That's a big jump

the priv to edit has always been 2k for as long as I've been here
the notification icon is what was switched

replaced an 8-line shell script with the equivalent 70-line python program. Yay for "proper" programming languages.
02:05
@tylerl Heh. Complete with good OO practices?
Also, I just snagged Eureka! Yay!
But dammit! It's on mSO...
@TerryChia do be fair, my bash-fu is pretty strong.
here's one of the lines in it, for example:
> tar -zcC dir/ . | { perl -e 'use MIME::Base64 qw(encode_base64);$/=undef;print encode_base64(<>);'; }
@tylerl Are you trying to win code golf or something? ;)
which, as you can obviously tell, changes to dir/, tar-gzips the current directory, then base64-encodes the output
if you have a simpler way to do that in bash, i'm all ears.
@tylerl 1 line.... python good-name-for-this-script.py
@TerryChia right... you mean the one that I just wrote? I actually did it so that I could modify the contents of the generated tgz file on-the-fly as I was creating the archive

My Anonymity question has hit the supercollider.

Q: Can anonymizing techniques make you less anonymous?

tylerlThere's a recent report in the news of a Harvard student who emailed in a bomb threat so as to postpone year-end exams. According to the report, he carefully covered his tracks using the best technology he knew about: he used a throw-away email account, and only accessed it over TOR. It turns o...

Granted it's the weekend, which means less-than-stellar performance.
But still, it'll be an interesting test case for the relative effect that the list of popular questions has over the weekend versus during the work week.
05:14
@Rory I was wondering if you could help me with an AVP-ish question. I would ask in their chat, but it looks pretty well dead. I'm not sure it's really right for the site anyway.
I need to know what the difference is (if any) between the types of 3.5mm/2.5mm jacks/plugs. Particularly, I need to connect a stereo headset/mic made for a 3.5mm plug to an input made for 2.5mm and I need to know what I need to know to make sure I get the right adapter.
Is there anything specific I need to look for to make sure the adapter/cable supports stereo output, and the mic input?
Here's a pic of the 3.5mm cable that came with it.
For me, this is actually more related to gaming than AVP - I'm trying to hook my PULSE Elite headset into an Xbox 360 controller.
Based on Wikipedia, it looks like I'm looking for a 3.5mm TRRS Female to 2.5mm TRRS male adapter, or a similar male-male cable.
(If you could point me to such a thing available for shipping to U.S. that would be awesome. Searching seems tricky.)
05:46
@Iszi check digikey. at the least you should be able to buy the bits and solder it yourself
@tylerl That requires equipment and finesse - neither of which I possess.
Filtering functions there don't wanna play nice with me. I try to apply filter for 3.5mm Jack as first connector and it tells me there aren't any despite their obvious presence in the unfiltered list.
06:16
Ack. Further research is disappointing. Even if I do get an adapter, the controller is only used for voice chat anyway - no game audio. I'm starting to think about hacking together some sort of hybrid solution - a headphone/mic splitter cable with the mic feed going to the controller and the headphone link going to the TV. At that point, I'm thinking I almost may as well just go shopping at Turtle Beach - it'll be a hell of a lot more expensive, but a hell of a lot less hassle.

Then again, I don't think anybody should be surprised
09:18
@Iszi dealextreme?
@LucasKauffman The best site to buy inexpensive shit in the whole universe
@Adnan rory already linked that one --->
@LucasKauffman Damn it! I have the 150% zoom settings for chat.stackexchange.com. Only 4 starred messages appear.
> The NSA declined to comment
hahaha what did they expect?
If I don't go to work on Monday, I'd have a 6-day weekend. Hmmm.
Tough choice
09:24
What do you mean 6 day weekend? You work today?
ah... sorry
bad maths
@TildalWave Today, Sunday, Monday (work day), Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Oh, if I don't go to work on Friday either.. :O
most here just took the few work days during the next week off so it's technically 9 days off
@TildalWave That's what I was thinking about
However, I guess I think I'd get bored after 3 days
Depends how much work you have and how much you like to work I guess. For me, 9 days off is a bit of a disruption to my work schedule, so I'll just have 2 days off
plus weekends of course
it's new years anyway in less than 2 weeks
@TildalWave Yeah, I think that's what I'll be doing as well

Oy! Nothing much... SE is pretty dead
NASA is prepping for EVA to replace that failed Pump Module
If you guys are bored, the IETF CFRG mailing list has some funny drama going on right now. :P
12:30
@AviD 2 more days to write an answer if you want the bounty...

1 hour later…
13:35
Woah, Bridge is acting up again.
@TerryChia Yup, it's fun in there :D
@Adnan So, what exactly happened?
@TildalWave as well since you seem to be involved somehow. :P
@TerryChia That dude walked in and said "wassup motherfuckers"
Conversion evolved from there.
@Adnan Ah, that would do it.
Ok, looking at the transcript..... that escalated real quick.
@Adnan Adding oil to fire now are we?
@TerryChia I like oil
Especially olive oil
Especially when it's extra virgin
13:43
@TerryChia just kids trying to be amusing
@TildalWave You sound like @RoryAlsop... "Get off my lawn!"
@TerryChia neah, it's not even my lawn, what do I care I only had 2 minutes to spare and thought to see who's the joker
@TildalWave Hehe. Well, it doesn't interest me so I'm gonna leave the room.
if it was my lawn tho... well, I'd be holding two smoking barrels now
@TerryChia Oh I did that long ago
Anyone here know anything on tire tech in general, and the one used on Curiosity rover? I have a question for you on SEx.SE ;)
(if you're bored)
Ah! I'm having so much fun there!
14:00
@Adnan Where? You're still in the Arqade chat?
@TildalWave Yup, but now I'm enjoying my beer and waiting to see what will happen next
@Adnan well that guy obviously has some issues, but frankly I couldn't care less
it's just bike shed fodder
The Bear is here! Long live The Bear!
@TildalWave I don't know, I have an hour with nothing to do, it'd be fun to ruin the psyche of some poor person.
All hail the ale!
14:04
@ThomasPornin Any opinions on Dragonfly the PAKE scheme?
@TerryChia I have not looked closely at it yet.
@ThomasPornin Ahh. I'm following the fuss on the IETF mailing list. Pretty funny stuff. :P
From a cursory look, I think that the tricky point would be to prove that an active attacker cannot extract from some algorithm runs enough to make an offline dictionary attack.
E.g. the password-based value PWE is such a value.
The CDH assumption is that from (G,aG,bG) you cannot compute abG, but G itself is a juicy target for the attacker, and it is not "protected" by the CDH.
@ThomasPornin Well, that completely went over my head. :P
AFAIK there isn't much demand for PAKE schemes in TLS is there? I wonder why they are trying so hard to push another through.
@TerryChia PAKE scheme are not compatible with usual server-side storage of passwords as pbcrypt/PBKDF2 output.
14:16
@TerryChia linky?
That's reason enough to prevent wide adoption.
@TildalWave Well, the drama really starts here. ietf.org/mail-archive/web/cfrg/current/msg03554.html
But there are some funny discussions here. ietf.org/mail-archive/web/cfrg/current/msg03545.html
People tend to believe that TLS-SRP is not widely implemented because people don't like SRP, and that a new algorithm would magically trigger wide adoption, but I think they are sorely mistaken.
@TerryChia oh, so co-chair is accused of endorsing dragonfly for no apparent reason
@Iszi Typically for stereo jacks you have a tip and two rings (L, R and ground) That jack has a third ring, which could be a separate ground, power or a communication link. You'd need to find out exactly what...
If it is a headset with a mic then one of the rings will probably be for mono mic
14:25
@RoryAlsop Anything to add re my comment to the first answer? Couldn't silicon tiles work? They should absorb shock better and protect from spikier rocks somewhat, while still not adding to weight that much. And if some fall off, so be it, it'd still be better than bare metal wheel skin. It just seems odd, the rover is what, 1 ton?
@TildalWave I'm not sure why a silicon tile would be better than an aluminium skin
the wheels were designed for the projected mission lifespan, and have shown they are more than up to the job
@RoryAlsop to absorb shock and protect from sharp rocks denting the wheels
@RoryAlsop What's the mission lifespan actually? I must admit I didn't even check :)
(we needed new questions)
it was 2 years
and curiosity has been going how long now?
@TildalWave hahahqahaha - fair enough
I guess that's 3 years so far, or thereabouts
Could be, I'll check after lunch :) Still trying to think of more questions tho, sometimes it's worth artificially increasing traffic like that, I've noticed that people tend to be more lazy to ask questions than answer them. Well, I had myself as a sole subject of my observations, so this is not scientific research :)
@TildalWave No - I think you are right. As we mentioned, this part of December is a struggle to gain activity. The hat stuff did boost a few things - votes, new questions etc, but for the next 8 days or so, popping in some questions just helps.
Using @Adnan's craptrain expertise, you could probably work out a question that fits the criteria and goes stratospheric (if not quite to orbit...)
14:41
@RoryAlsop I'm not good at asking questions that would reptrain at all. The best one so far is the "ATM skimmers" one here on Sec.SE
oh... todo: award the bounty, collect the hat!
@TildalWave that's an easy one to do - in fact I think I have a couple of bounties I need to complete
@RoryAlsop Now I'm just trying to remember if I have @Adnan on LinkedIn so I can go endorse him for craptrain expertise (although after this week I'd need to endorse you too :op)
@RоryMcCune hahahahaha - thanks
It's still on the supercollider!
@RоryMcCune :|
@RоryMcCune had a good night out with the team - met up with some of your old colleagues (although by the time we met in the club, both teams had suffered significant attrition)
14:46
hmm how can I rename craptrain expertise in a Linkedin friendly way...
@RoryAlsop cool yeah didn't I see that jennifer graham ended up in the same place..
@Adnan what that's a marketable skill that is..
15:20
You know what's the worst with craptrains? They tend to bring in new "experts" :|
eventually, they'll crawl out of their caves
15:46

herro
@LucasKauffman Awight
@RоryMcCune What's up mr McCune?
@LucasKauffman not too much. finished up for the year, had a nice walk today, looking at metal detectors to find stuff in our garden and wireless outdoor webcams to do deer/fox/pine marten spotting :)
hows tricks with you?
@RоryMcCune (spy gear...shhhhh)
@RoryAlsop oh yeah that perhaps does look like an interesting combo :)
16:25
@TerryChia - reviewed, made very minor edit to add a link to your question and scheduled for midday Monday. No point publishing it now, no one visits over the weekend
@RoryAlsop Cheers :)
@RоryMcCune just chilling, had a family lunch and now just having a look at the new aviation stackexchange
WT actual F , who knew this was a product...
@RоryMcCune That's ideal to potty train @simon :O
@RоryMcCune woah
there is literally no need
16:38
@RoryAlsop prepare for some rep, added a bounty to one of your answers
@RоryMcCune I did, and there's some controversy surrounding it too, at least I saw it on Twitter... I didn't bother reading what about tho
@TildalWave heh I just saw it on the Amazon front page as "things people are shopping for now.."
@RоryMcCune it's in the "stupid gift" price range ;)
'iPotty' named worst toy of the year
> "Children should be aware of the cues in their bodies as they learn. This toy takes this social/emotional focus out of the process and substitutes the hypnotism of a screen,” she said.
can't say I don't agree
yeah it does seem a bit dodgy, to put it mildly..
...waiting for the adult-size version :) iCrapper? LOL
17:39
@LucasKauffman OOOH - TA
@TildalWave done. Thanks
@RoryAlsop sure, no problem & thanks ;)
you did all the hard work, I just reported it LOL
BTW when you nuke a user, can you select for all the user's posts to be nuked at the same time? (I never had to do it... yet)
@TildalWave Destroy nukes everything they have ever done
Used where they have only posted spam
@RoryAlsop Excellent! Now I can't wait to use it hehe
18:29
LOL this is incredible, and they even add their logo to it, as if there's something to be proud about:
when I wanted to open onswipe.com/thedailygalaxy
18:46
@TildalWave ok, ok, if you insist so much, I won't visit your site
@Gilles it's not my site darnit! :P
or did you mean that could be one of possible replies?
in other news ... I got my sockpuppet hat, I think it really suits me :)
they should make the "Jose jalapeno on a stick" tho
that'd be too cool "hat" :)

@RoryAlsop thanks for the new face!
@AviD :-)
I aim to pleasure
very interesting, and seems spot on - even though its on cracked cracked.com/blog/…
I really like their recent string of "real world" articles, ala things you didnt know about a specific profession.
like the one about burger flippers, or homeless, or prostitutes... or this one about white hat hackers
> They're warrior monks, but with more Cheetos stains.
21:28
@AviD that is brilliant. I'm going to now go tweet it onwards
I have to admit, security at Ben Gurion made me feel security staff were assessing me, whereas TSA and even UK airport security just annoy me as almost nothing they do secures me or my fellow passengers
@RoryAlsop and they steal your drinks!
I loved the tip about how to get stuff back from the TSA. I am SO using that next time.
@LucasKauffman that always annoys me
@LucasKauffman stop wearing my face!
I KEEL YOUUU
I know in Belgium if you enter the country they will actually give you a receipt of the object you brought in which was illegal, and return it to you once you leave the country
@AviD we're like family
@AviD except I'm the fuzzy one
21:33
@LucasKauffman really? I'm not sure if that is awesome or thoughtless.
ah wait, you're talking about items that are illegal to bring into the country?
as opposed to "dangerous" items forbidden on the plane.
@LucasKauffman Boba Llama!
@LucasKauffman you havent met me
@AviD well I highly doubt they will return an AK47
@AviD I can just feel we are meant to be together, forever.
forever
21:35
@LucasKauffman but its myyyyy ak47! I decorated it and everything!
@LucasKauffman haha, nice @Simon impression!
2
@AviD when I was still doing cargo at Brussels airport they actually confiscated a golden AK once :P
@RoryAlsop all though I feel more like Jar Jar bings
@LucasKauffman meesa no welcome Jar Jar to Sec.SE
@RoryAlsop :O
I got two new hats
I like this one
@LucasKauffman you got the hats hat
hats hat suits drama llama
@RoryAlsop exactly
21:38
@RoryAlsop do ex-mods get the mods hat too?
cuz @ThomasPornin has the mods hat for ex-modding on crypto.
@RoryAlsop I'm fabulous!
@Gilles see, thats what I said!
thank god I didn't play the system.
backs away slowly
I warned you all!
@LucasKauffman hahaha, excellent. Save that for January 6, or whenever winterbash ends.
22:24
bored
board
zzzzz
2x4
back of your head.
Not so boring anymore, is it?? IS IT??
@LucasKauffman cute
23:11
@Lucas - you know of course that he is Australian and not Scottish...?
@RoryAlsop SCOOOOOTTLAAAAAAND!!!!
Happy Winter Solstice!
23:32
To me, the middle of winter. Why does Google say today is the first day of winter.
@RoryAlsop probably something to do with groundhogs.
@RoryAlsop wait, since we're near the end of the year, and winter in Scotland is the whole year long, are you near the end of winter....?
Hahahaha - percentage-wise, maybe
