00:17
@kalina Nice!

1 hour later…
01:32
@kalina Expected length of the development?
01:46
Just took a wpm test 'cause I was curious, I got 107.
NB, NB.
this one needs some guidance
(basically, most of his answers are at best comments, or, looking at his nickname perhaps better said - small, easily digestible, bite-sized pieces of information, but on their own rather unfulfilling)

6 hours later…
08:13
Mornin' all
08:31
@RоryMcCune mo'nin'
@RoryAlsop So I spent like an hour hard labour yesterday clearing our drive of snow... and of course today its all melted anyway!
always the way..
@RоryMcCune The kids are gutted - they made 4 snowmen yesterday after school, and only the heads remain...
(or at least 4 round blobs)
@RoryAlsop yeah today we're back to windy/rainy
08:50
@Simon tricky question
just from testing there are a couple of obstacles that basically make the project unfeasible
but since I just skipped through tutorials to find the pieces I needed to make what I wanted work, I still need to basically RTFM for the engine I'm using
since I really lack clue in what nearly everything on this screen does
but it's all C# or javascript in the back, and I can do fluke those
@kalina I'm impressed that my kids are getting training in game development - from age 12 they get to use the Scratch enging (basic, but actually gives them a lot of freedom for dev)
yeah it's about time this pitiful former imperial superpower actually caught up with the 21st century
now if only you could somehow manage the logistics required to maintain your roads
POT HOLE SPOTTER!
makes
09:08
@kalina Do not use such an application on Belgian roads. You'd go mad from the constant alarm.
09:19
did you know that you need a license to decode MP3 files?
I did.
Such a stragen thing…
Stragen! The new spelling for Strange. Start using it TODAY!
how am I supposed to make a game that loads the user's music library if I have to pay more for a license to decode said music than I'll make for the game?
@kalina can't you use Android libs on the basis that google will already have paid up? (or is that not how it works..?)
well, I don't know, this is still just me messing around
apparently the unity engine can decode mp3s on phones
but not on PCs
that could inherently be Google/Apples involvement
I feel the hardest part of this is going to be the 30 seconds or so of animation for my main game objects
10:00
@kalina Some frameworks provide ogg decoders. I don't know about Unity, but LibGDX is one such framework.
unity natively does ogg
I need some stats, I cba to google
what is the most popular mainstream digital audio format
what am I most likely to find on other people's devices
and surely MP3 is so last millennium by now
Joe Blog is probably still mp3 or m4a
Or whatever apple is…
I have no idea what format google play uses…
Never used it.
yeah
I think for a fully functioning solution I might just target a specific environment
I had no intention of including any music with the game, it was going to load music from the device its installed on and use that
browsing to google.fr gives me a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG
I hate my life
10:50
well, now that's sorted
I stopped doing IT stuff for a reason!
how agitating is it when stuff doesn't just work
11:30
Agreed
Can you imagine if an aircraft company behaved like a software company?
"Sorry, we didn't install flaps, they're coming in a future version"
"Sorry, no wheels, you'll have to patch"
"Didn't include the wings, engine works though, wings come in SP3"
all of this limited liability nonsense is complete rubbish
Microsoft should have been put out of business in the early 2000s due to all of the RPC exploits alone
@kalina definitely
A world where Apple is liable for their own exploding batteries
by the same token
Politicians should be perpetually responsible and liable on a personal level for decisions they make
IE: Tony Blair and George W Bush are both terrorists
11:47
@kalina Can you imagine if the systems keeping an aircraft in the air is written in node.js?
@TerryChia yanno that might explain a certain regional airline....
the value of one human life should be fixed to around €1.5 million
any damage to an individual life should result in you having to pay that much in compensation
that means if your plane crashes because of a "minor problem you thought didn't matter"
@kalina Imagine the arguments..."But that person's life is worth more than that one!"
:-)
or your plane disappears
@RoryAlsop hence fixing it
the average person will earn around ~1 mil in their lifetime
granted, some people earn that in a week
but that's irrelevant
or your operating system that powers a life support machine malfunctions in some way
or a vulnerability is found allowing malware onto the machines running in a nuclear power plant
although in that instance, the company in question should have to pay out for every single person living within the fallout radius
and just instantly bankrupt them
@kalina See, I don't want plane ticket prices increasing 10x.
12:02
@TerryChia I would rather pay 10x more and live
but mainly
if the government passes laws that put a country into economic depression, everybody in favor of passing said law should not get paid until the country returns to its previous economic state
@kalina Paying 10x more for something that statistically is incredibly unlikely to affect you is a pretty terrible idea.
they wouldn't be able to charge 10x more unless there was at least a 5x increase in the economy, all airliners would go out of business by inflating the price that high
ultimately, since it's just "statistically incredibly unlikely", it would just force them not to ignore the little things
You are much more likely to be hit by a car then to end up in a planecrash, even if you fly daily.
basically, it's just increasing the penalties to the point where a single major mistake would decimate you
thus, more diligence will be given to ensuring that nothing major goes wrong
the "single major mistake" basically already applies to the population - a single major mistake will put you in prison for a period of time
@kalina You know this isn't how things work in the real world; the costs will be passed onto the consumers.
12:07
essentially costing you everything of importance in life
companies should be held to the same standard
less of this "oh well it's not my problem"
cough Murdoch
It is your problem, people you hired hacked people's phones
If I hired somebody to cut David Cameron up into small pieces I would still be held liable
raz
raz
@kalina What kind of game?
@raz sure, I'll just give away all of my secrets
would you like the specification I wrote as well, while we're having this conversation?
oh dear God, I just looked at the news
how the hell does a 44 year old get "groomed" by a 16 year old and how the hell does a female judge side with the man?
New Years Resolution #2015: I'm actually going to start keeping a murder list
raz
raz
@kalina Yeah because you know telling me the genre of game will definitely allow me to steal all your secrets.
12:27
mornin'! (+/- a few lazy hours)
@kalina yeah but you'd be my hero :D
@raz totally would
@kalina @raz yeah if she told you it was a truck driving/music mash up thought up when she doing long nights on the roads out of Des Moines it would completely ruin it!
12:42
I finally got around to googling Des Moines
I am especially insulted that you think I live in Iowa.
@kalina TBH I just picked it as a random middle of the USA place that I'd heard of :)
if, and I mean if, I were to live in the USA
I'd live in New York or a Californian city of some description
@kalina nah you'd be portland I reckon
if Canada wasn't an ice cap, I'd much rather live in Canada
or austin in texas
12:44
but even as an ice cap, I'd rather live in Canada than the US
now you're just picturing me as a southern belle.
@kalina Is it Unity?
I'm sure I've said that already
I guess I wasn't there.
fortunately, chat has this transcript functionality
it allows you to see into the past, even if you weren't present
not only that, but it also provides basic search functionality
@kalina heh actually the reasoning for Austin and portland is that their both renowned for counter-culture and weirdness :op
12:47
finally, "click to respondIs it Unity?" is one click, three shifts, 12 characters
while searching was 2 clicks, 5 characters
I don't actually have a point, my brain is just functioning this way today
furthermore, because of the key distribution of the word "unity", you can effortlessly type it with one hand while clicking with the other
even when you have baby hands.
raz
raz
brewery is fun to type because of rewer
@kalina See, Taylor Swift. ;)
sigh
@kalina It's quicker to ask you, wait for the reply than to search for it.
I guess I'm not gonna talk to you anymore since I can just search for some words you said.
And create my own reply.
The possibilities are infinite.
that sounds like a win situation for me
I CAME IN LIKE A WREEEEEEEEEEEEECKKING BAAAAAAAAAAAAALL
13:05
no
nope, cba
@kalina have you seen the Steve Kardynal version of that video
not gonna link it again, as I got complaints last time (although it isn't really nsfw)
is that the really disturbing video recorded on chat roulette?
@kalina I thought it was hilarious but then I have a warped sense of humour
the other peoples faces when they saw it were gold
@RоryMcCune Who the hell complained about that?
13:09
@Simon the thumbnail kind of looks NSFW you can't actually see anything (it's actually less NSFW than the original video) but people were scarred
I know, I've seen all the guy's stuff.
Still, does the person who complained work in a fucking church?
ALL HAIL SATAN YOU DONUT
@RоryMcCune there's a warped sense of humor and then there's a miley cyrus song
one thing is great and one thing really isn't
IIRC he got congrats from Mileys team 'cause it boosted the popularity of the original song, and has 120M views!
even if I do awkwardly dance to them just to show my support for the music
@kalina sure but like most things I only actually heard the song by watching a parody or remake :)
raz
raz
13:12
@RоryMcCune Woah!? How much money do you get for 120M views?!
Oh right... nothing.
well that's the whole infosec taylor swift thing isn't it
introducing a bunch of people who just wouldn't care who she is
@raz oh no if he's a partner that will have paid out ok
raz
raz
You really think he became a partner?
@raz s'possible they have some off-the-wall people in that group who make decent cash off vids
I mean pewdiepie isn't exactly vanilla comedy
and he makes mad bank
yes but pewdiepie doesn't have one video with 120m views
he has hundreds, with billions cumulative
raz
raz
13:13
@RоryMcCune He is all that is wrong with this world
what's wrong with pewdiepie?
raz
raz
Literally everything about him.
unless you can be specific, I'll just put it down to you being jealous about a guy who gets paid to video himself playing games
@kalina steve Kardynal has 350M views so he's not doing too bad
@RоryMcCune 350M views isn't spectacular either, the average ERB episode gets that many views over its lifetime
13:15
@kalina it's a hat!
raz
raz
I think it's sad that people watch a video of someone playing a video. And somehow that turns into money.
so, you don't have a problem with him specifically then?
raz
raz
I don't get how it works. But I think the world is getting dumber for watching him.
how it works is easy
@kalina no... it doesn't their absolute top has ~100M
13:15
Content on internet with ads around it
People view content
ad providers pay for views
google makes money
google shares money
raz
raz
Where are your millions then Kalina? If it's so easy.
@kalina ad providers get suckered 'cause everyone runs adblockplus
@raz sure, if I wanted to post weekly youtube videos, I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue
@raz I think it's sad that you think it's sad.
raz
raz
@TerryChia Stop being so meta
13:17
but, posting weekly youtube videos detailing my life when I am an unreasonably private person seems hypocritical
raz
raz
I think it's sad you think it's sad I think it's ad.
@kalina Doesn't stop most of the world!
@RоryMcCune nah, ad blockers are only used by people in the know
@kalina post videos of people speculating in chatrooms as to whether you are or are not Taylor Swift
@RoryAlsop I'm pretty sure a video of this chatroom will be considered too NSFW for YT.
raz
raz
Post videos of people chatting here on and make comments on them. Then post them to the internet and make millions.
13:18
As for "where are your millions, then, Kalina"
Ask me next year
I could make a snobbish comment like "psh, I already earn more than you do", but, not really my style
raz
raz
If you make millions are you're still chatting on the DMZ... you're doing something wrong.
@kalina I can't believe anyone uses youtube without a blocker its sooooo annoying. I prefer using patreon to pay the content provider direct, cut out all the middle people
@raz not really, depends on your outlook on life
@raz not if that's what you enjoy doing..
I don't see how chatting in the DMZ is different than sitting in a circle chatting or going to a bar and chatting
because we're all actual human beings on the other ends of all of these computers
(except Simon)
13:19
@raz look at notch. stacks of cash, still does gaming marathons
raz
raz
If I had millions I would be out seeing the world. And most likely not on the internet.
@raz what if your day job involved travelling all over already, and your time off you wanted to spend chilling out?
raz
raz
Is that what you do?
well I did go to Australia three times last year
and America, Canada, France, UK, Germany, Spain, Holland
...
well, gg, killed chat
I think what we've learned is that everybody is unique and just because you wouldn't do something doesn't mean that others would.
@kalina yeah you should probably get back to "TruckMusic" the app :op
13:29
@kalina What am I, a donut?
@RоryMcCune actually, TruckMaster, it has undergone some feature creep and now it's also maps, pot hole detection, speed warnings, sleep timer, music based game and it can order from fast food places before you arrive
@Simon I thought we weren't talking ever again?
why would you promise me such a thing and then take it away from me?
Because you'd be sad.
raz
raz
@kalina Valid point. I'm jealous of your travels!
you say that
I'm sure it would become just mundane travelling if you had to do it
say for example
13:37
Spending that much time in an airport doesn't sound appealing at all.
Location A is next to lots of sights to see, you have to be at location A at 11pm until 1am, and then you need to go to Location B to do the same the day after
so you arrive at Location A, see the sights, do your thing, and then sleep, travel to location B without enough time to see the sights, do your thing, then sleep
or you could skip sleep
and see the sights but collapse from exhaustion or fail at matching and make an ass out of yourself publicly
and suddenly, it's less about "travelling to awesome places" and more about just wanting to get home to your own bed
or you can work super hard, and go to multiple locations in a night
work supa hard.jpg
@kalina yeah I used to do a lot of travelling with work. Was exciting for a while but after a bit gets boring/mundane
@Simon you mock, but being in two locations within a few hours of each other is nearly always impossible
suddenly you find yourself required in Halifax at 10pm and Toronto at 2am
and that space between is called EXTREME STRESS
I once did Sheffield for my first location and some random pier in Southampton for my second with enough time between to get there by driving at 100+mph
which is great until you get to the main flyover in Birmingham and your satnav sends you towards Coventry
What the hell is going on with all the vague one-liner "answers" on the site? And how do those get upvotes?
0
A: What is the encoding of that string?

wrighttowIt uses ROT13, you can use search the decoder online.

had +1
13:45
@TildalWave Puppets wearing socks?
@TerryChia I know, but this obvious?
even sockpuppets suck these days
@TildalWave Must be @Simon.
#me
I wonder when SE will start collapsing on itself
13:47
@Simon I think that hashtags have to be at least 3 characters in length
that has to happen at some point
Aww, who unpinned @AviD's donut messages?
@TildalWave #medonut
better
@Simon At least 8 characters and contains at least one letter, number and symbol.
13:48
@TerryChia #medonut1337#
@TerryChia that's the # you donut
Passwords cannot be more than 8 characters in length
@TerryChia me :) I thought we'd taken that one far enough
Have we tho? Have we?
@RоryMcCune "far enough" in The DMZ...?
13:50
how much further could really take that gag before it ended in suspensions...
albeit making fun of @AviD may have gotten us a bit more leeway than usual
normally if you take it further than gagging you get choking and puking
wat
what
if you keep forcing in something you're gagging against, you'll choke and then eventually puke
I'm guessing you've never poked a stick of celery against the back of your throat
I don't understand the issue here, I am merely sharing my experiences
boredom breed curiosity, sometimes you just end up trying things
@kalina Dammit! :)
13:55
the line started the blur into the horizon
I'm bored
there are only so many tutorial videos I can watch before my brain enters a read only state
14:11
@kalina You got @TerryChia all horny now.
Anyone here who wants to explain to someone why SHA512 is bad and you should use bcrypt or PBKDF2? I'll point him this way if someone wants to help explain.
that moment when you bite down on a cream cake and spray cream all over yourself
that moment when kalina took over the starwall in the DMZ, again
@Arperum I wish I understood this sentence
Did you think about perhaps, possibly, just linking him to the answer that already exists?
@kalina Different hashing algorithms. But we succeeded in convincing him why he should use the latter two.
Hey, I just read this, and this is crazy, but here's a website, so read it maybe?
syllable matching
Are you on a mainstream streak or what?
14:24
no
@kalina I somehow forget these things exist, while using them.
The issue with my friend made me start re-evaluating my current path, while said re-evaluation is occurring, I'm technically in a state of "I have quit drugs"
as such, my attention is all over the place
this is where an American goes and says "oh well, you could get prescribed adderall for ADD"
and I merely go "well, that's ironic..."
14:39
before you came into my life, I missed you so bad
wat
have a comma,
second part of previous sentence
do you even saint tropez bro
@kalina moar drugs
no, no drugs
at least until I conclude otherwise
heavy detoxing
14:43
@kalina I was making fun of your friend. adderall isn't exactly something to mess with
nobody has suggested adderall in this instance
I was merely playing on the fact the standard American response to everything is to prescribe synthetic versions of banned classified narcotics
adderall is ritalin is cocaine
(basically)
NARCO POLO
OPIATE AFFLICTION? CURE YOURSELF WITH THIS SYNTHETIC OPIATE CALLED METHADONE
MEGADONE
methadone has the pain relief of opiates without the "high" so you can focus on getting clean without being chained to your addiction
but yeah, the idea is silly from an outside perspective
14:47
the relevance of your statement doesn't decrease the irony
oh absolutely. meds are weird
you know what, we've legalized marijuana and even though all of our scare mongering says that marijuana turns people into serial rapist child molesters that will murder an entire school of everybody just because you looked at them funny, tax revenue has gone up, crime has gone down
no kidding. everyone's too baked to screw with people
oh but, the government said
FOR LITERALLY A CENTURY
that marijuana turns you into a serial rapist child molesting murderer
also said that gay people will harm your kids.
we're loosening up, and our government reflects that
14:50
the problem is, everybody smoking marijuana was too stoned to form a coherent response to the blatant lies
