No, not good answer. Good diagnosis, terrible recommendation. All random numbers have a chance of collision, even ones generated using crypto-strength algorithms. Just use an atomic counter. All that the unpredictable IDs are doing are supporting the attitude that obscurity of the key is providing sufficient security. It's not, as the final paragraph points out. @Adnan I was going to say something about there being a better chance of him having a threeway with Scarlet Johansson and Jessica Alba than finding a collision with sufficiently large numbers generated with CSPRNGs but that would be impolite.
@Adnan, I had to change to another keyboard because the broken space bar was making tasking very difficult. The new one works nicely, but there's one thing I hate about it...
@Kisunminttu Blimey! :) There's almost not a key that I like on it ... I mean, it looks nice enough, but the layout ... oh, the layout! Insert and Delete keys in the bottom row? Return key tiny and wedged between all kinds of other navigation keys,... yet there's room for a full numeric keypad. Who designed this?
@TildalWave Clas Ohlson, so it's not exactly a "designed" keyboard... My standard keyboard is a Razer BlackWidow, but the space bar is giving me trouble.
For me, the best keyboards are still those that use mechanical switches, preferably Cherry MX, brown or black ones. And US layout with big Return key. I've tried so many others that I'm done with the rest.
@RоryMcCune plus the click switch keys need to be pressed in deeper, I actually like those half-depressed keys (or how they're called?) because I find them faster to type on
@FEichinger The switches are the same but the key is designed so that it's never in a 100% released position. They kinda feel like more tactile version of laptop keys, but not necessarily "low profile". You still know exactly when the key was pressed and when it wasn't.
@Codes @Thomas (or anybody else) Self-sanity check: Isn't high quality randomness (CSPRNG-grade, high entropy seed, 128-bit output) a way to come very close to uniqueness? In other words: Due the unlikelihood of collisions, practically speaking, can securely randomly generated 128-bit keys used as unique identifiers?

@Lamia Yeah, she is. She's been getting quite good at pronunciation in the last couple of months. Now she can say 5, 7, and sometimes even 3 (you know, the letters not the numbers).

Ah, funny anecdote about that. I've been to so many Arab countries, and other than in Saudi Arabia, I've yet to see a woman wearing a burka. I've only seen them in European countries like Germany and France.
