Hiya there, @MarkBuffalo - congrats on going over 10k
Has anyone here participated in Key Signing Ceremonies?
@DeerHunter @ThomasPornin has
Are these root key computers soundgapped?
@Gilles - assume the HSM is secure.
Yet there's a trojan attempting to sidechannel data from the HSM (iffy, I know)
@DeerHunter trojan running where? On a computer in the same room as the HSM?
@AviD You pervert!
I agree. But as you say, since there are a non-trivial number of q's that need to be manually retagged - lets do it slowly... Please, everyone jump in (but only a bit at a time!) — AviD ♦ 8 hours ago
e.g. a participant's mobile phone?
18:30
@Gilles - Either that or the signing computer (breached security)
@Gilles - the idea is the trojan is inside the signing computer, can attack the HSM and needs to exfiltrate the key into the wild.
A participant (all resemblance to living bears is entirely co-incidental) has a mobile turned on...
Somebody has surely thought about that - e.g. in guidelines for CAs, right?
Couldn't find anything there :(
@DeerHunter sounds like a question you could ask on the site
@DeerHunter yep
@DeerHunter so we're looking at a situation where someone has pre-loaded malware on a computer which is going to be used as a air-gapped signing computer and has also planted malware on the mobile phone of one of the participants of the ceremony
... it's a touch unlikely isn't it?
@RoryAlsop - correct, and it is unlikely as h*ll
the malware would need to know about the HSM that it was going to be connected to + have an exploit for the HSM to get the key out
18:41
@Rory McCune - wrong Rory, sorry
and would have to do that largely blind (unless the pwned phone was in range and could transmit a reasonable data rate)
whilst I guess in theory it's all possible, I'm not sure I can think of a scenario where that's the easiest attack vector
Maybe my real question is where to find the technical guidelines
for key-signing ceremonies... hmm that would be a question for the bear or perhaps @RoryAlsop . I've not done it directly but know people who have, I recall there being a lot of paperwork and beaurocrary involved
it seemed to take days
...bureaucrory
well assuming the participants weren't just having a booze-up away from management under the guise of key signing that is
18:45
empty Veuve and whiskey bottles would be a dead give-away, though
@DeerHunter security.stackexchange.com/questions/24896/… would seem to give some info, if you've not seen it already
@DeerHunter danke
@DeerHunter I would, but I don't have any friends
@RоryMcCune - the links I've found say nothing about flashing LEDs or audio speaker physically torn out...
In fact, the Wiki says 'From the moment the vault door is closed until it is re-opened, everything is also video recorded.' Where's video, there's audio...
@DeerHunter Dude!
I must be channeling @MarkBuffalo, though
18:54
Peace is a lie, there is only tinfoil
@DeerHunter sure but I'm guessing the guidelines also do say "avoid connecting the HSM to a system with HSM cracking malware on it " :op
19:27
@DeerHunter tHE ONLY ONE i HAVE BEEN DIRECTLY INVOLVED WITH HAD THEIR OWN MANUAL FOR EVERY STEP OF THE WAY: ACTION, COMMANDS TO BE TYPED, PHYSICAL MOVEMENT, NAMED INDIVIDUALS/ROLES ETC
yeeeek - caps lock
sorry
@RoryAlsop Did you forget to put your hearing aid in again :op ?

19:44
@DeerHunter there's always videos online describing the process :)
@RоryMcCune rofl
... and so on
secse is in read-only mode? my life is over
"We are failong over services now, Stack Overflow and the rest of the network will be offline for about a minute."
It's been more than a minute!
@RоryMcCune nah - had been playinig Fallout 4 and must have inadvertently hit it
@MarkBuffalo "about a minute" (admin time)
19:49
@TildalWave "Awesome, I'll be done in about a minute..." new issue pops up... takes another few days
let's just hope they don't reset the server to 0 UNIX time
@TildalWave pffft
@TildalWave noooooooooooooooooooooooo
@MarkBuffalo there's fallback for issues like that
I hope :)

A: What is the risk of copy and pasting Linux commands from a website?

MichealThere is a risk. Websites can use CSS and JavaScript to hide things and then when you copy from that website, you actually copy what they want. @Gumbo provided the example: https://thejh.net/misc/website-terminal-copy-paste. The fix: Don't copy and paste from websites you don't trust. Or visit t...

learned something new. or rather, a new application of something I've done before for totally different reasons
20:29
looks like I missed OP's point
@DeerHunter eprint.iacr.org/2016/129 <-- Extracting Keys from a PC on the other side of a wall...
@RоryMcCune think I've seen that before with a different application....
but it was done in a closed environment. this on theother hand, is insane
20:52
@RоryMcCune - thanks
@RoryAlsop - the new meaning of 'security theater', or rather, choreographed security ballet.
@TildalWave - yup, seen those before. Re: hearing aids - can be useful to record exfiltrated private keys :ppppp

Q: What are the dangers of advertising my amatuer site?

CarcigenicateI recently started server-side programming, and wrote up a page containing a drawable-canvas that lets users publically draw and save a picture, and overwrite pictures made by others. For kicks, I thought of advertising the link on social media to see what happens. I'd rather not put my compute...

21:15
@MarkBuffalo being an amateur at it and thinking since you're not getting paid for it you won't have to pay for any damage it does either
21:27
@TildalWave The "SQLi" part triggered me lol
@MarkBuffalo lolcrap! is that a real thing??
or just a stupid typo
> mysqli is a specific PHP library for connecting to MySQL
yup, sounds about right
MySQLi is PHP's library for using MySQL
@MarkBuffalo I havent seen one that isnt
but the OP shortened it to mySQLi, so I'm like "triggered triggered"
also, isnt that question kinda a bit too broad?
21:33
Well, some basic guidelines can really help
This is also easily answerable, imho
@MarkBuffalo or a link to wikipedia, owasp, etc
or a whole category of books on amazon
haha
Well, sometimes all you need to start down the road of security if for someone to tell you not to do something... so you start thinking at every turn, "should I do x?"

Q: encrypt certain drive

Joao TorresFirst of all I will try to explain my situation: I would like to keep "outsiders" eyes out of my browser activity. I don't know any other method other than to encrypt the driver where the browser is installed. How can I achieve that goal? If I encrypt that drive is there any other way he or s...

^ uh?
@MarkBuffalo well if its a specific "x", then its fine. If it is "tell me all the x's from a to z about this very generic scenario", then its not really a question, is it
@MarkBuffalo tell him that Ashley Madison has more info on their FAQ page.
21:45
lmfao
@RоryMcCune hey now, he's the cripple, I'm the deaf one.
@AviD For real deaf, or for-joke deaf?
@MarkBuffalo both
I was in artillery
so real-life provides much material for jokes at my expense
21:50
So do you wear hearing aids or something?
@AviD are you saying this is your favourite place to have a drink
something like 94% hearing
@MarkBuffalo nah, just a bit off the top
94% loss, or 94% retained?
retained
or maybe it was 74%
like at weddings I can't hear anybody talking
but I'll still hear a baby 2 floors and 3 doors away
21:51
I have gotten fairly good at reading lips
depending on context
so, I hear about 1/3 of what people are saying, I read about 1/3, and I make the rest up.
LOL
I do the same
Learned to read lips in Chinese too
@RоryMcCune heh nice
"family pub"
@MarkBuffalo it does lead to some rather.... interesting situations
Yup... I can relate there. If I ever stop and ask someone to repeat, it's usually because I "heard" something off-the-wall insane. :p
@AviD LIke this: i.imgur.com/Pkw0fR8.webm
@MarkBuffalo LOL
@MarkBuffalo or like this:
21:59
I figure when it is completely insane, I just roll with it. People already think I'm a nutter.
lol
@AviD haha
> My neeeples exploode with deliight!!
22:44
@MarkBuffalo I wonder how many are genuine
23:00
@Gilles All of them, I hope
@MarkBuffalo uh, no
you're a uhno
@Gilles Party pooper 💩

A: What is the best option for setting up a several sites supporting SSL on the same IP?

Rоry McCuneFrom what I've seen "Server Name Indication" is the main way to achieve this at the moment. One of the downsides is that older browsers won't support this so depending on the site it may not be a possibility for it to be used. Edit: Just to update following @D.W.'s and @Piskvor's comments loo...

I like this
"From what I've seen "Server Name Indication" is the main way to achieve this at the moment."
Really takes into account how rapidly infosec is changing
