I am seriously seriously addicted to cake
I was feeling all sleep deprived from the weekend and then I had cake
which made me no longer sleep deprived

@kalina s/cake/crack/
@kalina Who are you and what have you done to the real @kalina? The real @kalina would split that into "addicted to" and ten minutes later "cake!" for trolling!
@Polynomial no, crack is really bad for you
@kalina MDMA
13:01
I did crack once
@LucasKauffman I've got 7? THat's terribly disappointing
@LucasKauffman I shall now proceed to kick myself for being in that list.
well, multiple onces repeatedly over a 8 month period
@LucasKauffman I do like MDMA
@LucasKauffman I also wouldn't want to take any drug named Moderately Disgusting Monkey Anus
@Polynomial But it's only moderately disgusting!
13:02
@FEichinger I don't troll
you already sound like a moderator
god I love elasticsearch
@kalina What do you call it, then? "deception"?
@LucasKauffman when I run the search, I get 0 results for me...
@FEichinger ...?
@LucasKauffman Is that what morbidly obese people use to find their genitals in their sweatpants?

@kalina Who are you and what have you done to the real @kalina? The real @kalina would split that into "addicted to" and ten minutes later "cake!" for trolling!
What would you call that, if not trolling?
@Polynomial :O best database ever!
there could be plenty of reasons why that situation would occur
@FEichinger Suspense!
for example, being interrupted mid sentence
suspense
for comical purposes
13:04
star baiting
extreme asthma
@TerryChia At least I got the balls to pour a bucket of ice/water on my head and don't feel the need to make up a lame excuse instead of doing it.
@Simon I'd just donate money to a different charity out of spite for the stupid viral thing.
If you're proud about dumping the ice water on you, you're doing the challenge wrong.
> Nooooo - not YOLO. YOLF!
@TerryChia encrypt-tag yolo makes no sense, but hash-tag yolo does, according to @Simon
@TerryChia shuddit you! @AviD - can we kick @Terry? "HR manager" is his "#yolo"
@Simon - I didn't hear a single 'yolo' in that vid. You may need to redo it :-)
My mother in law wanted to get the kids wristbands which said yolo on them. My middle child quite rightly countered with "nonoyolo - it's the law"
13:06
maybe to MIND, because you're all mad for doing it.
@FEichinger The whole thing evolved a bit. The original thing was to only do it as a forfeit for not donating. Now it's a "donate a bit and do the challenge, or donate more and don't do it".
it's still stupid, imo.
Hey you donuts, by actually pouring the bucket on your head, you get to nominate 3 people which equals more donations.
@Polynomial if you haven't worked with Elasticsearch you should give it a go, it's incredible fast at searching text. It's built on top of Lucene and even CERN is now using it to index data from the hydroncolider.
@Simon Right, because donating instead of pouring water on myself because I'm not feeling well is stupid.
@TerryChia I did both...
I was fucked up all week because of gastroenteritis and did it anyway.
@TerryChia Terry why you no throw ice bucket over your head?
13:09
@Simon Gastroenteritis == fucking awful. My condolences.
@LucasKauffman Surely in his country the ice would melt before he even picked the bucket up?
@Polynomial It was worse than the pain after my appendix surgery, it is indeed awful.
@LucasKauffman Having a cold recently. Plus doing it in this weather will just make it a heck lot worse.
@Polynomial Hey, it's not that hot.
@Simon I got it once right as I was moving house. I couldn't even stand up. Had to get people to do most of the work for me :/
@TerryChia It is for European people
@Simon I actually slept on the floor in the new house while other people put stuff together.
13:11
@Polynomial poor Poly :(
@LucasKauffman ahhhhhhh - I thought your search was for the f-word. :-)
@RoryAlsop Frankfort?
@RoryAlsop let me check for the f-word
@ScottPack Felching
@Polynomial Haha, yeah it sucks that much.
13:12
@RoryAlsop nothing
@Polynomial Fungible
@LucasKauffman correct
@LucasKauffman Hard to believe. :P
@ScottPack Fabricated.
@Polynomial Fiduciary
13:13
ooh, good one
@ScottPack Felicitations
Ooo...that one has a nice mouthfeel too.

@ScottPack TWSS

@LucasKauffman Do "TWSS"

I had to google the spelling of that one! haha
13:16
@Polynomial Now you're just getting silly.
@LucasKauffman Hehe. That's less than I expected.
@ScottPack You're face is silly.
Although it was quite the followup to feckless.
@LucasKauffman Those stats actually make a lot of sense and seem to follow my expectations.
@ScottPack This game does certainly remind me of Mornington Crescent.
@Polynomial flagellomania
13:18
@ScottPack fuliguline
I have no idea what purpose that word serves.
one day someone thought "hmm, I need a word for 'like a sea duck'..."
@Polynomial It sounds like a disease involving fungus.
@Polynomial For what it's worth...phrontistery.info/f.html
@ScottPack I'm certainly not on that page shifty eyes
Well, this entire thing is rather fustian.
I'd rather be furnicular than continue.
FWIW, it did give me a good term for @TerryChia: frigolabile
13:21
@Polynomial Hehe.
#classicsmorning
If #Simon's liberal usage of hashtags in SE chat ever leads to an implementation of hashtags in SE chat, I will rain hell on him.
I don't think I've ever used hashtags on twitter or FB.
@Polynomial you keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means
what are these dotted lines in chat?
13:30
@kalina Catch-up.
why do I have so many of them, surely they should only appear where you last read up to?
I think there should be three of them max.
@FEichinger based on how many other features we wish we had, I think we're probably safe there for a while anyway
@AJHenderson Considering the bot spam we had earlier, nothing is "safe".
besides, I like to hope the SE devs are smarter than Simon
13:31
@AJHenderson Have you seen the -2 spam?
What the fuck do any of you fucks know how smart I am?
Jesus fucking Christ.
@FEichinger come again?
@Simon Mostly because of the things you type in here?
translate es: cheese omelette
:(
@LucasKauffman Still ded.
13:33
@TerryChia Right, because I'm fucking around most of the time here, it means that there's no chance I can be clever.
It makes a lot of sense, ladies.
@Simon you also seem to have issues with gender recognition ;)
@Simon Hint: It's the same logic you apply to calling people fat and lazy.
@Simon That makes absolutely zero sense.
I give up. I fucking give up.
@FEichinger also the same logic as kalina uses for setting people on fire
13:34
@AJHenderson No, she has a ... system for that.
@AJHenderson Isn't that just a RNG?
@TerryChia is it really random when it always returns 1
@AJHenderson Well yeah, she always sets people on fire. The person she sets on fire is random though.
@Simon and besides, I was just referring to the fact they wouldn't want to make gratuitous use of Yolo and hashtags
@TerryChia I haven't set anybody on fire in ages, so I don't know what you're talking about
13:36
Aug 10 at 13:02, by kalina
sets fire to @TerryChia
that must explain why Simon is feeling so cold
@FEichinger hahaha!
Jun 30 at 13:25, by kalina
sets fire to @FEichinger
@FEichinger more than 2 weeks ago
@kalina You were barely even here in those two weeks!
13:37
@kalina What's "in ages" to you? Yesterday?
@TerryChia well, it depends on what happens during the period of time between occurrences
@TerryChia well it is if you ask a YEC
for example, I slept for 14 hours last night, if I had set fire to somebody before sleeping it would have seemed like a short period of time
@AJHenderson YEC?
whereas the last two weeks I've been in 5 different countries
so yes, ages in this instance is >2 weeks
13:39
@TerryChia Young Earther.
@TerryChia young earth creationist, silly language joke, the word used most often translates as age, but they take it as 24 hour day
@AJHenderson Ahh.
How about you donuts go listen to some real music?
@Polynomial that was a very bad joke :op (I Approve)
@RоryMcCune hehe
@Simon EXCESSIVE VOMIT
13:44
@Simon impossible, his hair isn't nearly long enough for that to be real music
@Polynomial COME ON
@AJHenderson yeah, basically if their hair is shorter than Dobbin from Smeg & The Heads (young Lister's band from Red Dwarf) then it's not real music.
They're too emo to have really long hair.
(My Chemical Romance that is)
almost anything from Nuclear Blast Records is acceptable.
example...
@RоryMcCune Where have you been old man? That was ages ago.
13:47
listen, and wait for the chorus.
and tell me that doesn't make you want to bang your fuckin' head
@Polynomial The chorus has a lot of energy, indeed.
@Simon it's actually a dubstep drum pattern.
Dumbest vendor response to security problem award 2014: blogs.comodo.com/comodo_news/…
@Polynomial It's pretty neat.
or if you wanna go full on batshit crazy
definitely my favourite ABRB track
saw them live a while back, the bassist did the crazy little jiggery bit after the second breakdown and fistbumped me right at the end. was awesome.
13:53
I linked the first song to the gf to see what she has to say about it.
She used to listen to that stuff a damn lot.
The lyrics are actually really good too in the first one. It's all about stripping people of rights in a world full of surveillance, and has a lot of play-on-words stuff with the German national literature.
@TerryChia :op New job man, got stuff to set-up
@Polynomial Yeah, I caught all that. COUGH COUGH.
@RоryMcCune Ah right. When are you starting again?
@TerryChia today :)
13:56
@RоryMcCune Oh cool! All the best!
Remember to boss @deed02392 around.
@TerryChia heh
@Simon "Here there is no freedom, because freedom does not exist. There is no equality, but you don't want to be the same. Here there is no freedom, because you don't want to be free. There is no equality, but you don't want to be the same."
@Polynomial I dig that.
that's pretty rough translation btw, it'd sound better if someone that properly speaks German translated it
@Simon the first verse is something along the lines of "Are you afraid of freedom because it demands work? Did you fear that you'd be eternally enslaved? You're held by the chains that seduce you daily, yet you still wish to hold the chains that enslave others."
@Polynomial Now, that explains the whole video.
14:00
last bit might actually be "You're seduced by the chains that hold you daily"... I can't work out which way it is
and automated translation butchers it horribly
my German sucks tbh.
It's ok, mine sucks more.
here's something a little more accessible (and epic):
@Polynomial Yeah the ABRB one you linked was kind of too fast.
Now that the music industry's ill, we're the fucking antidote!
All you ironic pop-rock fucks, DON'T YOU FUCK WITH METAAAAAL!
I'm gutted they split before I even heard of them, would've been amazing to see SYL live.
@Polynomial I like. The ABRB one is good too.
14:04
almost all of their lyrics are just massive pisstakes on the metal scene and music industry.
@Polynomial I like that.
their best one for headbanging like hell is "Love?"
*There is no external way to tell when a woman is ready to conceive*...
...
MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRCH!
I still don't understand what happened to me to somewhat enjoy metal now.
@Simon you grew up a little?
you acquired some good taste?
;]
14:08
lulz
Hardstyle has opened my mind to all genres, weirdly.
And to faster stuff, since most of the tracks are ~150 BPM.
once you can listen to something at badly damaged as hard style, you can listen to anything
LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Go spend 5 minutes on your kick-drum to make it good to go, you donut.
5 minutes? I just template everything
Deadmau5 gets away with it, why can't I?
lawl
just load up the last track, change the melody, release it under a different name
NP
14:10
I've got a rather eclectic set of tastes. Everything from ABRB and Gorija to Eminem and LMFAO to Venetian Snares and Noisia.
@Simon To be fair, try 5 minutes on the drums for an ABRB track and you'll have much much fitter ankles!
@Polynomial Oh I believe ya.
I still hate my parents for not making me pick up an instrument when I was a kid.
@Simon that's why I plan to make my kids take up the Kazoo
or perhaps the glockenspiel
or if they are very ambitious, the triangle
lulz
@AJHenderson Hey, I've seen a triangle solo on a festival stage before!
my friend used to be the guitarist in a band called Martyr Defiled, and I helped them with stage gear a few times... watching the drummer from the back was just insane
14:14
@Arperum I actually mentioned glock because I know a musical comedy duo where one of the guys sings and plays glock
it's weird seeing them in a music video
jump to 1:08 for an example of epic kick bursts
I now get to be the hipster guy who says "I knew them back when they played gigs in the back rooms of pubs to a crowd of 8 people"
@AJHenderson I completely forgot what band it was though with the triangle, I'm not even certain where I've seen them anymore... Or it was The Black Tartan Clan, or some band I completely forgot the name of that played on Metaldays 2012, on the second stage.
@Arperum potentially Eluveitie?
they have some batshit weird instruments... they played a bagpipes solo in the middle of the first gig I saw them at
@Polynomial is it sad that things like that don't even phase me anymore
@Polynomial No triangle. Bagpipes for sure, (BTC has bagpipes too)
14:17
@RоryMcCune congrats! See you on IRC soon?
@Polynomial And they have some other super old instrument that I don't know the english name for. (Draailier in Dutch)
@Polynomial bagpipes totally could work for metal, they are a pretty badass instrument
@Arperum Hurdy Gurdy (stupid name, I know)
@Polynomial Worst English name ever.
@Arperum it's technically a kind of Loon, I believe.
14:19
the bagpiper at the wedding I shot a couple weekends back could totally have been in a metal band
I saw Eluveitie for the first time when them and Behemoth supported Slayer.
and actually @simon, I've changed my mind, I shall make sure they learn to play the Theramin instead
I'm going to see BTC + 8 other bands friday. BTC is basically bagpipes + metal.
Eluveitie were on first, and Behemoth came on stage early by accident while they were moving around
@AJHenderson The hell.
14:21
so they ended up doing a mashup set
was epic
@Arperum this I must listen to
@AJHenderson Yes, yes you should.
@Polynomial and this is why festivals are awesome
@Arperum I'm a google play music guy, what's the song name?
14:23
@AJHenderson this was just a little gig at Rock City in Nottingham
@Polynomial ah
@AJHenderson Na Fir Dileas, played by The Black Tartan Clan.
you know what band are wholly underrated? Machinae Supremacy.
@Polynomial and I suppose either way that's a lie, what I really like about festivals is hanging out backstage with the bands
because that's how I roll
14:27
oh yes, and not having to pay to be there
rock + chiptune + gamer/metal lyrics = win
and occasionally even being paid... miss having the free time for that
which is also part of why it no longer feels weird to see people I know in music videos
I miss the donut I threw away.
@AJHenderson Not having to pay is awesome. It doesn't happen all that frequent for me though (I had a free VIP-ticket at metaldays 2012, and friday I have a free press-ticket for some festival here in Belgium).
@Arperum I do A/V stuff, so I used to frequently either be working with the sound, video or photography
and when you realize musicians are normal people (and generally they realize it too), you can actually have pretty cool conversations with them when you act normal around them
14:32
@AJHenderson I keep meaning to build my own DMX controller.
considering the proper ones are insanely priced (at least in the UK)
but since I started as a software developer, I just haven't had time to hit up the festival circuits anymore
and I can basically build one with an Arduino Mega2560
which makes me sad
a sad panda?
@Polynomial um, you can get DMX controllers for single universes for under $100
14:34
@AJHenderson in the USA. in the UK they're expensive.
and I can basically build one for about £30.
@Polynomial ah, you guys really get screwed on the A/V gear in general
and learn more about how DMX works in the process.
but I don't feel bad for you guys because your laws make it so I can't record more than 29:59 of video on my DSLR without having to use a third party firmware hack
@AJHenderson I'm just your average metalhead. No special things for me :(
@AJHenderson all hardware. basically any price you'd pay for PC gear in the states, in dollars, pay the same plus maybe a bit more in pounds (exchange rate is ~$0.60 to £1)
so essentially double the price.
@AJHenderson wait, what? O_o
14:36
@Polynomial EU law classifies anything that records 30 minutes or more of video as a video capture device
I've never heard of a UK law that says you can't record >30 mins on... anything at all.
and charges a 15% tax
@Polynomial What would you use it for anyway?
ohhhh, bloody EU product laws.
so all the DSLR manufacturers gimp their products
and most don't bother making EU specific models
14:36
@Simon you can buy DMX lighting quite cheaply, it's the controllers that cost a fortune.
@Polynomial I see but I mean, would you host a show or something?
Or is it only for teh lulz?
@Simon Oh, not really. Just for fun.
kk
we're running a disco thing at EMF Camp so I've been looking into it
but it costs too much to get DMX stuff running in time
@Polynomial well, depends on what kind of lighting you want, you can also spend a bloody fortune on DMX controlled lighting
14:38
Oh @Polynomial, do you know @DavidFreitag since you have been missing for a bit?
DMX itself is pretty simple though
@AJHenderson oh definitely, but the basic stuff (RGB light arrays) are relatively cheap
He shares your interest in hardware stuff. :)
@TerryChia he's been around way longer than I've been missing ;]
@Polynomial ah yes, and then you get in to all the various DMX color mixing schemes
14:39
@Polynomial Ahh cool. I'm starting to lose track of who became a regular when.
RGB8, RGBA8, RGB16, RGBA16, etc, etc
yup, though I'm familiar with those concepts from driving lighting arrays myself, and from doing raw image processing stuff in software
R3G2B3 is a common 8-bit encoding.
and then you get in to the crazy number of proprietary DMX alternatives and things get all kinds of fun
I kinda don't want to even consider how mental the protocol must get for laser projectors
considering the number of different things they can do
yeah, I haven't had a chance to work with them
I'd like to work with them and pyrotechnics at some point
14:42
I know pyro is more complex than it seems
in terms of driving from DMX, at least
since often you can't just have a "fire" command
I'd hazard that lasers probably are still taking a basic x/y position protocol, it just has to update far faster than DMX does
you need to do stuff like priming or heating
@AJHenderson kinda, but with multi-laser or different physical front-ends it becomes complex.
@Polynomial and then some effects may take time to fire
@Polynomial yeah, but that's more the controller's job than the protocol
controllers for those things do things like exclusion zones and stuff too
kinda. the one I was looking at a while back has three separate prisms and four different lenses that can be swapped mechanically.
so that you can easily adapt a show to not shine the lasers in people's eyes
14:44
so you can get different warps and splits
which makes things a bit more complex, because it's not just a beam at an x/y
@Polynomial right, but those would work just like gobos and color wheels on robos
probably
it looked confusing :P
that's just a matter of having the proper personality for the fixture
and a controller that actually understands the personality
You guys remind me of that dude who made a choreography with the lights on his house.
@Polynomial it isn't that confusing, but then again, I've also been doing it at various levels for over 15 years and have worked on troubleshooting problems with guys that tour for a living with international artists, so I suppose "simple" is a relative term for me at this point
@Simon which one
lots of people do that
14:47
@AJHenderson the burden of experience ;]
my favorite one was working with a light tech for 4 hours before we realized the idiot of a light supplier had given us a cable with the polarity reversed on it
the robos were just freaking out doing bizarre things and I ended up noticing it seemed like the values were getting reversed
best movie scene ever:
and finally managed to find the documentation on the protocol they were using and identify the problem
needless to say, we didn't use that light supplier again
@Simon there is actually a guy who hooked up his christmas lights to the internet and let people remote control him. The first time he "did it" was actually a hoax, but then the second time around, he did it for real
@AJHenderson That's pretty damn cool.
