7:17 PM
haha
I actually believe that among the multitudes of conspiracy theories we see, a couple might actually be true.

some can really be true, but some are so outlandish that I ask myself if the proponents are too stupid or are trolls
or both

I'll go with stupid

on my company people had long running pranks on interns, so maybe they are running those life-long pranks too to see how long they can stretch it

hmm... that's possible too

there was even a website they created to confuse the interns on some undocumented errors that they wrote themselves

7:24 PM
lol :D

imagine being an intern on a fortune-500 company, you start a task, get an strange error, there's nothing on the manuals, and someone sends you a website... you get there, and it says the program rewrote some crucial data from 10 years ago and failed to detect that the data was ancient
and the guys who work with you look at you with terror on their faces, lock their computers, unplug their phones and ran out of the door

I wish.
You can hold beliefs, and not let them affect your work

the only one who is left gives you a mainframe tape, asks you to put on the drive to recover, and it's the only copy left... but they unwinded the tape, rewinded 2m of them on the wrong side, so when you put on the drive, it starts reading and 100m of tape explodes out of the drive...
people did that one day, a few years before I got on the company...

in Portuguese, "charge" and "carry" is the same word: "carregar"
so if you say you will charge a battery or carry a battery, it's the same "carregar a bateria"

7:30 PM
@ThoriumBR That actually means in your company there's a conspiracy for real, OMG, lol

people had a lead-acid battery on the 20th floor that needed to be charged/carried, and they would ask an intern to do so. but when the intern was carrying the battery to the elevator, someone was there to say that the battery is dangerous and you cannot carry a box of acid and heavy metal on a locked metal box, so the poor guy had to take the stairs... 20 floors down
when the poor guy got down on the docks to charge the battery, the guy there asked for the charging form (that wasn't a thing, he was part of the prank) and the poor guy had to get back on the 20th to get the form. but the dock guy wouldn't let him keep the battery on the docks because he would not be responsible if something happened to the battery, and the intern carries the battery back 20 floors upstairs
back on the 20th, he gets the form because the guy who told him about the battery says he got after the intern with the form but he has already disappeared, and hands him the (wrong) form...
a round trip later, he gets the correct form, and gets down to the docks for the THIRD time only to discover that the guy who is the only who could charge the battery had to do some maintenance on another site and will be back on the next day
I escaped from those pranks because I was in an unique situation: I was hired by my company to work inside an university, so while I was at the university I was "the company guy" so they wouldn't mess up too much with me, and vice versa

This entire notion that every conspiracy is just totally crazy is one of the most retarded ones that the common populous believes.

but I heard the stories

Anonymous
And calling any theory you disagree with a conspiracy is just as harmful.

Anonymous
I really do not like it.

7:40 PM
@J--, can you make an example of a conspiracy theory that is not crazy?

the planned obsolescence is one
iphones getting slower close to the release of the new ones

Anonymous
@reed Well, firstly, crazy is subjective.

Anonymous
But for example, I think the whole "9/11 conspiracy theorists" are crazy is just a harmful belief. There's lots of reasons a government might choose to do such an act, now, was 9/11 done by the government? I don't know. The main point is that when you pigeon hole theories like this, any future ones that can be seen as related in some way, instantly have a negative reputation when they still have the possibility of being legitimate theories.

Anonymous
It's just dangerous.

Anonymous
It just creates a culture where people who go "against the grain" are just "crazy" simply because you disagree with them, it's not fair and not a good way of viewing others beliefs.

7:48 PM
Or maybe I am just wrong and we should just call everyone crazy who disagrees with us simply because its easier to make fun of them than it is to consider that things in life can be not what they seem.

what I believe is that from 15-20 years ago to now, it's easier to find online people who think the same as you, even if from the 7+ billion people on Earth, only 20 or so think the same
so you end up finding "a lot of people" who believe the same as you even if they are only 20, and it seems that lots and lots of people agree with you
and before if you told people that the earth was flat, they would make fun of you until you gave up and nobody would back you up... not today

@ThoriumBR do people not believe that?

@J-- but the problem is that very often people who go "against the grain" tend to express themselves in crazy ways, or at least that's my impression

@J-- but the evidence, strongly suggests....

even if the flat earthers have 10.000 people around the globe, they can spread their believe around and look to them that there's an army of them, even if there aren't an army

7:52 PM
Heaven is the biggest con :D

@djsmiley2kStaysInside some don't think Apple would force you to buy a new phone just because they released a new one... and some don't even think about the choice of not buying a new phone when their current phone is 9 months old

Anonymous
@reed Or maybe because their views are so far different from yours they seem crazy when they are in-fact based in some reality that, that person has?

Anonymous
I just think its harmful to call everyone crazy

Anonymous
but if you wanna view the world in 1D

@ThoriumBR oih lol yeah iguess

Anonymous
7:54 PM
go for it...

Anonymous
i just think its weird.

Anonymous
to never consider any other viewpoint

Anonymous
is how you become a literal societal robot

Oh I concider many

Anonymous
who doers anything theyre told by anyone because they said it

7:54 PM
and disregard those which don't fit my logic
of how things work.

Anonymous
and that is just weird.

Anonymous
right but there sa difference

Anonymous
between that and calling them crazy?

my current phone for example is an Oneplus 3T and I will keep it around for a while

Anonymous
its like calling someone a nazi

7:54 PM
yes?

Anonymous
for wanting strong borders.

Crazy is when they won't listen to proven logic
but....

Anonymous
its just harmful

unfortunately
people be crazy yo
I'm crazy, I play the lottery.
:|

Anonymous
Okay, welp.

Anonymous
7:56 PM
I don't know what else to say. I think my point is pretty clear.

But.... I don't think I can effect me in winning in anyway.

Anonymous
As I said, it is like when you call someone a nazi for wanting strong borders. That is harmful discourse.

Anonymous
I think a 5 year old can understand that.

because Nazi, has particular meanings behind it, beyond 'just wanting strong borders'.
but by your logic, it's ok?

Anonymous
now you're purposefully misunderstanding me

Anonymous
7:57 PM
wtf are you talking about

no, i'm trying to understand you
oh wait, you're saying it's not ok

Anonymous
Okay. I think it is pretty simple.

Anonymous
The left like to call people nazis because they disagree, right?

Anonymous
Not all left, but people on the left do that, a lot.

Anonymous
7:58 PM
People on the right call all lefties communists.

Anonymous
My point is that calling every one with a different theory to you crazy is no different than doing exactly that.

yes but I don't think this has much to do with conspiracy theories

Anonymous
And thats harmful

Anonymous
yes it does.

7:59 PM
That's just people being assholes

Anonymous
Shutting down EVERYONE as crazy

Anonymous
is not a good way to look at the world

everyone ? sure
but....

Anonymous
Okay, clearly I'm a fucking retard because I don't know how to explain this anymore so I'm just going to give up.

Anonymous
It's pretty clear in my head but apparently not to anyone else so, whatever.

8:02 PM
not everything HAVE TO BE a conspiracy... maybe I am wrong on something and you're wrong on something else

me too, it's pretty clear in my head but I don't know how to explain it, lol. I mean, the difference between a conspiracy theory/theorist, and the rest of crazy stuff that might or might not be actually crazy

it does not mean me or you are a conspiracy theorist

quantum realms and mutiple universes? possible
time travelers from 2030 warning us the earth is gonna end? lol no

what I mean by "conspiracy theory" is usually something that would involve a lot of people, a lot of resources, a lot of everything, in a way that in my opinion becomes impossible to believe
small-scale conspiracies on the other hand can actually work, and probably happen all the time

moon landing conspiracys? lol
I don't see anyone here going 'all conspiracies are wrong'
yet you seem to be suggesting people do @J--

8:06 PM
...................................................................................

Anonymous
Yeah, we'll go with that.

Anonymous
Later!

what do you guys think UFOs actually are? I have no idea. I've always thought they are some kind of new (military) technology, tested out by some governments. However some incidents are just weird

most are.... just crap

and by the way, I don't think UFOs fall under the conspiracy theory category, nor do time travelers (although I don't believe in time travelers)

8:10 PM
deluisions, testing by miltary, weird weather effects, etc
not aliens visiting

but time travel is possible! when you sleep, you travel to the future!

Listen to my theory: UFOs might be Jesus Christ who is trying to come back, but then he changes his mind and is like "let's wait another few years before destroying the earth". How's my theory?

Sounds legit
cannot deny

8:51 PM
@djsmiley2kStaysInside Actually NASA hired Stanley Kubrick to fake the moon landing, but he insisted on filming on location
I know it's an old joke, but it's still funny

true story!
it's because CGI on that time was so crappy that they had to fly there to get credible shots

9:40 PM
@J-- The government didn't do 9/11, but they sure did benefit from it.
They used it as an excuse. They had no need to carry it out themselves.

1 hour later…
10:49 PM
@reed Weather balloons and wishful thinking.

11:08 PM
You know, I'd love to see a paper that provides a nearly exhaustive list of potential techniques that for detecting microarchitectural side-channels with perf counters.
