05:12
thats new to me

2 hours later…
07:28
mornin' All
@kalina thought you'd like this game... indiegogo.com/projects/them-s-fightin-herds#/story
thassfunnnyyyy
07:51
@RоryMcCune I'm sorry I can't click a link that has been shared in here due to Simon
4
It's an indiegogo campaign for an MLP inspired fighting game
not the first time that's happened
the first attempt was My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic
this is the same team I think
which got legal pressure to not do that
yeah that's why they're doing this
07:53
and then the creater of FIM (Lauren Faust) went and drew them some new ponies to use
its the same game
different name
right so, in that case, "OLD"
except now they want/need $450k to write the game
if I played fighting games, which I don't, I would be interested, which I'm not
also I've learned never to kickstart anything
EVER
even if it's on a non-kickstarter site
that's like, highway to the danger zone
@kalina indiegogo is worse than kickstarter
almost as bad as gofundme
they do almost no (from what I can see) validation that campaigns aren't scams
not that I think that this one is necessarily
but I just generally don't trust indiegogo
08:06
I trust websites that take my money less and less over time
I've backed two kickstarter campaigns, one of them is progressing.No clue if stuff is delayed or not, I haven't payed enough attention to check that. The other is still running.
I thought it was a good idea tbh, but it spawned an entire new section of the gaming industry where people now sell you ideas that will never be completed rather than actual games
basically killed gaming for me
And it's from a company that already completed two earlier kickstarter campaigns. I think I invested $45 over the two projects.
there's a load of projects on crowfunding sites that are either deliberate scams or just cases of real naivety about the complexity of the task at hand (viz most hardware campaigns). I only back if I already know the company at hand, they have a track record of good delivery and I want the product to happen enough
I will wait until they release a working product and then buy it if I like it
rather than buy their wishlist and have them cut half of it at a later date
08:12
@RоryMcCune Yes, that first one I backed is a game that looks awesome, or at least did when I looked at it.
I spend enough money on my own random speculations to not need to waste more on other people's
And the second one I backed yesterday I want to happen so much. Because Blind Guardian is involved with music.
It doesn't feel like too big a risk, firstly because it's not that much money, secondly, because they already delivered on two other games they kickstarted.
I waste more money on stupid things, I can handle wasting this bit of money. And if I get something out of it, great.
yeah... it's the "if" you get something out of it part
I need to get myself sponsored by Native Instruments or something, the amount of money I keep throwing at them
Well, yes, that's why I only spend money I can live without, it's a risk, not a certainty.
It's just like playing the lottery, I do that every once in a blue moon, just for fun with a couple euros I have available for entertaining myself.
I've never played the lottery
or gambled in any fashion that was labelled as "gambling"
(obviously discounting the early kickstarters I did)
anyway this discussion about internet gambling is boring now
08:22
The total capital I've spend on gambling (including kickstarter) is < €60 euros, so nothing spectacular.
lol
45 usd in my case. I've got a second kickstarter I backed, but its a schlock mercenary one and almost certain to deliver
I guess it's just me who was the sucker who paid for alpha access to Elite, played alpha, quit the game, never played retail
I shall get a hat that says dunce on it
via kickstarter
and then never receive it
@kalina you not even going to go back once they have planetary landings and VR support?
08:40
nah, cba with it
@kalina I'm waiting to see what the Motion sickness problems are like with the launched VR products once they come out
I'm a bit prone to that, so not going to waste cash on something that just makes me ill. I can go watch reality TV for free if I want that experience.
I find by having less time available than the the time required to do the things you have to do, makes you both appreciate the time you do get off and more particular about how you spend your time off
Lol
@RоryMcCune or for it to be common enough to try before you buy?
@JourneymanGeek yeah I'd need to have a decent shot. I had a quick go on an Oculus Rift DK1 and that made me feel ill, so definitely waiting and seeing
09:13
@kalina I was the sucker who bought the early beta and the whizzy joystick @Rоry recommended and never managed to enter a station...
wow @RоryMcCune reviewing the submitted proposals for AppSecIL talks - a few are really great, most are plain awesome.
having a hard time choosing!
Choose all the talks
@AviD it's a nice problem to have!
hehe
would need like 3 days for that
@RоryMcCune definitely
@RoryAlsop also having a hard time finding a keynote speaker... You interested??
I'd love to, but for two things - getting over there is a slight financial challenge, and I'm a bit boring :-)
Would people really want me to talk at them?
09:17
@RoryAlsop oh I doubt you're boring
@RoryAlsop in your thick scottish accent? Of course!
people love a good thick scottish accent
but, yes I think you would have good stuff to talk about.
our keynote last year was, umm, less than stellar.
So really the challenge is the getting there :-(
Oh, who was it?
And what was their subject matter
2 years ago was very good - he talked about VC investment in security startups, lots of interest :-)
keynotes are tricky to do well
09:19
@RoryAlsop well since I'm badmouthing, Id rather not say :)
can't be too techy but need to get the audience right
(you can look it up online though... ;-) )
@RоryMcCune very true
which is hard if you don't know the audience well
@RoryAlsop I thought it was interesting - it was about pushing SDLC into a big corporate
"Turning the battleship", or something like that
sounds interesting
09:20
CISO of one of the biggest tech companies
(well to me)
@RоryMcCune had some good parts, but overall it wasnt great. I think its as you said, he missed the target
so I guess if the audience is mostly start-ups they won't care to hear stories about corps
though one of his competitors was very excited about it...
09:21
@RоryMcCune well... the audience is a very big mix. the point is, everyone WANTS a startup, even those that are at corps.... ;-)
Yeah, that's the balance :-)
@RоryMcCune part of the problem is he spent too much time explaining the challenges of the company, including the context of what the company does... many people said it came off very pitch-y.
@AviD sounds like you get a bit of a different crowd from the Eurpean OWASP events...
2 years before that, we had an incredible keynote from some Corporate SVP from CA talking about supply chains...
09:23
from AppSecEU I thought that there were a lot of devs, so talks about solving dev problems went well
wait, did I say incredible? I meant "incredibly boring".
The ones that do it well just have their presence as the pitch
I was going to say, CA supply chains doesn't sound like a good starting place!
@RоryMcCune really? to me it seemed mostly security people.
09:23
And then talk through a topic they are interested in
@AviD dunno I got the feeling there were quite a few devs (comparing to other sec. confs here)
we get about almost half security folk, almost half devs. and a few other assorted mix. Mostly very technical.
@AviD most packed out talk I saw was the one about DevOps security, so implementing sec. in a DevOps env.
@RoryAlsop true. Troy Hunt didnt need to say much at AppSecEU, his delivery was off the charts.
@AviD he does a v. good presentation
09:25
@RоryMcCune yeah, Matt gave a good talk.
I actually have a good one in mind, now to do the convincing...
09:51
this conversation is too close to being on topic to be acceptable in this room
please refrain from discussing security related matters in the security chat room
@kalina any suggested topics of conversation to replace it?
silence
@kalina so Doctor Who it is then
who?
@kalina precisely
09:56
actually if you don't mind, it's just The Doctor
doesn't 'even really matter who
who am I even talking to?
oh yes... you
I'm looking forward to this weeks episode
to see what happens to missy
hey @AviD have you caught up yet?
A wanna be specialist with no mustache
or will I still get kicked for spoilers?
talks the talk but doesn't smoke grass
@kalina I'll take "Non-sequiteurs for $100"
09:57
some other rhyme that goes with the last
@RоryMcCune was it just the episode 1? cuz that I've seen.
I'm bored of this now, something something past
also, that seen that you rories were on about - yes, quite awesome indeed.
@AviD yeah next one's not till saturday
still, no spoilers I think
09:58
@kalina past what?
....
@RоryMcCune nothing, I briefly got lyrical and then gave up
probably related to having enough
I love the characters she plays
I still want her to "release the squirrel" as Missy
@kalina that's a carrying handle
pls spread your legs so I can insert a massive metal clamp and pry you open
just another day visiting the doctor
10:01
Doctor who?
you could at least warm it up first
NO NOT THAT HOT FUCK
#bored
@RoryAlsop I dont think Missy has a squirrel, she is a woman this time
She was definitely a woman in Green Wing
@kalina I think you're doing it wrong
10:03
2 days ago, by kalina
@RоryMcCune you can't talk about DMZs here, that's off topic
apparently the migration of people is exactly like the infiltration of the western world by IS, according to nobody, ever
@kalina not even the Daily Fail or the Torygraph?
"Czech authorities were called to report three suspicious fellows with dark skin hanging around the town center"
turned out they were French
lol
"They were french" - that's suspecious already.
The Fear of the Different
10:13
wow, just saw a peregrine falcon at like 3 ft away
rare
did you poke it?
should have captured it, killed it, stuffed it and hung it on your wall as proof
no no, a peregrine falcon you capture, kill, and eat.
it was after the swarm of chaffinches we have at the moment on our feeders
don't think it got one this time
see? it's the natural food chain.
10:34
heehee, this statement:
> WordPress core, one of the most securely written web apps in the world
nevermind where I saw it, no need to shame.
but my feeling is: Obscurity is not Security.
@AviD wow have they seen the release history...
@AviD That's like saying "php is the best language to create desktop appications."
2
@Arperum like I said, obscurity helps.
@RоryMcCune inorite?
kinda/sorta makes sense in context, but still...
@Arperum what, you mean it isn't?
@AviD no, those are the same things
obscure is exactly the same as being secure, until it isn't
10:56
@AviD - not much eating on a peregrine
Apparently...
11:17
right, to the thing to do the stuff
@RoryAlsop yes but the extra flavour from knowing how rare it is...
ufat
@Arperum It's true.
@kalina pls
11:33
I can't believe you just had the audacity to ping me
I think you need to check yourself
before I wreck yourself
rekt
not really, my volume was way too loud and the ping sound was enabled, my hair is messed up from hitting the ceiling
pls I was talking about me getting rekt
random fucking boomyness in my kick makes sad panda
THERE IS NO OVERLAP STOP SOUNDING LIKE SHIT
@kalina can't you just tiwddle the boomyness knob down a little?
11:43
@kalina you're too short to hit the ceiling
OH SNAP YES I WENT THERE
@AviD OOOOOOOH SNOP
@RоryMcCune Yes, with this magical knob: waves.com/plugins/oneknob-phatter#oneknob-phatter-demo
hey at least she HAS a ceiling, not living in a teepee like you northern barbarians.
@Simon "Phatter is a bass booster that provides a quick way to add bottom, weight and body to bass, keys, kick drums and vocals alike, to thicken them in the mix"
wat
@RоryMcCune What didn't you understand in there?
@Simon Thickening a mix is something I thought was only done to cakes
11:47
lulz
also how do music producers get through their day with all the innuendo
"OneKnob Phatter"
it's like something straight out of a finbarr saunders comic
To be fair, I wouldn't use this plug-in.
It's a poor and mindless way to add low-end.
"OneKnob Wetter" oh come on, now they're obviously taking the mickey
The filter + pumper are pretty much the only two I find interesting.
OH YEAH HANG ON LET ME ENTER MY CREDIT CARD INFO
@RоryMcCune that will be the name of my next conference talk
actually, Dr. Dirk might take offense ;-)
11:52
@AviD heh
someone should do security research on that software
just for the potentially amusing conference talk titles
Do it!
@RоryMcCune I'd rather have a physical version to twist it when needed.
"Lady, you could use some more wetness"
It might also be the only legitimate way to meet @kalina through work :-)
hahaha like she'd ever let that happen....
@RoryAlsop yeah I can see my request for funds from our research budget "Dear management, I'd like some money to buy software to research, so I can make knob gags at security conferences with a straight face"
11:56
Phrasing is everything
You'll need a DAW too.
@RoryAlsop hey now no pinging @kalina when she's editing
Ah - yes, just saw that Simon had been bad
Sorry kalina
am soz am soz
@RoryAlsop you missed the @ of @kalina 's name there
;)
11:59
To be fair, if her volume was this loud, it wasn't good for her ears anyway.
So, you may call me your Savior.
Is that like saviour, @Simon #languagechallenged
pls
My Google Chrome spelling checker is British too because he underlines words like "color".
Silly spell checker.
Obviously it knows that color isn't a real word
12:02
pls, he only knows the alphabet.
And yes, apparently my Google Chrome is a "he".
Hahahaha
@ThomasPornin How's life at CGI in QC city?
@Simon My life is not at CGI; I just work there.
@ThomasPornin Good for you, some friends have been telling me how their experience there wasn't great.
You're not in the production department though I assume so it must be quite different.
@Simon have you been bear-stalking again?
12:07
@RоryMcCune I've had my weekly stalk last night, yes.
(I'm kidding)
I feel the need to mention it because I'm sure that you lads believe it.
@Simon I am not actually working on the premises. I am a mercenary, so I work at the customer's office.
@ThomasPornin Ah right, I think that you already told me that but I forgot cuz #me.
That looks fun though.
12:24
@Simon I would guess it depends on who the customer is and what their office env. is like
sometimes on-sites ain't too bad, other times they're horrible
He's French though so people must know to not mess with him.
My on-site at that small red bank was lovely. They made me breakfast every day
@AviD ...
@Simon nice, hide your problems rather than fix them
@Simon Waves don't support Windows 10 atm btw
39 mins ago, by Simon
It's a poor and mindless way to add low-end.
@RoryAlsop that is nice
@RoryAlsop BTW are W&G collocated with $large_bank. looks like I'm over for a meeting with them next week, so maybe in the vicinity for a coffee if you're about
12:30
@Simon my DAW output is quite a bit quieter than my Windows volume
"I fixed it with autotune anyway"
"Autotune all the things"
"This is me autotuning the sound of crying cats into a worldwide top 40 hit"
sorry, by crying cats I meant "your average American Idol/Voice/Pop Idol/America's Got Talent contestant"
it would probably be easier to actually do crying cats
Poor kitty cats.
my kick is no longer boomy and my bass is ridiculous and my percussion is bright
let's call this one finished and move onto the next
My patronus is a charizard
rawr
@RоryMcCune currently yes. Might even be on the Dane floor as me :-)
@RoryAlsop nice! well once I get confirmation of location I'll drop you a line.
12:42
target acquired
er... I mean
nevermind
pls they are not single
so?
pls
my experience is that not being single never stops a man
so #careface
besides, I was talking about for my charizard
but then I realized that "Scotland" is a suitable target anyway, why narrow it down to a tiny little location
Hahahaha
I assume charizard is a fire Pokémon?
12:45
so stop thinking with your penis, @Simon
@RoryAlsop yes
And your plan is to burninate the Rories...
:-(
I wanted to test your immortality
Oh, well in that case
pls my ween
otherwise I would have chosen Canada
12:46
O CANADUH
but then I thought
if I burn Canada, all that snow will melt, flood the rest of the world, and I live in the rest of the world, so that's bad
that's probably why nobody nukes them
back to the stuff to do the thing!
@Simon This is entirely true.
13:01
You can't just go mess with a French guy on a fine Thursday morning, you gotta be prepared for war.
If you arm yourself with tons of dogmas and sophisms, you should be able to defeat him though.
13:30
either that or surprise him into surrendering
I keep dropping my headphones on the ground, I'm surprised that they're still alive.
that's disgusting that you treat such hardware in such manner
unless they're in ear phones
in which case
that's disgusting you call them headphones
pls, ATH-M50.
and then put them in your ears.
pls, acting like a pair of audio technica headphones makes you the shit
pls, you claimed something and proved you wrong with the model.
13:44
barely proving anything wrong
they're pretty low down in the grand scheme of things
basically a consumer item
@Simon I believe that @kalina is suggesting that you're a filthy casual :op
Fisher Price myFirstNearlyAudiophileHeadphones
Naaaah, the filthy casual would purchase a pair of Beats.
at least they're not beats
aha
inb4'd me :/
rekt
I wonder what brand of high-end headphones I'd get, possibly Beyerdynamic.
13:47
I do own a pair of ATH-M50s and they have a reasonable sound to them but they're not as "professionally studio monitor" as AT want you to believe they are
bang for buck though they're good for the price
Yes. Anyway, I shouldn't be producing on headphones but that's all I can do for now.
Can't wait to own a house to purchase a pair of kick ass monitor.
@Simon akg k701s
Jesus, what an ugly design.
sorry, I meant Ultrasone Edition 8s
but I refuse to spend €1500 on headphones
so, akg k701s
14:43
@Simon The 701 is one of those classic headphones that are freaking awesome.
They are actually really comfortable.
@TerryChia Yes I can believe that but they look fugly anyway.
