ooo There's been a retraction.
Only 10 candidates after all, looks like there won't be primaries.
@MartinRoryIngesen, I respect that.
Some of our other joke nominations should also follow suit.
Unless this is just about getting tshirts. I respect that too.
01:08
I like to think that the winners get a T-shirt, the losers become moderators.
heh. I feel like I should get another shirt as consolation prize.
I'll bet it Aarthi was still there we could get her to put a bottle of Scotch in the mod care package.
@ScottPack or a chocolate unicorn.
01:22
Better be good chocolate. Not that bullshit they make bunnies out of.
bunnies are made out of chocolate?
Didn't you know?
no, I thought it was just their eggs.
oh btw I made a rookie mistake, and picked a twitter fight... well it was right after our SQRL party on friday, so....
@swiftonsecurity IMO all the services should implement SQRL https://www.grc.com/sqrl/sqrl.htm that's the real solution to auth problems
feel free to jump in, let's make it really messy

2 hours later…

2 hours later…
07:15
hi there
07:27
morning @M'vy
So today is said to be "cooler". Only 30-33 degrees........
07:40
@TerryChia heh I saw some of those out of context. definitely better this way.
hm so we're 10 once again
7 hours ago, by AviD
Only 10 candidates after all, looks like there won't be primaries.
Yeah, did not backlog :)
12 hours till elections, now is the time for all jokminations to withdraw.
nice word
Can I use that at scrabble ?
07:50
@AviD you know what would happen if this was like a TV soap. We'd get down to 5 minutes before nominations and @kalina would suddenly appear as a nominee..
@RоryMcCune oh please let that happen... :-)
@RоryMcCune and shoot everybody in the head.
and burn the DMZ to the ground
@RoryAlsop you should modping her.
@AviD is that 'cause you're scared to?
07:51
@AviD I'm not sure she still exists here
@RоryMcCune and, as she walks away nonchalantly with explosions in the background, you see the election ticker with her getting 98% of the vote.
but hey - I'm happy to try that. I'll just say that @AviD missed her, right?
;-)
Then shooting the 2% again.
@RoryAlsop sounds like a plan
07:52
@RoryAlsop heh.
looks like she's still about, just keeping a low profile... movies.stackexchange.com/users/5603/flyk has last seen date July 9th
Ah ah :)
maybe we'd need an indiana jones incantation
08:11
hehe I just got accused of misogyny BECAUSE I have female examples.
@AviD lol
@AviD eh?!
Great answer, thank! A side question. Why "she"? You don't like girls and that's why you claim, that most hackers are women or is this some kind of English form, that I don't know (I'm not a native English speaker)? :> — trejder 8 mins ago
08:39
I AM FREAKING OUT
MY TEENAGE GIRL IS GOING IN THE ARMY
SHE ALSO JUST CALLED ME A TEENAGE GIRL
Huh?
@AviD That sounds normal where you live
@AviD that....less so :-)
(ya big girl)
's blouse
@RoryAlsop yeah, but not NOW
@AviD How active is service at that age? Not that any service is zero risk, but presumably there are degrees of involvement?
08:49
@RoryAlsop many degrees, yes. In fact she likely would not be able to be "kravi" (hebrew for fighter), even if she wanted to, because of health issues
IF she goes into actual army (and not alternative service) she would likely be either office-style army or brains-style army.
but this is not about fearing for her life, this is about ME GETTING OLD
@AviD pffffft..... Getting.......
heh, see
@AviD she could be in the Cyber-Army!
@RоryMcCune could be
unlikely though, she tried that once and burnt out fast.
Still, was a few years ago, might try again.
I've heard it sometimes requires... upgrades...
08:57
hey @TerryChia @RoryAlsop my twitter troll claims that SQRL was substantially updated since that blogpost. seen the changes? any thoughts?
@RоryMcCune hehehe missed that derp
@AviD FWIW to me, a blog post is relevant to the time it was posted, and if the protocol / implemenation changes later, that is not a reason to remove or change it
@RоryMcCune oh absolutely. not about removing the post... I picked a twitter fight about SQRL quite coincidentally.
also that dude on the DMZ the other day was straight up trolling, said he'd never heard of Gibson
@RоryMcCune true
However if it changes enough, could be another blog post
@RоryMcCune it might be worth (If @TerryChia can be bothered) posting an update. If it is good now, that would be nice to see....
09:00
@RоryMcCune nah its possible. its the cognitive dissonance to think that scheme is secure, or that one could have a worthwhile opinion about security with no background or experience in security.
@M'vy sure that's valid and would make sense
Do they have a changelog or so?
Or is it just a kindof whitepaper thing?
@AviD dunno the errata link to info. on gibson was literally the first line of Terrys answer to the original question, how can you have analyzed the thing enough to write that big spiel and not clicked the link
@RоryMcCune ignoring names
also, scanning not reading in depth
@AviD he went to a lot of bother to refute the blog post, so whilst it's not impossible that he didn't actually read the original QA and follow the links, I would not take an even odds bet on that subject
09:03
@RоryMcCune you're discounting the effects of cognitive dissonance.
which should be the base assumption for anybody supporting SQRL or Gibson.
Or Trump, for that matter.
2 days ago, by AviD
Listening to any ideas Gibson has on security is akin to asking Donald Trump for suggestions on unemployment.
09:15
@AviD Is there a link to the updated spec somewhere? I'll see if i have the time...
@TerryChia I assume this is the most updated: grc.com/sqrl/sqrl.htm
I honestly dont remember what it was before, and dont have time to look at it in depth today.
@AviD Hmm, I'll take a look...
09:56
I just had a quick look at the SQRL stuff... the spec's not finished (To me) and questions like "what happens if I lose my smartphone" aren't addressed. the FAQ page is "under definition and construction" grc.com/sqrl/faq.htm
if after 2 years they can't sort out a FAQ....
@RоryMcCune That was one of my concern reading the main page
Seems like you can backup your password as a QR-Code offline
but that does not address corruption of your master key
yeah one of my concerns with putting everything on a smartphone is loss/corruption of the device. what if you brick your phone!
presumably they're not backing up the master key to something like a PC as then it would be a prime candidate for attack
@RоryMcCune well, if you have a QR-Code as backup it solves the problem.
@M'vy so does that backup the key and the password protecting the key?
I think I've read the QR-code is a backup of the master password
see the "Easily scram and recover: " section on overview page
10:02
@RоryMcCune I think they suggest having a password as a backup (....)
or actually, a registered email address
also the spec, in a number of places, makes assumptions about the implemented clients and uses this as a reason why the solution is secure. This is to me, not a thing a spec. should do
yeah - and the cognitive dissonance means that if you respond to that, they will just say "you're just talking about an implementation, not the spec!"
gawd I hate writing samples of bad code
it's like bending backwards, the wrong way
@AviD the fracking spec. either on gibsons site or sqrlauth.net just isn't complete, there's no detailed implementation requirements (that I can find)
also, the biggest problem is that I can't help but be reminded of Squirrel Girl.
for those not familiar, she is considered the most powerful superhero in the marvel universe, never been defeated and having to stifle a yawn while crushing Dr. Doom.
Squirrel Girl (Doreen Green) is a fictional mutant superheroine that appears in the Marvel Comics Universe. Her first appearance was in Marvel Super-Heroes vol. 2, #8, a.k.a. Marvel Super-Heroes Winter Special (cover-dated Jan. 1992), in a story plotted and drawn by Steve Ditko and scripted by character conceptualizer Will Murray. Her ability to communicate with squirrels is surprisingly effective and has allowed her to defeat major supervillains. She was a member of the Great Lakes Avengers for much of the duration of that group, and later began serving as nanny to Danielle Cage, the daughter...
10:24
The bears are cool ;p
10:52
wait who canceled their nomination? weren't there 11 candidates before?
@TildalWave it was Rory I think
Martin Rory?
@TildalWave yeah norwegian Rory
that's ambiguous, @RoryA might have been to Norway when Slartibartfast designed those fjords for all we know
would explain why there's some in Scotland too
@TildalWave what you mean is, those fjords are a result of @Rory visiting Norway after he had too many beers.
11:00
and the world got flooded and the sea's salty cause he took a leak?
And, since "too many beers" for @Rory must mean Hell hath frozen over, that explains why Norway is a frozen wasteland.
none of you read the hitchhikers?
@TildalWave well yes whilst the elder rory will have undoubtedly visited Norway, he's not from Norway
which I would use as the pre-requisite for being Norwegian
that downgraded my Scotch egg to just another egg :(
@TildalWave fjords are pretty
@RоryMcCune Been to Bergen a few times, it's lovely. I'm still not Norwegian though
11:12
@RoryAlsop speaking of things scandanavian, my Shetland Reel Gin turned up today :) so will have to see what it's like tonight..
raz
raz
@TildalWave I've read it
@RоryMcCune It's not a pre-req for being Norwegian, it's a pre-req for being normal.
@RоryMcCune Excellent - Also this weekend, we tested our 1st year sample of our whisky. It is awesome already - a lightly peaty finish, still a wee hint of the light spirit that will go as angel's share but very drinkable!
@RoryAlsop \o/ nice!
@TildalWave of course! I have copies signed by DA himself!
raz
raz
@RoryAlsop Nice! When do we see it in the States?
11:22
@raz well - we are going to sample every year up until year 5 (as that is the first year it can first be called whisky)
and then we'll decide how many bottles to decant each year
:-)
extensive testing...
raz
raz
But I want one
Alsop family distilling?
raz
raz
You'd think with how old @RoryAlsop is he'd have like millenia old whisky
@ScottPack yes - well, we went to Strathearn Distillery and did the entire thing. Great new distillery - run by an ex Sun Microsystems sysadmin
You have to not drink it for that to happen.
@RoryAlsop OK. That's pretty neato. How big a batch?
11:24
We designed how much peat in the cask, how charred, what wood, what drink had been in there previously etc
@ScottPack we will each end up with 75 bottles :-)
wheeeeeeeeee
Not bad.
raz
raz
That's pretty awesome
I'm gonna be brewing my first all-grain batch of beer this Saturday, should be exciting
@RoryAlsop I would have loved that
ALL THE PEAT
ALL THE CHARRED
PREVIOUSLY HELD BBQ SAUCE
@AviD Heh - well, another group of mates have gone with different options, so ours is American Oak, previously bourbon, peaty, charred. They are going with French Oak, port, no peat, no charring
The hope is that we can also make some blends
@AviD hahahahaha
@raz all grain beer? Hmmmmm
11:41
All grain beer as opposed to....?
Medium to high smoke, no peat, previously held sherry.
@ScottPack mmmmm
I think I just described La Santa.
@ScottPack Los Angeles has it's own bearded dude distributing presents from a time-travelling sleigh?
raz
raz
@RoryAlsop Yeah my buddy has a 10 gallon all grain system. We're gonna split a batch.
12:03
Whoops, just Lasanta. It's a Glenmorangie label.
@ScottPack hmm I admit I'm not sure which I prefer - the peat or the smoke.
my favorite whiskys are both, but if I had to choose? dunno.
raz
raz
@ScottPack Glenmorangie makes solid stuff, I definitely like more peaty flavors in my single malt though.
charred casks do make amazing things.
e.g. changes Talisker from just a really nice whisky to something quite sublime.
@AviD Also 'tested' the Singleton Spey Cascade
mmmmmmm
on the other hand, my favorite is Laphroige, which has some smokey, but the flavors are more peaty.
@RoryAlsop dont you know Singletons are evil ;-)
raz
raz
12:12
@RoryAlsop We can't get Singleton in the States anymore :(
After both of those, the Bruichladdich was very thin and weedy
@RoryAlsop I need to look for that. Smokey, I take it?
I like smokey but not peaty. I don't much enjoy the taste of soil.
@AviD aye - a wee bit:-) thesingleton.com
Which is why I like Lasanta. Very mild smoke (could use a bit more), no peat, great sweet undertones from the sherry.
raz
raz
12:14
@ScottPack peat = smoke...
@raz not exactly.
Big ole negative.
raz
raz
I guess there are other ways to introduce a smokey type flavor.
e.g. Talisker Dark Storm - not much peat, but the charred casks make it very very smokey.
@raz Higland Park - little bit peaty, not at all smoky
raz
raz
12:15
Gotcha
Smoke == smoke. Peat == burned swamp dirt.
@RoryAlsop why is that a video of foods? now I'm hungry.
raz
raz
lol
@ScottPack hahaha not dirt. mold.
raz
raz
Lagavulin is my new favorite single malt
12:16
@ScottPack have you tried the Talisker Dark Storm? sounds like youd like it.
@raz very nice. one of my favorites.
You could easily boil the mash over an open applewood fire and get lots of smoke with zero peat.
I still have a tiny bit of my double cask Lagavulin (16yr I think?) left. Saving it for special occassion.
@AviD I haven't. Because of my dislike of peat I tend not to but scotches. I wait until someone offers me something that I can ask about.
@ScottPack try it. Like I said, not a lot of peat, its the charred casks that are the focus.
raz
raz
@ScottPack Ok so before the 1960's I was right, peat = smoke. But now they're able to create malted grain with smokey attributes that peat isn't necessary.
@AviD Is that the distiller's edition?
12:19
@raz dont think so
I actually picked that up very near to Scotland (Newcastle)
raz
raz
@AviD I've had the distiller's edition... and that was smooooooooooth
@raz yeeaaahh babay
@raz It also depends on the location. Different regions had very different levels of peat. It's pretty trivial to make a non peat scotch after all. You just burn something else.
lagavulin isnt just smooth, it is incredibly flavorful, but not in-your-face so.
I feel like it's a more grown-up, dignified version of Laphroaig.
I'll keep an eye out.
Laphroaig is like a charred baseball bat to the face.
12:23
@ScottPack ooo I like that
but laphroaig is more peaty than smokey
a little of that too
@ScottPack that's what Kalina would say :)
but its the peat that gives it the intense layers of flavor
What am I thinking of that's basically like drinkig a campfire?
@ScottPack my missus suggested that laphroig was like a combination of mouthwash and ashtray
safe to say she wasn't a fan
12:35
@RоryMcCune oh I had tea like that once
I think she's thinking of Lapsang Souchong
I was very disappointed with that. Excited expectations, led to feeling like chewing a used cigarette butt.
@ScottPack dunno, but proper peat is like drinking a bbq.
or a really fine cigar, though I wouldnt know about that.
I haven't has a good cigar since the 90s
@ScottPack Highland Park smokes the malt over peat fires, germinating in smoke. Mmmmmmm
@ScottPack s/since the 90s/.
FTFY
@RoryAlsop I didnt find HP to be overly smokey OR peaty.
I usually offer Highland Park to my guests that prefer less smokey
@AviD exactly - that's why I consider it to be a great entrance level whisky
my offer is usually "very smokey or extra smokey?"
12:43
rather than scaring someone with a Laphroioioioioiag
@RoryAlsop yeah, exactly.
actually now I do have a couple bottles of very nice non-smokey, that I got as gifts
but I keep them in the back of my whisky cabinet
@ScottPack Is peat used for its smoke tho? I thought it's used because it burns slowly at a fairly constant temperature.
oo very nice. @RоryMcCune sponsorships for AppSecIL are starting to shape up nicely - and months in advance, instead of the week before.
hey now, does NCC not want to expand its brand in Israel? ;-)
you know, peat fires can last for months
@TildalWave depends on the whisky
12:46
@TildalWave so can Scotsmen.
@RoryAlsop how much of that have you been drinking??!!?
@AviD heh - today...none. Saturday, however.... many, many fine whiskies
@RoryAlsop I actually had to google what shisky is :))
lol
@TildalWave heh - is it a thing?
yes, a typo of whisky
12:49
@RoryAlsop DOKTOR MAYHEM - DESTROYER OF MANY FINE WHISKIES
@TildalWave In some distilleries they use peat for the heat but let the smoke fill the higher chamber as well, precisely for the taste.
@AviD never destroyed. Just...converted...internally
@AviD heh, ya know I don't know if we do anything in Israel, will check and see..
@ThomasPornin Ah cool, didn't know that... thanks!
@ThomasPornin Highland Park being one of these
12:49
Initially, peat was used because it is cheap -- you literally find it on the floor in bog areas.
@RоryMcCune oh hey, its about time they pay for flying you out to Israel!
It's lovely working in the malt room, turning the malt on the mesh above the peat fire - smoky and lovely
Then someone found out, probably by mistake, that the smoke could also do things to the taste that, after two or three glasses, can be deemed "good".
@ThomasPornin still see people cutting peat to use in various areas, definitely saw it last time I was in Shetland
@ThomasPornin I live in one of those areas ;)
12:50
@RоryMcCune I saw an industrial peat harvest a few weeks ago.
@ThomasPornin its also the place to find cranberries.
Peat is now used mostly for agriculture (it is a good substrate for conditioning fertilizers).
@RоryMcCune that was 80% of my job when I worked for Highland Park
Great job
If it's raining, you can't do it because the peat gets ruined
If it's too sunny, the same applies
So a lot of the time you sit around and play cards :-)
Imagine that the first guy who invented beer was basically someone who stumbled on some cereals that had been left in water and then fermented, and that guy still found it a good idea to try to drink it.
@AviD in highlands / woodlands yes but I never saw any growing here even tho it's plenty of peat ... not too far to where they grow tho
oh wait I'm thinking of lingonberries
12:58
@ThomasPornin there's no shortage of such people on Earth :)
Mmm...lingonberries...
@M'vy and these days they get high views on YouTube
@ScottPack never seen one of these
@RoryAlsop indeed :)
@RoryAlsop For shame!
Don't think they grow here
12:59
They're kind of like cranberries but less pith.
@AviD I was looking at code review tools and I thought of you. The Phabricator guys have a strange sense of humor.
> Most patches make it better.
Only some break it.
Written in PHP so literally anyone can contribute, even if they have no idea how to program.
Even babies and dogs can contribute.
Guigui thinks about ovid, aaaawwwww.
@Simon I see you're continuing the strong showing in the election run-up :op
@RоryMcCune I predict that Simon will not be eliminated in the primary
@RоryMcCune I'm making pins for my campaign, I dunno if they'll be ready on time. They say: "PHP is love, PHP is life. Vote for Simon".
@Gilles You guys could get me kicked out quite easily though.
13:04
@ThomasPornin similar to the origin of drinking milk.
@Simon I'm not running in an election where I wouldn't vote for me
@Gilles I think we're going straight to election as we're back down to 10 candidates..
@RоryMcCune you need to retune your sarcasm detector
@RоryMcCune Who bailed out, by the way ? I don't remember.
@ThomasPornin fake Rory
13:06
I thought it was @schroeder
Ah yes.
Well, @Adi still has a few hours to join the circus.
raz
raz
@AviD Exactly!
@Gilles that's sweet
I like the "PHP... even if no idea to program"
I would say "especially"
@Gilles I wasn't commenting on simon just that we weren't having a primary :op
so, interestingly, I answered a question today and DIDN'T repcap.
This is... odd.
raz
raz
13:13
I guess your answer sucked then
relatively speaking, I guess so.
@AviD showoff :-)
heh. Hey cmon, I dont do this writing bit often
@TildalWave - sorry about that. Just not going to go down that religious fault route
@RoryAlsop yeah me neither
I'm not an ostrich
13:17
@Gilles Even if the said election would award you a t-shirt?!?
@TildalWave I'll pop back in there later on
@Simon while the t-shirts are very nice (obviously), I don't think that's a good reason to stand
Blasphemy!
@Simon surely you'd want SE branded doughnuts too :-)
OH
EMM
GEEEEE
I MUST HAVE THE SE BRANDED DONUTS
@AviD lol
13:21
SEC.SE BRANDED DONUTS
DONUT INJECTION
Sec.SE doughnuts
OM NOM NOM
@Simon you have to go to that tim hortons donut designing page and design us a Sec.SE donut. Call it "Donut Injection". Or maybe "Donut Overflow".
The filling will taste like regret and poor career choices.
wat
actually I think the logo should be pretty easy to implement as frosting.

I'm actually a bit tempted to apply. I wouldn't expect to be selected, but I'd be interested to know more about the process.
raz
raz
@TildalWave No, pushing the new profile out to everyone should be the top of the damn list!
@raz no no, donuts is before that.
@TildalWave heh cool, they onebox careers now?
@AviD surely looks like they do
@TildalWave you'd have a big problem with this:
> A track record of coming up with great ideas and getting them done
-> i.e. specifically on Meta.SE / Meta.SO.
13:46
@AviD I don't on MSO / MSE (I mean I had really, really great ideas but they were really, really not into them LOL). But it wouldn't be that far off from what I do anyway.
@AviD We need a donuts site.
@TildalWave but exactly.
@TerryChia no, site donuts.
And I'm already managing one product for SE. At least one, not counting @Simon's ... oh wait, we said no @Simon-isms during the election
Patisserie Stack Exchange
@raz have you looked at the feature-request tag on meta?
@TildalWave Pat.SE - yup, it passes my 'trips off the tongue' test
raz
raz
@RoryAlsop I have not
13:49
@RoryAlsop hehehe
raz
raz
@AviD I'm literally eating a donut right now, so I don't care. I want the damn profile!
@raz you mean "figuratively"
@raz What profile? We're full-frontal here! :P
only 16k tagged feature-request but not tagged status-completed. And 15k without status-declined
13:50
@AviD No backlogging for me. Who dropped? How/why?
@Iszi Norwegian Rory. Because he knew his nomination was always intended as a joke.
unlike most of the other candidates...
@Adi is pretty funny
I could go for a tasty tasty donut.
and bad, obviously
Of course this could be the best advertising ever - I didn't even realise their service was even a service

everybody going to check if they've been exposed.
