@Pandya I'm not sure if there's a need to close it as opinion-based. The question isn't asking whether Ramanunacharya was right or wrong to refuse the Chola king's order, it's just asking why he refused.

@Pandya Yes, the Chola king plucked out the eyes of Ramanujacharya's guru Periya Nambi (Mahapurna in Sanskrit) and Ramanujacharya's shishya Kurathalwan. Meanwhile Ramanujacharya and the rest of the Sri Vaishnavas left Sri Rangam (the headquarters of the Sri Vaishnava sect) and escaped to Melkote in Karnataka. They only came back to Sri Rangam after the Chola king died.

@Pandya By the way, there's actually some ambiguity about which Chola king this was.

@KeshavSrinivasan How about giving reason for Ramanujacharya's refusing to hail Shiva? that : the situation was that king is forcing everyone to worship Shiva only and there is only Ramanujacharya left/remained who worship Vishnu. So, if Ramanujacharya forced to worship Shiva then no one support the Vishnu or Vaishnavism. Thus in ordered to save Vaishnava (devotee of Vishnu) or Vaishnavism, Ramanujacharya may refused to hail Shiva.

There are some questions with the tag anti-hinduism I find creation and usage of such tags disturbing. If we allow such tags, I can imagine users in the future creating other tags like "pro-islam", "pro-single-religion" etc. and we'll start losing focus on Q & A and enter into a game of asking ...
