Q: Who is Mankila, Pravara Rishi of the Vaishyas?

Keshav SrinivasanAs I discuss in this question, every Brahmana is a descendant of sages, which is why every Gotra or clan of Brahmins has an associated list of Pravaras, a list of the sages they're descended from. For instance, I am a Brahmin belonging to Vadhula Gotra, and my Pravaras are "Bhargava, Vaitahavya, ...

RickrossI posted an answer to this question but it was deleted by one moderator citing that "this does not answer the question". This does not answer the specific question about Ramanujacharya's reasons, so I'm deleting your answer for the time being. If you want to edit your answer so that it an...

@KeshavSrinivasan handling meta.hinduism.stackexchange.com/q/673/277
@KeshavSrinivasan @AnkitSharma Can/Should we close this as primarily opinion based?

@Pandya I'm not sure if there's a need to close it as opinion-based. The question isn't asking whether Ramanunacharya was right or wrong to refuse the Chola king's order, it's just asking why he refused.

@KeshavSrinivasan Hmm... ok

@Pandya On the other hand, the question of whether Vishnu and Shiva are the same is opinion-based and something that different sects of Hinduism disagree about, so perhaps it should be closed as opinion-based until the OP takes out that part of the question.

@Pandya i think we can present Ramanucharya's view and Advaitic view and say OP to select the one which suits his temperament.

Here the title is having one Q & the body is having more different Qs..and i actually answered only those in the body without answering the one in the title..and as u can see the questioner accepted my answer and also posted that he considered my answer as "great"..so in this case the main Qs were there in the body and not in title..so u never know ..let the user who is asking himself decide that.. — Rickross 49 mins ago
@Rickross ^^ No.
This is community.
Question doesn't affect the questioner and answerer only but it affects the whole community.

3:28 PM
@Pandya Give link of this chat room under comments to rickross.

@Rickross Questioner can accept any answer as s/he wish but it is not always necessary that answer is right! (there may be case)
@Rickross So, the decision should be taken considering the community not the Questioner :P
@KeshavSrinivasan ^^ Am I on right way? Btw, can you moderator ping (to invite) to @Rickross at here as I think it is better to discuss here rather then following comments so on...

@Rickross ping
@Pandya Yeah, I agree with your comments.

3:54 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan I think Rickross is serious/angry as his answer is deleted. (Though consider revisions). Sorry I couldn't draw attention to @Rickross by means of chat-messages otherwise I hope this may not happened.
I think In addition to moderating posts, moderation also relates/deals and teaching users the appropriate/right way... /cc @AnkitSharma

Btw, I found the following story from quora.com/… :
>Ramanujacharya was very famous by now among the Vedanta community. He had defeated many Shaivites and Smartas from all around India. At this point of time Kolathunga Chola became the king of Chola dynasty and turned into hardcore Shaiva. We have examples of Kings such as Prahalada Maharaja from Vishnu Purana who was a pure Vaishnava at heart, but yet let his subjects choose to worship the deities they wanted to. Even, the ancestors of Kolathunga Chola who were devout Vaishnavas because of likes of Yamunacharya allowed freedom to people to choose their own deity of Worship. However, Kolathu
good-bye!

@Pandya Yes, the Chola king plucked out the eyes of Ramanujacharya's guru Periya Nambi (Mahapurna in Sanskrit) and Ramanujacharya's shishya Kurathalwan. Meanwhile Ramanujacharya and the rest of the Sri Vaishnavas left Sri Rangam (the headquarters of the Sri Vaishnava sect) and escaped to Melkote in Karnataka. They only came back to Sri Rangam after the Chola king died.
@Pandya By the way, there's actually some ambiguity about which Chola king this was.

4:57 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan How about giving reason for Ramanujacharya's refusing to hail Shiva? that : the situation was that king is forcing everyone to worship Shiva only and there is only Ramanujacharya left/remained who worship Vishnu. So, if Ramanujacharya forced to worship Shiva then no one support the Vishnu or Vaishnavism. Thus in ordered to save Vaishnava (devotee of Vishnu) or Vaishnavism, Ramanujacharya may refused to hail Shiva.
(I'm planning to take it positively)

@KeshavSrinivasan The title of the question is clearly talking about Bhagavad Gita and that's the heart of the question. Similar to the answer that Rickross answered that got deleted. I think mods should read the heart of the question. Isn't it? Most questions are very confusing such as this: hinduism.stackexchange.com/q/16094/2995

@sv. Well, the thing is that people are basically interpreting the question as "Wendy Doniger said the Bhagavad Gita is bad. What is your response?" And then people are basically saying "My response is that Wendy Doniger doesn't know what she's talking about."
@sv. So it's a poorly phrased question.

sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan Clearly, this answer sounds like a rant than an answer: hinduism.stackexchange.com/a/14073/2995

@sv. Yeah, I agree it's a rant. Like I said, I think that's the fault of the vagueness of the question.

sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/9196/… -- also leads to opinion-based answers which is fine. but we should limit the answers to citing scriptures not personal opinions.
@KeshavSrinivasan Not really, OP wants to defame the author, promote RM's view etc. not really sure
@KeshavSrinivasan I in fact had the question re-opened citing "K.S. Bhagavan's critique of Adi Shankara"
@KeshavSrinivasan Why is this question closed as opinion-based? It's a valid question. This is similar to this question: K.S. Bhagavan's critique of Adi Shankara and should be re-opened so it can be properly answered. – sv. Jul 15 at 13:18 helpful

@sv. Well, that question was mainly asking what K.S. Bhagavan's critique of Adi Shankaracharya was. I agree that the "well-founded" part invites opinion-based answers, and so that part may need to be taken out.

sv.
8:53 PM
Will you allow an answer to that question calling K.S. Bhagavan, "he's an idiot", "has poor understanding of scriptures according to this news article", "he doesn't know what he's talking about" ?
@KeshavSrinivasan What about: Is Krishna justified in supporting Pandavas?

@sv. Although "well-founded" can be interpreted two ways: whether Adi Shankaracharya really did support the caste system, or whether Adi Shankaracharya ought to have supported the caste system.
@sv. Well, the difference is that Amit's question is much vaguer, and so it invites answers that discuss whether Wendy Doniger is qualified to discuss the Bhagavad Gita or not.

sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan Then are some questions, is Krishna good or bad?

@sv. I think questions asking whether Krishna's actions are justified are absolutely fine.
@sv. And so similarly if Amit rephrased his question so it was specifically about whether Krishna gave murderous and self-destructive advice, that would be fine.

sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan Like I said, heart of the question is: What is the response to this according to Hinduism? Is there any truth in this kind of perspective?
@KeshavSrinivasan So IYO, in current form of that question, I can answer by pointing to an news article that calls her a complete idiot and her comments and work should be ignored. And that answer will not be taken down?
@KeshavSrinivasan ...without actually responding to her comments on BG or Krishna?

@sv. Yeah, the "what is the response to this according to Hinduism" part can easily interpreted as an invitation to give any sort of response at all. That's why I closed the question.
@sv. The question is in need of rephrasing so that only answers dealing with Krishna and the Bhagavad Gita will be relevant.

sv.
9:04 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan I believe, whether OP edits his question or not, high-rep users and mods should see through the fog and find the real purpose of the question. Only let users answer that part.
@KeshavSrinivasan The title is very clear about that. Similar to the question Rickross answered.

@sv. Well, if there is a fog that's preventing users from understanding the real purpose of the question, that's a reason to close the question first and foremost.
@sv. The fact that every single one of the answers is not addressing the real purpose of the question is a clear indication that the real purpose is not clear enough.
@sv. Taking Wendy Doniger out of the title may help.

sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan K.S. Bhagavan's critique of Adi Shankara -- has two names in the title!!

@sv. Yeah, but that's a different type of question. That's about trying to find out what K.S. Bhagavan's criticism was, so K.S. Bhagavan was front and center there. Wendy Doniger should not be front and center here. Krishna and the Bhagavad Gita should be front and center here.

sv.
@KeshavSrinivasan What about this: hinduism.stackexchange.com/q/12128/2995

@sv. Yeah, "Are Yoginis wild erotic creatures?" may be a better title in that case.

sv.
9:14 PM
@KeshavSrinivasan I don't know if OP is a fan of RM or what. Surely has multiple reasons for posting such questions - what do you think?
@KeshavSrinivasan In the BG question he links to other saying: "PS. I ask a question about the viewpoint of her student Devdutt Pattnaik [here][3]."
"
@KeshavSrinivasan I'm not sure if we should allow a tag called anti-hinduism ...
@KeshavSrinivasan now someone will create a pro-islam tag :)

Q: What exactly is a "wrong answer?" What is the official policy on handling wrong answers?

sv.Sometime ago I flagged to delete this answer to the question Wendy Doniger and the Bhagavad Gita. Here's my reason for flagging: Your answer sounds like an exposé of Ms. Doniger. You need to read the question again. It's about Doniger's comments on BG and how do you respond to her accusation...

Q: Should we allow a tag called "anti-hinduism"?

sv.There are some questions with the tag anti-hinduism I find creation and usage of such tags disturbing. If we allow such tags, I can imagine users in the future creating other tags like "pro-islam", "pro-single-religion" etc. and we'll start losing focus on Q & A and enter into a game of asking ...

@sv. Haha yeah, lots of people have strong feelings towards Wendy Doniger, ever since she wrote the book "Siva the Erotic Ascetic."

@sv. By the way, ironically I invited both Devdutt Pattanaik and Rajiv Malhotra to the site a while back. Both expressed a willingness to do it.

@KeshavSrinivasan Ha Ha! I suspect some of their fans will quit their day jobs and participate on our forum full time. Excellent! :P
@KeshavSrinivasan I invited a Swami to participate. He said can answer verbally but cannot type answers.

11:54 PM
@sv. Haha yeah, by the way Rajiv Malhotra even tweeted about my invitation.
@sv. Oh, you spoke to a Swami in person and asked him?
@sv. I recently spoke to a Sri Vaishnava lecturer who said he doesn't have time to directly participate, but whenever I have interesting and challenging questions I can email him about them.
@sv. By the way, I often use Twitter to promote the site. Like I'll search for some advanced Hinduism topic on Twitter, like Pancharatra or Brahma Sutras, and then I invite users who are mentioning such topics to the site.
