Do they still show in star wall?
Oh dear...
unfortunately but I worked around that by removing the star list

Q: Infrmation Security learning

LolitaI'm new in information security. I need some advices about how to start learning about this area. What are the courses I should take? From where can I start? Give me please an outline to pursue to learn about information security.

"I suggest learning how to spell 'information' would be a good start"

Q: What effect will listing my religion as an activity on my resume produce?

guestI'd like to list Orthodox Christianity as an activity on my resume. This is not a not-so-subtle evangelism tool but an actual activity. I spend (what I think) is a considerable amount of time attending services, reading books, and doing other things involved with being an Orthodox Christian. It i...

Adi
Important note: This is highly country-dependent. For example, in the Nordics, it's generally viewed quite positively to list some of your hobbies somewhere in your CV. It shows you're generally a balanced person with an interesting personality. — Adnan 18 hours ago
o you did say that
^_^
Adi
Adi
Unless you're applying to a job in the porn industry, why would you list the type of dildos you like to play with?
Same principal applies for religion
It's a good thing to add your hobbies here too I believe.
12:36
yeah I've seen that around, I never understood it
I've been asked that in interviews too
I find it rather inappropriate
What is?
Adi
Adi
@AviD Hobbies?
I think next time I will respond with @Adi's analogy
@Adi yeah
not really a thing on resumes here, but I've been asked it.
Adi
Adi
Meh, I like it
People want to know who the individual is, I think it's fair.
12:37
now, on the other hand, I've been asked things like "what are your favorite tech blogs", now that makes sense
Adi
Adi
We have this company in Finland reaktor.com
@Simon "who the individual is" outside of anything related to work, is irrelevant.
"how many kids do you have?" -> irrrelevant
Adi
Adi
They only hire you if you're special somehow
@AviD I don't think so. If you want to find out if the individual is likely to fit in the company's culture, you gotta know who the person is beyond work I believe.
"What kind of day care do they have?" -> irrrelevant
Adi
Adi
12:38
You need to be competent and know your shit, of course
"Do you take them rock climbing?" -> irrrelevant
"Do you ever go rock climbing?" -> just as irrrelevant
Adi
Adi
but you should also be an artist, have your own beer line, fly rockets, etc.
Anything about kids should not be asked, that I agree.
@Simon I think you misunderstand what culture is.
Though you would likely fit nice in a brostartup in SF/SV.
Suuuure.
12:40
@Simon what is the difference between those two questions?
Adi
Adi
Well, in your case it's understandable
You're a grumpy old man who has no hobbies
@AviD "Oh, the guy has 188 kids? He'll always be distracted from work"
@Simon bullshit.
"Oh I have a harem of 17 wives, plus 38 servants to manage the kids. I only see them on weekends."
pls
or are you looking to see if he is an asshole, that is legitimate.
Adi
Adi
12:42
Having a chat about hobbies in the interview is very normal
@Adi That's how I see it too.
Adi
Adi
Of course, @Avi doesn't have a job
I've actually seen (my ex-boss interviewing for my replacement) being asked: "Oh you have 3 kids? how will you be able to do the job??"
Adi
Adi
and hasn't had one in a long time
It was a woman, of course.
12:42
"I have... I think 4 computers. Maybe 5. Not counting the old ones that probably still work"
Adi
Adi
so he doesn't know how it works
That was the most serious question in the interview.
@Adi heh this is true
@AviD That's exactly why I said it should not be asked.
I don't see how someone might not give you a job because of a hobby, unless it's fucked up.
@Adi no its not about "not knowing", its about not willing to put up with absolute bullshit.
and the fact that its common, is why I still refuse to work at most companies.
Adi
Adi
1 min ago, by Adi
so he doesn't know how it works
12:43
@Simon oh I agree with that
in which case it is completely irrelevant to ask in an interview.
Adi
Adi
Companies don't hire monkeys
They hire people
It's normal to learn about this person you're hiring
@Adi you think I dont know, because I'm not willing to put up with bullshit?
that's a lot of computers
@Adi yes, but in an interview it should be about things pertaining to the job, and all aspects. Leave the socializing outside.
I have... oh
I have two desktops and two surfaces
Adi
Adi
12:45
@AviD All more confirming this
2 mins ago, by Adi
so he doesn't know how it works
but no old ones
Adi
Adi
@Avi Decent companies have multiple interviews
@Adi no, its confirming that I will not put up with bullshit.
Adi
Adi
One is usually about the stuff you're talking about
@kalina Desktop, 2 laptops, 2 nucs, not counting my dad's 2.
12:45
again, just because people do it, does not mean it is okay
Adi
Adi
Skills work and whatnot
by any stretch of the imagination.
@Adi shitty ones have none ;p
I try to avoid having a pile of old hardware
@Adi I was under the impression 2 was the minimum
12:46
unless it's synths, but they're not in piles
One 'general' one, and one technical
@Adi sure there are other interviews about "soft skills", your personality, etc.
but not your private life.
one general use, one specialized use
"what car do you drive? how big a house do you live in? "
Adi
Adi
@JourneymanGeek Usually, yes. In my job, I had 4
12:46
@AviD Nice hobbies.
so you don't have all of your silly software and games and background tasks running on the machine you need to work
"I live in a house, that's my hobby"
Adi
Adi
@AviD If you can't see how that is different from hobbies, then discussing with you is pointless
@Adi of course I see how its different.
Adi
Adi
Companies don't usually have internal clubs for how big your house is
but they usually have clubs for rock climbing
12:47
but if you cant see how it is equally irrelevant, and thus inappropriate, then discussing with you is pointless
Which may help for team bonding.
you can go ahead and continue to be a good little sheepie, and your circumstances might necessitate that, but that does not mean it is an acceptable situation
Adi
Adi
@AviD They're not equally irrelevant
and wait wait
irrelevant to what?
irrelevant to learning about you as a person?
@Simon and if I dont rockclimb, but excel at everything work related? that is EXACTLY why it is a BAD thing to be asking.
Adi
Adi
Because it's definitely relevant
12:49
@Adi to learning about how you will do your job, and fit with the rest of team as they do their jobs
Adi
Adi
@AviD Then you don't work in a team. You open your own company and work on your own
@Adi learning about you "as a person" is irrelevant
Adi
Adi
which brings us to
7 mins ago, by Adi
so he doesn't know how it works
@Adi hahhaa
fair enough
and here we are
I guess we're having a culture clash.
Adi
Adi
12:50
@Simon No no no
That's not culture clash
@Simon again you use that word, I do not think it means what you think it means
Adi
Adi
Avi genuinely knows very little about how companies work these days
Whenever we have such discussion, we reach this point
@Adi actually, thats not it at all.
@AviD You think other people in your society would say the same or not?
I know very well that most companies DO work the way you say.
Adi
Adi
12:51
I remember we've had discussions like that maybe 15-16 times on the DMZ
I am just unwilling to accept it.
Adi
Adi
Avi ALWAYS gives the wrong advice
I don't know many people here who would be against hobbies in your CV, hence the culture clash.
which is why there are so few companies I would consider as valid .
Adi
Adi
Like he tells you to refuse working with a shitty client
12:51
@Adi loooooooooooooooooooooool
Adi
Adi
then you realize he has his own business
@Adi again, depends on your perspective and circumstances.
@Adi Best.Advice.Ever.
Ignore anybody who tells you otherwise (as a general guideline), in fact run screaming.
again, sometimes, for some people, it might make sense to compromise or make sacrififices. but as a general guideline, DEFINITELY do not work with a shitty client.
the ignore function breaks chat
unless they make it VERY worth your while.
I have a huge white space between the bottom of the screen and the last message -.-
12:54
@kalina hehehe lol soooorryyy
What did you say to get ignored?
oh I see what's going on
chat only shows a number of messages at a time unless you load more with the buttons at the top, and that number includes ignored messages
hey dont get me wrong though, I am fully aware that I am in very happy circumstances, and lucky to be so. In other circumstances, it would be harder to say no to bad clients, and in fact I have even said yes to them on occassion (though I've always regretted it). Still, if you want to ignore your own power, and your own needs, dont think I'm saying you shouldn't. It took me a long time too to realize that I can make my own choice, and that I can insist on behaving like a human grownup.
That's more than I can read at once, I should be done by next week.

^ elaborated tl;dr
@Simon I put the room in timeout. She took it as a personal affront, and felt that I thought she was about to explode. It was not the case.
12:58
@AviD o lawd
@Simon heh
Personally, breathing gets me ignored.
@JourneymanGeek you're not chatty enough and this is boring and almost like I'm chatting with myself
heh
/sigh
12:59
@Simon ask @kalina if the same thing happens with the stars. Like does she see a half-empty starwall?
@kalina sorry
@AviD I can't, I'm ignored.
ah right
I'm currently dealing with a shitload of personal drama, and I somewhat lack the spoons to be my usual witty self
it's fine, if chat stays boring long enough I'll be compelled to spend another several months away again
13:00
ok bye
:( personal drama is the worst
@kalina or you could unblock some people
Oh some of it is someone elses personal drama, which is even worse than my personal drama
did you do that to yourself voluntarily?

anyway, I'll be chattier when the current mess blows over, or if someone calls me about a job application I made
naw, family

yeah figured
@JourneymanGeek Then clean it you donut.
Mmm, food

mmm food
Donuts would be lovely this morning.
@Matthew lol
@Simon They would be nice, but I made a mistake with lunch yesterday. Greggs had belgium buns at 75p each, or 2 for £1. I bought 2, and then (the mistake) ate them both instead of giving one away...
@Matthew Instant karma for being egoist.

Q: I found unknown PHP code on my server. How do I de-obfuscate the code?

Mark BuffaloWe've been getting a lot of noise regarding hacked PHP files here, and it's taking a lot of time to answer these questions. In many cases, they are off-topic. We've had a discussion about this on Information Security Meta, and many people want these posts to stay. However, nearly every single p...

I was totally willing as well

aww I've already upvoted both of them
Hm so the repair store send me a order sheet including "software upgrade" for my phone. I wonder if it's just standard procedure, or if they're gonna erase my drive.
13:14
@M'vy You got malware, son.
your phone has a drive?
@kalina they all do, they store data
@MarkBuffalo I got a silver for, effectively, a link
flash is hardly a drive
@Simon ah ah. I already had google OS on it
but disk is encrypted. So you know.
13:16
@M'vy Some iOS/Windoze fan would probably say that anything from Google is malware equivalent for privacy.
@Matthew yeah, I got a silver for an opinion post
why would you even allow a third party to install software on your device
do you not remember rule 3?
couple of my posts are blatant opinions... but they needed to be said
@MarkBuffalo Hang on, I'll flag them.
@Simon that's what I was trying to hint :)
13:17
it's not rule 3, how embarrassing
@M'vy o loooooooool
I suppose it could apply
My bad.
@kalina Well I did not. They just added that in the order sheet.
set fire to them for unauthorized access to the software on the device
13:17
I've only ask for hardware repair
@Simon they are answers
@kalina It's not "By joining Star Corps each individual tacitly consents to give up his inalienable rights to life, liberty and adequate toilet facilities"
If they do touch software (and I'll know cause they'd have to delete all the data)
but I backed them up with references
Well I'll go back to system factory settings
13:18
@MarkBuffalo flegged
it's in defense of encryption vs. government tyranny
@Matthew pls that's not what I meant
@kalina yeah, that would be a real catharsis
oh noes, a yawn so powerful it made my eyes leak
@kalina Leak tears, or leak blood. The former isn't too bad, the latter suggests problems
13:23
@Matthew Women in general have problems
@MarkBuffalo -.-
looooooooooool
@kalina :( sorry
blabla
@MarkBuffalo yeah, they're usually called "men"
13:32
@AviD agreed
@kalina Fun fact: all mammals yawn, except giraffes.
I had to cover my mouth to not laugh loudly.
pornu and his fun facts
@ThomasPornin so why dont they yawn
@ThomasPornin You can make most mammals yawn by yawning at them. Doesn't work for non-mammals though
@LucasKauffman Nobody really knows why. It is an open research question.
Also, giraffes sleep less than 2 hours per day. And their tongue is blue.
13:35
@ThomasPornin another PhD possibility for zoologoists
I want a Smurf tongue.
I also should get a tattoo on my tongue.
@Simon Go Smurf hunting then...
@Matthew Did you see the weather outside here?
It's not a weather friendly to Smurf hunting.
@ThomasPornin Oh god damn it.
13:37
btw I heard a good joke the other day
"Denial of service attacks is the e-way of throwing toilet paper over someone's house"
@Simon A tongue tattoo is a concept that looks both painfully stupid and stupidly painful.
C++ is a modern language and it does provide array structures that check for out of bounds situations, but the code obviously runs faster without checking everything all the time. I'll eventually come here to downvote this answer, once I have the reputation. — Tomáš Zato 10 mins ago
Aah, threats !
@ThomasPornin that is a fun fact, that I didn't know!
at least we know I'm not a giraffe
well that and I'm short
@LucasKauffman that analogy isn't quite correct, though
@Matthew Schizoid personalities (note: nothing to do with schizophrenia) are less likely to be subject of induced yawning.
surely a denial of service attack would be like turning up to the target's house with 500 of your mates and just driving up and down their road so nobody else can

A: DDoS - Impossible to stop?

Tom LeekImagine a shopping mall. By definition, anybody can enter the mall and then browse the shops. It is public. The shops are expecting people to come by, look at the displays, maybe enter and then buy things. In the mall, there is a shopkeeper, who sells, say, computers. Let's call him Jim. He want...

13:43
well fine you can use a mall analogy as well if you wanted
@ThomasPornin quick, call @diagprov! he is our resident C++ neckbeard expert!
@ThomasPornin What about tattoos on other body parts?
@Simon Can be dangerous. One of my colleagues nearly flashed our CEO when showing off his other body part
@Simon I am not a fan of tattoos, aesthetically speaking.
@Matthew Hahaha.
13:48
me either
@ThomasPornin That was my thought, until I decided that I should give it a go.
And now I have projects in mind that cost a lot of monies.
In some rare cases, tattoo ink migrates through the body and accumulates in ganglia, where they may show up as cancer metastases look-alike, leading to confusion and useless surgery.
o
That won't stop me though #yolo
froyo?
Also, I'd like to know if the leak is due to the artist's fault (e.g. going too deep) or it is something "natural" that can happen with your skin.

Q: how to catch a packages from wifi that i connected to ( or not connected to )?

Yanshof I have wifi connection - and i want to use something like wireshark to catch all the packages that my wifi router is listen to. How can i do it? If i want to catch that packages from the router that i count not connect to - is it possible ?

> In order to cover his tracks, Bob performs his dealings with the newspaper under the pseudonym of "bob" (which is his name, but spelled backwards).
lol.
I tried! Wireshark wiki links and everything in comments
@Simon It is "natural" because that's what ganglia are for: to deal with unwanted elements below the outer skin layer.
The ink type can change things, of course.
> Gunther is smart, in his own twisted way. He contacts the newspaper, and is first puzzled, but then has an intuitive revelation: ah-HA! "bob" is just "Bob" spelled backwards !
13:53
Hence why it is important to choose your artist properly!
what on earth are you linking us
I introduced 5 colleagues to secse
hopefully they are posting
great, more newbies
@Simon you need a tattooist who will not charge you :-)
don't you think it's a bit counter productive to be introducing real life people to an information security site with a chat room in which you hide using an assumed name?
13:59
@RoryAlsop Oh I wish.
Also, I guess it's fair to pay because it means that I won't get my whole body tattoo'd and once and then eventually be like "o, no more room left".
@kalina You assume he doesn't use the same assumed name in real life!
I have no interest to get other body parts than my arms tattoo'd at the moment though.
