hey people
I got a question. And I thought I would ask it on the chat :) Nowadays Facebook allow the feature of not displaying your email address to other friends and users of Facebook, so why does a strong password matter? If they don't know the email ID, and Assuming that I don't tell anyone my email ID, how can someone hack my Facebook account just by guessing the password ?
It happens in stackexchange too that others don't really see the email address, for example I can't see any of you guys email address. So how will I be able to even think of hacking?
I don't understand why people fuss about strong passwords, if they just use an email ID that no one uses ??? And specially stack exchange most people don't put their real names and no one knows who the other person is in real life. So why is strong passwords encouraged ?
06:55
Yeah, there are certain questions that I just don't want to attempt to answer. Especially not in chat.

2 hours later…
08:56
@TildalWave ahh yeah, right, the first time @RoryAlsop came to visit here.
'g mornin'
IS IT?? IS IT REALLY??
@tylerl because, at least in this case, its not about "answering" a specific question, but re-educating from the lowest basics?
Disabusing someone of an imagined notion is incredibly hard and not very rewarding.
@StackExchange LOL the tooltip is even better. -> what happens when a slightly asperger engineer meets ethics.
> Shoot the baby! Shoot the baby!!
4
09:33
don't shoot the baby
its from a book
but I am glad to hear you say that
though I am worried what alternatives you have in mind
I was merely playing on don't kick the baby
that too is "kick the baby"
not if you're Ike it isn't
huh, just checked, and the baby does in fact always say "dont kick the baby"
never noticed that
"don't kick the goddamn baby"
09:39
Morning!
Additionally, Ike rocks!
@RoryAlsop 'G morning gandalf
I like that
Despite not having a moustache, beard, long hair, a cloak, or in fact any magical abilities
atleast the age is something similar
:D
@RoryAlsop you don't have a wizard hat and cloak?
09:44
@kalina @RoryAlsop you don't?? Gee your sex life is weird.
I have the hat...
@Avid - xkcd whatif is good
the hat is not enough
@kalina old school
@RoryAlsop yes. are you referring to something specific?
09:45
^ for those that don't spend their lives on the Internet
@RоryMcCune and who in this channel would that be?
oh, I guess... me
@kalina pphhbbt
@RоryMcCune I... umm.... would you believe I've never heard that?
@AviD really?
09:48
I know, it really breaks the dynamics with me not being on the internet 24/7 doesn't it
now that is scary, I naturally adopt the memes before I'd heard of them.
suddenly I can claim I'm awesome and there is enough time that I'm not on chat that it could be legit
@RoryAlsop its funny
but first time I'd heard of that
@AviD I'm sorry, this isn't possible
blog.dnsimple.com/2014/12/incident-report-ddos <-- on an unrelated note interesting set of risks here. DNS provider taken out 'cause they took on a customer who was already experiencing a DDoS attack.
09:52
@kalina scout's honour
did find this though
The Scouts hold negative reputation levels with... oooh ponies
cuz I know you like ponies
I am so over MLP
I haven't seen any of the recent ones
due to being busy
.
but more importantly, I haven't even downloaded them as though I had the intention to watch them
The Scouts hold a negative reputation level with me, Scouts' honour means nothing.
uhh you know thats an expression, right?
I was never in the scouts
too lazy
it's people like you that give The Scouts a negative reputation level with me.
09:55
ha
that and them being an exclusively male only subgroup of society
further exacerbated by the fact the female version is named something stupid like the beavers or the cupcakes or some shit
hurhurhur, beavers
what are you, like 12?
okay @RоryMcCune that meme is funny. it linked to bloodninja.org, hysterical.
10:18
@kalina Where the heck are you from? 'Round here, we just call them Girl Scouts.
I'm from earth
@AviD Interestingly, I was somewhat aware of it but didn't know it was an actual meme. Stumbled across it awhile back on bash.org though: bash.org/?104383
Come to think of it, why am I just now wondering why bash.org has nothing to do with Bourne Again Shell?
okay damn that IS funny
@Iszi you are a bit late with that
bash.org is nearly as old as I am
talk about delayed reactions
fat neurons must have kept that thought trapped in your brain
@kalina Oh, no. I've known about bash.org for many years. I'm just now coming around to wondering why it's an IRC log dumping ground instead of homepage for the bash shell.
Haha. This is currently #2. Oldie but a goodie. Sad that we all probably know from personal experience there's people out there who actually would fall for this. bash.org/?244321
Another classic. Been through this once or twice, but in more enterprise-level sorts of situations - which just makes it more sad. bash.org/?5273
10:29
@Iszi at a previous job we lost the Root CA.
literally.
And, since it was off (during regular operations we only used the IntermediateCA, the RootCA itself was off for reasons), we couldnt ping it or locate it in any way.
@AviD You mean, like permanently? WTF? How do you just lose a CA?
and time came to renew the intermediate's certificate....
Know what? I give up on posting these. Just too much good stuff to be flooding chat with all of it. Have a look around here for yourselves. bash.org/?top Enjoy.
@Iszi it's not like you need to use it often. Recommendation given at the time was to only use the Intermediate CA, and shut the Root down for protection (amongst other things). Big server room, many computers....
@AviD But, I mean... You never found it?
10:32
@Iszi hmm... If I remember correctly, they redid the PKI completely. Then found it in a corner a couple months later.
but I might be confusing the sequence of events.
In the event of zombie apocalypse, activate the SPLAT protocols
@AviD Right, because it would have totally made more sense for them to redo the PKI after they finally found the Root CA?
SPLAT FOREVER
@Iszi well no, obviously, but the PKI was re-done there a couple of times anyway.
baaad integrators.
on the upside, I did get a first row seat to PKI implementation.
multiple times.
and got to learn aaaall about common mistakes when deploying PKI.
Heh.
So, I said I wasn't going to be sharing any more of these but this one actually made me LOL. I've surely read it a dozen times or so over the years, but it's still that awesome.
> <Locl-Yocl> I helped the EMTs at a car wreck and got blood all over my arms and shirt. It looked like I murdered 20 people with a fork... anyway, I walked into a convieniance store down the street and said my girlfriend needs a tampon. The guy at the counter was mortified.
10:44
btw, damn you @Iszi, I got stuff to do today.
@AviD Oh, yeah. Did I forget to mention that site's a total productivity killer?
guys
I am blaming you for my relapse
I hope you all take it very seriously and feel ashamed
oh, ok then
at least a little remorse?
I'm sure that some of you feel a little remorse just by me being here at all
that's not remorse we're feeling.
10:49
oh
you can never just say you're happy to see me, can you?
no, that actually IS a rabbit in my pocket
what?!
I borrowed it from my neighbors
needed a free hand
you put a rabbit in your pocket?
seriously?
10:52
I don't feel remorse or regret. And yes, that's a oven timer in my pocket.
@AviD Dude, a rabbit? Don't their teeth get in the way?
I didn't even mean happy to see me like that
whaaa?
I merely meant my presence isn't causing you any upset
I guess i'm destined to be forever alone
> "So, is that a rabbit in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
Sorry, couldnt find the clip :-(
10:57
@kalina oh - I was on reddit/r/wtf and saw an MLP tattoo that was entirely NSFW. I had to forward the link to a friend of mine who is really into MLP. She was not amused.
@kalina Scouts aren't male only though. Which was nice when I was in the Scouts in the Falklands. Numbers were pretty even for most activities - driving tanks, sleeping in submarines, jumping out of helicopters etc
@RoryAlsop I can't ever hear MLP without thinking More London Place, confused me the first couple of times I came across the term in the pony based sense of it
@RоryMcCune me too, to be honest :-)
I've forgotten how to do unicode hearts and musical notes
it's sad googling them
casualties of not internetting
it's like playing an FPS for the first time in years, online against people who play all the time
and suddenly you realise you can't aim and your reactions are measured in seconds
11:15
@kalina I hear ya
and then somebody who obviously lives in his parents basement with milk bottle bottoms for glasses and spots all over his face starts making derogatory comments over voice comms
because, why not
hey now, thats prejudiced
so, sue me
need for glasses is largely influenced by genetics
he might not need glasses at all
in which case he's obviously a hipster
which is worse
11:20
ha
then of course, there is this
I'm going to regret clicking this, aren't I
@AviD DUDE, what did we say about no college humour during the working day!!
@kalina heh, only if you dont have time for collegehumor
@RоryMcCune heehee, seeeeee?
I don't have time for collegehumour
I'm going to go and play Battlefield 4 for a bit
I haven't reached my being abused quota for the day
youtubes view counters were 32 bit ints
gangnam style has >2147483647 views
wat
now that is a ridiculous waste of accumulative time
11:30
exactly
2,147,483,647 views / 872 days = 2,462,711 views per day (102,613 per hour, 1,710 per second)
4m12s * 2,147,483,647 views = 9,019,431,317 minutes (150,323,855 hours, 6,263,494 days, 17,160 years)
my faith in humanity...
granted, I'd be awfully proud if one of my tracks broke youtube.
wow. If @RoryAlsop were to watch that much, he wouldnt even have much time left over.
@kalina does that count watching the full thing or even just a quick 2 second view
unique page impressions over time, surely?
so hey, is anybody here familiar with 4GL?
the programming language
yes
11:38
of which there, apparently, several.
yes, because "4GL" is merely a category
it is also the name of a programming language.
several, actually.
so is your face
my boredom is escalating as I come to the realisation that this week has turned into nothing but chatting on the internet
@AviD I always thought of 4GL as a generic term to define so called 4th generation languages. usually used as a marketing thing to get people to believe they are getting something new and improved...
@RоryMcCune Wasn't 4GL the graphics programming language?
@kalina definitely
11:47
that's opengl
@kalina (I know - I was being silly)
I have too many OpenGL manuals on my bookshelf
@RoryAlsop well it's not the same as 4L I now know, after a google typo, which is apparently a south Korean girl group
no doubt you still have that tab open
@kalina actually no, I corrected it and went to the wikipedia page on 4GL
A fourth-generation programming language (4GL) is a computer programming language envisioned as a refinement of the style of languages classified as third-generation programming language (3GL). Each of the programming language generations aims to provide a higher level of abstraction of the internal computer hardware details, making the language more programmer-friendly, powerful and versatile. While the definition of 4GL has changed over time, it can be typified by operating more with large collections of information at once rather than focus on just bits and bytes. Languages claimed to be 4GL...
colour me shocked
11:52
@kalina you're already pink
is pink the colour of shocked
?
@RоryMcCune oh definitely. But apparently some of them wanted to be unique so they chose the completely-non-generic name of "4GL".
what are everybody's opinions on the "right to be forgotten"
absolutely. there are just some things that are wrong to remember.
like @Simon.
Dammit!
@kalina in principle I can see some reasonable use cases, but it is entirely open to abuse
11:58
the reasonable use cases are so limited that the abuse is going to occur more frequently than legitimate use, though
okay I dont know what you guys are talking about
did I miss an important tweet or something?
did you know that while wikipedia are begging you for money, they're sat on a 60 mil stockpile of cash running through swiss bank accounts?
snopes or it didnt happen
snopes?
@AviD Absolutely. It was the best tweet I have ever seen.
12:00
@Ninefingers oh hello you!
I wonder if I should log into my twitter account and post a link of my stack exchange account
"it's me \o/ I was the kalina all along!"
whats to stop someone else from doing that and claiming all the glory?
BOOM I just did it
err, umm, I mean you did
before you know it there will be HUNDREDS of twitter accounts claiming to be the real kalina
@AviD #imspartacus
#weareallbrian
@AviD #andsosmywife
12:04
@AviD Ok you win.
oh maaan. I was trying to create a bogus twitter account named "TheRealKalina". Turns out it was already taken.
@AviD Go for ReallyTheRealKalina
probably one of you clowns, just quicker on the mouse finger.
morning ± lazy hours
not sure if I destroyed the clients app or if they are having performance issues
12:06
that's what she said (sort of)
@LucasKauffman the enternal web app tester question
heh @RoryAlsop just noticed something interesting - total flags handled by mods is a Geometric progression
@LucasKauffman oh lord have you been fuzzing out of the sandbox again!?
approximately
@TildalWave Active Scanner in Burp :3
on just three forms though :(
12:09
@AviD Is that a subtle way to say Rory needs to handle more flags?
@Ninefingers oh no, he is in the lead.
by far
twice as many as me, in fact
but I already said that, didnt I
@LucasKauffman hehe it's gonna be a looong report :)
@TildalWave TWSS
@AviD Ahhhh :)
@AviD thanks :)
12:20
So.... I see a starred song on the right
what.... happened?
@Ninefingers I made a career switch
@Ninefingers I dress up these days and make songs
@Ninefingers My stagename is Lorde
@LucasKauffman I see
@LucasKauffman How is this new direction going?
@Ninefingers Actually quite good, I made some very popular songs
What makeup,photoshop and some CGI can't do
she scares me
@AviD That's no way to talk about Lucas' new career!
12:25
O.M.G. I just realized..... @kalina is Lorde!!
@AviD nah, Lorde is Canadian, @Kalina isn't apologizing enough to be Canadian
thats why she doesnt want us to know, shes embarrassed.
oof, LinkedIn doesnt have revision history.
raz
raz
ya ya ya, I am Lorde
@raz @kalina wrong account, that's your sockpuppet
@LucasKauffman prefer this version
^ this is apparently Lorde's favourite cover
12:35
funny, I'd heard that one before (thanks to you, ofc) but not the original till now
@AviD there's a load of modern music that I've only heard 'cause of Scott Bradlee
yknow that feeling when you see somebody that used to work for you, years ago, and just barely - cuz he was mediocre at best (and borderline incompetent) - and discover that he has some ridiculously senior position in a big respected company? And you can't help but wonder "WTF?"
@AviD no, not yet, not old enough I guess
I mean, I did my best to mentor the hell out of him, but I have no illusions that I was able to transform him into somebody that could conceivably do a halfway decent job in such a position, or that he would be able to grow that much in such few years....
@AviD the question is if he's still doing the same, I had a colleague who sucked at his job and then transfered to another department and discipline in which he kicked ass
12:40
@LucasKauffman umm.... no, I wasnt talking about you, of course not..... awwwwkwaaard
@AviD guess you did :p
naw man, t'wasnt me. I cant take credit (or blame) for that one.
then there are those who you just know will do well, even if they are lacking enough experience right now.
those are great to watch.
damn I'm feeling old
@AviD it's not just feeling though!
ha! yay, my nasty letter of complaint to the insurance company the other day seems to be working. one of the dev managers there just viewed my LinkedIn profile :-)
@AviD what complaint was it
12:45
@AviD hey I know how to solve that, just taunt @RoryAlsop for his ancientness :)
@RоryMcCune hehehe
@LucasKauffman that their site sucks ass
The other day I noticed that my bank only offers request for information for a certain department through fax ...
@AviD most do
@AviD I'd say taunt me but on the adjusted version of real age = calendar age +(children x 5) I'm younger than you :)
no no, this was beyond that.
@RоryMcCune Children adjust your age? Hahahaa
12:47
@Ninefingers hell yeah, level of stress is worth at least 5 years per kid :)
"IE6 only".... worse password policies than most... then they send me a doc showing in great detail how to lower my browser's security level so the site works.... and other 1998 stuff that I dont remember
@RоryMcCune heh, true.... well we're close enough anyway
@AviD are you obliged to use them? If not...
@AviD do they have a European subsidiary
@RоryMcCune Ok, taking notes now
@Ninefingers I've always said how old you are is not about your age, its about how many kids you have.
12:49
@AviD IE6 only should be banned by now for financial websites!
@Ninefingers I have some ancient pension there for a long time...
@AviD if so you can throw in the privacy law which will get voted which can lead up to penalties to 5% of global revenue if they're not protecting your personal data well enough
@RоryMcCune I reviewed apps written in VB 5.5...
@RоryMcCune and note its not additive, it's multiplicative
@LucasKauffman shudder
@RоryMcCune tell me about it. OFFICIAL NOTICE that chrome/FF dont work, and IE 9/10/11 dont either unless ...
@LucasKauffman oh they are already in violation of the local regulations. I pointed this out to them.
12:51
@AviD yep, had an assessment on that type of app as well, was a bitch to get an older browser set up
thats probably the only thing that got their attention.
@LucasKauffman I wrote apps in VB 3.
@AviD you know that I'm not going to confirm this, right?
@AviD back when you were 16?
@LucasKauffman nope
in mah twernties
@AviD back when you were 26?
12:53
@kalina The traditional answer is "I can neither confirm nor deny that..."
yes, that's what I meant
@LucasKauffman hmmm... actually pretty close to that, yeah
@AviD what insurance company is this?
if I can ask ofc
Or "It is long standing policy that I do not comment on my musical career, but all music is subject to strict oversight (well sort of - see the X factor) to ensure it is necessary and proportionate"
@LucasKauffman local Israeli one
12:55
@AviD Was that before 32-bit VB?
Oh man!
@Ninefingers uhh yeah.... ? :-$
@AviD their dev manager will now get booted for doing fuck all in development for 10 years :p
@LucasKauffman oh please. the whole place is barely in the 20th century.
I've consulted to them many years ago, I dont doubt that nothing has changed
it used to be we would review some of their main systems once a year.
and, shockingly, nothing had changed from year to year
tbf most of the insurance companies here are sucky with tech and infosec - this morning I had to explain to one why "My mother's maiden name" is NOT a good form of authentication - but this one was just worser.
@kalina It's okay. We know Lorde is @LucasKauffman anyway :)
@LucasKauffman ahhhh ha ha ha. Alternatively he's wanted to for ages and management don't think they need to spend on updates which add no functionality 'cause that wasn't in the original project budget (it almost never is)
I remember seeing an insurance system after 2010 that used a .BAT file on the website as a kind of ersatz CGI script
12:59
@AviD My fav is explaining to telephone people how my mother's maiden name is in fact e5$1xs@{}
@RоryMcCune yeah, this is more likely. Eve more likelier is that he is not competent enough to know that.
