00:16
it's telling when Microsoft drop their Skype app from the Windows store
obviously lots of faith in the platform
00:42
I have to say I still don't know what is going on in Inception
01:05
I know this might be a bit off topic but I really can't get to understand vlans
@BobEbert what do you don't understand about them?
is it something that works as a subnet?
the word virtual*
@BobEbert It's a virtual LAN as in old days people would connect to eachother with a switch and have static IPs
all people connected to that switch would have access to eachother
the issue is that you don't really want all people physically connected to a switch to talk to eachother
and maybe you even want them to talk to certain people connected on a secondary switch
but not to all people connected on that switch
would it be safe to say that it is not used in modern networks?
that's what VLANs are for
@BobEbert on the contrary it's extensively used actually
@BobEbert to show you why you should VLANs consider this scenario, let's say you have Bob Alice and Mallory
Bob and Alice are part of LAN A and Mallory is part of another LAN B
Bob and alice are in the 10.0.0.0/24 range
and Mallory is in the 192.168.1.0/24 range
phyiscally, bob and alice are connected to the same switch
now you say "oh so they can't talk to eachother right?"
Well Mallory can change her IP address to a static one in the the 10.0.0.0/24 range
and she would
01:15
right
because she is on the same layer 2 network
VLANs offer you a means to segment your layer 2 network
Switches are cheaper than routers and offer less overhead when switching packets, if you wanted to do this just with subnetting you would have to buy one router for each subnet
or buy a large router with more ports
this apply to routers as well? or just switches
so since switches are cheaper, companies uses them instead of routers?
01:33
@BobEbert one reason yes
@LucasKauffman and I believe routers doesn't have a range as long as a vlan?
@BobEbert there are no limitations with VLANs aside from the amount of physical ports iirc
but remember it's layer 2
@LucasKauffman but that doesn't really mather since we can use arp to match ips with mac?
@BobEbert what do you mean?
what does it mather that it is layer 2?
01:42
@BobEbert it matters because it's different :P, a router routes packets, a switch switches frames, one is encapsulated in the other
@BobEbert to really dumb it down, VLANs allow you to segregate networks at layer 2, regardless of physicaly topology
02:02
@kalina the movie?
It's a colossal mind-frig
@LucasKauffman if he wanted something like subnets and vlan he could also use CIDR right? depending on the task (just to confuse things)
02:53
@silverpenguin CIDR is an addressing scheme and doesn't solve the issue VLANs try to solve
you have still the same issues as you would have with regular subnetting
btw today everyone means subnetting the CIDR way
no one uses classful IP addressing anymore aside from a few large corps that got shit tons of them
03:10
Sir please remain calm while we send some officers to pick you up. — Lucas Kauffman 1 hour ago
lmfaooooooooooooooo
I VTC'd as "unclear what you're smoking"
actually, wait a minnute...
ah, outdated whois
wtf
WTF
hahahaha

I laugh my ass off when people in the U.S. get Chinese tattoos that say "STUPID C---", etc

@RoryAlsop Cybersecurity is about risk? Shiiiiiiit I thought it was about buzzwords and cyber space :(

1 hour later…

hi
Morning
@kalina it's a badly written film, that's why.
Adi

08:32
Morning all
well as long as everybody else is of that opinion too I won't feel so bad about not having a clue about what happened
I was going to watch it again today to see if it was tiredness
@RoryAlsop well, the all point of the film is to leave you confused I guess
Mornin' All
08:47
Hihhi
@MarkBuffalo wait, are you saying that not a single person in here is insufferable?
@M'vy No, not confused - just disappointed
@kalina it's just crapness
so I finally got around to setting up onedrive on all of my windows 10 pcs rather than repeatedly ignoring it
and now I've found another issue
other than getting N and D the wrong way around with 100% accuracy today
SD card operations on a SP4 are very battery intensive
Morning
Morning
08:53
bonjour
so I found out that "netflix and chill" does not mean watching netflix and chilling
how naive of me
@kalina lol, did you not know about that...
I hope it wasn't too disturbing an experience to find out about!
well no, I was down for the other thing anyway
@kalina how so?
@M'vy "netflix and chill" = "are you down to fuck"
it's so obvious, what with one sentence containing the word netflix and the other contains down
/sigh
@kalina well you obviously don't spend/waste enough time on imgur or similar...
08:58
hmmm... ok... I guess
@RоryMcCune nope
it's a pretty well known meme
even for #Fogeys
you guys are so lucky that I dedicate so much of my internet time to being here
@RоryMcCune well, I don't know all the meme database by heart
@kalina and we're grateful for it :)
09:00
I find browsing memes sites to be a complete waste of life
I'm told that being invited in for coffee doesn't always involve coffee too
@Matthew well that's just false advertising, if I'm invited in for coffee I actually want some coffee
at least netflix and chill actually contains some netflix
@kalina Personally, I'd prefer some tea. Or hot chocolate, if it's evening
caffeine doesn't seem to impact my ability to sleep
@kalina I just don't like the taste of coffee waits for the cries of "fraud" and "not a real hacker"
09:06
jQuery everyone!
My new way of saying hello,morning and goodnight in a cool way!
was it something I said?
yes it was
I'm not sure jQuery is cool anymore
if you wish to greet people, you should greet them, blurting random words won't work
I don't even know jquery it is just a style name I use!
@HenryWHHack if you don't know what it means...perhaps you shouldn't shout it as you enter a room. Just a thought.
09:16
Morning folks
"folks" is too generic for group of special snowflakes like us
you should greet us all individually
In person
at least it's better than blurting jquery at us
you're all individual
(I'm not)
@ColinCassidy I'm not!
Damn
Ninja-ed
09:17
I AM NOT AN INDIVIDUAL, I AM A FREE WOMAN! oh...
something about numbers
cable ties and dolly eyes
Who is number 1?
@kalina Do you volunteer for the hunger games? Are you divergent?
@RoryAlsop don't know but he's on first
I've never seen hunger games
@RoryAlsop you are number 6
09:18
I can't bring myself to watch jlaw's face for ten hours
I am not a number. I am a free man.
Number Six: Where am I?
Number Two: In the Village.
I so miss the Prisoner.....
Number Six: What do you want?
Number Two: Information.
Mostly Rover
09:19
@RoryAlsop ya know I have a bad feeling we're the only ones who know this reference...
the only reason I know anything about a 1960s tv show is because I've been to Portmeirion
@kalina brilliant
I love the place
Mensa does an annual conference there
@RоryMcCune I've been to Portmeirion too - long time ago now
well I guess that shows t'other @RоryMcCune with his naysaying
back to being oblivious
@kalina pls you know the name but you didn't know the quote :op
09:21
@ThomasP probably is aware of it as well
Just because the bears are omniscient
@RоryMcCune and yet I knew it well enough to paraphrase one of the most memorable lines from the series
which started this entire prisoner discussion
@RоryMcCune Well, I've heard of it. does it count ?
@kalina ah but was that knowing or just lucky happenstance
@M'vy indeed it does, welcome to club #Fogey
here's your pipe and slippers
of course it was
basically I type nonsense and occasionally it matches up with something that previously existed
such is life
@kalina - I wasn't sure if you knew it from the series, or from the Iron Maiden song of the same name (as obviously that is one of your favourite bands)
The intro has that bit from the series
09:24
gosh Iron Maiden, I obviously love that noise which is why I love dubstep so much
...
That would be a crossover that everyone could hate :-)
everybody knows the three most important things in my life are drugs, sex and dubstep
Iron Dubstep
Really? Dubstep?
Ironstep
09:25
got mah drivers license
@RoryAlsop oh right, yes, hmm, no I like ambient trance obv
@kalina Well - two out of three ain't bad
@Lighty So it was possibly you who nearly drove me of the road yesterday?
09:26
@RoryAlsop well if everybody was identical the world would be boring
Yarp
Very very very boring
@Lighty fortunately there are several countries worth of land between you and I
Objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are
@Arperum No, that was my Hitman that won't get paid
(to link the two conversations)
Or to kill the whole chat. Either way is good
09:30
@Lighty Your hitman sucks.
@kalina I am unsure of exact genres, but I think I like ambient trance... I think. Y'know, when just chilling by the pool.
is "chilling by the pool" a euphemism?
the last time I was asked to do something and chill it turned out to not be what I thought it was
It wasn't, but it is now
Hahahahahahaha
@kalina No, it just means sitting in a chest freezer which has been dragged out to the poolside
your manatee has returned
09:45
ooh! this is a first for us, on-topic spam!

Fancy spam
I hope you all now know to blacklist that cert.
oo should have commented before nuking - "There is nothing ethical about spam"
I blacklist all certs
That's shocking @AviD! I'm going to speak to my contacts at EC|Council
all they proove is that you knew something once upon a time
09:47
And tell them just how bad an idea that was
@RoryAlsop do you really have contacts there...?
@kalina possibly not even that...
@kalina no they dont, they prove you were able to pass a test
@AviD which is basically what I said unless you're going to be ridiculously pedantic, in which case I don't have time to read anything else you say today
@AviD Yep - quite a lot of chat with them as I try and help them improve their horribly broken CPE system
As I have my C|CISO but can't upload my CPE, so may have to ditch it ;-/
09:49
@kalina not pedantic, I am saying explicitly that "passing a test" has little to do with "knowing something"
you know enough to pass a test, which indicates you know something
@kalina thats not how these tests work
you can't pass a test while knowing nothing
@kalina thats my point, you can
many have
if I keep up my winning streak of misspelling every word I type today I'm going to have a nervous breakdown
@AviD if you had zero knowledge you could not pass a test
09:50
@kalina well, zero productive knowledge.
You guys are saying the same thing
@RoryAlsop I said it first, he said I was wrong, I'm obliged to circular argument until he dies
it's in my genetics
Lol
What is the lifespan of a tigger?
I guess that depends how close they get to the fire :-)
@RoryAlsop I dunno, there is a difference between knowing something at a some point in time, even if you are likely to forget most of it, as opposed to not really knowing anything of value in the first place.
@kalina hehe
@RoryAlsop lol
so I had a nice surprise yesterday - knock on the day as I'm getting ready to leave, its the FedEx guy. With a package for me. It was SE swag! woot! :D
@AviD yay. Have you told @Simon?
09:52
I actually read that spam before i flagged it... seemed like interesting spam... better than the beauty and erectile disfunction ones
DE swag laced with anthrax
(Sorry @Simon)
@RoryAlsop lol, just now
@AviD Which swag?
09:53
waiting for the spam which tells the whole of SE that we have won the Nigerian lottery
@RoryAlsop I think it was the 1M one from meta.se
there is a difference between knowing something and knowing something useful, but assuming that any use of the phrase "knowing something" automatically implies "knowing something useful" is merely setting everyone up for silly non-arguments like that
@AviD cool
shirt / cup / pen / notebook
Adi
Adi
@Ixrec Wrong room?
09:53
The SO branded stuff? Is nice
@Adi scroll up
@silverpenguin well, some people here need both
@Adi he is responding to AviD and kalina's discussion
Email I just received:
everyone seems to be getting swag lately, was there an event I didn't hear about?
09:54

@Ixrec meta had a few ways to get free swag
You have to frequent meta.se to spot them :-)
@Ixrec okay if we're getting pedantic, the implied meaning of "knowing something" is "knowing something relevant", and not "knowing how to dress oneself and use a pen".
Adi
Adi
@kalina Oh shit! I need to update mine to prevent expiring!
@kalina Nice. Checked haveibeenpwned.com lately?
@RoryAlsop yeah, real nice.
09:55
@Iszi no, I guess I should do that
@Ixrec this was like 3 months ao
@RoryAlsop once upon a time, you got some from actively being part of the elections
@M'vy that was cancelled because of Evan
hahaha
@RoryAlsop details?
09:56
It's true - the most anti SE person alive kept being sent free t-shirts as he ran in every election
my latest email:
BEST PRICE TODAY:

Viagra|Price: $0.77
Cialis Price_ $0.72
Viagra Professional|Price- $2.42
Cialis Professional|Price: $3.20
Levitra|Price- $ 1.79
there is a professional viagra price
Is it better in some way?
@RoryAlsop was he at least in the last nomination phase ?
Adi
Adi
@kalina Whoa!
This is a quality fake site
I thoguht you'd like it
yes, my primary email address has been pwned
09:58
@Adi whats the source code like? this is probably just a copy paste job of source code
good job for unique passwords and... well, the fact that email address is just a forward to another email address
Adi
Adi
@silverpenguin The source code is fantastic
I advise you to check it
@Adi images not available here at work. It's good though, is it?
@AviD - was that CEH spammer from EC!Council?
@RoryAlsop I assumed
didnt really say much other than that
@Adi those look like some nifty plugins there, I recognize the Adblocker and HTTPS Everywhere, but whats the rest? :P
10:08
@Lighty There is ghostery and a cookie editing/removal plugin that I'm too lazy to check the name for.
10:22
ghostery best plugin ever
@kalina yeah I run that and uBlock Origin
and HTTPS everywhere
@RоryMcCune Still getting to grips with Ghostery. Noscript did some things better. Ghostery completely breaks a few sites in such a way that they cannot be used...
@RoryAlsop yeah it does need the odd disable, but the tracker blocking is nice and less invasive than noscript in JavaScript heavy sites
I've never had ghostery break a site
I miss chrome on my tablet
tablet being sp4
because chrome is too battery hungry
@RоryMcCune You clearly don't do enough web testing!
10:34
@Matthew oh I never run those in my test profiles :)
And from my previous life as a web dev, I remember having a nice discussion with a graphic designer who wanted to know why they couldn't see the adverts they'd spent several days making. Or any other adverts, for that matter...
that would be a bad idea (tm)
Firefox profiles are one of my favourite things, lets me isolate plugin sets and logins to different browser instances
@RоryMcCune I tend to just wipe profiles on a regular basis, and use Chrome for other browsing
10:56
Just laughed a little bit at a travel SE answer which included "And, no, you can't catch and release with a harpoon. It makes an explosion and a big hole."
