22:00
and most transported back to where they came from
@TildalWave yeah I've heard interviews with some of the poor people in the big camp in Calais, seriously thinking that England is some kind of land of opportunity for illegal immigrants... this is unlikely to be the case!
one of the refugees on the train going through my city was asked by a reporter why wouldn't they stay here, and the woman replied that they heard it was a poor country ...
dunno, sometimes I think that was told to them intentionally by someone
there's not one person starving here or not having at least a shelter to be in... not the case in "richer" countries
I guess they think that more money means more compassion
@TildalWave geez, yeah you get the impression lots of people heard lots of stories that ain't true... they'll find out the score tho' apparently quite a few iraqi's are going home from Finland after finding out about the cold!
@RоryMcCune well that upset me because I was pro that we take as many as we can as soon as we can, and offer them the best that we can ... mainly, because of security... intelligence basically, before the baddies come here and realize that borders are leaking
and the most upsetting is that, sadly that is true, people that seem to oppose that the most were not too long ago refugees here as well
@TildalWave that is part of the sad bit that people don't see themselves in the refugees...
22:10
@TildalWave In fact, France worked real hard at being unattractive, and it pays off: immigrants who go to France only do so as a step towards UK or Germany.
@ThomasPornin I know, and it seems to me that at least some other countries (I'm not gonna name them here) were speaking on behalf of our interests too
Right-wing parties still try to spread the fear of all these foreigners rushing to France to grab all the social benefits, but in reality they tend to rush from France.
it would also be nice if our leaders grew a backbone, but that's not gonna happen
@TildalWave In the long term, welcoming and settling all these immigrants is the only option that makes sense, economically speaking, and it is also the only stance that can be described as "honourable". But getting public opinions to accept that is another matter.
agreed
22:17
@ThomasPornin I disagree with you on the economic point of view. WWII got a big chunk of the world out of a deep economic crisis and brought several decades of prosperity.
Or, in few words: crime pays.
@Gilles In the long term it is all about demography. Western people don't make enough babies. Immigration fixes that.
@Gilles for those who steal, yes
there's also victims
I mean let's be honest, western prosperity is built on poverty of most of the rest of the world
@TildalWave lmfao
@RоryMcCune Can you blame them? Cold > oppression :p
@TildalWave This is the old "luxury debate"
On the one hand, rich people/countries exist because they got wealth from the poor.
@ThomasPornin My grandfather rushed away from France as well... and that's how I become a halfling... or a thirdling.
22:24
On the other hand, rich people and countries can get things done, that would not be done otherwise.
E.g. medecine.
And science.
So whether there should or should not be inequalities in wealth is not an easy question.
I'm okay with immigrants... just not illegal ones; they've already shown disrespect for the rules/law, and don't belong here
@ThomasPornin sure, but it's wise to have some perspective... because what you'd mostly hear here "in the west" is that we're dealing with "their problems"... and that isn't true, most of those nations were just fine on their own, then we came there
Also, I'm more than willing to take in refugees from Syria...
also, both medicine and science come from "there"
including personal hygiene
@schroeder Yo
@schroeder You ever find out about that weird DNS thing?
@schroeder tinfoiling here but check out this: googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2016/02/…
22:28
@TildalWave Real Science, as in "scientific method", is a West-European invention.
@ThomasPornin What about the ancient arab world?
@ThomasPornin method yes, disciplines no
@MarkBuffalo yep - it was Chrome
@schroeder Chrome was... doing weird DNS queries...?
22:29
@MarkBuffalo That's not science. That's philosophy, mathematics... but the breakthrough occurred in the late 16th century in Europe.
@MarkBuffalo yep - when you launch Chrome it sends out 3 random strings as DNS quries
Though it took some time to yield actual benefits.
@schroeder lol... and we were tinfoiling for no reason
@MarkBuffalo for the same reasons malware or an attacker would
The non-science method brought us every advances up to (and including) the steam engine. Everything invented afterwards is a fruit of science.
22:30
Wait a minute...
@schroeder But didn't you say that it was trying to query other random places on your corporate network?
or did I misunderstand you
@ThomasPornin but it isn't exclusive to specific parts of the world
@MarkBuffalo yep - that was a different process, I found out
@ThomasPornin I don't know, I thought Alhazen introduced the scientific method
@schroeder What and why was it doing that?
@MarkBuffalo Windows Update
and additionally, most scientific papers I read are authored by non-native family names
22:32
@schroeder Oh... windows update was trying to contact unknown servers on your corporate network that aren't even involved in the update process?
@TildalWave I told you: immigration is a good idea...
so even if we can say that certain parts of the world finance most of science, that is not true for "who" is doing that science
so the chain of events went: user logs in, launches Chrome, Chrome sends out random DNS queries. A couple minutes later, WU kicks in, checks for updates on the Windows servers, THEN SCANS THE ENTIRE NETWORK LOOKING FOR DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS FOR WINDOWS 10
@TildalWave Remember that we were talking about wealthy countries, not populations.
@schroeder WTF
22:33
@MarkBuffalo yep
@ThomasPornin I know, sorry, I drifted there a bit LOL
@MarkBuffalo even so far as to log in and poke around
basically, I can agree that accumulation of wealth has its benefits, but I strongly object to anyone having the right to be smug about it
@schroeder I... I don't trust that at all...
@schroeder Malware can modify processes
Is this a documented feature?
@MarkBuffalo yep ...
22:35
vomit....
there's a switch to turn off
Got some links? I'm turning that the hell off
"By default, Windows 10 enables downloads of updates only from other PCs from your local network"
but the behaviour also shows up on Win7
@schroeder That is good to know.
Thank you kindly
this is old news
what's the problem?
22:50
@kalina The NSA. Modrators. Bankers. Trump. Has to be one of those.
all of those things are boring
fine I'll watch youtube
Just spent the last two hours mopping
old place or the new place?
22:56
My workplace flooded
not nice
Very not nice
the roof gave in or something?
We will learn tomorrow whether $380k worth of precision equipment was ruined
or drains covered by snow?
22:57
They think the foundation is damaged
It's nearly 25°C outside right now
Pouring rain all day on top of like 30cm of snow
@DavidFreitag oh they finally promoted you?
@kalina Yeah but it doesn't come with a pay raise
@kalina mop, not a broom :P
22:59
is that some kind of witch joke
yeah...
hey er
Are you trying to say I'm magical?
watch full movies on youtube?
pay monies to watch full movies on youtube?
when did that happen
since google video
23:00
that's interesting
can you watch it repeatedly or just once?
yeah its a 24 hour period
as I recall
€14 to watch for 24 hours?!
Are you sure that's not to buy? Cause you can buy forever or rent for 24 hours
I don't know
or care that much
what they charge more for hd
think so
23:03
so if you "buy" it do you actually get to download it
you should be able to
what do you mean by should
ive never actually bought anything from google video
why not
Because netflix
23:05
why netflix
Because there are no ads and I pay $4.99/mo for as much as I want
My mouth is on fire. Again.
why is your mouth on fire
I'm innocent
Hot peppers and sriracha in my burrito
(Yes that was a euphemism)
Luckily I have some chocolate
why do I even want a netflix subscription
Because it's more morally correct than torrenting and it's bucket loads better than live tv and hulu
23:10
I don't watch live tv or hulu
Well neither do I. Also, I have a bunch of people who use my netflix account (which you can split into "users") my grandmother, father, sister...
how does that work
Up to four people can use a netflix account simultaneously
And you can pay slightly more per month to support up to like 10 people I think it is
well t hat's just silly
fine it will be more interesting than youtube
It's kinda nice. After watching a few things Netflix will get a feel for what you like and build a list of things it thinks you might like
23:16
another company that thinks I'm in some random country
oh right that completely breaks everything
lol
Nothing like fixing a problem that's been hounding us as a company for longer than I've been here... in just 10 minutes
:->
@MarkBuffalo I have done that pretty consistently since I started in Engineering two years ago
It's the consequence of working at a company where nobody has the motivation to do anything
Feels good don't it
This problem required obscure knowledge of technology and protocols long forgotten
Like most things the good feeling fades after a while. It becomes mundane.
I'm like wait. ...I've done this before
23:24
Yiss mining barge skills finally finished
5 days of traning... :|
I feel really good when I solve problems
Never gets old
Recently it seems difficult to get excited about anything
Even the prospect of being excited seems unexciting
23:39
Got up to level 34 on fallout 4 today. That's me played for nearly 22 hours so far. Probably not progressing as fast as @kalina but then I do like clearing everything as I go, and ensuring I discover every single location so I do a lot of walking
@RoryAlsop I used to be a gamer, then I took a baby on my knee ...
@schroeder pls.
@RoryAlsop i haven't gotten past bunker hill yet and i'm like level 40
i've been grinding on my settlements :))))
@RoryAlsop I REALLLY miss gaming
@Ohnana settlements are my least favourite bit. I have taken to hunting deathclaws
@schroeder @schroeder stole a baby?!?!?! Someone call the Canadian Mounties!!!
23:48
Me and Nick Valentine in power armour. I use a machine gun and a haunted sword
And a lot of stimpaks
@schroeder - baby time is best for gaming. You are up at random hours, knowing you can't get a good sleep, so might as well play :-)
@RoryAlsop BANGER
deathclaw hunting is also fun
pew pew
