@Adnan We are not Chinese sweatshop workers breaking captchas for you dammit!
Well, according to Yahoo it's not
or the 4th might be an "n", no?
@Adnan It might be AJHRY
8yHJF2pcn
Anyone disagrees?
@Adnan Looks like it.
15:02
Hahahahaheehehehe!!!
WRONG!!!
WTF!!!
8yHJF2por|
@Adnan I guess the 8 could be an S?
Or the c could be an o.
@Adnan I told you Yahoo was a waste of time.
8 could be &
@paste For this particular case, I disagree. But who knows?
15:10
Okay, after captcha #17. I did it!
Long day. 4 hrs diving so far and 4 more to go. ..
@RoryAlsop Diving sounds fun.
Well be back at proper computer soon. Will actually be able to see mod flags properly. Can't wait:-)
@RoryAlsop M6?
15:19
Driving
Blooming mobile devices and auto complete
Someone brought in this bread this morning. The only way i can explain it is, it's like pepperjack bread. It has jalapenos and roasted red peppers in it, delicious.
15:43
@rorym M1 - nearly at Scotch corner now
@David sounds awesome
@RoryAlsop not too long till you're back in a proper country then!
@RoryAlsop It's pretty tasty, even better a bit toasted with some butter.
@rorym - I can tell, the temp has dropped six degrees and the sun has gone away. I see I need to rebuild some portals - Sainsburys went despite me remote charging it.
@RoryAlsop yeah I was in town this morning and it had all gone blue! Burned all my bursters on one of them but as a lowely L3 it wasn't enough to have much impact!

Q: Encrypt/Decrypt string in .NET

NotDanCan someone give me the code to Encrypt and Decrypt a string in C#?

Why can't we have nice crypto APIs
@CodesInChaos Because of Obama
@Adnan Vote for change.
17:26
@CodesInChaos yeech indeed
I downvoted based on your comments without checking them thoroughly, I hope I can trust you

est une vertue
I put half the blame of microsoft for creating APIs that are almost impossible to use correctly, unless you really know what you're doing
@Simon est une verrue ? est une vergue ?
@Gilles Une vertue!!!!
@Simon une vertu
17:34
@Gilles I knew I spelt that wrong, god damn it.
@CodesInChaos You can put the other half of the blame on people who think in terms of "I want the string to be 'encrypted' because then the string will be 'secure'".
someone did propose rot10
I'm sure people will mess up key management. But at least I won't see them doing it on SO.
But those IV and padding oracle things catch even people with properly secret keys
Some code I wrote two or three years ago is suffering from those
@Gilles Rot10 is insecure, everybody knows that. You must use Rot26
17:45
@Simon Are you getting capped today as well?
@Adnan Nah, just +50 so far.
@Ammar So, aren't you planning to post a good answer on Stackoverflow so you can start chatting here?
@Adnan actually I can chat here :))
@AmmarM.Zerouk What the krastavas?!
hello guys, I'm new here
17:47
How?
Oi oi oi, you have 32 rep network-wide
@Simon Say hi to the guy, god damn it!
WHAT
Hi new guy!
@Ammar Where did you get that fedora? I must say you're pulling it off quite well.
Fedora and pulling it off in the same sentence?
@Adnan no, that's just as bad, you have to use a prime number
@Adnan stackexchange gives you 1 rep point for each website you sign up for!
17:54
@AmmarM.Zerouk Yeah, I never knew that counted towards the chatting privilege.
@AmmarM.Zerouk and after you get 200 points on one site, you get a +100 bonus on each site
@Adnan if you join all the sites, that's almost 10k from the association bonus alone
that loophole's been bug reported a long time ago
@Gilles Hmm... that doesn't sound so bad.
ah, no, it's been fixed now
13
A: Should the account association bonuses be excluded when calculating totals for chat?

Marc GravellYour point is noted. We are going to try a slightly different rep formula on chat, to see how it pans out... Getting a true "is this 100 from the rep-bonus" on every site is... somewhat complicated, and probably unnecessarily subtle. Our thought now is basically: once you start getting rep above ...

Btw, @Ammar here is a fellow Syrian. He has good experience with security, algorithm complexity, and he's also a math freak. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of good answers around Sec.SE by him.
that's a lot man!
17:58
@Gilles Awwwwh!
I hate when people write "it's basic security" like here: security.stackexchange.com/questions/40620/…
SPAM on the front page
Yep, got it.
@Gilles I don't see it
Cache cache cache
18:02
Well, that's some network-wide spamming
nah, only three sites, that's small fry
I've seen them in the double digits
@Gilles Try 5
IS THAT HIM?!!
???
Oh, that's the Tor guy.
I thought he was the spammer
can somebody recommend a password manager for windows?
18:07
@CodesInChaos KeePass
Been using it for a while now. I'm quite happy with it
Especially that I use it with Dropbox, oh.. heaven!
I like that you can have categories and sub categories (can separate work stuff from personal stuff)
and the best part is that you can store attachments in your entries
I have an entry called 'Passport' and I've attached a scan of my passport to it.
Adnan, go formulate a decent answer in the Tor thread please.
@Simon I'm writing it
It's getting out of hand.
Good, I will instant +1 it.
not exactly wrong, but using a homebrew KDF is a bit silly
@Simon I'm just downloading the latest Tor bundle to verify my information
@CodesInChaos Oh, and the best feature is the name.
It can be KeepAss
18:12
oh well, can't be worse than notepad
and it's not like I'll upload by password file to dropbox
@Simon I've written half of the answer. I'm getting bored!
@Adnan Hurrrrrrrrrrrrry
@Simon I don't think I want to finish it
Oh lawd.
@Simon Okay okay, I will
18:23
You're so slow that I got a +1 meanwhile!
@Simon You posted an answer?
@Adnan No, it's still the password one.
The bear got +43 so far -.-
@Simon Done
+1
@Simon I smelled it
Look at that... looook at that!
Bolded up and full of links
18:32
I finished reading it, it explains the situation far more better than the other 2.
With short answers and stuff
YEAH!
@Simon Ooooh, look at me! Protecting questions and stuff

Q: Is it safe to show users why their password is not allowed?

Rixhers AjaziI'm currently working on a new project, and an issue struck me. Is it it safe to disclose your password requirements? If so, why is it safe? I have a function that does validation on a password and each step shows the user why validation does not work. Here is my function: public function ...

@Adnan Wowow!
18:46
@Simon What? Who dares not using Slovenian here?
@TildalWave A Canadian, obviously.
@Simon OK, you're forgiven then. I have some family there... preferential treatment FTW!
anyway, "good morning" ;)
@TildalWave Oh nice. Morning!
@Simon And they have millions of cats. OK, I exaggerate. A bit.
Sounds awesome!
18:51
5 hours ago, by Thomas Pornin
@TerryChia You cannot do serious sysadmin tasks without a cat. Just like World domination.
Ha!
So what else is new here? Any more problems with trolls and spammers?
We had 2 live stream spam earlier.
@Simon That football / soccer thingy? I edited out one, didn't see the other
They were taken down.
Fascist control open portal trollmods FTW!
@Adnan Now I wonder if color blind people are happier
18:59
@TildalWave I don't believe they are.
Hmmm.. now that I think about it, I see that those are two shades of the same color. I'm not aware of any color blindness that would prevent a person from seeing the difference between the two.
@Adnan it was a joke :P
@Adnan blindness?
@TildalWave My refactored code broke the release. I'm finding it quite difficult to understand jokes.
Except my code of course, that's a good joke.
@Adnan yes, but is it funny?
@TildalWave I'm not sure, but I think it is. Anybody who has checked the SVN log is laughing, so it must be.
good jokes have to be funny?
19:05
@AmmarM.Zerouk What's the purpose of a joke?
Or rather, telling a joke.
Only 118 rep until I reached my goal, that's crazy.
COL + LOL > LOL > COL Ain't this to cry/laugh out loud funny?
@Simon You promised champaign.
@Adnan that's a really hard question, answering it is like answering the purpose of life! which I don't know yet.
@Adnan I said I'd throw a party at my place so Champagne is intended.
19:09
@Simon I'm not sure about that. Are you gonna play your music?
@Adnan I rarely obligate people to listen to my music.
@Ammar Do you know any good melodic metal bands that sing in Arabic?
@Simon Alright, so you just force them to hear about your female hardcore DJ obsessions.
@Adnan HARDSTYLE.
So, for today's "Question I probably know the answer to, but am going to ask anyway since I don't like the answer I know..."

Is there any way to get Wireshark to target a specific local application/process, like you can do with Fiddler?
@Iszi Nope
19:23
@Iszi I don't think so, I don't see any way to filter by process in the pcap docs
and afaik the way network packets are handled in the kernel would make that difficult
assuming you're talking about Linux, I don't know about other OSes
If you're targeting a specific process, you can get the raw traffic with strace
So, what makes Fiddler so special in this regard?
@Gilles Windows, sorry.
@Iszi With Windows you can do it with NetMon
@Iszi Fiddler works at a much higher level in the stack.
@Adnan Latest release was in 2010? Not sure I fancy that.
but you can configure wireshark to filter on a specific exit port, if you know which port the process is using.
Ah, I see what's happening. NetMon will be replaced with Message Analyzer, currently in beta.
19:42
Hmm, I was just told that I don't have enough experience. That hasn't happened to me in a long time.
In fact I was almost rejected from one place for having too much experience.
It's... an interesting feeling.
Ah, rejection.... now I know what @Adnan's life is like ;-)
@AviD Not yet
@Iszi So? Have you tried it?
@Adnan The minute I went to download it, power died at work.
20:03
why is everyone on-topic here?
@TildalWave Well, here you go (probably NSFW)
I DID IT I WIN!!!! FUCK YOU TOSHIBA ! YOU TOLD ME I CAN'T I SAID FUCK YOU AND DID IT. @DavidFreitag I would like to thank you for your help and support that was so greatly needed through this livng hell.
Oh, speak of the devil ... here's @Griffin :))
@TildalWave You rang?
@Griffin yes m'lord ... I was complaining everyone is on-topic... then you came, so all is fine :)
20:06
@TildalWave .... On topic shouldn't even be allowed in this chat.
indeed
so here's a question - how can you find out which user deleted an account on a site you have access to mod tools?
Does your website have action logs?
short of actually missing the bugger? :))
@Griffin SE site
@TildalWave I have no clue but someone needs to give me review permissions because I deserve them
@Griffin we all fear your comments :)
20:13
Windows 8 is 3.6 gb and Visual studio is like 2gb .... dayum you big
@TildalWave :( Not like I can do much with review first post.
@TildalWave Why do you fear my comments?
@Griffin you might be right
When I'm genuinely not getting something I can seem like a total dick >.>
@TildalWave Lol not in this field. Like I sit here and I'm just like "Oh that's cool. I have no clue what you're talking about let me google it. Oh wait let me take a 2 week adventure trying to understand all the stuff that allows me to understand this"
@Griffin you have to earn the privilege first :P
@TildalWave I know. But I've earned it in other ways.
Like being cool
@Griffin No problem. I was almost going to mail you a flash drive with a self-activating windows 8 iso on it, lol.
20:17
@Griffin most of the reviewing is not about who's right and who's wrong, or if it's possible e.t.c. ... that's for the vote and flagging system, most of it is pure moderation, ie. suitability, language,...
So i just got my first taste of the windows group policy editor. God the server utilities are so fucking un-intuitive it's ridiculous.
@Griffin Ain't nothin' micro about their soft.
5
@DavidFreitag <3 This is why I love you David. But you should of seen it. It took me over 2 days to find one iso
@DavidFreitag That's what she said.
So bad that's what she said
@Griffin Er, uh. Ehem. I have an FTP you could have snagged an ISO from in like... ten minutes...
@DavidFreitag Ain't nothing micro or soft about mine.
YEAH.. that's what I said :(
@Adnan That's not what she said.
I think microsoft makes their server administration utilities so convoluted on purpose, that way and attacker really needs to know how to screw someone over.
Whoever came up with the "Action Panel" should be shot. Its uselessness is astounding.
20:43
Why won't GCC support 16 bit by default. Don't they know that backward compatibility is king!
@DavidFreitag Indeed.
Some say, "Why would you want to write 16bit code when you could write 64bit?" I answer, "Because you can't get to long mode without being in real mode."
Only a true nerd will understand that ^^
@DavidFreitag because real programmers write their bootloader in assembly
@ton.yeung Whenever I see 'Pay as you want', I always pay the lowest amount possible. If it's possible to get away with not paying at all, sign me up for it.
@ton.yeung Yuuuup, hello almost free games!
@Gilles In this case, but i've already written my bootloader for my 8086 project. I don't want to write my whole OS in it.
20:53
@ton.yeung Yeah, I've purchased the one that had Uplink
@ton.yeung They did an origin bundle?
@DavidFreitag More seriously: 8086 and x86_32 are different architectures that happen to both be supported by some popular CPUs. If you're compiling for 8086, you need a (cross-)compiler that targets 8086, not a compiler that targets x86_32 or x86_64
@Gilles You can compile code for the 8086 using GCC, i've done it before. It just uses the 8/16bit simplified x86 instruction set.
@ton.yeung Well, apparently you have to pay at least $4.56
Still not bad
It's too bad i already have the games in the origin humble bundle though.
ohman.
Freaking hysterical
21:06
@ton.yeung no, but Intel and AMD CPUs that support both x86_32 and 8086 instruction sets are popular
21:52
@RoryAlsop You should add to meta.security.stackexchange.com/questions/1369/… so that it shows up in the community bulletin
at +12, there isn't massive support for the idea, I predict that SE will say “no, hardly anybody cares”
Mind you, even at +50, I predict they'll say “too late, and our designer is overworked anyway”
i r certified lolcoder.
22:13
@gilles - done.
we should encourage more physical security questions
last time when we did that contest there were only a handful
I don't know how to do that. No relevant content → no experts → no good answers → not attractive to experts → not attractive to askers → complete the circle
so my current lobbying projects are: get sec.se to officially endorse physical security
get travel.se to officially endorse expat questions (actually, I'm not sure about this one, I just want it to be discussed instead of assumed)
a really ambitious project would be to get SU to accept all computer questions
22:49
↑ this is approved by me
@RoryAlsop the last one? or all of them?
I stopped caring about SU long ago
except when I have a Windows question, and even that is like pulling teeth
Q: “I want to do X. I tried method M but it didn't work.” A: “Try method M.” C: “I already tried that, I mentioned it in my question.” C: “Y U downvote?”
I did get real help on SU twice though: twice the maintainer of the software I was asking about saw my question and made a feature/bugfix in response
Wow. I just ran 24 un-installs, 15 installs, and 6 program updates without once being prompted for a reboot.
And here is where my luck will run out: Antivirus, Firewall, and OS updates.
@Iszi In the world of Windows? Impossibru!
@ton.yeung sigh I've read the description. I said $4.56 not $4.57, that's the minimum to get Battlefield and Sims.
23:05
@Simon Indeed. In fact, there were a few apps I was sure would require reboots (like Wireshark w/ WinPcap, or Daemon Tools) but didn't.
@Iszi Mark this day to your calendar, it won't happen again.
Hey, even got lucky with the firewall - already up-to-date!
@ton.yeung Are they slowly raising the prices?
@ton.yeung I'm not talking about the average, I'm talking about the minimum to get Sims and Battlefield
AV already up to date too? Who's been a good computer? Yeah, that's right, yoou've beean a goood compyoootor!!!
But of course yesterday was Patch Tuesday. Windows Updates, ho!
Windows drives everyone insane.
23:14
@ton.yeung Ahaaaa.. thanks a lot for explaining.
23:27
@Adnan I was not stalking and I have no idea what does the word u said mean
