@TildalWave and also 123 years (and a couple of months) since the first powered flight
@ThomasPornin Yes? Let me guess, there was some fair in Paris ...
It looks like lots of people managed heavier than air powered flight before the Wright brothers.
@TildalWave Mmh, it would be tricky to try flying within Paris. A much crowded environment.
The flight I allude to was in Tournan-en-Brie, a small town which is distant from Paris by a few dozens of kilometers. Took place on October 9th, 1890.
@ThomasPornin Are you talking about Ader?
@ScottPack Yes.
19:12
There seems to be some disagreement on whether his claims are truthful.
In fact there have been lots of "almost-plane" air vehicles in those years.
@ThomasPornin Well, it's in France :) I wasn't that far off
I think it's pretty obvious that, no matter who it was, the Wright brother's were most certainly not the first. They just clearly got the most long term press.
Which one was the first "true" plane is quite arbitrary. Americans tend to say that the Wright vehicle was the first true plane, on the ground that the Wright brothers were American, which, as arbitrary reasons go, is no more preposterous than any other.
I'm not talking about what was a true plane or not, but whether or not his flight actually happened.
At least, if I'm reading the Intarwebs right.
19:14
@ScottPack Apparently the October 9th flight is considered genuine but an ulterior attempt (which went twice further) remains "unproven".
I think it's painfully obvious that the Wright brother's were not the first.
it's still a nice milestone, and I thought since the Aviation proposal is now 100% committed it would be cool if it launched today
@ThomasPornin Ah, ok.
@TildalWave ooh I like aviation
@TildalWave link me
@LucasKauffman It's not in beta yet... that's why I'm pushing that it would be today, since it's 110 years since the Wright bros flight
it's 100% committed tho
19:18
@TildalWave I could still commit so I can get in on the beta
@LucasKauffman ah, didn't know that's possible. Cool
commit pls

Beer

Proposed Q&A site for beer aficionados and collectors

Currently in commitment.

@LucasKauffman Anna Lear said it's taking off today :)
@TildalWave I c what u did there
@LucasKauffman Isn't there a more general alcoholic beverages and/or liquor proposal?
19:22
@Iszi yea
105
Alcoholic Beverages

Proposed Q&A site for bar staff, connoisseurs, cocktail mixologists, wine tasters, lager lovers, stout sippers, and beverage beginners to learn about the preparation and appreciation of alcoholic beverages

Currently in definition.

it needs 10 more questions with a score of 10 or more
@LucasKauffman I'd sooner propose a merge.
@Iszi they did I think
That said, if Beer is already in commitment, them maybe the merge direction needs to go AB->Beer.
(Even though, technically, the resulting site would be AB)
There was also a Whiskey proposal.
It makes sense that they all be merged under AB
@LucasKauffman dang I have commitment problems again
19:26
agreed
@TildalWave that's what your wife said
I'm meant to answer this question

Q: How does SSH defend against keystroke-timing attacks?

Ram RachumThis paper: https://www.usenix.org/legacy/events/sec01/full_papers/song/song.pdf Explains how SSH can be compromised by analyzing the timing of the keystrokes to guess what the user is typing. It's about 12 years old. I heard that this attack vector was solved in SSH long ago by sending keyst...

@ScottPack Was
@Iszi Kind of my point.
@ScottPack don't make me flag you, using such profanities!
19:30
If the current state of the proposals is any indicator, it looks like AB might become like Programming Puzzles. Sure, the site technically accepts all sorts of programming challenges. But over 70% of the questions are .
@RoryMcCune WrongRory started it!
@ScottPack well he's a bad @Rory then! I shudder thinking of the S.word
@RoryMcCune Haha, you just pinged yourself.
@Iszi so I get a hat for that .. right?
@RoryMcCune BRB. I'm gonna make one for you on my porcelain workbench. ;-)
19:32
woo custom hats!
wot
Oh, crap. I just remembered I mic'd up some lunch like three hours ago and just left it there.
This is why I hate bringing a lunch to eat in the office.
How the fuck do you people just forget to eat?
Do you also forget to go to the bathroom and piss yourself?
@Simon It's called we're busy... doing this thing called "work".
@Simon Quite nearly, sometimes. Which reminds me...
@Simon I do that when I work on client sites, get into the run of things (also dislike being on site so want it over with)
19:34
And by "work" he means walking around with a backpack getting stopped by security.
"Someone from Space Exploration Stack Exchange looked at your profile": is there some kind of LinkedIn-SE agreement ?
@ThomasPornin say what now?
@ThomasPornin I think it has to do with referers
@ScottPack I received an email from LinkedIn with that subject.
Interesting.
19:35
@RoryMcCune Disliking it would explain it.
@ThomasPornin Oh, I know. Must be TildalWave
Or someone who has "Space Exploration Stack Exchange" listed in the job field or something
@ManishEarth Most probably, but it still requires something on the LinkedIn side to convert the referer (an URL) into a human-readable name ("Space Exploration Stack Exchange")
QUESTION BY A LLAMA ANSWERED BY A LLAMA (and a bear)
@ThomasPornin page title
@LucasKauffman bear eats llama
@ManishEarth Huh? No, I don't list SE under ""jobs"... must have been someone else. Plus, if it was me he'd see me listed, not "someone from..."
19:36
@TildalWave ah
LinkedIn is creepy
@ManishEarth Our bear is a vegetarian
I have a co-mod who has no traces of his real identity on SE aside from his registered email, which is hidden
The PYMK on LinkedIn suggested connecting with him
A mini-@kalina
@ManishEarth does that group include anyone besides @TildalWave?
Might as well have said "An Icons expert has viewed your profile".
4
I later figured out that it had to do with me connecting LinkedIn and GMail, and also receiving a mod mail in which the CM had forgotten to bcc
@AviD When LinkedIn says "someone from", usually they mean a job
19:40
@ManishEarth or school, or organization, or....
@AviD LOL but I'll repeat, I don't list SE in jobs. We can check that, I'll go open your profile there (reluctantly) and you tell me what it says then.
@TildalWave but yeah, you do have it listed. Newb.
> Moderator Pro Tempore at Space Exploration Stack Exchange
@AviD I do? Not in "jobs"
"Experience".
19:42
Newb+Nurd=Nwurd
heh, "Location: The Internet" <- luvvit!
@ManishEarth I like it.
@AviD Yes that but it's not in jobs or organisations ... and it's not primary at anything it's just listed, it shouldn't use that one for anything. Unless I don't get it, which in case of LinkedIn is a possibility
@TildalWave you should also link the company name to SEI, makes it cooler.
@AviD SEI?
19:44
@TildalWave you have anonymity set to medium, right? It randomly picks one of your current positions to display to others.
@TildalWave Stack Exchange, Inc. The corporate entity behind all thes *.se sites....
@AviD it shouldn't if I'm connected with the person
and the meta.*.se sites, for that matter, since wildcards only go one level.
@TildalWave no, it depends on your settings.
hang on...
@AviD OK I just opened your profile, tell me what you see
you should see my mugshot no?
or... my icon
since that's what I'm apparently an expert in
:P
@TildalWave Hmm. yes, you are named.
@AviD there, I rest my case
19:46
go to Account & Settings -> Select what others see when you've viewed their profile
whats that say?
@AviD Your name and headline (Recommended)
and if I chose the more anonymous option, it'd say "Someone in the Computer Software industry from Slovenia"
@AviD can you remove the room after reading?
@TildalWave no, that picks randomly from your current positions.
@TildalWave Which is pretty specific since that's just you, right?
but its moo anyway, if you picked full headline.
19:50
@ScottPack hehe sometimes it feels that way yup :)
@LucasKauffman oh, and meh. Not a big deal, dont get worked up about it.
@AviD anyway, I have the default selected, so you see my beautiful self represented by an icon of a bookworm :P
which I COULD update I guess
for the caveman Santa one
done... now enough with LinkedIn already!
that's right! Now, help me set up my damn print server!
What about it? I mean... how on Earth can we help you? You have a server and a printer, right? :D
@TildalWave if only it were that simple....
hang on, shjopping is here
19:59
@AviD usually isn't, it actually takes some config work :P what server are you running?
@RoryMcCune heh, classic.
@TildalWave so, its like this. I set up a WinServer 2012 R2 with the Print Server role. Note that this is a virtual machine, under Hyper-V. I attached the USB printer to the Hyper-V host. Now, the problem is - Hyper-V doesnt do USB pass-through (which I just discovered)....
@AviD I believe you want @ScottPack for that, I just end up swearing a lot with such setups
so, now, I think what I need to do is set up the printer on the Hyper-V host (NOT happy...) and share it out JUST to the print server. From the server, I would need to attach to that printer, and then share it out to the rest of the network. Except that its not exactly working right....
@TildalWave nah, he'll just tell me to "upgrade" to Linux.
That all sounds like Windows garbage.
I mean, it's just a print server how hard can it be? But still.
I DONT want to do the print processing on the hyper-v host, and I DONT want to have all the other machines and users connecting to my hyper-v host.
20:20
yeah no. HyperV is your hypervisor.
@ScottPack honestly? I dont have a lot of experience in this area, I'm a softwares guy.
That means VMs and storage
Printers are trivial. If they work.
If they don't then you better go stock up on virgins and goats.
@ScottPack ayup. And I got those parts all down pat, only running into trouble with the printer / print server. Not sure where the problem lies.
@ScottPack well, the printer was working, if wired directly to e.g. my laptop.
for that matter, I was able to share from the host to the PS guest, and print from there. For some reason, I was not able to print from the host....
@AviD funny you should say that and then ask me about it, I'm a dev I just write the darn thing I don't use it :P
also not been able to figure out sharing out a shared remote printer.
@TildalWave heh, didnt ask you specifically....
20:24
@AviD So... no ethernet adapter on the printer itself, I take it?
@Iszi no :-(
Ah sorry then ;) I'd try for sure, but I don't like to fiddle with printers in general let alone doing it the long way around like this. If I need to print a lot I just send it to the office and collect the next day :)
@AviD See, this could have been so easy if you'd just gotten it right in procurement.
AND the USB cable is juuuust long enough to reach....
@TildalWave heh, yeah, neither do I - which is part of the reason I'm trying to set this up, so I dont have to mess around with them all the time!
@Iszi hahaha
well, I've had the printer for a few years... long before I thought about this whole home virtualization thing.
2013-12-17: I'm a nurd.
20:26
@Simon a real nurd would have written that in Stardate.
@AviD A CS nurd would have typed it exactly like I did.
@AviD Or UNIX time.
@AviD Printers are just terrible things.
@Iszi You win.
I'm starting to enjoy coffee.
Fuck.
@Simon Your mom let's you have that? Doesn't she know it'll stunt your growth?
20:28
@Iszi That's why she's letting me have it.
Because you can't get much more stunted than being Canadian?
3
:(
fu starrers
@ScottPack Oh, good. 'Cause everything I was coming up with was in his favor and generally trending towards TWSS.
@Iszi Don't worry kiddo. I've got this.
@ScottPack "Kiddo"? I'm what, a whole year younger than you?
20:32
That makes you a kiddo.
@Iszi Or two.
@Simon No, that makes me eligible to be yo daddy - and don't you forget it.
@Iszi 31-13 = 18.
You were kind of young.
@Simon Had my firstborn at 21. Not that far off.
Dayum.
That's like if I had a kid last year.
What a lulz.
I'm not done being silly yet, I can't have a kid now.
20:37
well, shucks. I guess Imma have to brave the wilde jungles of Server Fault, and put up my query for mocking, ridicule, and violence.
@Simon pshaw. Kids help keep me silly.
@AviD There's a dude called Dan there, watch out for him.
@AviD Describe your problem well, document what you've done, and you should be fine.
@AviD I strongly believe that my silliness is stronger than yours.
@AviD Or just, y'know, buy a new printer.
@ScottPack but I am not a "professional sysadmin"....
20:38
Worst of all don't let on that you're a developer or imply this might be for a home environment.
@ScottPack When did you become an optimist?
@Iszi meh, the printer is fine. It's just my crazy ideas for how to set up the network.
Because while the community as a whole is pretty reasonable there are a few douchweasels who will piss in your mouth before you get a chance to fully open it.
And some of then recently won mod election.
@ScottPack its not for home, its my office / lab environment.
@ScottPack I'm totally running over to the Comms Room to c&p that.
20:39
Connected to the home, sure, and some of that is for dev, but.... hmm... I'm screwed.
@ScottPack Dayum.
@Iszi Have at it. I've at least implied it, though I don't know that I've said it.
Ah, who am I kidding. No I'm not.
@ScottPack that.... is a truly disgusting image.
One of them is just cranky and quick to anger. The other one is a self-righteous asshole and one was always one of the loudest people ruining the site's image. It really annoyed me when that one ran under a platform of being reasonable and open minded.
20:41
@ScottPack how "recently"?
@AviD Most recently.
That narrows it down quite a bit.
@ScottPack Were you nominated?
I thought some of the older mods were of the difficult variety.
haha, Evan was nominated???
at least HE didnt win.
@AviD Two of them grew to be overly cranky, but they recognized it and stepped down. All together good guys but they just got fed up with the drudgery of it all.
20:43
@ScottPack Heard that.
damn, I hate that phrase.
Which one?
@ScottPack Yo, when I ask you a fucking question, YOU ANSWER.
Kids these days, jeeze.
@Simon Eh?
@ScottPack Were you nominated in the mod election?
@Simon go look yourself.
20:45
@Simon Oh, you got told!
@AviD I don't even know what a mod election looks like, no damn idea where I can check that.
@Iszi Refer to the post that you flagged yesterday.
@Simon try, I'm sure a bright young lad like yourself could find it.
@Simon /election on any SE site.
@AviD Sure or I can just not to do it and keep working.
@Iszi Merci 'el gros.
pssst @Iszi, dya think he'll pick up on the sarcasm?
20:46
Just like nearly every other hidden UI around here.
@AviD Hard to tell around here.
How the fuck did you not win, Mr. Pack?
Give this man a damn diamond.
The diamond I'd give him would be on a ring though.
@AviD See, he's too busy obsessing over @ScottPack to care.
good point.
seriously though, I completely agree with @Simon about that.
I DON'T GET IT
Anyone else notice hats are kinda broken in chat?
20:49
It's about time @ScottPack becomes a mod someplace.
@AviD SOMEONE AGREES WITH ME
2013-12-17 is a great day.
Like, when your avatar goes up a size, the hat kinda stays the same size and position - but now it's too small and is in the upper-right corner?
@Iszi where? seem fine to me
@TildalWave See @Simon next to his "Give the man a diamond" rant.
@Iszi I don't see anything wrong... could be the browser?
20:50
@Simon Oh, sorry. This was in the background and I had muted the sound. Yeah, I was.
@Iszi Nope, I see it OK
@Iszi Weird, it's fine on my browser.
@Iszi Your browser sucks.
CTRL+F5 fixed. Odd.
20:51
@Simon To be fair, my biggest reason for signing up originally was to get the swag bundle.
@Iszi hit refresh.
18 secs ago, by Iszi
CTRL+F5 fixed. Odd.
@ThomasPornin Like your... oh, wait. No. Not gonna mess with Momma Bear.
@ScottPack I'm sure you'd be a great mod too though, no homo.
@ScottPack oo yeah, those are awesome. though they dont do cards anymore, but the hats are fantastic.
38 secs ago, by AviD
@Iszi hit refresh.
20:52
@Simon I wouldn't have minded losing to really anyone except those guys, though. I was a bit annoyed with that.
@AviD I like the StackExchange t-shirts. They make for great undershirts.
@ScottPack well, Evan would have been arguably worse.
Unless you're in a parody.
I want an InfoSec t-shirt :(
I heard we don't get site-specific swag anymore, though? That sucks.
@AviD Oh, yes him definitely would have been. Though he was completely discounted.
@Simon I have one.
@Iszi no, we do
20:53
@Iszi Is that true? Life is not worth living anymore.
@ManishEarth I didn't.
@ScottPack Lucky!
@ScottPack I actually got one shirt that was a couple sizes too small for me, finally it worked for me as a tshirt.
No site specific mod business cards
@Iszi for?
@ManishEarth Got a Sec.SE shirt for the top users swag pack, but a standard SE shirt when I ran for mod.
20:53
@Iszi when you run for mod you get to choose
@Iszi I asked about the Travel towel recently, I was told it would happen in 6-8 weeks designers
@Iszi yeah, those are awesome!
I've also given out dozens of shirts at conferences....
@ManishEarth Pretty sure I didn't - or, if I did, it was just the color.
@AviD Which - Sec.SE, or SE? I like both.
20:54
@Iszi yeah, same here. Though that might have changed since.
Could stand to go tagless, though.
@Iszi both. I've given out sec.se at confs.
@Iszi some of them are....
All my regular undershirts are tagless, so any non-tagless t-shirts just annoy me a bit these days.
@ScottPack For some reason I remember the Michael Hampton dude as a douche, can't tell why though.
@Iszi When you go to 100k, you are given the choice only for "normal" SE stuff, nothing site-specific.
20:55
change of hats ...
hmmm there's some delay here
@AviD Gotta get you guys to a conf down here some time.
@ThomasPornin You would have experience in that, several times over, wouldn't you?
@TildalWave CTRL+F5
now I'm Indy :)
@Iszi love to! I'd be glad to speak at any conf that pays my travel...
@Iszi LOL :))
@Simon He is.
20:56
@ThomasPornin Can I buy one of your t-shirts, please?
signed?
@Simon He's pretty smart, but yeah.
I could shovel your driveway too.
Signed would be awesome.
I'm not sure if I'd like the new Sec.SE logo on a shirt. The banner looked a lot more fitting when it was smaller.
@ScottPack Smart people are often dickheads.
20:57
@Simon if you say anything about getting @ScottPack to wear it for you, I swear to god I am going to kick you.
@AviD Now that you mention it...
@Simon I'm not.
@AviD You're the biggest ducking fickhead.
@Simon only to those that ain't :P
This is a compliment, don't forget it.
20:58
@Simon you need to rearrange some of those words, there.
@TildalWave Meh, I think you have a point.
@AviD <3
There, edited.
lolwat?
:D
@Simon My T-shirts are not for sale, although this is, as many other things, a question of price.
I want to drink a beer but I can't
20:59
@ThomasPornin I could give you like 5$.
@Simon I know I have. I'm Indy now, I'm the guy that can run comfortably with a football size ball of gold in hands
