Nexus is life. No s*** stuff from the netw op
@M'vy I need 10k! I'm 501 magic points away from it

@M'vy Don't underestimate the power of reptraining
It gave me about 25k in one year
Strategically put your answers on stupid-looking questions that are answered with mere common sense.
Oh, and the tactical bolding
Never forget the tactical bolding
and tactical snark
snark helps when used appropriately
Adi
Adi
Scientifically proven
We need more stupid questions
Can someone go and ask something stupid that I can repwhore on please
it's harder than it looks
09:29
@Matthew Being stupid is not easy :p
@Adi once someone bolded my sub heading in my answer i started getting good rep
coincidence?... perhaps
Adi
Adi
@silverpenguin It's not a coincidence at all
Having a TL;DR (of any name) and bolded subheadings is very important
I wish to see more science
Adi
Adi
The TL;DR gives the gist of your answer to someone who might know a bit about the topic, they agree with your answer, and get on with the upvoting
For those who don't know about the topic, you give them the good feeling of thinking they learned something with too little effort, they reward you for it
ahh i see, yes i was very happy @MarkBuffalo did this in his answer i dont have time for that

The sub headings allow you to guide the readers eyes and chunk the answer to accommodate short attention spans
Morning folks
it sounds like these answers are tailored just for me
lol
Adi
Adi
They're tailored for the average internet reader
@ColinCassidy Morning
average T____T nuuuuuu
its way to early to be awake
I got kinda tired searching for those questiosn
10:27
Is it on topic to ask about non IT security, such as alarm systems?
or credit card RFID security and such stuff?
@TomášZato so I'd say yes it should be , I know we've had Credit card and RFID stuff before
might be a nice change to mix it up a bit
@TomášZato we have a tag for "Physical" as well security.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/physical
Questions about skin care are off topic though. Not sure why the spammers don't get that!

how can i keep my sexiness safe and secure from the ugly! #onTopic
10:40
ahah @AviD I like that tweet :)
11:23
@RоryMcCune Hah. Imagine walking around RSAC with a towel around your neck...
@TerryChia well I guess everyone would think " There's a frood who really knows where his towel is."
@RоryMcCune hoopy frood, surely?
hoopy is the sentence before apparently :)
I could only remember the rough phrasing so went and looked it up..
@RоryMcCune I stand corrected!
@Matthew of course I'm assuming that wiki is the book and not shudder the movie
and I almost wrote that sentence in the past tense
'cause I'm reporting today and everything has to be in the past tense
11:28
@RоryMcCune I get confused on days when I'm doing IR reports - they're present tense sometimes...
TIL you can buy IMSI catchers from alibaba...

Q: Recently I saw several transactions summing up to around Rs.20000 from my bank account. Is there anything, that can be done to get the money back?

it_all_ends_hereThe bank name is Bank of India, and the transactions are all similar. They look like StUBP-30165136 IDEA-50253351 CWDR/743413/1FDNNT14

Do Indian banks not do fraud recovery?
11:56
can anyone spot what this might be?

base64?
@silverpenguin it's a base64 string which starts with 'Salted' making my think it's likely a password hash
@RоryMcCune I decoded this D: but it just kept giving me a blank result
how annoying
@silverpenguin most of the characters aren't ASCII text
b'Salted__\x08\x95\xe1\xff\x8f}X\xb9\xeeHZ\x93\xe5Wo\xad\x91]\xe7\x8e\x95\x08\x83\xd9\xab\\\xea\xee#v\x8b\x00\x16\xdb\xf3\xa8n{t"\xeb@\x8b\x88T\x06}Q>@F\x07\x00\xf0w\x1a'
12:01
so what did you guys use to decode this then ? im just using online tools because im at work
@silverpenguin I used Burp decoder :)
base64.b64decode() in python
aww man :< my online tools do to specific charsets .....no wonder i wasnt getting anything
i feel thick now
haha
@silverpenguin you're a manatee, you are thick
a manatee with feelings :'(
12:04
oh com'on it's friday
;)
with the base 64 encoded string above I already found it byt decoding a base64 string 4 times ... to find a url... then in that URL I found an Md5 ... got a password from that MD5 and got this base64 encoded text
so now i have these characters that you guys got from the base64 decodeing (not from the web T_T) and I have a unhashed password
@MarkBuffalo I have decided you will be my sansei ... now teach me things :<
in the words of @DavidFreitag ༼つಠ益ಠ༽つ ─=≡ΣO))
I assume you meant 'sensei'
@M'vy opps
my brain got ahead of me
but yes
nihon ga hanase masuka?
12:13
@RоryMcCune for some reason I assumed he had put the towel info on his RSA ID so folks would just get information on a towel...seems a good anti-post-con-spam filter
@RoryAlsop I just woke up, so I'm a bit disoriented. I could've sworn you said the NSA bugged your towel. I had to take a double look at this
@DavidFreitag when you come back on you dont even know how happy this made me ༼つಠ益ಠ༽つ ─=≡ΣO))
lol, though. my misunderstanding made me laugh
@silverpenguin I am still but the learner
@MarkBuffalo but you could teach me many things of the h4xx0r
@M'vy which one?
12:16
@silverpenguin But I am not the h4xx0r
@AviD regexp
it is to late @MarkBuffalo I know your secret identity you are h4xx0r
@silverpenguin nihon is japan. nihongo is japanese language
@M'vy my japanese is weak
I confused the ga with the ending go so missed it out
Well, you have to train to be better :)
Actually google translate gives: Anata wa nihongo ga hanasemasu ka

12:23

@M'vy Nippon, you mean?
when i was in tokyo me and my friend ordered so much food we had a 4 person table to our selves and a family of 3 had to sit at a 2 person table xD
@silverpenguin -.-
@MarkBuffalo nope
@Simon you just jelly
12:24
@M'vy You're using the wrong romanization >:O
@MarkBuffalo 日本語 (nihongo) is what I have
I cant read that version of the alaphabet yet xD
Japanese (日本語) "Nihon-go" or "Nippon-go" in Japanese) is the language spoken in Japan, in East Asia. A theory about its origin is that Japanese, Mongolian, and Turkish come from the same family of Altaic languages. Interestingly, a different term is used for Japanese as a course of study by citizens: it is "kokugo" (国語), which means national language. Nonetheless, Japanese is still referred to as 日本語 by the Japanese. Japanese uses three separate writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. The first two are phonetic systems (writing that shows the pronunciation of Japanese words), and kanji...
huh, TIL
There's different ways to romanize this
I'm used to nippon, not nihon
yeah. Well I stick to the one closest to pronunciation
I love it when two people argue and they're both right.

@Matthew Have you ever seen Life of Pi?
@Simon yes that is awesome!
@Simon not the Pi the make love not warcraft
@silverpenguin heresy!
@silverpenguin Did you recognize yourself in it?
@Simon No, but I really should. A friend of mine was one of the technical team on the animal fur
12:28
@Simon what you sayin f00l
@Matthew Oh come on, you have to watch it.
12:40
