My new microwave oven transformer.
Beer for scale because I didn't have a banana.
Also, @ScottPack I finally got a six pack of Not Your Father's Root Beer. It's delicious.
01:27
@DavidFreitag I'm glad you think so. It was too sweet for me.
@ScottPack That's because in my mind it's alcoholic root beer, not root beer flavored beer.
Oh sure.
Wife hated it, said it tasted like cough syrup. I just didn't prefer it.
I also prefer darker less sweet root beers anyway.
Interesting. I've never had root beer flavored cough syrup.
Well the alcohol plus Kayo flavor of Tussin. That's what it was like for her.
Someone hit a skunk right outside my apartment.
01:40
Sucks
No, the word you are looking for is "Stinks"
Meh.
My day has been worse so whatevs
That's unfortunate D:
It happens
Let's just say that I'm looking forward to going home, pouring a drink, and watching brainless television before I pass out.

Q: Ransom attacks - can I protect myself by encrypting all my files?

PixelStudioIf I encrypt all my files can I get "attacked" by ransom attacks? Because my files are already encrypted, they cannot access them, so I should be safe or am I wrong? Also, if someone could tell me how this encryption works, I would be really thankful. I already read some articles on Wikipe...

Why would anyone vote to close this as too broad? :OO

How very retro. And awesome.
Also, congrats. You used a $200 FPGA board to emulate a $5 chip. digilentinc.com/Products/…
well, NASA also used a billion dollars rover to play happy birthday on Mars with its sample analyzer
it can also do other things ... ;)
Looks like windows is stepping its IoT game up even more. ms-iot.github.io/content/en-US/GetStarted.htm
It's surprising that they don't have support for the Edison, though.

Hi there (too)
07:42
Morning All
Oh, apparently I need more sources
COVER BRIE MORTAL.
@Flyk you have 78 upvotes, sounds to me like your answer's fine :)
actually. I have 80 upvotes
so you do
07:56
but it's upsetting
because now that's my third highest voted answer ever
and one of the others was a MSE moderator election answer!
heh high voted answers are funny things
I'm obviously going to have to delete it soon to protect my #1 highest voted answer
moving games between steam libraries is important to you?
no but it's the only post I ever made that got 100 votes
except meta posts that complained about mods
which got 100 downvotes
most importantly, my account list now has another site I'm not qualified to use with more than 1k rep
along with ask ubuntu and super user
well that says something about the system, not sure what exactly...
08:03
well AU was all edits
(nearly)
and super user was posts migrated from here
because you actively tried to defend yourself or something
@RоryMcCune I posted one of my top answers high to the gills with the flu and flu meds.
proper flu or just a cold?
proper flu
If its a normal cold, I manage
MOST flus don't knock me on my ass.
well proper flu is acceptable, people complaining about colds are weak
and calling a cold a flu is just -.-
"omg I have the flu... right, I'm off skiing"
no you're not, you're struggling to stand and all of the aches and pains are really wearing on your patience
08:08
Oh, I have sinus infections (which are annoying), little colds , minor flus...
Most of these I don't even bother with medicine.
I have the symptoms of ac old pretty much whenever I'm not at home
not physically within the boundaries of the house -.-
yeah I only get colds and the like when I travel
some people get home sick
I miss my my own bed
I'm bedsick
advantage of living in a small village and avoiding people ..
@Flyk how long before you get to go back to your home/bed?
heh. I miss my keyboard ;p
08:12
@RоryMcCune early next week
@Flyk not too long to go then, one more round of weekend "duff duff duff, NTZ NTZ NTZ" !
actually this weekend is pretty quiet
I am doing something on one of the days but I'm mainly here for the purpose of making not playing
in all honesty I should have capitalized on my presence here a little more but I was properly demotivated when it was all arranged and figured I could do with time off
breaks are a good thing(tm)
yeah but now instead of earning money I'm going to be sat on chat
no offense intended
I'm having a stay-cation in September, which is either going to be a lot of hill walking (if the weather's good) or Win 10 Universal app creation (if the weather's bad)
08:15
I'm just usually pretty good at balancing everything
@Flyk none taken :op most chat rooms rank below actually earning a living!
maybe now that I work for myself
when I was employed that certainly wasn't the case
08:30
people complaining about software gathering information when it's mentioned that the software will gather information and you chose to ignore it
facepalm
Stack Exchange chat search is all weird recently
could somebody explain to me what this guy wants from me?
@Flyk what guy?
@Flyk: You seem to be repeating the point in my comment rather than addressing it... — Mehrdad 5 mins ago
08:46
@Flyk I think he wants you to put that statement that all software requires allowing a level of access in your answer..
I don't know why he wants that mind
Does he want me to teach people how to read English as well, so they can read my post?
I assumed a certain level of competence, I assumed that people who installed software knew they were accepting to something even if they didn't read it
this is so confusing
Managed to get one of my comments deleted on SO, possibly because I called null terminated C strings idiotic. :)
society requires that I am nice to people but people requiring that much guidance must be idiots
@Flyk I can see where you went wrong there... assuming competence of Internet users.
@RоryMcCune if I don't assume that people have a base level of competence I'll just get called condescending for assuming nobody has a base level of competence and then when I try to defend my actions people will assume I'm some kind of vile soulless creature scared of the light
I mean I'm not fond of the light
08:50
@Flyk yeah tricky to pull off
yet when I assume a base level of competence, people don't understand or require clarification
or think I'm being awkward
Which answer is this?
"Life"
maybe I could re-calibrate my efforts further and make myself look even more technically incompetent and thus less of a threat
@Flyk or just ignore the haters :)
if I ignored the haters, 99% of everybody would be on ignore
08:57
@Flyk heh well at least the world would be a quieter place
I just read the wikipedia article for the TV show I recently started watching (which is old and already cancelled) and now I'm not going to watch it anymore
A wild @Rory appears
Morning
@M'vy all rories are wild, didn't you know?
I'd class myself as not very wild this morning. More like mild
09:00
they act peaceful but if you feed them after midnight they'll just keep eating
dogs, cats, people
If it's caik then I'll just keep eating it
very dangerous creatures
never turn your back on a rory
09:01
A mild @Rory appears then
oh no, another rory
they're multiplying
quick, nuke them from orbit
Too late @Flyk - you turned your back...
Vulnerable position!
I backed out of the room facing forwards
I stood in the doorway.
09:04
you're a mere mortal man, no such being would stand in my way
Rories are formidable but they're rarely immortal and certainly no match for the Darkness.
We have no fear of the dark
So far, Rory mortality has not been tested
And as newest Rory says, we have no fear of the dark: I'm an Iron Maiden fan!
@MartinRoryIngesen that simply means that you haven't experienced it yet
Iron Maiden isn't dark
Killing a shopping mall full of people and arranging the bodies so it looks like they all spontaneously committed suicide
that's dark
now that I have concluded what I aim to achieve today, I just need to work out how to do it
I suspect the delivery of some kind of gas that makes people go crazy
Live now from channel 4, @Flyk admits to the horrific mass murder conducted at a shopping mall thursday.
It wasn't me, I played them some iron maiden and they all reacted in an unpredictable manner
09:12
Well, there's no prayer for the dying
praying is for crazy people anyway
Hop aboard the crazy train!
This is the place for crazy people, I'm not crazy
The question is, can I play with madness?
Me, a man on the edge.
Out of the silent planet.
Funny, the Iron Maiden discography almost reads like a book.
@Flyk People are crazy enough without gassing them.
09:17
@CodesInChaos I was only going to use nitrous oxide, stop making out I'm some kind of genocidal maniac!
3
09:35
oh noes, the internets went down
the entire thing.
09:56
@LucasKauffman now I want to watch it crowd again
We have a box of those ._.
ok, important question
is it "The I.T. Crowd" or "The it crowd"?
@Flyk the former
...
@RоryMcCune nooo it can't be because that would mean I'm wrong and that kind of paradox would end the universe!!111
10:00
@Flyk ahh well, it's had a good run, all things considered.
does anybody else think that the american version would have been good
@MartinRoryIngesen - I was wondering how many sing titles you would come up with
@Flyk no :-)
what about the german version?
10:06
British humour dosen't translate to american
British humor doesn't translate
Actually, british shows don't at all
what about the office?
that was more successful in america no?
what about harry potter
maybe
the latter was not a TV show
but it was british
10:09
I said shows ;p
and humour, implicitly meaning shows ;p
why, are movies not capable of containing humor?
No, but they may or may not translate well
I can't think of any other tv shows
I primarily watch canadian sci fi
@Flyk does that involve @sim 's doughnuts being taken away by aliens
@RоryMcCune no it's like stargate and andromeda and sanctuary and continuum
or american procedural stuff like ncis
10:12
@Flyk: Most of the good shows now are at least partially canadian
Tax reasons
and lost girl
because tv needs more attractive succubi
everything algorithm contains art
o
that should be "every"
sometimes I wonder how I don't fall over more frequently
@Flyk you mean you've not come up with an "everything algorithm"
aww I'm disappointed
I don't do algorithms
I leave that for you guys
I lack the intelligence to do such a thing, I draw the line at writing an application to manage all of my samples and make them easily available and searchable, pinned to the top of my screen
11:01
hey @Flyk another question for our resident windows 10 expert security.stackexchange.com/questions/96831/…
hardly an expert
also I'm already rep capped, would be a waste
@Flyk ahh the ennui of the rep-cap

I think this guy is attempting to flood a server with HTTP Requests
@raz muppet, fortunately he seems to be an incompetent muppet
DoS via ToR is unlikely to work well for him
he should go and try to persuade some skiddies to LOIC it :)

Q: Why do browsers have no built-in features to verify the integrity of downloads?

SpaceTruckerI just started a download of a large file. Checksums were placed prominently on the download page. But I just realized that I actually never made use of any of the checksums provided for download integrity verification. What are the reasons browsers do not provide such a feature from a security ...

Why so many downvotes? it seems like a perfectly reasonable question.
there, you happy?
I have posted an answer
in other news, I'm likely to get a third gold badge for a +100 voted answer shortly
raz
raz
@Flyk It rep trained that hardcore?
Damn, well done
@raz it's at +92-2
raz

Watch those last 8, they're a doozie!
totally
it will trickle there eventually
raz
raz
11:20
My 2 rep trains stopped mid 60's, haven't made it to the hunsky yet
my only 100 is a super silly and (I think) completely out of date post on gaming
I nearly got another 100 with a copy/paste response on MSE, but that will never make it there now because it's a moderator election question post so that's out of date as well
raz
raz
Cool story...
how often do men think about sex?
@Flyk are there times we don't? ;-P
11:24
it has to be at least once every 10 minutes
@Flyk s/10/1
raz
raz
At work probably less often, at a bar... eh maybe a lot more
I think about sex every time I see a cute guy and within the dying 45 minutes of getting into bed or waking up (assuming I'm still in bed)
@raz what if you work in a bar
11:25
so that's probably once every 3 hours
raz
raz
@RoryAlsop I think every 7 seconds is probably accurate
it really depends if @sim is here tbh
in his presence it is repulsed up to "never"

@Flyk even more than setting fire to stuff?
raz
raz
@RоryMcCune Well that's easier than sex properly
11:45
@Simon you've got to do this on all your git commit messages from now on... blog.annharter.com/2015/08/12/blinking-commits.html
@raz For a rep train to reach +100, it usually needs to achieve +60 in the first 24 hours.
Of course, any answer can still get to +100 in the long run, but then it no longer is a rep train.
raz
raz
@ThomasPornin Yeah mine didn't quite go that quickly. I think it stopped mid 60's after 48
I have an absolute non-reptrain answer that is up to +453 currently, and I posted it more than two years after the initial question.

@ThomasPornin pats Thomas on the back
I'm on the fence about this question

Q: Twitter phone verification while on Tor (update)

Twitter for DummiesTwitter locked me out of my account. I can log in but I can't do anything with it until I give them a phone number. I've had the account for years but they've decided now there's "suspicious activity" with it. I've tried many of the free online receive SMS services but Twitter has them all blo...

12:05
@raz I take it you're not in need of that hand any more .. :op
12:16
@ThomasPornin - about your answer to security.stackexchange.com/questions/96741/…
@gowenfawr yes ?
Could you pull your comment text up into the answer, and I'll accept it? You kind of nailed the dilemma I was trying to get at with this text: "As long as /dev/urandom is secure, this is harmless (and useless, except if you want to transparently support applications that insist on using /dev/random, and stalling at inopportune times, for no good reason)."
I can do an edit...
Perfect.
12:33
Excellent, thank you, upvoted and accepted.
@RоryMcCune Amazing!
I'm sorry, I fed the trolls
one day I'll stop doing that
@Simon I know right. imagine all your commits done on a Friday starting with a blinking #YOLO
@RоryMcCune Or on a Friday night using a VPN with a blinking #drunkyolo
@Simon ooh that'll do. I feel the need to write some code tonight, just so I can use that
12:37
@Flyk The fact that you can now review first posts doesn't mean that you have to.
ALRIGHT?
(I'm 27 away from the badge)
@Simon understood

@Simon so if you didn't want @Flyk to "help out" with the queue, you realise this statement was a bad plan, right?

also I've gained more rep than you this year

@Simon refreshes /review
At least I turned you into someone productive.
HA
omg
you have no idea
thanks for making me cry with laughter, I've caught my breath now
let's go for round two
@Flyk TWSS - quite literally
how redundant
refreshes /review OH MY GOD THERE'S SOMETHING TO REVIEW
@Flyk deliberately so :-)
13:14
@Flyk That was a lie.
@Simon or perhaps you're just too slow, now there's a new gun in town
No, no. Her name would be at the top of the review queue but it's the bear wanna-be idiot instead.
Wait no, it's me.
FML.
only when the system works
you should blame caching
the solution is to create 20 new accounts and post shite with them
so they all appear in the queue
pls, you're at 1 review for today and you had that when I checked earlier this morning.
and then winner
13:21
I don't think there's caching for review counts.
poor simon
once upon a time he was a tiny fish in a vast pond who hung out with the big fish
and now he's a tiny fish in a vast pond who is sharing hanging out with the big fish with another fish that glows in the dark
once upon a time there was a flyk lying
which is a major win
her nose grew bigger and bigger every day
since water is so dark
my nose isn't big
that's so very rude
I can't believe you'd just attack me like that
I am extremely upset and may cry
13:24
blablabla

@Simon feeling cold are we?
that's just the last of his humanity escaping from the monster he has become
bluhbluhbluh
@Simon you're getting as bad as @Adi now...

worse, @Adi is actually alright
@Simon he wandered into the room earlier, spouted some random nonsense and dropped off.

maybe you should refresh the review queue
13:34
Damn it.
In exchange for payment, I will instead monitor the review queue and inform you of new things to review
Or I could set a script on a cronjob to do that for me.
raz

@Simon A PHP script no doubt.
I doubt you'd ever get that to work
@raz No damn doubt at all.

it's certainly not as efficient as my method
the cost? 3 lots of 500 rep awarded as bounties
step right up and take advantage of this generous offer

I think I'll decline...

oh no that was a @Simon specific option anyway
for everybody else it would be free of charge
but the offer isn't open
