Simon Le Bon? Is that me?
no
@kalina Are you the typical type of bitch girl who's always mad and has a shitty mad expression on her face all the time?
15:06
no
I'm one of those people who is happy 99% of the time and just has bad moments
just like everybody else
unfortunately, text on the internet strips out such niceties as facial expression, body language, tone of voice, sarcasm, dead pan delivery, etc

I'm actually joking a lot more than I'm being nasty
I have upheld that I am misunderstood for the entire time I've been on SE
less so here

A: How to securely hash passwords?

Thomas PorninThe Theory We need to hash passwords as a second line of defence. A server which can authenticate users necessarily contains, somewhere in its entrails, some data which can be used to validate a password. A very simple system would just store the passwords themselves, and validation would be a s...

@Xander Thank you.
@Arperum And a single SHA-512 iteration is bad due to this point called out in that answer: "it is way too fast, and gets faster with technological advances. With a recent GPU (i.e. off-the-shelf consumer product which everybody can buy), hashing rate is counted in billions of passwords per second."
@kalina my life struggle
@Xander this post is really good, I can understand nearly all of it
@kalina It is indeed one of the best answers on the site...But I also have a feeling you understand more here than you generally let on.
15:29
@Xander NO ONE EVER SAID THAT ABOUT ME
THIS IS UNFAIR
@Xander yeah?
what makes you think such a thing
oh I see, that's interesting
@Simon Because you're a PHP programmer. We can help but associate that with any level of achievement beyond eating art paste. And even that's a stretch goal. :-P
3
I just wrote a ton of php and I did feel a bit stupider after
does the word "stupider" cause an involuntary negative reaction in anybody else?
self-referential humor \o/
15:41
@kalina I'm pretty sure it involuntarily makes anyone who reads/hears it instantly stupider.
you say that, but it's actually a word
I looked it up before hitting enter on my original statement
English Language & Usage says it's legit
hard disk failure :-( :-( :-(
@AviD Ugh. :-( Not fun.
it seems that I am not quit as backed up as I should be.
Information security professional doesn't backup
read all about it
15:46
its like I said - if you didnt restore from your backups, you didnt do a proper backup.
and a proper restore is a restore from bare metal.
install machine
install all software
@kalina does back up, but not enough.
IMAGE machine
restore from image
use machine
all data (up to delta of current work) is backed up online
but would take me days to get all my dozen machines back to proper state.
everything of importance is backed up depending on *how* important it is
15:47
@kalina exactly.
I didnt give enough thought to time and pain of getting set up all over again, just the possibility thereof.
all business related materials are backed up to a server I have, and all personal related materials get backed up to google drive/onedrive/skydrive/simon'smum'sdrive/dropbox
by imaging you never have to "set up", you just restore the image and continue working while all of your cloud providers drag their data back down
@AviD Should have bought a Mac and used Time Machine.
@Simon HARDWARE.FAILURE.
TIME MACHINE WILL DO BACKUPS YOU DONUT
@AviD well, at least you haven't lost your work. a helpful tip for the future is get a dpkg list of packages installed on the system. then shove it into the package manager and have a nice cuppa
15:50
IF YOU DON'T HAVE A NAS OR SOME SORT OF NETWORK HDD AT HOME THEN YOU FAIL AT IT
@Ohnana what the hell is a dpkg??
oh sure, backup all of your stuff to the same physical location as your main copy of the stuff
IT AS IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
and then claim that you've backed up
is that some sorta perverse linuxy thang?
15:51
@AviD quite
@kalina Did you just read what I said about the NAS?
You silly willie eater.
@kalina its even easier for me. Since everything is in VMs.
@AviD it's a package manager
@Simon er
>not using linux
just tricky backing up multiple 100GB files....
15:51
>2k15
@Simon did you read what I said?
@Ohnana >smart
having a NAS box and backing up to it is barely a backup
it's in the same physical location as the main copy of the data
so if said location burns down, your backup was pointless
His house didn't catch on fire.
sigh.
@Simon actually I do, but I need to upgrade that. not big enough for all my VMs.
so only the real critical ones are backedup.
15:52
He said hardware failure, not /quit life failure.
@Simon and you said backups
@kalina He has a bunker. Everyone knows bunkers are impervious to fire.
@Simon houses here rarely catch fire. they are all stone and metal.
sometimes the contents do blaze though.
#justblaze
@Simon's advice on backups is akin to information security where you leave location services on and upload hundreds of pictures a day
15:53
@AviD hahaha i see what you did there
right, keep yapping y'all, Imma off to my yoga.
POOOOOWWWEEEERRRR YOOGAAAAAAA!!!
CUT
@kalina Did someone ever throw donuts at your face?
give me a tylenol, stop yappin' y'all, @AviD you got no style dawg, I'm the queen of dialogue
'Cause I'm about to do it.
15:56
there's only one room I know you from, and I've heard more chat in the silence, when I'm home alone
wat
they rhyme
@Simon no, I've never had donuts thrown at my face
lol microsoft did not acknowledge google zero for their public disclosures
so salty
Is "Google Zero" a sugar free version of Google?
^lol
16:06
@kalina There's nothing sweet about any version of Google.
@Xander in contrast, I find this very difficult to read
.co.uk
OI LAD
@Xander srs? Google is teh win, everybody should just tell Google everything
Says the one who's scared of indexing.
You donut.
I have no fear
16:18
blablabla
I do have quite a bit of boredom
IT'S GROWING
(twss)
@Simon are you a grower or a show-er
wat
are you a grower, or a show-er
or neither
No idea what those mean.
kalina is asking penis questions
16:28
did you go to Leo Hayes?
Figured that. I don't mind answering but I gotta understand the question in the first place.
@Simon are you a grower (small penis that grows large), a show-er (a large penis that grows larger) or neither (you have a tiny penis)
Isn't there one that goes from average to large?
@kalina Define "tiny"
@DavidFreitag if you have to ask this question...
@Simon imaginative

AlexSo I'm currently visiting China, and I use a well known VPN service for both my laptop and my phone. @RоryMcCune very nice!
@RоryMcCune See what happens when the Rories step away...
@RoryAlsop I know we're obviously a restraining influence
@RоryMcCune heh heh heh - now that's a scary thought :-)
@RoryAlsop well as we're the elder statesmen of the DMZ world, it behoves us to set and example ;op

It's a bit like Adventure Time in it's level of insanity
Cartoon Network has gone so downhill...
18:10
Why autocorrect punctuation?
Apparently so, @DavidFreitag
I remember the days of DBZ...
Toonami was so awesome.
Never saw it
(Didn't yet have kids)
@RoryAlsop It's 60% guys going "Aaaaaaaah" 20% fighting, and 20% of someone running to or from something else.
It's where "IIIIIT'S OVER 9000!!!!" comes from.
@DavidFreitag WHHHAAAT 9000?
There are also about 1000 episodes spanning a few series. It's a good watch if you aren't really paying attention.
There is also DBZ abridged (which is freaking hysterical btw)
18:16
@RoryAlsop if you ever want to know the score the thing to do is just want DBZ abridged on youtube, save you mucho time
@RоryMcCune And generate quite a lot of laughs to boot
@DavidFreitag it is quality
Although there is lots of swearing in abridged iirc, but not in the og series
@RoryAlsop That's a great donut!
18:35
OHMIGOSHIAMSOBORED
What's up with music production these days?
@kalina I recommend doing something interesting then
@kalina What about that prototype you were talking about before?
that's why I'm bored.
I wish there was someway to just download all of these tutorials into my brain
You're a brain.

I'm not sure that's even an insult

@kalina No but your face is.
@Simon have you seen the "thug life" meme on Youtube...
I'm bored of @Simon, I'm going to put him on ignore until he's less boring
@RоryMcCune Which one?
18:48
@Simon there's loads... one example (NSFW youtube.com/watch?v=ei7pz6axpxg)
brilliant idea!
pls kalinuh
Yeah, can't really browse NSFW right now.
play your lead riff with multiple identical instruments each playing individual notes, so you can easily route all of your riff sounds and have unique delays on each note
basically put cute kids swearing to gangsta rap
==win
those kids are all going to grow up to be valuable members of society
they should be issued beatings in the name of god because god hates little kids who misbehave
at least that's where my hatred of religion comes from, anyway
18:51
do u even god
pls I'm not a god.
whatever, I'm so bored, I don't even want to bash on Simon in chat
dang it I didn't get enough time to read the 2nd one.
@Simon Something about reproductive organs or something
I am actually just going to go and do something else instead
rather than repeatedly state how bored I am
have fun
@kalina o/

Q: How long does it take to crack 64 digits of 0 and 1

torHow long does it take to crack 64 bit of raw data. With 64 bit I mean 64 digits of 0 or 1. Also give some mathematical explanation.

@DavidFreitag There's a 3D printer for that too
Hey, thinking of it, how are espresso machines not 3D printers?
@TildalWave They aren't they just spew dirty water into a cup
@DavidFreitag OK but they take some raw ingredients and spew out a drink ...
@TildalWave All I know is clean water goes in and something resembling mud comes out the other end. No thank you.
Yeah but you're a mercan what would you know about good coffee anyway?
19:51
I just told you what I know about it
that's what they tell you about it you donut! :)
The very scent of coffee in any form is nauseating.
kids these days!
@DavidFreitag Brennan Heart <3
That track is quite insane.
@DavidFreitag That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard. All of the people I know who hate coffee still love the scent.
19:53
@Xander I can't even go near the aisle that has coffee in it
@DavidFreitag Interesting. Well, to each his own.
@DavidFreitag but you don't mind the smell of baking PCBs? :O
@TildalWave Baking PCBs makes no scent at all. Unless you burn one. Then the paint gets eaten off the walls
I like to bake donuts.
mmmmmh 'dat song.
19:58
@DavidFreitag Well I can definitely smell even fresh printed PCBs, but I guess that's down to each individual's smell acuity
@TildalWave It depends on what kind of solder/paste you use and your reflow profile and a bunch of other things. I use really good quality lead free no clean solder paste that produces no smell
Unless you mean the actual fabrication process. I don't fabricate I assemble.
@DavidFreitag No I meant the soldering. There's always some vapor even off metals. I guess not everyone can smell that. Then again, I can smell when some meat was dyed even, can't stand it, and those are supposed to be scentless.
@DavidFreitag mainstream :(
@Simon That doesn't really matter to me. It sounds damn good that is all I care about.
@TildalWave I have come to enjoy the smell of soldering. Especially the kester flux I use. It smells like walnuts.
BTW I can tell you which office uses laser printers and which one inkjets by smell alone.
20:08
@TildalWave lasers have a very distinctive smell. i've found inkjets to have a more earthy, watery smell.
I'm usually too busy working to smell the things around the office.
@DavidFreitag i babysat printers for 6 months in my old it job
